  • Recall 2019523 [Canada]: Airbag
Issue: on certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety risk: if the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective action: owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the passenger-front airbag inflator or airbag module replaced. Note: the canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Additional note: vehicles may have had the original front passenger airbag inflator replaced as a "like-for-like" replacement under recall 2016-103 (toyota recall #'s src 241 & src 242) as a temporary remedy while evaluating a permanent remedy. These vehicles will receive the permanent remedy passenger airbag assembly under this recall.

  • Recall 2018699 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator or airbag assembly. Note: canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Vehicles may have had the original front passenger airbag inflator replaced as a “like-for-like” replacement under recall 2013-133 (toyota recall #'s ssc 193/241 & ssc 194/242) as a temporary remedy while evaluating a permanent remedy. These vehicles will receive the permanent remedy passenger airbag assembly under this recall.

  • Recall 2016103 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger (frontal) airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: this recall supersedes recalls 2013113, 2014224, 2015197 and 2015269. Correction: all vehicles having not received a replacement inflator as part of the previous recall will now have a replacement inflator installed by dealers. For matrix model vehicles, dealers may replace the front passenger airbag assembly with one equipped with a newly specified inflator.

  • Recall 2015269 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger (frontal) airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: this recall is superseded by recall 2016103. Please see recall 2016103 for more information. Click here for more information

  • Recall 2005151 [Canada]: Suspension
On certain vehicles, a manufacturing issue with the front lower ball joint could result in premature wear. If the vehicle is operated for an extended period of time in this condition, the ball joint may eventually experience excessive wear and looseness, resulting in increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering and noise in the front suspension. In extreme cases, when the driver continues to operate the vehicle in this condition, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front lower ball joints.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20210917

From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede ea15-001, which remains open.

  • Yaw rate sensor malfunction investigation as of 20160614

On june 14, 2016, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation pe16-006 to investigate 135 complaints alleging incidents of yaw rate sensor malfunctions resulting in unexpected vehicle stability control (vsc) activations and steering pull while driving in model year (my) 2001-2002 toyota sequoia vehicles.Odi identified a total of 958 incidents in complaints provided by toyota or submitted to odi by consumers.Odi conducted the following work to assess the alleged defect in the subject vehicles: 1) evaluated the design of the subject yaw rate sensor; 2) initiated vehicle testing and instrumentation; 3) performed failure analysis on subject components collected from the field; 4) analyzed field data for evidence of system faults; and 5) reviewed the performance of the subject system in fault simulations testing conducted by toyota.Odi review indicated that an overwhelming majority of incidents are related to flashing vsc slip indicators on the instrument panel accompanied by warning buzzers and grinding noise or vibration caused by pulsed brake application to one of the front wheels.Yaw rate sensor malfunctions resulting in vsc brake applications is accompanied by a brief duration of longitudinal deceleration with minimal changes in vehicle speed and will not result in abrupt lane change or loss of vehicle control due to steering controllability. This preliminary evaluation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding that a safety related defect does not exist. For additional information, see the closing resume appendix and the investigation file for pe16-006.

  • Air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20150224

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe14-016 in june 2014 based on six inflator rupture incidents involving consumer owned vehicles produced by five vehicle manufacturers. All six vehicles were operated in florida or puerto rico at the time of the rupture and for the majority of their service life, and were equipped with inflators produced by takata, a tier-one supplier of automotive air bag systems.During the course of pe14-016, odi determined that five additional vehicle manufacturers used inflators of a similar design and vintage also supplied by takata. No evidence of field failures was found in vehicles produced by these five additional manufacturers.Nonetheless, at odis insistence, all 10 vehicle manufacturers initiated a regional recall within approximately two weeks of the opening of the investigation. The regions recalled initially included florida, puerto rico, hawaii, and the u.S. Virgin islands, areas with high absolute humidity and climatic conditions believed to be a significant factor in the inflator ruptures. As part of the recall actions, inflators removed from remedied vehicles are to be returned to takata for testing.Takatas initial test results on passenger inflators from remedied vehicles indicated a much higher than anticipated rupture frequency for inflators returned from florida.Accordingly odi requested all 10 manufacturers expand the regional recalls for passenger inflators to include other geographic areas where high absolute humidity conditions exist, including the gulf states and other coastal areas.Takatas testing of the passenger inflators to date continues to indicate this geographic area as having the highest risk, with no ruptures occurring from inflators returned from outside the expanded recall regions.During pe14-016 four additional passenger inflator field events occurred, all in vehicles from the same expanded geographic region. Also during pe14-016 four additional driver inflator field events occurred including two in vehicles from regions not known for high absolute humidity, specifically california and north carolina.Accordingly, odi requested all five of the affected vehicle manufacturers currently using the subject takata driver inflators expand to nationwide recalls.Significantly, neither of the affected vehicle manufacturers or takata provided any explanation to account for these two driver air bag inflator ruptures outside the area of high absolute humidity.Takata testing of returned driver inflators indicates a lower rupture frequency as compared to passenger inflator testing. All test ruptures reported by takata to date have occurred on inflators returned from high absolute humidity areas. The investigation now includes all manufacturers and vehicles known to be affected at this time.Odis investigation will focus on, among other things, root cause analysis, other potential defect consequences, identification of affected vehicles scope, and adequacy of the remedy. The five odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification numbers: 10537899, 10568848, 10585224, 10605877, 10651492

