• Recall 156981 [USA]: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. an underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. these scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  Mitsubishi motors north america, inc. (mmna) is recalling certain 1998-2000 montero vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with non-azide driver air bag inflators (nadi) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (psan) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the nadi inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  mmna will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began february 25, 2021. Owners may contact mmna customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mmna's number for this recall is sr-20-001.

  Certain passenger vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 208, 'occupant crash protection.' the bilingual english/spanish removable air bag warning labels affixed to the dash and to the sunvisor do not meet the size requirements of the standard.
  mitsubishi caribbean will mail a customer notification letter containing a written description and a graphic of the bi-lingual dashboard air bag warning label. In addition, all current 2000-2004 nativa owners will also receive replacement air bag alert labels for the sun visors. This recall is expected to begin during march or april 2005. The notification to the nativa owners is expected to begin during april or may 2005. Owners should contact mitsubishi caribbean at 1-787-251-8715.

  Vehicle description: passenger and sport utility vehicles. The bolt securing the crankshaft pulley can become loose and the pulley could fall off the vehicle.
  on the mirage vehicles, the dealers will install a new, improved crankshaft pulley bolt on the older engines. On new engines which already have the improved bolt, the dealer will tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to the correct torque specification. On the montero models, dealers will tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to the correct torque specifications. If the bolt is damaged, it will be replaced.

  dealers will inspect the front brake lines for signs of wear and routing. If the lines are not correctly centered in the pass-through hole, the lines will be repositioned by bending slightly to correct. If there is evidence of brake line wear, the brake line will be replaced.

At the moment the only situation that i have had with the mitsubishi airbag recall is that when i call the customer relations department they say they do not have the parts, that supposedly the mitsubishi company has not yet sent the replacement parts.....I have to call within 2 months to see if the parts have arrived at the repair shops.

The vehicle was taken to southside mitsubishi in orlando and because a mechanic named bob who's been there for over 20 years says it's the original but it's not the original bolt they don't want to honor the recall i argued with them multiple times.. The original bolt is me203072, and the montero has the same bolt as the pajero . I had been experiencing the smell of gasoline inside the car, stronger when i open the back rear luggage area and rear of montero (closest to the gas fuel tank underneath). I do not see any active leak on the floor. My car has no damage, such as being rear ended or bumper damage at all. The tank may be defective or vaporizing into interior of car.

I turned my ac on and smelled something burning and my car battery light and brake light as well as my at light came on and then my radio, ac,dome light and moon roof wont close i took my car to the dealer and they wanted 400$ just to diagnose the problem and that doesn't include fixing it i took it to pepboys and they told me i could of had fire with a bad malfunction. *js

While traveling on route 632, another vehicle failed to yield the right of way, entered and stopped in the intersection of route 632 & route 645 in new jersey; causing my suv to broad sided their pick-up truck. Luckily there were no fatalities. However, neither the mitsubishi driver or passenger side air bags deployed upon impact.

While traveling on the new jersey turnpike, i-78, and other highways, the mitsubishi alternator intermittently failed, causing loss of power steering and other electrically control functions. What makes this notably is that it was the 5th alternator that failed and had to be replaced within 1-1/2 years. Each time while driving on highways between 55 and 65 mph the alternator failed and sudden loss of vehicle steering control and operation, occurred with narrow escapes from serious accidents while navigating to safety.

I was driving along i-17 near phoenix, az merging onto i-10 west - when all of the sudden i couldn't steer the vehicle. All while going 65 mph. It took every bit of my strength to maneuver the vehicle safely off the highway to avoid an accident. I had it towed to mark mitsubishi in avondale, az for repairs. After several days the "repairs" were done. The damage was due to the bolt - crank shaft pulley - i paid nearly $600 for repairs. Four and a half weeks later, the same thing happened, this time i was driving an hour from my home on 202 in chandler when i was getting off the highway, as soon as i got on the off ramp, i heard metal hit and saw something fly across the off-ramp. Again, i had my vehicle to towed to the dealership for yet another repair of the same problem. Then april 8th, again it appears to be the same problem, the dealership said they can't fix it a third time. They refunded my money from the first repair. A local mechanic was able to get the bolt back in, for it to come out again today, april 26th. There was a recall on this vehicle, that did not fix the issue. Now i have a truck that is not safe to drive and the dealership will not work on it. I was in two separate incidents with this vehicle at high rates of speed and was very fortunate that i was not injured and that i did not get into accident injuring anyone else. This is a manufacturer issue that mitsubishi needs to be held accountable for before someone is killed or permanently injured.

