• Recall 138081 [USA]: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
  Daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) is recalling certain 2002-2017 freightliner cascadia, century class, columbia and coronado trucks and western star 4700, 4900, 5700, 5900 and 6900 trucks. These vehicles are equipped with kidde plastic-handle or push button 'pindicator' fire extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable.   Dtna is recalling certain 2002 through 2011 western star 4900 sa trucks manufacturer from december 21, 2001 through june 4, 2010. The spacer used to connect the aft steer axle idler arm to the frame rail may develop cracks and eventually break under severe steering conditions allowing the idler arm to separate from the frame rail resulting in diminished steering control.

  Issue: on certain trucks, the welds that attach the trailer hitch may crack due to improper welding. As a result, the hitch could detach from the truck while towing a trailer. Note: this recall only affects certain trucks with trailer hitches installed by commercial truck equipment. Safety risk: a trailer that detaches from a truck could create a risk of a crash. Corrective actions: commercial truck equipment will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect the trailer hitch and repair or replace it, as necessary. You should stop using the trailer hitch until the inspection and repair have been completed.

  On certain vehicles equipped with kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage.   On certain twin-steer 4900sa vehicles, the spacer used to connect the aft steer axle idler arm to the frame rail may develop cracks and eventually break under severe steering conditions. This would allow the idler arm to separate from the frame rail, resulting in diminished steering control, which could lead to a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will replace the tubular shaped spacer bracket with a solid spacer block.

  On certain vehicles, burner tubes in the webasto dbw 2010 scholastic coolant heater may begin deteriorating at an accelerated rate and could fail. Burner tube failure could result in an increase in exhaust gas temperature which could ignite combustible material in or around the vehicle. Correction: dealers will replace the burner tubes.

• Recall 2004085 [Canada]: Steering
  On certain vehicles, the trw drag link clamp assembly may contain an improperly torqued hex nut. If the final tightening of this nut is less than 65 ft.Lbs, the clamp load would be unacceptably low and could compromise the integrity of the drag link to the point where the ball socket could separate causing a loss of steering control which could result in a vehicle crash. Correction: dealer will re-torque the drag link nut to between 70 and 85 ft.Lbs.

  On certain vehicles, fatigue cracks can initiate in the weld joining the bracket pin to its mounting flange on the fifth wheel assembly. Weld failures could lead to the loss of the pin and the potential separation of the fifth wheel top plate from its mounting structure without warning. Correction: dealers will replace the bracket pins.

  Examination of safety recall filings for recalls 17v-761, 17v-810, 18v-157, and 18v-163 as submittedby daimler trucks north america (dtna) has raised concerns about the timeliness and scope of these recalls. In particular, odi is concerned that dtna may not have acted with appropriate speed in making a defect determination and filing with the agency. This investigation will examine whether dtna acted in conformance with its responsibilities under the safety act and selected an appropriate scope for these recalls.
