• Recall 138000 [USA]: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
  Daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) is recalling certain 2002-2017 freightliner cascadia, century class, columbia and coronado trucks and western star 4700, 4900, 5700, 5900 and 6900 trucks. These vehicles are equipped with kidde plastic-handle or push button 'pindicator' fire extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable.   Daimler trucks north america (dtna) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 freightliner, sterling, and western star vehicles manufactured from july 7, 2008, through december 15, 2011, and equipped with perpendicular air tank mounting brackets. The air tank mounting brackets may develop cracks which can lead to the air tank brackets separating from the frame rail. The air tanks may also separate from the vehicle.

  Issue: on certain trucks, a leak around the windshield could allow water to collect in the connector for the recirculation door actuator for the heating and air condition system. This could lead to damage of the wiring and other parts. As a result, the air conditioning and heating systems may not work properly. There could also be a chance of a short circuit. Safety risk: a short circuit could create the risk of fire. Corrective actions: daimler trucks north america (dtna) will notify owners by mail and provide information on how to inspect for water leaks around the windshield. This is particularly important if the windshield has been replaced. Any repairs necessary to fix a leak or replace parts will be at the owner's expense.

Canadian regulations require enough air reservoir capacity to ensure the brakes work even with heavy use or when there is a partial loss of the air system.   On certain vehicles equipped with kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage.   On certain trucks, the air tank mounting brackets may crack, which could allow the tank to detach from the vehicle. • Recall 2012080 [Canada]: Fuel supply
  On certain trucks equipped with a detroit diesel dd13, dd15 or dd16 engine, the support system for the high pressure fuel line (between the fuel pump and the fuel delivery rail) may be damaged during a service repair procedure. Incorrect torque applied to the dampener "p" clip fasteners may damage the fasteners, which could allow the clips to loosen. This could result in a cracked fuel line and a diesel fuel leak. Diesel fuel leakage may ignite on a hot engine surface and cause a fire. As well, diesel fuel spilt on the roadway could endanger other road users by making the roadway unexpectedly slippery. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the high pressure fuel line and install a more robust fuel line support system.

  Examination of safety recall filings for recalls 17v-761, 17v-810, 18v-157, and 18v-163 as submittedby daimler trucks north america (dtna) has raised concerns about the timeliness and scope of these recalls. In particular, odi is concerned that dtna may not have acted with appropriate speed in making a defect determination and filing with the agency. • Air brake reservoir bracket fracture investigation # PE12018

  The office of defects investigation (odi) received early warning reporting (ewr) data from the manufacturer that indicated some number of subject vehicles had allegedly experienced a fracture of one or more support brackets resulting in an unsecured air brake reservoir.This could result in a loss of air pressure necessary for proper service brake application and a potential road hazard if the reservoir separates from the vehicle in operation.By letter dated august 15, 2012, daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) has notified odi that it has initiated a safety recall (identified by nthsa recall no. 12v-405 and dtna recall no. Fl-631) to address a safety defect in approximately 1,663 model year (my) 2009 through 2012 freightliner 114sd, business class m2, cascadia, coronado, sterling 9500 and western star 4700 trucks manufactured from july 7, 2008 through december 15, 2011, originally equipped with a specific perpendicular oriented air brake reservoir support bracket (p/n 12-22981-000).To date odi is unaware of any bracket failures that resulted in a complete separation of the reservoir from the vehicle.Affected owners will be notified by dtna beginning october 15, 2012 and affected vehicles will have the subject air brake reservoir support brackets replaced with a more robust bracket.Repairs will be performed by dtna authorized service facilities.Copies of dtnas reimbursement plan for pre-notification remedies will be submitted to odi as a supplemental report when available.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.