The contact pulled over and noticed that the driving belts were dislodged and the crankshaft bolt was hanging off the vehicle. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

I bought a 1998 mitsubitshi montero sport ls approx. 9 months ago and while it ran great about a month ago i started noticing when i would go to start it up it would act like the battery was going dead. So i replaced the battery. The problem still occurred. Then about 4 days after that out of no where the engine would start squealing. But that would only last for about 30 seconds. And stop until the turn would be off long enough for the engine to get cold. Well i was on my way out of town to see a medical specialist for my daughter's continuing medical condition and the truck just shut down in the middle of the highway luckily we were not hit by any other motor vehicles. After getting the truck off the road i looked under the hood, seen and picked up a pulley off the ground with a long bolt still inside of it, i later learned that it was a crank shaft pulley which had caused me to throw the timing in the truck. I lost my job, missed the doctors appt for my daughter and have been without a vehicle every since that incident on january 28,2009. Now i do understand that the truck is approx 11 years old but before i bought it i took it to the mitsubishi dealership and had them inspect it and hook it up to a machine. They told me that for an older truck it is in great condition. And that nothing was work that they seen off found on the computer, with the truck. *tr

Driving to store i accelerated from a stop sign and car continued to accelerate after taking foot off gas pedal. Tried to stomp on throttle to get it unstuck, but it did not work. Finally after about a mile and a half and speeds past 80 miles per hour throttle released on its own. I have not found any safety recalls on this very scary malfunction and maker says take it to a dealer. *tr

We experienced a small sleet/freezing rain event. I turned on the front wipers for a fraction of a second because i realized the blades were frozen. I proceeded to clean the windshield and warm up the vehicle. After warming up the vehicle the wipers would not work; the 15 amp fuse had not blown; and i could not find a wiper motor circuit breaker (i purchased the service manuals when i purchased the vehicle). To my amazement this is what is stated in the vehichle owner's manual "before operationg the wipers in cold weather, check to be sure the wipers are not frozen (good advice).Attempting to operate while the blades are frozen could casue the wiper moter to burn out". The next statement goes on to say this "if the moving wipers become blocked by ice or other deposits on the glass the motor may burn out even if the wither switch is at off." the motor may burn out just when you need it the most; the fuse does not protect the wiper motor (it did not); and there is no circuit breaker to protect the motor even though there is one in the schematic in the service manual. The motor did burn out within the fraction of a second. I called several different mitsubishi dearlerships and they all told me that this is a common issue and they had replaced numerous wiper motors. Now there is something seriously wrong with this picture. What is wrong is that anyone who has an inkling of basic electronics comprhends the purpose and uses for fuses and circuit breakers. These devices are utilized to protect important electrical components. There is an invisible circuit breaker in the repair manual and a 15 amp fuse that did not open and there is a wiper motor that will burn out even with the wiper switch is off. I have work with several well trained mechanics for many years and there was a saying when we found ignorant mistakes made by u.S. Manufactureres. The quote was "built in detroit (japan)by idiots". This is my summary statement regarding the wiper motor in this vehicle. *cn

