NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 115962 [USA]: A sudden reduction of braking performance may increase the risk of a crash.
Mitsubishi motors north america, inc. (mmna) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 eclipse vehicles manufactured april 20, 2005, to february 13, 2009, and 2007-2009 eclipse spyder vehicles manufactured december 23, 2005, to february 13, 2009. Due to corrosion inside the antil-lock brake system (abs) unit, one or more of the internal valves may seize. In a braking event that uses the abs, a seized valve would increase brake pedal travel and reduce braking ability.
mmna will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, flush and clean the abs hydraulic unit using high grade brake fluid, free of charge. If the inspection shows that the valves may seize, the abs unit will be replaced. The recall began on july 21, 2015. Owners may contact mmna customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mmna's number for this recall is sr-15-004.
owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 2015219 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, corrosion may occur in the abs hydraulic unit due to a reaction between the brake fluid and the surface treatment of the internal valves. If this were to occur and the abs hydraulic unit is activated, one or more of the valves could seize. This could result in longer brake pedal travel and increased stopping distances, which may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will flush and clean the hydraulic unit by replacing the brake fluid with higher grade (dot4) fluid. If module valve movement is determined to be poor, the abs hydraulic unit will be replaced.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

My daughter was driving the eclipse, she turned onto a side street and the car spun out of control causing her to hit a parked car. The passenger side tire is sideways, i have pictures of the car after the accident. My insurance company totaled the car. The police are saying she was at fault for the accident. There is a recall on the vin number.

My 2008 eclipse had an open recall on issues with abs for over a year. After a year i was finally notified that the parts were available to fix the issue. After much hassle dealing with the local deal i took my car in for repair. The service center claimed to have fixed the problem. However now my car is no leaking brake fluid from the abs. I contacted customer service and was told i need to take the car to a service center to be looked at. Normally no issue that the local dealership recently closed and the next closest one is over 100 miles away. As my car is leaking brake fluid it has been deemed unsafe to drive. I was told i would have to pay to have the car towed to a service center to be looked at but they would not guarantee that it would be fixed. As this is a known problem with abs system and an open recall this is totally unacceptable. Customer service told me it was not their concern on getting the car to be fixed and it did not matter that there were no service centers where i lived. I was also told that it was not their problem. As this product is manufactured by them and has their name i find this totally laughable. It is obvious that this company has no concerns for their customers and has no intention of fixing an know issue as it is an open recall.

I received a safety recall notice from mitsubishi motors in july of 2015. The notice is regarding a defect with the antilock breaking system hydraulic unit. The letter says i will be notified when the parts are available. I have called the local mitsubishi dealership and they say the parts are not reading i am still on a wait list. When operating the car sometimes the breaks go quite far down towards the floor. It has been too long to wait for these parts given there is a defect with the brakes.

My mitsubishi eclipse '08 during the year 2015, i have been having problems with my brakes when i drive over bumps quickly or hit a dip in the road. Each time this happens, my brakes practically lose all pressure. I had to pull over to the side of the road and pump my brakes a number of times to get the pressure back up. I have brought my vehicle three times to a private brake company and had my brake system inspected and brake pads replaced first and later had the brake system inspected in the latter visits. When i still continued to have this problem, i brought my vehicle to the dealership and was informed that there definitely has been a recall on the mitsubishi eclipses. They told me the problem with my brakes was because there was a fluid leak from the master cylinder into the brake booster. I paid out of my own pocket to have whatever needed fixed in my braking system fixed by them in october 2015. Approximately less than four months later, i was on the freeway (and of course people drive fast and there were cars all around me), i hit a dip in the road and my brakes almost went out. It scared me so bad! I had to pull over the side of the road and pump my brakes again to get the pressure back up. I have own other vehicles for years and never had this issue until i owned this particular type vehicle. So whatever they fixed did not work because i should not have experienced the same problem after the dealership 'supposedly' fixed it with new parts. I brought it back to the same dealership in february 2016 and they stated there was nothing wrong with my brake system and refused to do anything else about it. I drive this vehicle everyday so i know when something 'just doesn't feel right'. I could have been in a serious accident or died because i could not stop my vehicle and this needs to be taken seriously beforehand not after myself or some else dies.

