• Recall 5390 [USA]: Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The evaporative emission control systems can apply excessive vacuum to the fuel tanks during the canister purge cycle. If excessive vacuum is applied, minor fuel tank distortion can result. A small crack could develop on the upper fuel tank surface. The "check engine" light would then illuminate and, in some cases, the vehicle driver may notice a gasoline odor.
  dealers will pressure check the vehicle's fuel tank to determine if it has cracked. If the fuel tank has cracked, it will be replaced.

  The windshield wiper motor circuit breaker electrical contacts were contaminated during assembly.

• Recall 2000063 [Canada]: Fuel supply
  On certain vehicles, if excessive vacuum is applied to the fuel tanks during the canister purge cycle, fuel tank distortion may result. After repeated exposure to the excessive vacuum, a stress crack may develop on the upper tank surface. This could result in fuel vapours or fuel escaping from the fuel tank. Correction: fuel cap will be replaced with one that is vented so as not to allow excessive fuel tank vacuum. Fuel tanks will be inspected for cracking and replaced if necessary.

  The windshield wiper motor circuit breaker electrical contacts may be contaminated with soldering flux. This contamination could interfere with the electrical circuit continuity and prevent the wiper motor from operating. Inoperative windshield wipers can contribute to reduced visibility during inclement weather which may in turn result in a vehicle crash. Correction: contaminants will be removed from the windshield wiper motor circuit breaker contacts.

• Windshield wiper failure investigation as of 19970117

  In its letter dated february 14, 1997, hyundai stated that approximately 75,000 hyundai vehicles (certain model year 1996-97 elantra, accent, sonata and tiburon models built through october 18, 1996 -- see nhtsa recall no. 97v-026 for details) will be recalled for a defect in the windshield wiper motor.Hyundai stated that the windshield wiper motor may not operate in cold weather conditions due to contamination of the motors circuit breaker electrical contacts with soldering flux during manufacturing process.Hyundai will remedy the defect by cleaning the electrical contacts to remove the contaminants.

Windshield wiper arm - location point that connects to the linkage stripped causing it in wet weather to send the wipers to go completely go out pass the end of windshield. *tr

Driver's side door handle and window handle(manual windows) broke. There was no abnormal usage--just normal wear. However, the interior plastic handles are poorly made. What if i have to exit the car quickly in an emergency???*ak

While driving at 50 mph vehicle shook heavily. Consumer was able to pull out of the road, and noticed the passenger's side wheel fell off. Dealer indicated one of the screws which held the strut fell off. *ak

When starting the ignition transmission locked up, causing the vehicle to cut off. It would be hard for the consumer to restart vehicle. Dealership/mechanic informed the consumer of the transmission failure, but was unable to resolve the problem. *ak

I own a 1996 hyundai elantra. My ex purchased this vehicle from a used car lot. We have had the car for over 3 years. On monday morning i was on my way to the dentist and noticed a very loud "loose bumping" sound..I know that probably doesn't make sense....Upon my quick return home i noticed that the driver rear tire (the entire thing) seemed to be loose and wobbly...I had a friend come and take a look to see what was wrong. After jacking the car up, with the car in the air and the tire still on the ground he thought that the strut was broken. So after further investigation, it was noticed that the strut mounting t the frame had fallen thru a rusted hole in the frame of my car. Distraught as i was, and with no help from the hyundai dealer in the louisville area, i was out of luck on how to rectify this situation. Now i am still paying for a car that i can never drive. I am wanting to know if any other hyundai owners have this problem. I mean the car is not even 10 years old...And the frame is rusting out on me.....There are no other rust spots on the car anywhere....I am just trying to understand why my car is broke and no one is able to help me fix it.*ak

Vehicle was repaired under recall #00v095000. The problem still exist as far as smelling fuel inside vehicle. Have contacted dealership and informed will repair but not free. Petersburg hyundai 804 862 1000 in va. *ak

Hood latch released while i was driving causing hood to slam back against the windshield and totally obstructing vision while on main road. Car needed to be towed and hood replaced. Auto body owner found latch, bolts, nuts were all rusted. In recently speaking with him again he mentioned that shortly after i had my hood replaced he had another hyundai elantra come in that also had rusted nuts/bolts/latch. My car is a 1996 hyundai elantra. *nlm

If they turn off vehicle it would be hard to start it back up. Dealer notified.*ak

Consumer states while driving, the engine check light came on and then the vehicle stalled out. Vehicle has been to the dealer on several occasions and the problem is reccurring. *jb oxygen sensor and coil pack were replaced. Fuel injectors were cleaned, throttle body replaced. But problem still existed until dealer found battery had dead cell. *tt

Trans. Slips. When you release gas pedal at high speeds and attempt to regain acceleration transmission does not respond immediately,there is at least a 5 sec. Pause. I am now going in to a shop for a diagnoses due to the loss of power and no reverse gear present. *nlm

Right front brake pad separated from backing pad while driving. Situation resulted in reduced braking capability when brakes where utilized. Brake pads had approx 25 - 35% life remaining.*ak

Vehicle lost all drive gears while at highway speed. Dealer service reports total transmission failure. Occured wihout warning , no noticable change in transmission fluid, and at only 69,975 miles (mostly in-town 20 mile work commute). Dealer claims no warranty coverage. *ak

As consumer was driving he had to swerve to avoid hitting another car. Vehicle went up on a curb, causing both airbags to deploy. Windshield was cracked by airbags/ front end was pushed back. Please add additional information. *ak

Both front rotors have multiple hairline cracks -never been cut with plenty of brake lining left -- all highway driving not stop and go . *ak

While driving about 50 mph and crossing a green light another vehicle was oncoming traffic trying to make a turn in front of consumer's vehicle, but consumer could not avoid crashing into it. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. *ak

Dash has been returned to dealer several times to repair. First it was said to be a speedometer cable that was replaced. The noise continues to get louder and louder. *ak

Check engine light on. Mfr claims "purge valve stuck" code indicates unrelated failure, refuses to repair.