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 mitsubishi montero. While driving 40 mph,the power steering failed. The mechanic stated that the front crank shaft pulley bolt detached and caused the pulley to wobble. This failure was encompassed in recall # 00v311000. The dealer stated that this vehicle was excluded from the recall. However, the contact strongly believed otherwise. I was driving my 1998 montero sport and lost power steering in the middle of a major highway. My belts broke which i had to get a wrecker to tow my vehicle get it to a mechanic and he calls back with you have major problems. The reason the belts jumped off was the crank shaft pulley came loose and screwed the harmonic balance and other things up. I could have been killed or injured and i know this was a recall on the 1998's but i bought this vehicle used so i do not know if it was taken in for the recall and now my mechanic says sometimes repairing this does not always hold so he would not warranty my 800.00 of damage. He did say this was a problem with mitsubishi vehicles in the design and i was lucky it did not screw the motor up. Vehicles with this problem should not be allowed to be on the roads. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle lost the ability to move and there was a squealing noise coming from the engine. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The pulley was broken. There was a recall for the vehicle concerning the bolts in the crank shaft pulley. There was also a recall for the engine, nhtsa # 00v311001. The vin is included in the recall. But the manufacturer will not approve the recall performance because the regular maintenance of the vehicle was done by an independent repair shop.

Manufacturer defect...Emergency brake cable wore a hole in vehicle's gas tank. Both brake cable and gas tank were in the position as manufactured. *nm

Minor problem with swelling in driver side airbag, 1998 mits montero, vin[xxx]. Purchased new in santa maria ca. The swelling airbag has caused continuous horn activation. The horn has been disconnected. Questions: do you have any other incidents that indicate a trend where the driver side air bag has affected the horn? Is this a safety issue? The dealer in san antonio says the airbag still works but can't be replaced under warranty since the vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it. Windshield wiper motor quit working about a year ago, then started up again the next day, no other trouble until now, has quit completely. Vehicle only has 120k miles on it now...Was less than 100k last year when it happened the first time.

The consumer struck another vehicle from the rear at 40 mph , and the air bag did deploy.

When consumer purchased vehicle he was told that the vehicle was never involved in any accident. When driving approximately 60 mph, consumer rear ended a car. When impacting, the air bags did not deploy. After investigation it was determined that the vehicle was involved in an prior accident and had no air bags. *nm

During my drive to work at esm marketing, i was driving on i95 in broward county florida, and got off on cypress creek road and i was attempting to make a left hand turn and when i turned my steering wheel, the wheels did not move. The front end of the steering left me unble to control or manipulate my vehicle. I landed on a median strip, magically back out of the median and made my way to a shell gas station. I had the gentlemen look at the car and he stated to me that "you must have a guardian angel cause i don't know how you suvived the stop". I had my mechanic come to my car and repair this damage and he stated that same thing. " in all the 16 years as a mechanic he never say anything like this before. He repair the front end. Apparently, the mitsubishi front end streering wheel part where the part twisted into the sleeve of the front end was stripped. My mechanic repair this damage and first choice is the mechanic that came to my rescue. My mechanic repaired the damage and told me that the part needs to be recalled and that i should get a reimbursement on the incident. *ak

While driving 5 mph crank shaft bolt snapped. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.*ak

On july 2002, at 65,378 miles dealer replaced the manual transmission. 2 year later, dealership indicated to the consumer the transmission needed to be replaced again. *ak

While driving approximately 65 mph left front wheel would lock. Had taken vehicle to dealership. Mechanic indicated that rotors/pads p and calipers needed replacing. Had pads/calipers and rotor replaced, but problem still occurred.*ak

While passing another vehicle at 60 mph gas pedal became stuck and vehicle accelerated to above 80 mph. Pumping the brake pedal was of no use, but using the emergency brakes eventually stopped the vehicle.*ak

In a frontal head on collision vehicle impacteed on a tree, and it pushed radiator into engine, and frame bent because vehicle had no bumper. Not sure if it came from maufacturer without it or it was removed.*ak

While on freeway heard a bang then car started running rough, losing power steering, and engine died. Mechanic said that crankshaft/ pulley fell off , bolt had sheared in half. *ak

At 55mph a smell of plastic burning was smelled, than a loud sound was heard and looked back and the whole back hatch glass was shattered. I think the think the defroster overheated. It lefted a orange looking spot on the glass where the defroster connected to the glass.

At stop light. Hit in rear by car going atleast 45 mph. Neck whip-lash despite 3 point seatbelt and added thickness headrest as seatbelt collapsed backward to horizontal position. Unable to move seat fully upright (80%) after that. Car pushed about 20 ft. Tow hitched attached to frame reduced further back damage. Metal particles found in differential - probably form impact moving car in stopped position.

