• Recall 41266 [USA]: This does not meet the requirements of the standard.
  Certain passenger vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 208, 'occupant crash protection.' the bilingual english/spanish removable air bag warning labels affixed to the dash and to the sunvisor do not meet the size requirements of the standard.
  mitsubishi caribbean will mail a customer notification letter containing a written description and a graphic of the bi-lingual dashboard air bag warning label. In addition, all current 2000-2004 nativa owners will also receive replacement air bag alert labels for the sun visors. This recall is expected to begin during march or april 2005. • Recall 5006 [USA]: Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. A bulge in the fuel tank caused by the manufacturing process resulted in thinning of the material during a welding operation, increasing the risk of fuel leakage.

• Recall 6210 [USA]: Fluid leakage from the cooler hoses can cause transaxle driveability problems and smoke if the oil contacts the front exhaust pipe.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. A hose was mis-manufactured and could weaken over time, which could result in leakage of the automatic transmission fluid.

  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The outer layer only of this 3-layer fuel return hose does not contain the desired ozone protection due to a processing error.

• Recall 6139 [USA]: If any of these wires become short-circuited, the interior lamps, turn signal lamps, and rear stop lamps could stop working. this would fail to warn a following driver that the vehicle is turning or braking and could lead to a crash.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The routing of the wiring harness under the right and left side of the rear seat could allow the harness to contact the body. The wires in each harness control the stop lamp circuit, back-up lamp circuit, and the turn lamp circuit.

• Recall 6221 [USA]: Prolonged wiring harness contact with the heat shield will cause the wiring insulation to wear and eventually to ground out. this could cause the engine to die-out, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The harness for the crankshaft position sensor could come in contact with a new protective shield causing a grounded circuit.

• Recall R/2000/090 [UK]: Fuel tank may crack and leak
  There is a possibility that the fuel tank may be incorrectly welded on its upper panel and baffle plate in the tank causing it to crack on the welded position. In the worst case this may cause the fuel tank to leak fuel.
  inspect the vehicles replace the fuel tanks if leaking and in cases where no abnormality is found apply a protector plate.

• Passenger door fire investigation as of 20080701

  In response to this investigation, mitsubishi motors north america (mmna) initiated a special program on july 31, 2009, to extend the warranty coverage on model year (my) 2001-2003 galant vehicle passenger side window switches to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first.Notification of this special coverage program to all registered vehicle owners is scheduled to begin in late-september 2009.Owners who have experienced a problem with the power window switch (blown fuse, intermittent operation or power window malfunction) or who spilled liquids or beverages onto the front passenger door window switch will be entitled to have the switch replaced and any related repairs performed at no charge.The agency is aware of 35 alleged front passenger door panel heat, smoke or fire incidents, including three reported minor burns or bruises.There are no reported crashes or fatalities.There are 307 warranty claims of switch malfunctions or short circuits without any reported heat, smoke or fire.Mmna inspection and analysis of fire-damaged door panels/switches found evidence of spilled liquids with high sugar content on the power window switches.Mmna claims the residue of these liquids led to a shorting/smoke/ fire condition inside the switch/door panel assembly.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.The agency will continue to monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.See document file for additional information.

The intake manifold cracked in aug 2014 so i bought one and repaired it and changed three motor and train mounts drove for two months and cracked again right behind the throttle body it started stalling when come to a stop rough idle.

I have had repeated incidents where my horn will sound during the night, and if i was using it as a warning to another driver. I have had it checked several times, and i was finally told that the airbag is probably what is causing the problem. Now my horn doesn't sound at all and this poses a safety hazard to me, my children and any other passengers as well as other drivers and pedestrians. *tr

There is a major gas in my car. The spell is there 100% of the time. When you come within 20 feet of the car...You get the overwhelming gas spell. I'm afraid to drive the car at all now. I'm a single father on full disability, with a 16 year old daughter with no mother. I can't afford the gas which doubled due to the gas leak. More importantly...I can't drive my daughter to school...Anywhere. *tr

This car has had a problem with the o2 sensors, fuel line, oil leaks, fuse and electrical shorts from the start. We have tried to fix the problems, but the repairs never lasted long. The brake line recently started leaking. Today we were in a wreck because the brakes went out. We were traveling at 35 mph and should have had time to stop. My heater stopped working. Then the heat would take at least a half an hour before coming on but would only stay warm when i was driving. Cannot keep my windows defrosted in the winter! Very unsafe! Also, my left, front headlight will go on by itself and will blink, without any key in ignition, it will still come on. I was driving 35-40 mph and a car stopped short in front of me and i slammed on my brakes and collided into the rear of their car. The hood and front end of the car was completely smashed in. The airbags failed to deploy. *tr