While driving around 50 mph, the traction control and vsc warning lights illuminated and the brakes started locking up, which made me seem like the traction control kicked in. The front wheels started seizing and the vehicle started jerking in middle of the highway. I had to pull over and have a cousin pick up my parents that were riding in the car and had to restart the vehicle. I was able to drive it home with the problem happening again right as i was taking my exit to my home.

The left rear frame broke away from rear sway bar. I was just leaving my house when i heard a thunk. I noticed the problem when i turned onto the faster road as i accelerated the whole backend moved right, pushing the front end left (into oncoming traffic). Letting up on the accelerator cased the reverse to happen, the back end swung left and the front turned right. So, glad it happened slower streets and not the highway. There was a limited service recall on this model to coat with a rust proofing paint and we had the service done in 2012. This failure would have probably killed someone if it had happened on the freeway or cloverleaf. These vehicles should be either repaired by toyota or off the road.

Grinding noise, beeping, warning lights flashing, difficulty steering, difficulty braking, clunking when braking, vsc and abs lights on. Very scary. I was driving approximately 50 mph. It also happened when my daughter was driving it. Very intermittent. I was going straight, no turning, no bumps in the road. So random. I have researched the much on youtube and the internet and there are many others who have experienced this scary situation. I am afraid to drive the vehicle and it is a major safety hazard and must be fixed! I heard they recalled the 2003's but not the 2002's but they have the same parts. I will send pictures of others who have similar complaints. If you go to the website i sent you will find many others who have experienced the same thing. I am sending only a sample. Please do something. Serious safety hazard, whatever the problem is! I have not driven it much since it happened. I have been very distracted since my boyfriend passed away. I did call the local toyota dealer after it first happened and also the national number for toyota and was told there is no recall. Yet! Go to carproblemzoo.Com and input "brake grinding noise of toyota sequoia abs and vsc. I tried to upload docs but they were the wrong format.

As i drive down a highway, gravel road, driveway, street, anywhere, going slow or the speed limit, all of a sudden my vsc light and traction control light on the dash will start flashing accompanied by an alarm in the dash, causing the car to momentarily feel almost as if its hydroplaning. Then all of a sudden it will go back to normal but the lights will stay on. Sometimes it does it 2-3 times each time the car is turned on. It has also been doing it when i come to a complete stop, then go to take off again it will flash the lights and make a weird grinding noise for about 5-10 secs not letting the car move at all. Then it will all of a sudden start moving again. I have 7 kids that ride with me daily and i find this extremely scary. It's been happening for 6/01/2020 to now/present/daily/

When i start the vehicle the trac off and vsc trac light is illuminated on the dash. After driving a short time the vehicle beeps and goes into a skip and breaks to one side. It corrects itself in a second. Sometimes it beeps and no skid. This started a year ago. Frequency was a few times a year then. Now it happens several times a week. I believe toyota addressed the issue on 2003's, but not 2002's. Most of time the vehicle is on city streets when this happens and it is more likely to happen after driving a few minutes. It always happens when i am driving straight.

On multiple occasions recently while driving on the highway in a straight line manner, the rear brakes either the left or right have automatically engaged causing my sequioa to jerk to the left or right while at highway speed. My vehicle jerks violently, a buzzer sounds, and the vsc and trac lights illuminate and remain illuminated. If those lights are illuminated it no longer does this; however, if the lights are not illuminated it's a coin flip whether being jerked to the left or right while driving in a straight line on the highway. Toyota dealership doesn't know what problem is. Apparently it could be a dozen different things and they have to start replacing each one at a time to see if the problem goes away. To replace everything is several thousand dollars, probably more than the book value of the vehicle.