I brought the vehicle used in 2008, after driving for a week or 2 i notice the tires were loosing air. I am constantly filling the tires with air every 2 to 3 days. I have taken this vehicle to the dealer and 2 other shops for a diagnosis and they said it was the tires, i replaced the tires and i still have this issue, so i know its more than the tires (its probably the wheel element damaged or something). The light tire lights turns on constantly and on several instances the car would shake heavily. Most of the shaking is experienced when driving on the highway. This issue is so bad, i barely ride the vehicle and when i do, i do not take it far due to the air pressure issue.

I received a safety recall notice in july of 2015. It is now five months later and they still haven't fixed the issue. My brake pedal sometimes doesn't work properly and makes a sucking sound when the pedal is released. I called mitsubishi and they said to bring it to a dealership for a road test and that my brakes would be flushed and checked. I made an appointment with the dealership 50 miles away and was turned away upon arriving because they can't fix the problem. My car is unsafe and mitsubishi will not fix it.

The brakes on my vehicle are not working as they should. Abs system was recalled by mitsubishi back in july, and they have yet to fix the problem. I have been very close to getting in to accidents due to the brakes not working properly, with my young son in the vehicle. When i spoke to mitsubishi they informed me that the remedy is not yet available. I was also told that if i got the brakes fixed myself, there is the possibility that i would not get reimbursed. I would like to get this fixed immediately before the brakes give out all together but due to a fault of the manufacturer, i am not willing to put out my hard earned money and not get it back. My car does not stop as it should while driving. The brake peddle does not function correctly. Please fix this issue or point me in the right direction.

For a month, i've noticed that my brake fluid level was decreasing rapidly and that i had to refill my brake fluid once a week. On 9/22/2015, suddenly my brake pedal had to go to the floor before i could start slowing down. I took my car to a mechanic on 9/24/2015. He said that my abs pump was leaking really bad and he cannot find/buy the part anywhere and that i had to take it to the dealership. I took it to a mitsubishi dealership that same day and told them what i was experiencing and what i was told. They kept the car that day and ran tests and confirmed with me in the morning of 9/25/2015 that it was the abs pump, which is part of a recent recall. The service manager at the dealership told me that he would be in contact with their corporate office about what to do next to get my vehicle fixed and to give me a rental car in the mean time (i couldn't get to work on 9/24 or 9/25 because i live an hour from work). In the evening of 9/25, the service manager called me back and told me that the corporate office is not willing to provide a rental car because the recall didn't say anything about the abs pump "leaking". The recall only mentions the valves within the pump "sticking", and because of that, cannot determine yet if my car is included in the recall and that additional tests need to be done, so they won't provide me with a rental car yet. He gave me the phone number to mitsubishi service center to try getting a rental car. I called in the morning of 9/28/2015 and the service center explained to me what i've already been told by the service manager at the dealership about the recall, but also that mitsubishi doesn't provide loaner vehicles due to a recall but it is up to the individual dealership. I explained to them that i've now missed 3 days of work because of a faulty part they put in my car and i'm losing money. I need help with this situation

Safety recall notice received on abs brakes, brake stroke has increased dramatically, breaks are squishy and need to be pumped, symptoms are as described on recall notice, pads are ok, no air in lines, fluid level ok. Called local dealer ......Mitsubishi(delete) and was told they were not authorized yet to make repairs on the recall . I could take it in and pay for the checks and repairs my self and submit bill for refund to mitsubishi. Not acceptable to me at this time,( expect several hundred dollars). Called mitsubishi customer relations department number listed on the recall notice (888-648-7820) was told the same thing that parts are not available but i could take it in, have local dealer make repairs, pay for it myself and send bill to them. Again not acceptable. Will wait until i get the second notice to take the car in for repair i guess.

Abs/braking issues. Two related issues. Issue number 1. There are 3 lights that are illuminating on the dashboard continuously under all circumstances (driving, parking, braking, idling, etc. - they never turn off) the lights are the traction control light, the abs light and the icon of a vehicle with skid marks. Issue number 2- additionally, the abs system turns on while braking and the abs braking system is jigging the brake making it difficult to brake safely. This happens with a forward brake, and with braking when going into a turn both left and right.