Heavy pressure was applied to the brake pedal but the vehicle began to move forward until he turned the steering wheel to direct the vehicle onto a curb. The vehicle was shifted into and he was able to turn it off. Upon restart the it operated as normal. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he was unable to diagnose the failure. I have a 2001 black mitsubishi galant and last year the paint start oxidizing really bad. So after i had several people advise me that the paint should not be this way on a 5 yr old car (at the time) i called the corporate office. I was told they were not aware of any issues with the paint. I called back a few months later and was told they were aware of the problem and that i should take it to the local dealer so they could determine if it was defective. After taking pictures the dealer and corporate agreed the paint job was defective. They had my car for 1.5 weeks without providing me with a car to drive. I got my car back today and the areas they painted look great, but they didn't paint the whole car so colors do not match. Within a year there is going to be a huge difference. The corporate office said they refuse to do anymore about it. Where has customer service went. I for one will never buy another mitsubishi made product at all. If you google black mitsubishi galants with bad paint jobs you will see that there are hundreds of people with this problem. It looks like the problem started with the 1999 models and continues to the 2001 models. I'm sure the 2002's will be next. I have seen at least 5 more in my area with this problem and when i am able to speak with the owners i will ensure that they are aware that it is due to a defective paint job.

I heard a cracking noise yesterday and looked up to see my dashboard cracking from the windshield all the way to the front of the dash. *tr

When battery cables are disconnected for service, the car stalls suddenly & repeatedly without warning. This continues for approximately 10-12 miles before returning to normal. Twice in 2007 when the battery cables were disconnected from the battery; once to clean acid build-up off the cables (5/07) & then again to install a new battery (10/07) , the car started right up and ran fine until out on the road and preparing to stop for a light and/or slowing down under 30 mph and then it died repeatedly. I took it back to the approved autonation dealer (power ford) as they were the ones that cleaned the cables along with my 40,000 mi service. An older mechanic said there is a sensor that has to 'reset' itself after being disconnected. He took the car out and drove it to put the miles on it, for it to stop. I have asked other people about that theory and no one seems to know about it. It is so dangerous i cannot believe it would continue for that many miles. I believe something is defective. This is the only time my car has ever given me trouble. It is very unsafe and i am filled with dread worrying about the next time something has to be checked or done involving the battery. *tr

According to the mechanic, the computer indicated that there was no driver side air bag in the vehicle. The dealer stated that the owner was responsible for having the air bag replaced. They also stated that if the vehicle failed inspection, they would have given her a refund or made the repair. The srs light will dim when the air bag is replaced. The contact stated that the horn will not work while the srs light is illuminated. She received a carfax report prior to purchasing the vehicle, which indicated that the vehicle was not involved in any crashes. She also stated that the trunk does not open from the passenger compartment. The fuel system and powertrain were unavailable. The vin was invalid. The failure mileage was 83,305 and current mileage was 91,829.

She attempted to accelerate, but the vehicle stalled and shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that a transmission kit was needed. The contact did not notice any differences beforehand. The current mileage was 94,000 and failure mileage was 73,000.

The contact stated that the horn sounded off sporadically without warning. The dealer determined that the airbags needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the airbags. However, the horn continued to beep. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure, and informed the contact they were unable to duplicate the problem. Customer states was involved in accident on 3/2 when car rolled back into front bumper. Well i have a black 2001 mitsubishi galant gtz. Within the past year i discovered that the top of my hood started getting white spots. After 10 months they small spots spreaded into white blobs on my hood. I soon found out that it was chalking do to a bad clear coat on the vehical. After doing a little research i found very quickly that many friends, coworkers and family were having the exact problem between the model years of 1998 - 2002. This was not only my state it was mutiple places so i knew it wasn't the weather. What can i do to institute a recall on the paint job? *nm

My car was struck at a 45 degree angle on the passenger side door by a ford explorer traveling at approximately 60 mph. None of the airbags deployed and i was thrown around the vehicle as i was not restrained at the time (i had returned to the car to get information from the glove compartment). The car was declared a total loss as a result of the impact and i suffered injuries to my neck, arm, and leg. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at various speeds there was a noise from the rear passenger underside of the vehicle. It was taken to the dealer who replaced the trailing arm bushings. In three years the problem reoccurred and the trailing arm bushings were replaced again.