Just bought a used 2002 toyota sequoia and quickly found that i can not pull out into heavy traffic without plenty of gap in said traffic.I had unhooked the battery to do some work on it and now it will hesitate for 1.5 to 3 seconds when you ease from a stop.I have seen on other sites that it is called the hesitation of death.I notice on the dash the (car with the slipping) light comes on and there are some relay noises under the dash.I don't see the vsc light come on or the abs light come on.I did call my local toyota dealership to explain my experince and they claim to have never heard of this issue. They told me just to drive it and it should within a few days it should relearn itself.I told them i just drove a 650 mile trip with it and its been a week or two since i unhooed the battery with no change. She simply just wished me luck and that was it.As a update i changed the front brake calipers in witch lowered the brake fluid level in the master cylnder witch turned on all the vsc warning lights and brake light and the hesitation went away as long as the lights were on.Unfortuntaly i turned it off and filled the brake fluid to max level and the hesitation came right back and the vsc warning lights went off.Nothing to indicate or give a direction to a repair.I see the reports about the 2003 sequioa having a recall but not the 2002.If they are the same part numbers i think for all safty factors on both years they shoud be honering the 2002 under a safty recall. Not really sure what to do at this point.Do i sell it,trade it in, the dearship didnt offer any true help or even mention the recall on the 2003 sequioa. They were not to forth coming with info on this problem that seems to be well known on a toyota forum page.

During driving on freeway with clean dry road car has beeping alarm on, vsc traction light on and svc lights lit up while the car shakes line the brake is on by itself for short period (3 seconds). Then both warning light vsc and off and vsc track light is on still until the engine is turned off an hour afterward. The next day i drove the car slowly on a local street after picking up my son after school, the brake started shaking the car and vsc off and vsc track lights are on again. I drive the car with caution everytime after that but the occurance doesn't happen every time nor being recreate. It happened every few thousand miles unexpectedly. This is very dangerous . I would like to find a fix by the manufacturer and have them pay for it. It seems like this is a problem for many same cars .

The first indication that something was wrong was the first week of september 2019. I was driving down a county road when the lights indicator lights for the trac and vsc started flashing and beeping when i drove over some bumps. The lights would not go off even when pressing trac off. I turned off the car and restarted it and the lights were off but only for about 15 minutes into my drive. I took it to the toyota dealership and the agent said he did not know anything about the system and i would have to bring it back for diagnostics. That night i was getting ready to go over a rather large bridge when all of the sudden the car jerked twice to the right with the second event pulling me off the road. It was extremely frightening and terrified us all. Thank god it did not happen on the bridge or under other circumstances. The vsc and trac lights came on at approximately the same time as they had been off. I contacted toyota corporate and essentially they said that the vehicle was not under warranty. This is an extremely dangerous situation. Thankfully i am a experienced driver but if it would have been one of my kids, i don't know if the outcome would have been the same. The local toyota dealership has been of no help. The car is sitting in my drive. I implore you to further investigate this failure of the system before someone gets killed.

Besides being nerve wracking, it is a potentially hazardous problem, especially in snow and ice, that should qualify for a recall.

After driving roughly 40 minutes on a straight dry highway at a constant 70 mph, my vsc off and trac off lights suddenly came on for no reason, accompanied by a loud high-pitched alarm. The steering felt like it was dragging, was grinding, and pulled to the right. Felt like something was breaking apart. Very scary since i was in the left lane with no shoulder. I decreased my speed to about 60 and moved to the right hand lane. After several seconds, the alarm and grinding/dragging stopped just as mysteriously as it started before i'd even gotten to an exit. The lights stayed lit. Before i used the vehicle again, i inflated the tires from 32.5 to 35 psia, just in case that might have contributed. The next day, i drove on the highway for 40 minutes with no problem, but on the way back home, the same thing recurred after about 20 minutes, again at highway speeds on a straight section of dry road. This time the dragging and grinding was worse and the alarm lasted much longer. Again, it mysteriously stopped as i was preparing to exit the highway. Searching similar anecdotes seems to imply a known failure of the yaw sensor. That sensor has triggered the lights to come on from time to time ever since 2002, but it never caused the loud alarm or struggle to steer the vehicle before. This should definitely be a recall item. I think i'm going to have to disable the variable speed control and traction control features of the vehicle by removing the fuse just so i can keep driving it.

NoNoN NoneNone20190703

I didn't realize what the lights meant being on when i bought it until i was attempting to drive 4hrs away and suddenly the steering started veering off to the other lane and swerving. I could not drive past 40mph on the interstate the rest of the way and almost crashed into other vehicles and off the side of the road. When you switch lanes the vehicle pulls you too far and it is very unsafe to drive especially with kids. I had to break the abs fuse to get back home and even then it still veers off when trying to switch lanes and i can't go past 60 or so. I don't see how there are this many complaints and many accidents and almost accidents to not have everything associated with this malfunction to be considered not dangerous enough for a recall. I'm thankful my kids were not with me during that trip.