While driving as i went to brake, i felt the brakes had gone out. My foot went all the way to the floor, very very scary! At times it would not do this, it then became more often. I took in for repair and they repaired the master cylinder. Once i picked up the problem still existed. I did return to the repair shop and they stated they had to reset a switch, it seems okay now. My concern is since i received this abs recall, could this have been the issue? Just wanted to report this in case there is some sort of relation.

July ,2015 i received a recall on my abs hydraulic unit and before i got into warranty service. One evening i was able to stop my brakes made a gridding noise and pushed to floor. I went in in and the bleed brake and let me go. And it happen again and i went in to warranty dept.. They did the same tihing. They said they look for leaks and take picures and that it.

Sr15-004 received recall letter in july 2015. No additional followup or repair. Have contacted mitsubishi and they say part not available. How could hydraulic fluid not be available? Have had issues with brakes early 2015 for antilock at 5 mpg. All brake lights remained on for two dayswith concern for total braje failure.

As many others have described; anti-lock brakes engaged in light snowy conditions. Pedal firmness was lost. Initially brakes would grab when pedal pushed, then loss of brake pressure until pedal was pushed all the way down to floor (hissing sound). Some brake pressure could be restored by tapping brake as brakes were applied, but this application was not always consistent. Took car to national chain brake/tire shop. They looked at car and determined that calipers were hung up, so adjusted and lubricated calipers. This did not fix problem so brake lines were bled, still did not fix problem. Shop determined that they needed mitsubishi proprietary diagnostic equipment to repair (refunded money for failed repair). Recommended car be returned to dealer for repairs. Dealer had car for two weeks (waiting for parts) determined that master cylinder had internal seal failure brake fluid leaked into booster, destroying booster, also showed internal valve damage to brake module which required replacement. Repairs cost almost $2,000.00 for a car with 52,000 miles! Hydraulic system failed before brake pads needed to be replaced! Mitsubishi does not feel that this repair is unusual so has no relief program for costs. It seems that brakes that fail while driving would be something the government and the manufacturer should be concerned about. When will you force a recall on these items? Does someone have to die first? Hope i'm not the one. *tr

Dear representative serious anti lock hydraulic brake failure. When i had to brake the other day i had low brake pressure and brake pedal almost went to the floor when i had to come a stop. This is a serious safety item. I had my the car towed to the dealer. The service department determined the abs(antilock brake) system is failing. Abs part is not in stock and the part won't arrive in next few days. As i search on the web , other consumers with the same model car(eclipse 2006-2008) are experiencing the same issue. The government need to get involved before someone get killed. This is a manufacturer defect under mvss. There should be a recall!!! Another concern, i have another eclipse. 07 that can get the same issue . We need a recall so the consumer can be safe and will not have to pay ~$650. *dt

I hit some ice and the anti lock brakes made a sound and the brakes went to the floor and now the brakes are spongy. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I found a web site called club g forum and there were dozens of other eclipse owners all experiencing the same problem as me. This is definitely a major defect and needs to be recalled before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. *tr

I have been having problems with the braking system for the last 2 years. When i accelerate the brake light comes on. I checked fluid and everything. I drove it again and had to make not even a sudden stop and the pedal went to the floor board and almost did not stop.I have read all over that there are problems with the same thing on this same model car. Not sure why there is no recall on it yet. I have two small young children and am afraid i one day will not be able to stop. When you press on the brakes there is an air or whistle sound coming from them. The pads and rotors are good and the car is a 2008 with 88,000 miles on it. It has never been hard driven. Not sure what the issue is and if the power brake booster is $139 plus fright charge from out of state and that may or may not be the problem. *tr

Upon applying my brakes to slow down the pedal went to the floor and a hissing noise coming from the pedal area. Had done this before and then it was ok. Started doing it again and had the brakes changed. Was fine for a while then started again. Had ase mechanic inspect master cylinder, bleed brakes and brake booster. Still all the same. I know they recalled lancer for the same issues. And also 2005-2207- eclipse. They all have the same issue. Cannot allow my daughter to drive this car due to the problem. *tr

