NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall R/2004/168 [UK]: Brake fluid may leak
Due to an improper washing process of a metal part within the brake master cylinder there is a possibility that the groove for installing the rubber seal ring which is located at the end of the master cylinder may be corroded. In this condition brake fluid may leak from the seal or a small amount of air may enter the master cylinder which could lead to an increase in vehicle stopping distance.
vehicles that are likely to be affected will be checked and a quality assured part fitted if necessary.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

Similar to the hundreds of other early affected 1zz engines (mr2, corolla, matrix, vibe and others) my engine is currently burning 1 quart every 400 miles. My mechanic has noted that it is due to piston rings or the off shaped bore in earlier 1zz engines. So the engine is burning oil and my head is also being starved for much needed oil. I am now jeopardizing the oxygen sensors and catalytic converter which were just replaced. *tr

In june of 2006 i heard a ticking noise in the engine of my 2000 mr2 spyder. When i brought t to the dealership they told my i had spun a bearing due to oil starvation, even though i had my oil changed every 3000 miles. The dealership replaced the bearings and crank and the noise was gone. 2 months later, after driving 4000 miles and having the oil changed after 2500, the ticking noise returned. The dealership again stated that i had a spun bearing due to oil starvation. When investigated further the tech said that the small block of the engine isn't allowing oil to reach the pistons. When i searched online i found that multiple other mr2 spyder owners have experienced the same problems. *jb

The car has had all scheduled maintenance. The car was inspected and full of oil on june 27, 2003. The car was driven ten days in total, for approx. 600 miles since that date. The car passed an emissions test (at high rpm) on july 29, 2003. The car engine died on august 1, 2003. The engine suffered oil starvartion, and requires a replacement engine. Toyota has denied any warranty coverage, claiming the oil starvation was due to my negligence. This is despite the fact that i have proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the car lost all of its oil in a two-day period. Remaining engine oil was reported to be somewhat sludgy.

Oil control rings allowed oil into combustion chamber, damaging pre-cats in exhaust header. Main catylitic converter then failed causing increased backpressure and inability to expel full exhaust charge which futher damaged compression/oil control rings which cause more oil to burn.*ak

Major oil loss, during driving caused engine to spin two bearings. A quick loss of power was evident. Oil control rings were letting oil pass through cause the catalytic conver to clogg up and cause too much back preasure. The back preasure caused larger damage to internal engine componnents(loss of main bearings and the further disintagration of catalytic convertor).