I recently went to my local toyota dealership for radiator and exhaust system evaluation and possible repairs and was by advised that the frame on the driver's side of the vehicle has major rust perforation problems. I was told that the degree of rust thru was significant and may create a safety hazard. A friend later advised that there have been widespread reports of this issue with older sequoias. I researched and found that a recall had been issued for some models a few years ago. I don't recall receiving a recall notice, but in reviewing my service records i see that on april 23, 2013 my frame was inspected based on the following service notation: "cod recall - open recall frame inspection and spare tire functional and visual check - replaced spare tire carrier - removed rust - cleaned frame with no rust perforation found - crc application by outside shop." i have owned the vehicle since 2003 and have had it serviced at the same dealership for 15 years, usually going there several times a year for maintenance, oil changes, etc. No mention of any rust problems or that this could be a major issue. Not sure what to do now; would like to keep my car, but want it repaired.

I have a 2002 toyota sequoia limited, with 111,000 miles on it. Twice july 13 and july 21 all of the dash lights for (vsc, traction control, anti-lock brakes, parking brake) lights come on and stay on. It has happen at low driving speeds (approx. 20-30 mph), there was some slight braking or pushing feeling of the vehicles control. As i can see by many post regarding the problem with toyota sequoia's of the same year and model as mine in many of the complaints filed with nhsta. In researching the problem, it appears to be a driving safety issue if it occurs at higher speeds, luckily mine happened at low speeds. If toyota is aware of this problem and has done recalls for the skid control ecu/yaw rate sensor on the 2003 toyota sequoia's, why not a recall on the 2002 sequoias which seem to have the same problem? Can my sequoia still be driven? Is it safe for my family at higher speeds? It appears even toyota dealerships can't get this problem fixed most times or are charging thousands of dollars to fix it. Many with 2 or 3 different service calls to get it done correctly. How can this be, when this skid control ecu problem has been documented many many times. More than should be allowed. It is a safety issue for me and my family, and i am putting toyota on notice if something should happen to me or anyone in my 2002 toyota sequoia due to this documented issue.

Every time i drive my 2002 toyota sequoia within 10min on average the trac off/vsc warning sounds come on and the car violently shakes and the brakes seem to lock up. It usually starts at speeds from 25 to 40mph and sometimes even on the highway at 65mph, very dangerous and scary. I have to stop the vehicle and shut it off and restart it for the signs to go off and for the traction control to stop. This doesn't resolve the issue since it just starts again when i start the car back up and drive. Its gotten to the point where its not safe to drive the vehicle especially at long distances. The vehicles cruise control was off going straight on a smooth city streets or highway while in motion.

Takata recall we have owned our sequioa since 12/13/2001, we bought it brand new. When we 1st bought it the airbag light came on immediately and bill dube of dover nh replaced something and fixed it. I have had many complaints with my vehicle and returned to the dealership many times thru out the years. I have had multiple issues with vsc traction control starting in 2002 lights would come on and go out, air bag light comes on when there is high humidity and when using air conditioning, my alloy wheels have been disgusting since 2004. I have a extensive repair history with bill dube dealership they never addressed issues as once lights on dash turn off there is no history. In 2006 my lights on dash came on i brought it to toyota of portsmouth nh as i was almost at 100000. Miles. They could not look at vehicle due to warranty. I drove to bill dube and they refused to see me that day or document that lights were on so they could fix it. Once my odometer hit 100000 warranty was null and void. I was extremely upset called multiple times to toyota corporation and appeared to get same jerk who refused to help and gave me the run around. We have owned our sequioa for 18 1/2 years. I love my car it has approx 445000 miles and would appreciate assistance. My vsc is constantly on now along with the abs light. The air bag only comes on when there is high humidity and i am driving. When we bought the sequioa the salesman actually stated the sequioa had a hard drive to retain light history. I also have been concerned with my frame which was replaced in 2012. I have return to portsmouth toyota where work was down a few times. My vehicle appears crooked and not aligned they think i am crazy. I practically live in my vehicle i work in hospice so i am very aware of my vehicles look and condition. I would appreciate your assistance with my vehicle, i would like make it to 500000.

We have had the vsc/trac flashing warning lights come on, with a grinding noise and beeping alarms as we drive the vehicle on the road and/or on the freeway. The steering wheel vibrates and the vehicle slows down. Incident lasts approximately 10-20 seconds. Once it stops the vsc/trac light comes on until you stop driving. This occurs randomly when we are driving the vehicle on the road or on the freeway. We never know when it will happen when driving the vehicle. We are no longer driving the vehicle on long distance road trips or on the highway because we are afraid that we will get into an accident. We feel it is a health and safety issue that toyota must address immediately.

Dealership wants approximately $2,000 to replace the skid control ecu.