On impact, the rear seat belt came undone and the airbags did not deploy.

Vehicle was parked in the garage and consumer went to shiftgear, and vehicle made noise and it was rough. So when he put it in shift, gear popped. Dearlership was aware of problem. *ak

Windshield on the passenger's side has a bad blind spot. It portrudes just outside the side mirror. Was at a stop light & did not notice any vehicles along side of vehicle. Pulled off when light turned green and hit the other vehicle on the passenger's side. *ak

I have done almost everything possible to resolve the problem with the subject vehicle, from sending letters to the dealership to mitsubishi motors sales of america to the maryland state attorney general's office. There are questionable practices being employed by ourisman mitsubishi and m.M.S.A. In their assessment of the vehicle's problem, along with the non-replacement of damaged tires that were on the vehicle when it was purchased and to date, only one tire has been replaced by the dealer....Also, m.M.S.A. Sent a regional rep. To assess the referenced vehicle and the rep., who claimed to be an expert on the referenced vehicle is not a certified mechanic nor is he a degreed engineer. I find the entire ordeal that i experienced is one that no other purchaser of a vehicle, from a dealership should be forced to endure...The subject vehicle was owned only by ourisman mitsubishi before it was purchased by me. I have supporting documentation indicating the steps taken to have the problem with the subject vehicle corrected and to date, the problem persists( dot number: y815b tire size: 265/70r15 )

Compartment for eye glasses does not close, while driving vibration causes it to open, latch has to be shut several times. *yc

I was in an accident six weeks after i purchased my montero. Stuart lincoln-mercury, who is an authorized dealer, repaired my montero. My front end was supposed to be aligned. At 6400 miles, i had my tires rotated, and i saw that the tires on the passanger side were wearing as if they were out of alignment. I took my montero back to the shop to have it checked. I was told they aligned my front end while my vehicle was being repaired for the accident. I was told that mitisubishi uses cheap tires, and that is normal wear. I aso had tire kingdom, (a certified yokohama representitive) evaluate my tires. They said the front end must be out of alignment. Again, i went back to mitsubishi, and again, i was told that there was nothing wrong with my alignment. I'm afraid, if this is true, i will have to be replacing my tires every 6400 to 10,000 miles. I was also told that they have seen this happen on these monteros. I believe, if my tires are going to wear like this, there has to be a more serious problem with my vehicle. Front tire developed bumps in tread and made ride uncomfortable. Yh

From the date of purchase of vehicle which was during the daytime hours, problem was discovered that same night . Specifically, the front headlights have poor illumination on low beam, therefore presents shadows on shoulder, lines in lense of headlights leaves impressions on pavement on both sides, driver side lines cut off light beam when going down hills to only 10 to 20 feet at a sharp angle with no illumination ahead of you, causing loss of vision. Residential areas and rural areas in virginia, this is a major problem with safety when in a situation that you cannot have your headlights on bright because of oncoming vehicles. On many curves and dips, there is almost total blackness directly in front of drivers side. Vehicle situation has been discussed with dealer several times, at this point, the problem has not been resolved. We feel this is a definite safety hazard for our family and needs to be resolved immediately before there is an accident. We suggested installing driving lights on the 98 to help with the illumination on low beams, because 99's have driving lights on them, dealer said mitsubishi rep said no, if we wanted driving lights, we needed to buy a new 99. We feel that company should fix the problem on vehicle we purchased since it is unsafe. Driving lights may not correct problem but is a possible solution we have come up with. Thanks. *ak

Occasionally when making a complete stop and attempting to accelerate engine cuts off or slows down when on highway. Contacted dealer and manufacturer. *ak

Vehicle was parked with engine running. After approx. 10 min vehicle jumped into gear and crashed.