Transmission has been rebuilt 3 times since purchase. 100,000 extended warranty is due to expire. Vehicle place in service shop for intermittent transmission failure for 4th time. I have owned this car just short of 4 years, every year i have had a major problem with this car. No safety defect listed within vehicle. *ak

In this accident i was travelling at about 45mph when i came to an intersection. The light was red and about to turn green. When the light turned green the car that was sitting at the intersection did not go. I ran directly in the back of a 1998 chevy cavilar. I hit the steering wheel and the wind sheild. The air bag didn't deploy.

Driver side interior door handle broke 3/99 could not exit through that door. New handle installed 3/99 and broke again 9/2000 could not exit through subject door. This could make emergency exit difficult. *ak

The car has been cutting off on me since purchase/going in reverse on its own. Check engine light stays on.

Consumer was in a head-on collision with an elk at 50 mph , and driver's air bag did not deploy. Dealer was contacted. *ak

I reported this information given to you to the main company in the month of august on several occasions; however, i have not received a response. In my opinion, this is totally unfair because i am making payments on an automobile that is literally falling apart. I feel that it hyundai motor finance company should have made some preparation to satisfy their customer,one who has an excellent paying history. I am very dissatified with this product and would like a better automobile, one in which i would feel comfortable driving and paying for in the remainder years. Please help! Thanks, carolyn b. Engine lights comes on,surges,misses,jerks,dies,tapping noise,loses power,these things have happened repeatedly. Other repairs 9-26-98 alternator,generator mileage 24662: 10-29-98 missing and rough idle couldn't find problem, mileage 25350; 3-22-99 plug and cable set changed again, mileage 29167; 4-12-99 replaced transmission part, mileage 29760; have talked to consumer assistant center,the dm,all i am told is to keep taking it in . Am very unhappy with this car and am afraid to drive it on the highways because it lost all power when driving on i- 65.Was towed in 2 times because of no power.They offered for me to trade it in on a new car, that would mean another 5 yr. Loan and another $50.00 a month payment.I did not feel this was a very good solution .Service dept.Has been good as trying to find the problems, but i am not happy that they have not replaced this car at no cost to me, for all the problems i have had. *ak

Engine would stall out for no reason when going only 5mph. Would jerk when in 3rd gear. Whenever vehicle reaches 30mph would jerk & vibrate. Will be taking to dealer. *ak

4 studs broke off tires.

When turning left steering wheel would get real loose; problem will occur when vehicle is going 30mph & hits bumps in the road. Would pull steering wheel hard to the right. Taking vehicle to dealer. *ak

When brakes are applied the vehicle dies due to a defective mass air flow sensor harness . The dealer has replaced this part. The dealer told owner that this part is supposed to last the life time of the vehicle. *ak

When vehicle was involved in a inter-sectional crash, traveling about 25 mph, there was no deployment of air bags. The vehicle was totalled. The crash buckled the fire wall. *ak

During frontal impact at 25 mph, the driver's and passenger's side air bags did not deploy. *ak

Turn signal lights: intermittently the turn signal lights do not work. 0n 4-17-97 while coming home turned the signa l ights on to turn and the vehicle just cut off. *ak

Electrical ignition coil: when driving car will lose power and shut completely off. Pull off the highway and restart and it will run fine . Tokk to dealer and was told the first time it was the ignition coil wire, the second time dealer said it was the alternator. *ak

The vehicle srs light come on. Dealer cannot find problem, replaced parts for airbag system but cannot determine the problem. *ak

Air in the tires keeps coming out, causing the consumer to keep stopping and putting air in the tires. Air is coming out of the tires from the metal part on the rims. *ak

Check engine light will illuminate before engine ceases to operate at any speed. After enginer shuts down, it takes 30 to 60 minutes before automobile will restart. Took automobile in for service several times. Dealer replaced switch on transmission, swith replacement did not help, engine continues to shut down at all speeds. This is very dangerous on highway and expressways. Will eventually cause a very serious accident. I have read the other consumer complaints pertaining to engine shut down problems, sounds like were having the same problem. Please do something about this problem before someone is killed or injured in an automobile accident.

Wiper switch and motor failed.

Fuel throttle and accelerator, when driving the vehicle goes into open throttle position, to stop vehicle applied the brakes real hard. *ak

Consumer tried to contact the hyundai customer assistance center for motor vehicle recall follow-up about the evaporating emission system (00v-095), but he have not been able to reach anyone to set up an appointment to have to repairs made.

The check engine and airbag light did not come on until after the recall i refuse to pay for the dealer's damage. *ak

Consumer contacted dealer in reference to recall number 00v095001, manufcturer's number not available. Dealer refused to correct the recall problem, cap was only replaced. Consumer note when driving the vehicle stalls and cut off without no prior warning. *ak

Seat belts are too small and will not stay latched. Dealer says they cant do anything. *ak

Recall remedy did not correct the problem, the windshield wipers are still inoperable. Recall number 97v026000. Check engine light is also on. *ak *ml

Consumer received nhtsa recall 00v09002 concerning fuel tanks, but never took the vehicle to the dealer for recall repairs. Six months later consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for recall repairs, and mechanic informed consumer that recall repairs had been done already. Consumer claimed that recall repairs was never performed because he never took vehicle to dealer. *ak

Windshield wipers failed during rain storm, causing poor visibility.

Transmission failed.

Reported to hyundai service of gas fumes coming from the car causing severe headaches. They located a crack in the gas tank saying that it would not be paid for by hyundai as a safety defect because of the mileage on the car.