An independent repair shop determined the crank shaft sensor either needed to be replaced or tightened. There is a nhtsa recall, # 00v299001, regarding the engine; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

My 2001 mitsubishi galant has been leaking very bad on both the driver and passanger side ever since i got it. I not only have to fold my pant legs when i ride in my car but it is also growing mold, which can't be healthy. It also has never had good exterior lighting. My headlights always seem dim and they point upward rather than at the road where they belong. *tr

In december 2005 the car started experiencing problems with a drop in power between 10 and 20 miles per hour. The dealer diagnosed is as shift surge and said the transmission had a leak, resulting in low fluid that overheated the transmission and caused internal damage. The surge occurred on and off for just a week. Now they say we have to replace the transmission and quote of $2,000 plus for a rebuilt transmission. They stated that if we had taken the car to them the first sign of shifting, they might have been able to fix it. A recall was issued for this car for transmission fluid leaks. I had taken this car to the same dealer in october no one mentioned any recalls. It is difficult to understand how a transmission needs to be replaced within four years. How can i determine if the previous owner actually had the work done that was necessary per the recall? If it had not been done, what liability does the dealer regarding this? The dealer said nothing about this. I noticed that there was a service bulletin issued in 2004 for shift surge. This is exactly the result of this internal damage. If the dealership received this in 2004, what is their obligation to make sure the cars have been appropriately served per the bulletin? May i see the service bulletin for this particular issue? The dealership replaced the fuel pressure regulator, the sensor fuel vapor, the egr valve, and the solenoid valve. Driving at 30 miles an hour on city street. Prepared to stop at stop light. The brakes did not respond, and the vehicle accelerated. The driver lost control of the vehicle within seconds was steered to the curb flipped and crashed on the roof of the vehicle. The vehicle was still racing after the vehicle crashed. The vehicle was totaled. Driver and passeger were taken to the hospital and released with cuts and bumps.

We purchased a new 2001 mitsubishi galant in december 2001. It is black. The car is now 3.5 year sold and the paint is turning white. It started to have a problem 3 months after purchase when the clear coat started to crack. They re-painted the roof. Now is is over the mileage for coverage under the warranty. The paint is fading so fast and turning white. Mitsubishi is giving us the run around. We have even contacted corporate and they push us off on someone regional that continues to give us the run around. They have had two outside professionals look at it, and they both say the paint is definitely failing way before it should. That it is defective. This car has had multiple problems since we bought it, has been in the shop over 35 days.

Air conditioner leaks inside the car on drivers side and in front and behind drivers seat floor mats literally drips with water and floor is soaking wet. We purchased the car with a bumper to bumper 100,000 mile extended warranty from hampton mitsubishi 4895 johnston st lafayette, la 70503. They told us this problem is not covered by extended warranty. I am so frustrated and feel so deceived and have vowed to never purchase another mitsubishi car and will not recommend misubishi cars to anyone. *jb

Leaking a/c evaporator into floorboard of drivers and passenger side. Used a dependable local mechanic to work on the problem. The leaking evaporator has been cleared twice by the mechanics and after spending over $600.00 the problem is yet to be resolved. Mitsubishi corporate has yet to recall this but the more you research the more you understand that this is not an uncommon occurrence. The 2001 galant has a significant backgound of documentation from this ongoing problem and mitsubishi will not stand behind there product while knowing there is a major problem. There is a rattling noise coming from under my car (2001 mitsubishi galant). This is a noise that i have never heard before. So i took the car to two different mechanics and was told that the noise is due to a defective suspension rack. My car is only 4 years old and only has 44,500 miles on it. This is a manufacturing defect. I called the mitsubishi dealership in town and was told that the warranty had expired and that i was out of luck. But this is a major repair (the part is expensive, about $750) and it it not due to wear and tear. A suspension rack is not supposed to break on a 2001 car with only 44,500 miles. Problem #1) purchased used vehicle from private seller. The driver side door/window has rattling sound during driving, causing unpleasant driving experience and concern for safety. During pre-purchase inspections, dealership(s) did not had clear diagnostic explanation regarding cause and/or solution. Problem #2) rear passenger right side door, when door was shut, with the child safe lock unlocked, passenger is unable to open door from inside. Driver must open passenger door for passenger on the right, problem occur often on (average 8 out of 10 times). Problem was not discovered by dealership during pre-purchase inspection. Problem #3 & #4) moonroof will not shut during highway driving (above 40 mph) from tilted position. Driver have to open moonroof (press button toward rear side of vehicle) in order to open moonroof, then close moonroof (press button toward front side of vehicle) to close moonroof completely. Also, occasionally, when closing moonroof (from tilted position), moonroof does not close entirely, leaving an inch of the moonroof tilted (average 1 out of 5 times). *jb