Severe premature frame rust including the dislodge of spare tire and carrier, repaired periodically at high cost to the vehicle owner. Frames in question were manufactured with defect in corrosion resistant properties that is well known and documented. Ntsb has been aware of this condition on various toyota trucks for at least 10 years. Class action lawsuit has been approved for limited model years vehicles but leaves many effected out of the class. Condition effects model year 2000 and up all tundra, tacoma, sequioa and 4runner vehicles. Toyota has been allowed to deny responsibility by implementing a limited service campaign that has long since expired on these faulty vehicles. This condition should have been a recall of all vehicles manufactured with these frames as so many continue to become unsafe over time with no resolution due to expiration of the "limited service campaign." condition also causes failure of electronic stability control leading to temporary loss of vehicle control which is very common on these vehicles and has happened to me many times.

While driving 75mph on the interstate the front right ball joint failed (4 days after a safety inspection done at the toyota dealership). The tire folded under the car and we nearly hit the median and then the car to our right. We managed to get the car to the side of the road. When driving on normal (safe and dry) road conditions, the vsa and trac control elements of the vehicle engaged and nearly caused me to crash. Braking was severely inhibited (had to pump brakes to get them to work) and steering was jolted to the right/affected nearly causing an inadvertent lane change at highway speeds (65 miles per hour). Was assessed by toyota and ruled to be a faulty steering column sensor and yaw rate sensor which is an astronomically expensive repair. My family is not safe in this vehicle due to the defect. Please do something! This should be a recall!

In july, '17 i was told the frame of the vehicle has penetrating rust. This was not supposed to happen since toyota put corrosion resistant compound on it during the service campaign. The vehicle was inspected for rust in early june/ late may and i was told there were no penetrating rust areas. In june and july i put over $2,000 in repairs into this vehicle as i planned to drive it for several more years. I have since learned that applying the crc is a band-aid and will not stop rust once it has started. I believe toyota did not address this limited service campaign properly. I believe all vehicles in this campaign should have had total frame replacement rather than relying on visual inspection and using a "band-aid" approach.

I brought my 2002 toyota sequoia to my mechanic for an issue and he told me that my vehicle has severe rust on the frame and is not safe to drive. I called toyota and was told that they can not help me. My mechanic said that toyotas have a problem with this issue and his 2005 tacoma was repaired through a class action suit. I am terribly disappointed that toyota will allow their customers to drive an unsafe vehicle. I have been researching on line and have found that indeed this is a problem. I hope that enough people complain so that and toyota is forced to fix this problem before someone gets seriously injured.

About a month ago i was driving on the highway at about 60mph and all of a sudden my vehicle began to jerk erraticly, became hard to control steering and braking, seemed to be braking on its on, it made a very loud grinding noise and some sort of alarm starting beeping and my vsc lights and traction control lught starting flashing. This lasted about 3 minutes and continues to happen sporadically every 2 to 3 days. There is no cause and no rhythm or reason for this to happen. I am always on a seemingly flat smooth surface moving straight ahead at a moderately high rate of speed between 50 and 70mph..

My father and i were leaving frys electronics on friday may 19, 2017. As we turned from the fry's parking lot to head on the 60 fwy all of a sudden the vsc started beeping and just as we we picking up speed(50mph) the truck started to swerve while at the same time a grinding sound went off my father pushed the vsc off switch but did not have any effect on what was happening. When the beeping had stopped both vsc off and vsc lights had stayed on and the vehicle seemed to be running ok and ever since that day whenever we use the sequoia the lights come on and stay on during the trip on occasions it doesn't turn on after about 5 mins the beeping goes on and vehicle engine immediately slows and grinding sound goes on and causes vehicle to swerve and my father is a bit elderly so as a son i am putting in this complaint in hopes of some assistance in repairs this malfunction. My parents are retired and do not have an good income, is there any possible way toyota can fix this malfunction which seems to be quite a problem amoungst sequoia owners thank you for your time and patience i will await a response thank you. 2002 toyota sequoia mfg. August 2002 has not had a recall for the traction control system. April 1, 2002 to april 17 2003 the toyota sequoia under nhtsa # 10v17600 and # ea09006 had the 2003 toyota sequoia recalled for problems on the traction control system. My sequoia the vsc and trac lights will come on and then go off, even when road conditions are dry, or when even when vehicle is parked, when i go from park to drive.. In february 2017 i had a check engine lite come on , and also the vsc lights and trac lights cam on. I went to an auto zone, they coded the machine, which a generic P1126 light came on also, which was a defective magnetic clutch code. After they coded the toyota, all the lights have been off this past week, with 125 miles placed on vehicle.

