  • Recall R/2018/355 [UK]: Activation of a non-dessicated ammonium nitrate inflator with degraded propellant may result in an inflator rupture
Activation of a non-desiccated ammonium nitrate inflator with degraded propellant may result in an inflator rupture.
replace the airbag inflator (lancer) or the airbag module (i) with a new non-an (ammonium nitrate) based unit.

  • Recall 2018166 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will replace the passenger side frontal airbag inflator with a new, non-ammonium-nitrate-based inflator. Note: this campaign supersedes recall 2015-236 and involves vehicles that previously received an inflator under that recall.

  • Recall 2017444 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. • Recall 2016317 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles, road salt can corrode the front crossmember assembly, which may ultimately lead to separation of the control arm at the mounting point. This would allow the wheel to rotate off its designed axis, and could result in a loss of vehicle control and a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect the crossmember and apply an anti-corrosion treatment or replace the assembly, as required.

  • Recall 2015236 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will replace front passenger airbag inflators. Note: this recall has been superseded. For unrepaired vehicles, see recall 2017444 for more information. Known Recall Investigations
  • Air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20150224

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe14-016 in june 2014 based on six inflator rupture incidents involving consumer owned vehicles produced by five vehicle manufacturers. All six vehicles were operated in florida or puerto rico at the time of the rupture and for the majority of their service life, and were equipped with inflators produced by takata, a tier-one supplier of automotive air bag systems.During the course of pe14-016, odi determined that five additional vehicle manufacturers used inflators of a similar design and vintage also supplied by takata. No evidence of field failures was found in vehicles produced by these five additional manufacturers.Nonetheless, at odis insistence, all 10 vehicle manufacturers initiated a regional recall within approximately two weeks of the opening of the investigation. The regions recalled initially included florida, puerto rico, hawaii, and the u.S. Virgin islands, areas with high absolute humidity and climatic conditions believed to be a significant factor in the inflator ruptures. As part of the recall actions, inflators removed from remedied vehicles are to be returned to takata for testing.Takatas initial test results on passenger inflators from remedied vehicles indicated a much higher than anticipated rupture frequency for inflators returned from florida.Accordingly odi requested all 10 manufacturers expand the regional recalls for passenger inflators to include other geographic areas where high absolute humidity conditions exist, including the gulf states and other coastal areas.Takatas testing of the passenger inflators to date continues to indicate this geographic area as having the highest risk, with no ruptures occurring from inflators returned from outside the expanded recall regions.During pe14-016 four additional passenger inflator field events occurred, all in vehicles from the same expanded geographic region. Also during pe14-016 four additional driver inflator field events occurred including two in vehicles from regions not known for high absolute humidity, specifically california and north carolina.Accordingly, odi requested all five of the affected vehicle manufacturers currently using the subject takata driver inflators expand to nationwide recalls.Significantly, neither of the affected vehicle manufacturers or takata provided any explanation to account for these two driver air bag inflator ruptures outside the area of high absolute humidity.Takata testing of returned driver inflators indicates a lower rupture frequency as compared to passenger inflator testing. All test ruptures reported by takata to date have occurred on inflators returned from high absolute humidity areas. The investigation now includes all manufacturers and vehicles known to be affected at this time.Odis investigation will focus on, among other things, root cause analysis, other potential defect consequences, identification of affected vehicles scope, and adequacy of the remedy. The five odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification numbers: 10537899, 10568848, 10585224, 10605877, 10651492

Takata recall. Had original airbag replaced 2 yrs ago. Received a letter from mitsubishi stating i needed to have it done again. I called customer service for mitsubishi when i learned they no longer have a mitsubishi dealership locally. I was advised at that time that the nearest dealership , in either direction, was 4-5 hours from where i live. I was advised that i needed to call all the mechanics in the area to find one that is certified by mitsubishi! If i could find one and they were mitsubishi certified, the work would be done and mitsubishi would pay for it. However, they need to have current certification. I have called a few dealerships in the area, but no one has a certification for mitsubishi. I didn't install the bad airbags. I would have to travel to either of these dealerships, spend the night in a motel, wait for the appointment and work to be done, and drive home. This is ridiculous! In the meantime, i have received a second letter from mitsubishi stating that i shouldn't allow anyone to ride in the passenger seat of the car until it's repaired. I don't know if the drivers side airbag is any good either. I would appreciate all the help you can give me. I feel like my car at the present time is useless. I'm in fear of driving even to the grocery store.

I was going to buy the crossmember myself but than a family member showed me a link that says this crossmember on my model could be a recall. Before i realized how corroded it was i took it to a dealership due to a recall on the passenger air bag and the dealership replace it and they sprayed some anti-corrosion on the crossmember but forgot to mention the hole the crossmember had. The vehicle was stationary at home

Takata recall my local mitsubishi dealer, cutter mitsubishi (https://www.Cuttermitsubishi.Com) has refused to fix the recall. I have telephoned more than five times, leaving detailed messages, including both the air bag recall and not including the air bag recall. They have never responded to one telephone call, and they never answer the phone. I have gone to their website and left a dozen requests for service noting i need the air bag recall fixed, and they have never, not once, replied to any requests. They should be forced to fix my airbag before it kills me and they should be punished with a significant monetary penalty for endangering my life and everyone else's life who can't get it fixed.