Battery was replaced 5 times, 2 times alternator was replaced & there were other electrical problems. Dealer had been saying that problem with the battery was weather related. They seemed not to really know what the remedy was. *ak

Since the day of purchase we have had the same problem and have attempted to try to fix the problem, but have been unsuccessful. The dealership acknowledged the problem and stated they cannot fix it because they are not sure why it is happening. Tires on the driver, front and rear were put on backwards. Have contacted the company numerous times and have had three representatives look at the car with no satisfaction yet. We have sent registered letters, but have had no response. We live in a rural area and the roads are very curvy and this problem could contribute to a real problem. Constant vibration at 50 and over, heavy shaking, steering wheel must ne held by 2 hands. *ak

From the outset, i have experienced constant, continued vibration from the front end of this vehicle, the dealer has balanced the wheels but refuses to try changing the wheels themselves...This is a safety issue as the vibration is rapidly and excessively wearing the front tires, and the vibration is worst between 50-60 miles per hour, a different dealer admitted to wife that the company knows of the wheel/suspension defect but will not handle the matter- help please!

Front end vibrates when driving at 65mph. Dealer contacted five times,. Stated normal driving condition, problem cannot be duplicated, problem still exists. Provide further information. *ak

Due to non -tightening/missing of the lower ball joint nut by the manufacturer. While driving the vehicle the right wheel almost came off, causing loss of vehicle control, resulting in the consumer hitting a guardrail. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Please provide any further details. *ak

Vehicle shakes while driving.

When driving the fuel line broke away for the engine and caused the fuel to pour out over the engine. The problem has been repaired by dealer. Dealer stated that a bracket was missing from the fuel line. *ak

1998 mitsubishi montero sport recalls. Consumer states that they would like any information about any recalls on their vehicle. *kb

When montero runs into a fllod are with speed of 30 mph or over, water may spread over windshield/roof, making it difficult for driver to see anything for a few seconds.

Consumer has heard a continuos wind noise from the time of purchase which has never been corrected properly. Nlm

The problem is when montero runs into a flood area (about only 4 inches deep water) with speed about 30 mph, water may spread over the windshield and roof that the drive could not see anything for a couple of seconds. It is potentially dangerous and scaring, especially on a high-speed freeway. I believe it needs additional fenders or a re-designed front skid plate under the bumper to stop the upward water.

Was pulling out off parking lot and crankshaft pulley bolt broke or sheared off. Had no steering control at 10mph. Just managed to drive vehicle to dealership. Mechanic indicated that bolt could not be removed from crankshaft. Entire crankshaft was to be replaced. *ak

When vehicle exceeds speeds of 60 mph steering wheel vibrates. Cause of vibration is undetermined. *ak

Vehicle vibrates over 60 mph. Two repair attempts have been made.

When vehicle runs through water approximately four inches deep, at approximately 30 mph, water may spread over the windshield and roof not allowing driver to see for a couple of seconds.

When driving at night and using high beam lights, the high beam lights shine about 150 feet forward to the left side of the road. Consumer had taken vehicle to repair shop four to five times, and the dealer can't determine the cause of the problem. *ak

While traveling 40 mph a sa result of an accident vehicle rolled over, and air bags did not deploy without indications. Please provide further information. *ak

While making a right or left consumer would hear noise for the front of the vehicle. Dealer has been contacted. Please at purchase, a slight churp was noticed, front right. It was checked, but not corrected. Afterwards, noise increased steadily. A front right brake was fixed, but continued to rattle. Sway bar/ bushings were repaired. Also steering became loose. However, churping continued. Diagnosis by a localmechanic claimed that churping and rattling was due to a defective sway bar link and peeling top bushing. But mitshibishi dealers disagreed with the diagnosis, and persuaded consumer to leave vehicle as it is. *ak

The warning concerning the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley is incorrect. The bolt on my vehicle was tightened to spec on three different occations. Failure continued. There is additional problems with the alignment of the crankshaft. If safety is your true concern, this problem should be studied further. I know of 3 other vehicles in this small town that have had this problem.Thi

When slowing down and without any indication vehicle would stall. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information. *ak

Recall 00v311001- consumer received recall letter concerning crankshaft pulley. Contacted dealer, dealer had no tools to correct recall problem. Please give any further details. *ak

When driving at highway speed, the door made a loud roaring noise as if the door was slightly open. *jb

While driving 70 mph harmonic balance assembly detached from the vehicle. An independent mechanic determined that the crank shaft pulley bolt broke which caused the failure. *ak