Holes in the frame and excessive rust in the lift gate. This is a 2002 sequoia which was in the rust belt from 2002 to 2011. In 2011 moved to louisiana. I had rust issues since i purchased the vehicle in 2002. In 2006, the lift gate window rusted out and could no longer use the lift gate window. Since then, more rust was developing in the lift gate and elsewhere. In 2013, i received the recall for the spare tire cable. The louisiana dealership identified that the mechanism was rusted and no longer functional. They ordered the replacement unit to install. In the meantime, i told them about the severe rust issues in the car. They did a rust inspection and said it passed. In 2014, i returned to the same louisiana dealership for the takata recall. At that time, i told them my concern regarding the rust, especially since the vehicle was in the rust belt atm least 4 months a year. They said the frame passed the rust inspection and provided me with an "operational flowchart" for frame rust. They also said that if i find a hold in the frame larger than 10mm, it would be taken care of. In 2015, the vehicle was in the rust belt about 7 months. That year i had to install 2x4 supports to hold up my lift gate window. In 2016, the vehicle was in the rust belt about 5 months. In february 2017, i found at least 1 rust hole in the frame as per their operational flowchart. When i asked the dealership about the rust hole, their comment was the recall was completed and there is nothing you can do. I spoke to toyota and they stated that the recall was completed. I am totally disappointed in the ability of this vehicle to withstand rust. I am also driving a 1998 ford that was in the rust belt longer than the 2002 sequoia with no frame rust. The frame on this vehicle should not be rusting and needs to be properly repaired. See the attached photo.

*tr

I purchased my sequoia in 2003 and the trac off/vsc trac lights started turning on a few months after purchase. I have told the dealer every time i bring the car for service and have always been told that they cannot find a problem. Once i turn off car the lights go off. Well, on july 2015 while traveling on a windy road at 35 mph, we heard an warning alarm sound for the first time and the steering locked for about two seconds and the car felt like we had a flat tire or dragging something underneath. After about 10 seconds the car resumed back to normal as if nothing had happened. About two weeks later, i was backing out of a parking stall and it did the exact thing, including steering wheel locking. I thought i had raned over something, but the car went back to normal. Now every two weeks after i get on the freeway this seems to happen, one time it sounded like my engine fell off. Sometimes is worse than others and it doesn't matter if i'm going 25 or 65 mph. A few months ago i was traveling at 65 and the alarm came on, the grinding and dragging noise and my car started slowing down and swirved to the right. I just barely missed a motorcyclist. Lucky no one was behind me or i would have been rear ended. I purchased toyota for their safety and quality reputation. I take good care of my car and safety of my family is my priority. As i stated before, i have been complaining about this issue to my toyota dealer for years and they tell me there is no problem with my car. Now my problem is much bigger than just a light turning on. This should be a major concern and we should not wait for a loss of life to happen. Any car that loses power in the middle of a freeway without warning should be of grave concern to all. I love my car but cannot afford to trade it in.

When making left turns the vehicle skid control vsc/trac is being activated, the brake's control is being taken over by the vsc/trac computer, and the car won't slow down, until the vsc/trac turns off. The vsc/trac light is turned on, and grinding noise is being heard when it happens.

Complaint - electronic stability control, steering, vehicle speed control while driving my 2002 toyota sequoia while turning on city street & highway i encountered two significant safety issues the traction control system comes on while driving at various speeds, the vsc and traction warning lights abs & engine lights are illuminated as the vehicle pulled to the left/right. When the issue occurred, the vehicle makes a grinding sound and pulls very hard to the left/right. The vehicle loses acceleration and feels like the anti-lock braking mechanism is being engaged. The jerking pull resulted in crossing multiple lanes of the highway before control of the vehicle was regained. This is going to cause deaths known issues with other sequoias. *tr

When i entered the freeway, my vsc trak and vsc off lights came on, and the vehicle pulled to the right suddenly. I exited the freeway, and inspected my vehicle, to find nothing visible. I re-entered the freeway, traveled approx 100 miles, with no issue. Then, the same evening, i exited the toll road near my home, when the vsc trak and vsc off lights flashed and beeped, and brakes locked up on and off violently, as if the vehicle was possessed. I managed to get it home, as i was only about a mile from there, where i parked it, and had it towed to a shop. The mechanic was able to pull a code...The yaw sensor. But, the mechanic said that he could not guarantee that this would fix the problem. This happens while driving straight, after turning left or right, at any speed, and with no warning or visible reason for doing so. This poses a huge safety issue, especially while driving on the freeways at higher speeds. This issue could cause a deadly disaster at high speeds, and with many other vehicles on the road. This is definitely not an issue to ignore or take lightly.