I am an owner of two mitsubishi cars; one bought new at a mits. Dealer in tucson, az 11 years ago and the other bought just a couple of months ago at a used car lot in tucson, az. Yesterday, i received an 'important safety recall' notice for both cars via mail. It's recommended to take care of the recall of the passenger air bag, that is described as causing serious injury or death. Yet, there is currently no local dealer where i live. Therefore, i called the phone number listed on the notice to address my concern. I was told i'd have to travel to another city over 80 miles one way to have this remedied. This would be much too inconvenient, unlike the promised 'every effort to minimize inconvenience' the notice reference. Shouldn't they allow this to be done by a certified mechanic in the city of tucson where i purchased the cars and reside; it's not my fault that they've had maultiple dealerships close down here? I am very unhappy with mits. Right now for causing me to have fear and not helping with the problem they informed me of... Not sure what to do...Updated 08/25/15 *bf updated 10/26/2015*cn

Dear administrator: there has been no accident....I am following instruction from letter. I recently received a letter notifying me of a safety recall regarding the passenger air bag inflater housing for 2004-2005 mitsubishi lancer vehicles. I currently still own a 2004 lancer mitsubishi and i am extremely concerned for the safety of any front seat occupants. Therefore, i immediately responded to the letter from mitsubishi and followed your instructions. Unfortunately, the response that i received was shocking and quite frankly, ridiculous! I was informed that i would be responsible to pay to ship my car from maui to honolulu in order to get my car repaired! The notification letter clearly states under the reason for notice that the safety recalls are in the areas of hawaii, florida, puerto rico, and the us virgin islands. Mitsubishi should assume that ?Special arrangements? Would have to be offered to service and repair in order to meet the requirements of the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act. If you recognized that this recall affects island customers why are you penalizing them for your manufacturing mistake, forcing them to ship their cars inter-island for repair? I am asking that mitsubishi please assume their responsibility and comply with the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act and pay for the shipping of my car from maui to honolulu to have my car repaired. At a minimum allow a certified mitsubishi motor dealer or certified mechanic in maui to make the necessary repair. Please keep this letter in your archives as my attempt to find a solution to get my car repaired to avoid injury or any life changing events as a result of negligence on your behalf. It makes driving an issue in various temperature changes. Thankfully the back window defrost is a button not a knob.

A recall was issued in 2005 for a potential issue in the power train. The recall stated that if the vehicle had a check engine light, the repair was to first try reprogramming the power train. If the check engine light appeared afterwards, the catalytic converter was to be replaced. The car was taken to the dealership for the above outlined service in 2005. The power train was reprogrammed and the check engine light went away, but the catalytic converter was not replaced. The check engine light later returned. A diagnostic revealed that the catalytic converter needed replaced. I believe that if the initial recall work in 2005 was properly fulfilled the catalytic converter would have been replaced. Mitsubishi has refused to repair of replace the catalytic converter, citing that the work done in the recall was sufficient. I contend that the recall repair was not thorough enough and that the catalytic converter should be repaired or replaced by the manufacturer.

Just left a auto car wash and within about two minutes smoke rises from the center floor console. I pulled into a nearby gas station about a block away. Parked away from the pumps. Demanded a fire extinguisher from the attendant. Returned to the car as flames just started to erupt from the console . The dry chemical extinguisher made quick work of the fire. I don't think between the smell & sight of smoke and putting out the fire five minutes elapsed. I think the wiring must have shorted. The cigarette lighter never worked. The only other the device on the harness into the console is the p-r-n-d illumination panel. The fire caused the plastic console housing to melt down into the top of the transmission linkage. The tow tuck operator was able to cut the melted plastic off of the linkage & i was able to dive the car home, a few blocks away. Climate control knobs are stuck in place and cannot be adjusted. This started out as an annoyance and quickly became a life-threatening defect when i was forced to drive down a windy mountain road at night in a heavy snowstorm without any ability to defrost my windows. Mitsubishi has acknowledged this problem via a tsb, and research clearly indicates that this is very common problem with 2003-2004 lancers. I own a 2004 mitsubishi lance ralliart sedan. The air control switch (knob used to adjust the temperature) began sticking/catching about in about 2006 (my car was already out of the warranty time frame due to mileage). The switch then broke completely off in 2008. To fix the problem the dealership needs to replace the entire heating control unit, modify (cut) the damper, and install a new lever which costs over $1600. I found that this same heater control unit has been used since 2002 in lancers, galants, endeavors, and other models - all having the same issue - it eventually fails and the owner is stuck paying more than $1600 to fix what should have been repaired in latter models or simply fixed with a new switch. *tr