I noticed that as i press the brake peddle down and let off there is a whistle sound as the brake peddle is coming back up. This issue is continuing to get worse. The more that i drive the car, the less efficient my brakes are working to actually stop the car. Multiple mechanics have looked under the hood and said it could be either the master brake cylinder or the abs control which is very uncommon for a car with such low miles.???? *tr

NoNoN NoneNone20130901

As i was driving down a congested road, i tried to come to a stop and the peddle went all the way down to the floorboard. I tried pulling the emergency brake and that didn't work either. At that point i avoided a collision by going on the median and down shifted. The car, luckily, is a 5 speed. My husband replaced the brake pads a month or so before that, so he checked to be sure the lines were bled correctly. Which they were. This was the first instance. Today was the scariest. It was raining and i was going 45 in the middle lane. The car in front of me stopped suddenly and i tried, too. The front end kind of hopped up a few times as i tried to apply the brakes and e brake. Again, by the grace of god, i was far enough away that i didn't hit him. Being wary after the first incident, i stay far back from other cars. Every time this happens, i hear a whining sound when the peddle is pumped and until the peddle comes back all the way up. This year should be recalled, too. Tallahassee has no dealership, so my closet option is about an hour and a half away. *tr

The brakes got spongy one day after i braked hard, there was a whistle on release and then were far less efficient. Sometime i had to push the pedal to the floor to stop. The pedal started to engage then didn't seem to work at all until i was almost at the floor. I had the master cylinder replaced and breaks tested multiple times as well as brakes bled and nothing helped. I've had multiple mechanics change out parts and look at it but it still continues to require a lot of extra stopping time and distance. It's very hard to stop in time if you have to stop short. *tr

Driving into work at 35mph, light changed and pressed brakes to stop. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor and the car did not slow down. Release brake pedal and pressed again, tapping the brake pedal to slow the car to avoid going through intersection and hitting car in front. Car slowed eventually after 3 times releasing the brake and pressing it again. No accident occurred, but this type of incident has happened on multiple occasions since then, making me feel unsafe driving my own car. Now, summer of 2015, the brakes are not working properly and we have to push the the brake all the way to the floor to stop and the brakes are very insensitive where they used to respond to the slightest tap and stop. We took the car to the dealership for service and were quoted $2000 worth of repairs to replace the abs and grand master cylinder and rear brake pads. In july, we received a recall notice for exactly this type of incident, however the dealership was not equipped to handle the repair for some weeks and just now (august 7) we were notified that they have the parts available for the first level of repair - even though they suggested to replace the entire system. However, mitsubishi is telling us that they have to be able to reproduce the problem in order to fix the brakes and we were advised to "keep on driving until the problem occurs" - do they really want to pay the cost of a wrongful death/ dismemberment suit rather than the cost of parts and labor to repair faulty brakes which they have already recalled? We have to wait to see if the dealer can reproduce the brakes malfunction to see if they will cover the cost of repairs. This has been a nightmare and we are left without a car or even the offer of loaner vehicle during this time. I cannot wait to sell this car and be rid of mitsubishi and their awful customer service.

When braking to stop, the brake pedal experienced a longer than normal pedal stroke resulting in a rear end collision. It is an intermittent problem. The 2006 eclipse has a recall for this exact problem. 2007-2008 eclipses should also be recalled to fix this potential problem. There are several online posts describing this problem on a 2008 eclipse. *tr

My car suddenly stopped starting. I thought it was the battery so i had that replaced, but upon further inspection it was discovered that my starter had gone bad. I had the starter replaced in august of 2011 (that's too soon for a 2008). On july 16, 2012 i had to have another brand new starter installed in my eclipse. Two brand new starters in less than a year is unacceptable and it makes it worse that the car is a 2008. I feel like mitsubishi needs to do a recall on this part. *tr

There has been intermittent brake failure for four years. Many trips to the mechanic (180 degrees auto in phoenix arizona) included replacement of master cylinder twice and numerous brake jobs that never fixed the problem. Now we find that mitsubishi has known about the problem, has issued a warning, but has yet to provide a fix for this issue. We will not drive this car any longer as we never know when the failure will occur and we never want anyone hurt.