Whether driving on residential streets or on the freeway, i have experienced unexpected pulls (jerking) on my steering wheel and would hear grinding noise where i can feel my car shaking (as if i was dragging a metal scraping the road as i am driving). This will happen for a few seconds (to as long as almost a minute, until i pulled over and turned off my engine in one case where i was driving on the freeway). Every time this occurs, the vsc light comes on and remains on for quite some time. When i first started experiencing this, a little over a year ago, i brought my car into the toyota dealership and was told there are no recalls or known issues. It would continue to happen periodically and since it wasn't happening all the time, the dealership would always say there's nothing wrong with my car, whenever i brought it in, because they can't re-create the issue. Lately, it's been happening almost on a daily basis (sometimes 2-3 times a day). Just yesterday, while i was making a u-turn, the vsc came on and locked my steering wheel to the point where it slowed my acceleration for several seconds after the turn. Then, while driving home from work on the freeway (straight, flat surface) going 65 mph, it happened again: my steering wheel jerked to 1 side, the grinding noise was heard and the vsc light came on. And later, while driving 25 mph on residential street (also straight and flat surface) it happened again. Today, i went online and typed in my vin# and sure enough, it says there are no recalls, however, there's multiple forums and complaints of this issue. There is definitely something wrong, especially if multiple owners are experiencing the same thing. This is definitely a hazard & safety issue because it happens unexpectedly. Friends, family and co-workers who have rode in my car all witnessed and experienced it. Please advise me on a resolution.

When driving 70 mph on the interstate, the vehicle periodically yanks hard to the right, it sounds like i have a flat tire, front right tire feels and sounds like it stopped turning. Car slows, vsc system idiot lights flash and beep. After i have successfully though unintentionally run another car off the road it returns to normal. The idiot lights stay on until the car is turned off. Has been taken to mechanics numerous times in last few weeks, cannot find a problem. But keeps happening. Mechanic is aware of 2003 and newer recall for the same reason, tried recalibrating yaw sensor successfully. 3 days later it happened again mechanics says the sensor may be periodically malfunctioning, over correcting for a nonexistent problem. It has happened going 30 mph once, as well as today the lights and beeping went off at a dead stop in my driveway. Went straight to mechanics, turned off car to go inside, nothing found when he pulled it in

While driving my 2002 sequioa at any speed above 20mph, the vehicle makes a terrifying grinding noise, while the skid icon beeps and the trac & vsc lights come on. The steering & braking becomes difficult and the car veers to the right. Its happened several times over the years and i recently learned of this forum. If i start the truck and let it run while i finish getting dressed, the lights will sometimes be on before i start driving and the problem doesn't occur but that could take up to an hour to occur, so i've learned to only drive it when the lights are on on the dash. Been to dealership who only reminds me that there are no recalls on my truck. One dealerships concern was only to sell me another vehicle while reminding me how expensive the issue was to fix, quoting me a repair cost of approximately $3000. I've had the truck since 2003 and it has only 116k miles, partly because i'm scared to either crash and hurt my family or kill someone else's family. I worked hard to pay for this vehicle and would like to keep it but i'm terrified to drive it. Living in louisiana where hurricane evacuations are common, i need my truck and i cant believe that a reputable company like toyota wont address the problem. Im a toyota fan & this is my 3rd toyota but i think i wont be buying another one.

Can the vsc/trac disengaged be due to a faulty sensor: can't this just stay turned off since there is a vsc trac button in truck to turn it off?

Just bought this used vehicle couple weeks ago...To discover that vsc and trac off lights comes go on when driving on surface roads at normal speed. Please address this problem asap before someone gets hurt.

NoNoN NoneNone20160803

When accelerating from stationary during dry conditions, the vcs light turns on and starts beeping while the anti-lock brakes engage suddenly with power loss and significant front end vibration. There is a loss of steering control and much slower braking which is dangerous and almost caused an accident. When the vehicle finally comes to a stop, the "vsc trac" and "trac off" lights come on and stay on and the car drives fine from that point on until turned off. When the "trac off" and "vcs trac" lights stay on after starting the car, the problem does not present itself. However, if those lights are not on when putting the car into drive, the problem will happen within the first mile. The code reader does not show a specific cause so officially unknown, however, the situation sounds exactly like that of other 2002 and later sequioas that were recalled for this problem. Our 2002 was not included in the recall as it was manufactured prior to the recall date but appears that it should have been.

While driving my 2002 toyota sequoia, i encountered two significant safety issues that were recalled as part of a prior nhsta campaign (10v-176). While my toyota is manufactured within the same window of a recall, my vin was not included. Nhsta has opened an active investigation (pe16006) in response to other owners with the same issues. Issue #1: traction control system on several occasions, the vehicle would not accelerate properly from a stopped position. The code based on the vcs warning light indicated an issue with the center position of the steering angle sensor (sas). The sensor was replaced and the ecu programming was updated to resolve the safety issue. Issue #2: electronic stability control on multiple occasions, the vehicle lost control while driving due to an issue with a faulty yaw rate sensor. While driving at various speeds, the vsc and traction warning lights illuminated as the vehicle pulled to the right. When the issue occurred, the vehicle makes a grinding sound and pulls very hard to the right. The vehicle loses acceleration and feels like the anti-lock braking mechanism is being engaged. The jerking pull resulted in crossing multiple lanes of the highway before control of the vehicle was regained. The mechanic experienced the same issue, and had to pull over to regain composure after almost getting into an accident. The faulty yaw sensor was replaced to repair the defect. After experiencing the issues with the toyota sensors that almost caused an accident, i had the faulty sensors replaced. I have requested reimbursement from toyota but was denied. The repair was for the safety issues which are under recall for the same model year (april 2002 ' april 2003), as my vehicle is manufactured in may 2002. The repairs included the defective steering sensor and the yaw stability sensor required to safely drive the vehicle.