The hvac(knobs on the dash for ac unit) temperature knob has broken off. In the previous months it became increasingly more difficult to turn from hot to cold. Checking online i located a temporary fix involving reaching under the dash near the gas pedal and pull/pushing the flap that control warm/cold. Not being able to actively change the temperature is a hazard in florida as we can suddenly change from sunny 'windows down' weather to torrential downpours with windows fogged. Likewise my niece and nephew cannot ride with me on our 'hot' days as the temperature could be detrimental to their health without a working ac unit. I have been unable to replace the knob or the wire that runs from it to the flap as this unit is damaged on all the 'used' hvac units at the car lots i have checked for parts.

I purchased a 2004 mitsubishi lancer ralliart sedan and paid it off in full upon reciept of the vehicle. In the past few years i have been experiencing numerous electrical issues, however my primary concern today is a sensor that is currently being replaced for the 5th time today. The sensor is called the app sensor. When it goes out, it causes my vehicle to rapidly decelerate and the engine won't rev past 2,500 rpm's. This has become an issue because two days ago the sensor went out on me again, after being replaced just weeks ago. This time when the sensor went out, it almost caused me to be involved in a major accident on i25. I have asked the service department why this part keeps failing on me and they replied "we don't know, your the only person we have had to replace this part for and dont know what could cause the part to go out." this concerns me a great deal because if they dont know how to repair, how can i trust my safety whenever i am driving my car on the highway again? I have been dealing with the service manager at arapahoe mitsubishi and service rep brian green. I have receipts of all repairs and can send them to you if you need them. *jb

I am permanently disabled with any problems and not being able to wear my seat bealt scares me as a seat belt save my life in jan 2005. *jb

1. After driving vehicle for an hour or less (depending on atmospheric conditions) a spark/static discharge occurs between the external metal surface of the vehicle and the first occupant exiting vehicle. *ak 2. This could potentially ignite fumes when the vehicle is refueling or in presence of other flammable gases/materials. Also potential could cause spark between the gas tank door and gas station fuel nozzle. This is as much of a danger as an annoyance due to the static discharge/spark is very strong. I do not experience this in other vehicles. 3. Dealer fails to acknowledge and correct this issue. *nm

I was approaching a street intersection, applying normal braking for a routine stop. When i was about 200 feet from the intersection, the engine accelerated for about two seconds and i had to greatly increase brake pressure to slow the car down. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55 mph, the vehicle's app sensor went out, which caused the vehicle to decelerate rapidly and not rev past 2500 rpms. The service department was contacted but could not find the cause of the problem. The app sensor was replaced 5 times. The contact had repair invoices available upon request. Updated 10/25/2006 - the brake light indicator on the dash remained on at all times. The dealer replaced the alternator. The ses light illuminated intermittently and the vehicle lacked power. The clutch slipped at time. The dealer replaced the clutch disc. *nm

We own a 2004 mitsubishi lancer 4 dr. While braking because the gas pedal is evidently to close you hit the brake and the gas and have a run away until you can get your foot off the gas pedal. This has happen to me at least 4-5 times. Yesterday as my wife was driving the vehicle she came to a red light and applied the brake and evidently the gas pedal at the same time and hit a stopped vehicle in front of her at the light. Luckily no injuries, but 3500 damages to the car. I asked why the air bag did not deploy and was told it was a high hit and did not deploy other wise it would have totaled our vehicle out. Is this our problem or just the gas pedal just to close to the brake pedal. I have been driving for 50 years and never had this problem in the past. Could you please check into it. *jb

This is with reference to the climate control panel, the knob to turn system temperature from cold to heat, with time the knob got stiff and it was very hard to turn from cold to heat, for years i have had to play with it every time i needed to use it to switch to the temperature i desired according to the weather, especially in the rain and when going from summer to winter. Finally the knob broke off and now i am no longer able to turn it making it "impossible" to defrost the windows, especially when it rains and they get foggy from the humidity or early in the morning during the cold winter months which results in unsafe driving as it impairs my vision to the point that i need to roll down my windows while i am driving which is quite dangerous. Only the rear window defrost works because it is controlled by a different knob. I have read on several websites that this incident has happened to a great amount of other mitsubishi lancer owners, with models between 2002-2005 and for the exact knob, the one for the climate control. There are 2 other knobs to control the fan and direction of air that work perfectly and no reports on being stuck or broken on those two. It seems that the temperature control knob is the only one getting stiff and breaking off with time, so it more than likely is a factory defect with the knob or the whole part. I have always been able to stop when raining and so far i have not had any accidents on account of this but i am not sure if other consumers have had the same good luck. Is mitsubishi already taking any action to fix this problem? What can we, as customers, do to get it fixed? *tr

Either way other owners of this vehicle, if this issue is widespread, should be made aware of this possible danger.