When she bought the car she was having several problems with the vehicle, and the dealer really didn't' want' to help her with any of her problems. She had an accident, she was not sure what happened with the vehicle, but she said check engine light kept coming on, and she had a tire and oil change. She lost all control of vehicle. She tried hitting the brakes and she didn't have any brakes. Finally the car landed. The dealer just told her that she hit something, but she didn't hit anything. About a month before the accident she took the vehicle in for a tire pressure inspection. The vehicle, while she was driving before the accident, the car dropped to the passenger side. 2001 galant es developed problems with the transmission.*mr the automatic transmission began slipping in and out of gear, which resulted in the consumer having the vehicle towed. The consumer had to take the vehicle back to dealer on several occasions because of the recurring transmission problem. It was determined the transmission needed to be replaced under the manufacturers warranty. The consumer stated the replacement transmission is now slipping, however the dealer could not duplicate the problem. The engine light illuminated and once again it was determined to be the transmission, even though the dealer claimed they could not duplicate the problem. The transmission was replaced for the second time. On june 2, 2005 the transmission began slipping in and out of gear again and the consumer noticed white smoke emitting from the tail pipe, moments later the vehicle was on fire. After inspecting the vehicle, it was determined there was a transmission fluid leak from a line which led from the transmission to the lower part of the radiator and was used as a cooler line. *jb

My airconditioning system appears to have some type of defect. Three times in the last year, which is how long i have had the car, the airconditioning has become clogged and the pan fills so that when i turn a corner the water from the pan floods the passenger side of the car. I have had the clog removed twice, but have been told that there is a defect in the way this is made. It should not do this.

The exhaust pipe started making a loud noise while driving. Vehicle was taken to a repair shop. Dealer indicated a crack had developed in the exhaust pipe. Also this was a common practice with these vehicles, and it may be a defect in this part. *ak

While trying to get out of a convenient store parking lot, i experienced one of the most unusual and dramatic situations of my life!!! As i started my car and put the automatic gear on reverse with my foot on the brake, the car just took off on a very high speed making tire marks on the parking lot and the car stopped from the gas pump area. When i tried to bring the car back to the parking space to see and evaluate the situation, as soon as i put the car in the drive position it just took off again towards the convenient store with this huge engine noise and the brake would not work to stop the high speed engine! The vehicle's tires made a very strong and lasting image on the parking brick and went over it to crash in to the store! The third time i tried to get out of the mess and put the car in reverse and again it went back ward charging towards the gas pumps area with strong engine high performance noise. I have replaced the pads and turned the rotors on a 2001 mitsubishi galant de to correct the problem with the car shimmying and poor braking ability. This corrected the problem for only 5,000 miles. I can see that i am going to have to replace or turn the rotors again and possibly replace the brakes. I have a friend who is having the exact same problem with his 2001 mitsubishi galant es. I was sitting in an intersection waiting to turn left. As i began to turn a pickup truck ran the light and hit me head on at approx 45 mph. None of my 4 airbags deployed -- driver front & side airbags nor the passenger front & side airbags. The front end was completely smashed up. I was in a serious accident on march 17 2003. My car was totaled in the accident. The entire front of the car was caved in. The problem was, the air bags did not deploy in the accident like they were supposed to. The type of vehicle was a 2001 mitsubishi galant es. I was going approximately 45 miles per hour. The shuttle bus that hit me pulled out in front of me and we collided. I am really upset but thank god i had my seat belt on. Complaint: repeated problems with front brakes. Rotors have needed to be resurfaced several times and now are unable to be resurfaced again and need to be replaced. Continuous vibration of brake pedal and in steering wheel while braking. At times, entire car feels like it is shaking (passengers notice the vibrations through their feet on the floorboard). Was involved in an accident in november of 2002 where i felt that if the brakes were operating as they should be, i would have been able to stop in time. I had issues with my driver side seat for years and currently still an issue. I never realized this was a recall issue. I had a number of issue/problems with my vehicle and always took my car to the mitsubitshi dealer and they too never mentioned any recall regarding driver side seat. The driver's seat is not properly secure the seat and could increase the risk of driver injury in an accident.

Front brake rotors become warped every 5,000 to 8,000...This is the third set of rotors i have gone through since 2002. There is heavy vibration in the steering wheel when braking. I constantly have to keep having the rotors cut. Mitsubishi said this is "normal".

