• Recall R/2018/081 [UK]: Brake lamp switch may malfunction
  The brake lamp switch may malfunction which can be identified by a malfunction indicator lamp (mil) illumination an audible chime and the brake lights will be illuminated. A malfunctioning brake switch could allow the vehicle to be shifted out of park without the brake pedal being depressed and could cause the rear brake lamps to be continuously illuminated. Being able to shift a vehicle out of park when the brake pedal is not depressed (and the ignition is in the run mode) and/or having the rear brake lamps continuously illuminated could cause a vehicle to crash without prior warning.

  Certain vehicles may have a malfunctioning brake switch. This could allow the shifter lever to be shifted out of the park (p) position while the ignition is in the run mode without depressing the brake pedal, resulting in unintended vehicle movement. As a result, the rear lights could also remain illuminated, causing the following road users to be unaware of the driver’s intention.   On certain vehicles, the fuel tank control valve may have been improperly manufactured. An inoperative fuel tank control valve may result in debris in the fuel tank, the ability to overfill the fuel tank during refuelling and/or a fuel leak during a vehicle rollover event. A fuel leak during a vehicle rollover event, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will inspect the fuel tank control valve. Vehicles found with an improperly manufactured fuel tank control valve will have the fuel tank assembly and fuel pump module replaced.

• Recall 2016498 [Canada]: Airbag
  On certain vehicles, the headlamps could rotate during a crash, which could cause the wiring to the front impact sensor to detach prior to a signal being recorded by the occupant restraint controller (orc). This could result in non-deployment of airbags and pretensioners during a crash where deployment is warranted, which could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Correction: dealers will modify the front impact sensor wiring harness and re-route and secure it.

• Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation # EA21002

  From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). • Seat belt buckle bracket failure investigation # PE19008

  On july 17, 2019, nhtsas office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation (pe) 19-008 after receiving three vehicle owner questionnaire (voq) reports alleging the drivers side seat belt buckle separated from the seat frame, rendering the seat belt non-functional. The voqs involved model year (my) 2015 and 2016 jeep wrangler (jk platform) that were configured for right-hand drive (rhd) use. On august 8, 2019, odi issued an information request (ir) letter to fca.The scope of the ir included all jk wrangler produced for sale in the u.S. (both left- and right-hand drive), and amongst other things, requested any reports or allegations of drivers seat belt bracket failures on these vehicles. In its review of fcas response, odi determined that approximately 1.7 million jk wrangler were produced from my 2007 to 2018, about 16,000 of which were configured for rhd. Odi notes that the rhd wrangler are typically used for rural postal delivery which often experience a more severe duty cycle. Also rhd jk was was not produced in my 2007.As explained in the ir response, fca identified three distinct populations of jk wrangler concerning the drivers seat belt bucket bracket; specifically the my 2007-2018 lhd (~1.7m units), the my 2008-2010 rhd (4,563 units), and the my 2011-2018 rhd (11,463 units) populations.Fca provided details on the designs used in each of these populations, identifying specific differences deemed pertinent to the strength and durability of each unique bracket design. Fca further reviewed its analysis of the complaint and warranty data identified under the ir, and noting that it had not identified any allegations of bracket failures on the lhd population, and only one allegation on the my 2008-2010 rhd vehicles. By comparison, fca identified 24 allegations of bracket failure for the my 2011-2018 rhd jk, including two reports duplicative of the voqs. Neither the fca nor the voq reports allege an injury or fatality due to bracket failure. Based on this analysis, fca decided to conduct a safety recall for the my 2011-2018 rhd jk population. On september 30, 2019, fca submitted a defect information report initiating nhtsa safety recall 19v-680 (fca no. Va6). Under the recall action, fca will replace the drivers seat belt bracket on my 2011-2018 rhd jeep jk wrangler. The repair will be conducted free of charge.In view of fcas recall action, and its explanations of the scope of that action, odi is closing pe19-008. Odi will continue to monitor the non-recalled rhd, and the lhd jk wrangler for evidence of seat belt bracket failure and will take further action if warranted.The three voq reports cited above can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under the following reference numbers:11190251, 11218472, 11231639.

• Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation # EA19001

  The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit.The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems.The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low.While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events.Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring.The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations.In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.Additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.

Both front doors seals are leaking after four years old. Repair cost is $500+ - had a 2007 4 door for ten years; no leaks. They did a redesign - not a good design!

Steering wheel controls started working intermittently than quit. Vehicle is rhd and used on a rural mail route. Why weren't all rhd jku vehicles included in nhtsa recall 16v-288 when this is a documented recall for 2007 to 2016 rhd jeep jkus? This problem occurred around june 16 2021. Went to dealer and asked about problem and was told my extended warranty does not cover this.

2017 jeep wrangler sport jku all stock, normal road tires from the dealership, rear and front driver side break caliper is sticking and causing break drag at 32,000. Due to this causing the rear break pads to prematurely wear bi-lateral and damaging the rotor on the affected side, causing the vehicle to operate at higher rpms as the breaks are dragging. Due to the heat the caliper boot was damaged as well. Excessive dust on rim and burning break smell with excessive friction heat along with the vehicle pulls to affected side when you let go of the wheel at residential speeds. The heat causes a dangerous break lag and the break pedal is harder to depress as what i believe is fluid not making it back to the master cylinder. When the vehicle is in drive you let your foot off the break on level ground the vehicle dose not move as it should when the transmission is in drive at idle, no gas given, the breaks squeak and jump grip as the jeep tries to move when gas is given, the break is stuck on the rotor. Rear breaks where replaced bilaterally cleaned with new calipers, high temp silicone grease , rotors and ceramic pads is hopes to fix the problem. After that is when the front driver caliper was noticeably showing the same signs as the rear did. To have a non dealership mechanic do the job is 970.00.Vehicle drives as if the emergency break is on but was inspected and is not touching the inner drum. Vehicle is not heavily uses ether 1.)no lights or check break lights luminated its all feel. No accidents due to the break lag but is very dangerous if you need to stop suddenly. 2.)issue confirmed by a independent service center mechanic 3.) at 15,000 miles vehicle was taken back to the dealership for a break groaning sound and squeak when backing up or when driving, dealer stated it was just dust on the pads, inspection found no issues. After the visit the sound would still periodically kept reoccurring but was kept being told "dust" not sure if that was a early sign

Driver side front and rear brake calipers failed. 31765 miles on vehicle. Smelled something burning and rough ride. Took vehicle to jeep dealer. Told $2,100 to repair and caused by my only driving vehicle 31000 miles in 4 years. Told dealer i believed this was safety issue and i was filing nhtsa complaint. Fca provided replacement brake calipers for all 4 wheels and failed brake hose at no charge. Dealer repaired at $965 cost to me for damage caused by failed brake calipers.
