• Recall 232453 [USA]: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  Kia america, inc. (kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 sorento, 2021-2022 sorento hybrid (hev), 2022-2023 sorento plug-in hybrid (phev), and 2017-2022 sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (pcb) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed august 11, 2023. • Recall 206333 [USA]: An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury.
  Kia motors america (kia) is recalling certain 2017-2021 sportage and cadenza vehicles. The electrical circuit in the hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) may short-circuit, which can cause a fire in the engine compartment.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box. Vehicles equipped with an electronic parking brake (epb) will also receive a hecu software update. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on april 30, 2021. Owners may contact kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is sc206.

• Recall 130146 [USA]: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  Kia motors america (kia) is recalling certain 2011-2017 optima, 2012-2017 sorento and 2011-2018 sportage vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17v-224, warranty, or the knock sensor detection system (ksds) product improvement campaign. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.
  kia has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began january 17, 2019. Owners may contact kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is sc172.

• Recall 2021680 [Canada]: Electrical
  Issue: certain vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer wiring harness that could fail. Over time, water could leak into the control module and cause a short circuit. If this happens, there could be loss of the trailer lights. Note: this recall affects trailer wiring harness kits that may have been ordered at the time of a vehicle purchase, or purchased separately from a dealer as an aftermarket accessory. Safety risk: a loss of trailer lights could make the trailer less visible. In addition, other drivers may not recognize that the vehicle ahead is braking or intends to turn. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the trailer wiring harness. If the harness is from the lot (batch) affected by this problem, the dealer will replace it. Kia recommends that you should always check to ensure that trailer lights work properly before towing.

  Issue: on certain vehicles, a problem in the control module for the antilock brake system (abs) could cause it to short circuit. Note: this recall does not affect vehicles equipped with smart cruise control (scc). Safety risk: a short circuit could create a fire risk. Corrective actions: kia will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install new abs fuse(s) and, on certain models, update the hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) software. Kia recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

  Issue: kia canada is conducting a product improvement campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure may cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the engine control module. Note: vehicles repaired under service campaign sc023 already have this software update.

  Issue: when the engine was replaced under warranty or under kia's product improvement campaign sc023, the high pressure fuel pipe may not have been properly installed on the fuel pump outlet. • Hyundai and kia abs module fires investigation # AQ23002

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando. The part 573 recall reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by mando. Safety recalls included in this audit query (aq) review include: hyundai recalls 20v-520, 20v-543, 21v-161, 21v-160, 21v-303, 22v-056, 22v-810, and 23v-651. Kia recalls 16v-815, 20v-518, 20v-519, 21v-137, 21v-331, 22v-051, 22v-800, and 23v-652 the purpose of this aq is to evaluate the timeliness and scoping of hyundai and kia’s defect decision making and adherence with reporting requirements; and understand the varying defect descriptions and remedies between these recalls.

• Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received a petition on july 13, 2022, requesting a defect investigation into an alleged defect of the "oil drain pan assemblies" on the following 83 models/model year vehicles stated by the petitioner: 2006-2019 hyundai sonata, 2013-2018 hyundai santa fe sport, 2010-2012 and 2019-2020 hyundai santa fe, 2010-2015 and 2018-2019 hyundai tucson, 2011-2021 kia sportage 2005-2020 kia optima, 2011-2020 kia sorento, 2010-2013 kia forte, 2010-2013,kia forte coup, and 2007-2010 kia rondo vehicles equipped with the 1.6l t-gdi gamma, 2.4l theta ii gdi, 2.4l in-line gdi theta ii, kappa, and 3.8l v-shaped gdi lambda-ii engines. The petition also cites additional hyundai/kia vehicles that use similar drain pan assemblies as the above-mentioned vehicles as having drain pan assembly failures. The petitioner provided subject and peer vehicles information related to alleged engine failures. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745.According to the petition, the hyundai/kia vehicle owners have made allegations of oil leakage failures occurring at highway speeds, without malfunction, indicator lights, or the leakage associated with under-tightening an oil drain plug, or a plug or pan with damaged thread. The alleged defects are causing engines to seize and loss of motive power. A defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petitioner identified a number of complaints received by nhtsa alleging complete engine failure from a variety of models stated above along with other models. I was driving to work, sitting at a stoplight when my car started releasing smoke from under the hood. All warning lights lit up, the car stalled, and the smoke got darker and more intense. Within a minute, flames started appearing under the front of the vehicle and began spreading towards the back of the car

The contact owns a 2018 kia sportage. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 21v137000 (service brakes, hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact called the local dealer an it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Initially, i attempted to crank the vehicle by pressing the starter button. I heard a click and noticed quick flashing lights from the dash, then nothing happened except clicks, noises and minimal light as if the battery was down. There was nothing on inside the car to cause battery failure. The brake was hard to press down to restart the vehicle. Therefore, i opted to jump-start the car and it immediately powered up. All of the lights on the dashboard flashed on a few times then the letters afls appeared on the dashboard. The radio/gps display continued to flicker and flash on and off nonstop as i continued to drive. I allowed the car to run for 5 minutes at home then proceeded to drive. After driving for 25 minutes on the highway, i turned to park, the steering wheel locked then unlocked in the process. I stopped to check to make sure that i was in the proper gear, still in disbelief that this steering wheel locking was occurring. I proceeded to back up the vehicle when the wheel locked again. I checked to see if the car was still running after that harder lock/jerk in the parking lot. I stopped the car, placed it in park without turning off the engine to gather myself because this was a very frightening and alarming experience to say the least. I didn't turn off the engine because i was uncertain if it would restart considering what occurred earlier with jump-starting the car. I drove back home making a concerted effort to drive slowly on the street. I then entered the open ramp onto the highway. I took extreme precautions and hoping that the steering wheel would not lock again which may have further caused my family and i to be placed into harm's way, not to mention the other drivers to be in danger on the road. I hope that immediate attention will be given to this matter to avoid further terror and trepidation, any injuries and/or loss of life.

According to kia which they posted at their website, electrical circuit within hecu may experience excessive current, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire.Took the car to dealer, had no parts, as of 4/12/21 no kia dealer has this part. Called kia, they supposedly going to ship parts end of april. They have no concern about public safety, despite i told them i can rent a car but you have to pay for it, that declined. Question is, why they haven't informed public and send the hecu parts to their dealers sooner? Taking risk to drive a car which has potential to cut fire seems not safe and displays kia negligence.

Addendum to complaint on kia motors,kia america, citrus kia , their sell of first a brand new 2015 kia soul,now recalled 5 yrs later after we begged for help. We are 2 disabled person s who were duped by kia and citrus, traded in going into further debt after getting no where with nhtsa, kia etc. Kia motors traded and financed a brand new 2018 kia sportage only to have dangerous problems with it. Kia knowingly sold us 2 dangerous vehicle s, we had the knock sensor installed per the "upgrade", farce, should be recall. The car stalled in traffic and another dealership put in a wiring harness extension. We only have 13,000 miles on this car because we do not feel safe. The dealership did an oil change last year and day before yesterday. I received a text that our fuel needed additive. It is in " fair condition", recommend with every oil change. Not true, never recommended before and 13,000 miles. It should not need additive anywhere. See attached screenshot. I fully believe they are covering up even more as it relates to the problem ie settlement? Seriously. Our car is worth nothing. I implore our new head of transportation to look into our complaints since 2015 to include the inquiry by senator marco rubio. Joseph and julie mraz ♿ kia soul 2015 to kia sportage 2018. Black book value, resale value, insurance premium increase, how many times will kia be allowed to steal from us ?. This is dangerous on and off the road.