The brake system causes vibration in the steering wheel and at the last several rotations of wheels a tremendous clunking occures it seems in the rear end of the vehicle. On hills the brakes tend to release and the car rolls forward several inches.*ak

Brake problems since the beginning. Vibration when braking any speed, dealer couldn't locate the problem and pads where fine. Withen a few months i replaced the brake pads and had the rotors turned, i still have the vibration problem. After backing out of parking space i put the vehicle in drive and it started racing on its own i applied brakes but it just wouldn't stop ended up hitting 2 other vehicles.*ak

Vehicle experienced fire in the engine compartment, claim 09-5041-237. *slc

The insured stated that the vehicle caught on fire.*jb(claim#09-5041-237)

The brakes on my car have been giving problems ever since i bought the car. I change the front brakes at the request of the dealers and paid almost $300. The brakes still give problem, they brake very slowly, forever squeeking and give off a dark fibre to the rim of the car.*ak

While traveling at about 65 mph consumer's vehicle hit another vehicle head-on on drivers side. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Consumer and passenger were injured. Consumer felt if airbags had deployed some of the injuries would not have been so bad.*ak

Vehicle is just 9 months old, and was told that vehicle needed rotor turning. Consumer had been complaining about handling of vehicle since purchasing it in november, 2000. *ak

Right rear tire hit hole or bump in parking. Activated anti-lock braking for first time since buying car in 2001. Lost steering control at same time. Couldn't turn it. Stopped before entering highway. Put car in park; then drive and slowly took off. Steering returned to normal. Dangerous situation if i was in traffic or meeting another vehicle while attempting to exit parking lock. Faint odor of fuel. No obvious leak on ground. *tr

Vehicle seriously vibrates when accelerating. Also, transmission is slipping when shifting from first to second gear. Dealership examined vehicle, and found drops of water in transmission fluid. Manufacturer stated that driven in rain and flooding caused water to enter transmission. Consumer indicated that ehicle was parked , and was not subject to wet conditions during recent flooding. Please provide any additional information/attachments. *ak

Vehicle was taken to the dealer for a leak. Dealer stated it was coming from transmission. Dealer corrected the problem, and within 15 minutes, consumer pulled over/ got out, and watched vehicle catch on fire. Vehicle was totalled. Please provide any further information. *ak

While driving, vehicle began sputtering, consumer pulled over to see flames and smoke, there was a recall, C0104c, regarding sparking in the engine which could cause a fire, also, transmission cooler line was found defective, the fires cause is unknown. Ohio traffic crash report. *slc

There has been excessive steering wheel vibration when breaking.

Front end suspension is vibrating and pulsating when consumer is driving vehicle. This can happen at any time. Contacted dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything.*ak

Driver's seatbelt became detached from side of vehicle, was replaced under warranty. *ak

Airbag light is on all the time, not taken to dealer yet.*ak

While driving on the highway vehicle just stopped, was caused by a defect in transmission *ak

While pulling out of a parking space and upon shifting gear into drive engine suddenly accelerated and caused vehicle to hit a wall. Dealer / manufacturer were not contacted at this time. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter. *ak

Did not go into or stay in park. *ak

I ran into a center divider onthe highway and my airbags didn't deploy and seatbelt did not lock.Crash caused by loss of vehicle control. *ak

Recall 00v299001/crankshaft position sensor. Consumer has been trying to schedule appointment to have vehicle repaired under recall. First dealership denied knowledge of recall. Currently, no one at dealership is responding to consumer's letters and telephone calls. Point of contact at dealer is rick weber. *ak

Consumer states after lengthy highway driving and when braking feels some pulsation in brake pedal and steering wheel shimmies during braking. Vibration can also be felt in passenger seatback. Dealer found runout of rotors and tires were balanced. However problem still exist. *tt

Srs light stayed on continuously while car was in motion. The dealer replaced the seat backs, since they claimed that the side air bags were the problem. The light has not come on since the repair. Also, the steering wheel air bag cover did not properly fit. This unit was also replaced. This repair also appears to be acceptable. As for the windshield, it is leaking water into the interior. The dealer already made two attempts to fix this problem. The first attempt included resealing the windshield, and the second attempt was an adjustment to the moonroof. They claimed that both of these fixes would work, but i'm still finding water leaking into the interior. The leak has remained at the same location, about 4-6 inches left of center.*ak

Airbag light stays illuminated while vehicle is in motion. Has been repaired under recall; however, problem still exists.*ak

While driving 35 mph was involved in a head on collision. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Dealer has been notified.*ak

The front of vehicle hit the side of another vehicle and the air bags did not deploy. Mr scc *jb

Consumer noticed after depressing the brakes a grinding noise coming from front and rear of vehicle. Technician replaced rotors and pads.*ak

While driving consumer heard a loud noise coming from the vehicle. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic informed consumer that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced due to a blowout. *ak