The vsc/abs indicator lights appear intermittently without any warning. The car beeps, makes a heavy grinding noise and the abs brakes are automatically engaged without any action by the driver regardless of the speed, or whether driving on a highway or city street. The car will fishtail. Based on my research, i have found that this is a common problem among these vehicles and that there was a 2003 recall for this problem. I have a 2002 sequoia and the dealership has been doing the repairs since i purchased it in 2003. I took in the recall for the ball joints and even before i received it i had an issue. When turning right, mostly in curves there is a loud grinding in the frontend and has been doing this since i purchased the car . They told me that here was not a problem but i am still having this problem and now the trac has to stabilize my car, this has happen while traveling no turns. The trac light is on and off constantly for whatever reason they can not explain it to me. This is getting dangerous for me i have spent money on this car lately but this is a very large repair and need to know what can be done to get this fixed i was also told that there is not an issue with my airbag as well that my car was not affected. I need help with this, this is my only transportation and this is getting dangerous.

Identical problem as described by many others. Vsc-trac and trac-off lights randomly illuminated on dry, level pavement when brakes were applied, causing a loud grinding noise (much louder than normal application of anti-lock brakes), and car pulled and would not stop no matter how hard the brake pedal was pressed. First couple times, brakes were applied to slow the vehicle in traffic, so the failure to fully stop wasn't noticed. Then, i experienced an incident when the failure occurred coming to a stop sign. Even with the brake pedal fully depressed, the vehicle continued into the intersection. Had a car been coming in cross traffic, this would have resulted in an accident. After this incident, we took the car for service, and the yaw sensor had failed. The part was replaced at a cost of $800, and 3 months later, the vehicle is experiencing the vsc-trac and trac-off lights remaining illuminated after the self-check when the vehicle ignition is turned on. Restarting the car typically clears the lights. Repair shop has indicated that the the yaw sensor will not retain zero calibration. They set it, restart the vehicle, and it loses calibration. Error code is now indicating that the control module (part# 89541-0c050) has failed (another $1200+ repair on top of the yaw sensor, which was also defective). These failures clearly put vehicles at risk of accidents, and it is difficult to understand why the 2003 sequoias were recalled for vsc issues, but not the 2002, when the parts being replaced fit both years. I am the original owner of this vehicle, and the issues began at 60,000 miles. The vehicle currently has only 62,000 miles.

This vehicle was built with a tundra frame. Toyota recalled the rusty faulty unsafe frames. We just discovered that the sequoia we purchased in september 2014 has a faulty frame with larger than 10mm rust holes and no longer safe to drive putting me out $10,000. We did not see any recall on the frame at time of purchase because toyota did not advise of previous recalls when i spoke to them. When i looked thru the recalls on the nhtsa site, i also did not see this recall. Toyota is refusing to replace a faulty frame stating it is outside the coverate period. The previous owner did not replace the frame. It is unacceptable that toyota will not replace this frame. It is a known safety issue and i'm pleased that the frame did not rupture and cause an accident, injury or death. However, the issue still persists. I own a vehicle that is unsafe to drive with the manufacturer admitting issue but now refusing to correct the safety issue. The issue was found when the engine was making a terrible noise and we had the vehicle towed to the local car repair shop. The repair shop advised us of the tundra frame and recall. I did open a case with toyota which is: 1510140859 and they refused stating the issue is now mine because i purchased a used vehicle. I just want the frame replaced so the vehicle is safe to drive. This vehicle is known to run to 400,000 miles and consumer should not risk injury or death when there are holes in recall policy and used car purchases have no coverage when manufactures build faulty vehicles. This vehicle still has book value of 7000 and i put in more funds to ensure it gets to 400,000 miles.

This has happened about 10 times when the skid light will come on and the vehicle will go left to right and the brakes do not stop the vehicle. Then the vsc off & vsc trac off lights will come on. This has happened at speeds from 15 - 60 mph at times you loose control of the vehicle at the higher speeds for a few seconds. If this ever happens in heavy traffic it will cause an accident. Vehicle has been taken to a toyota specialist mechanic and they are still replacing parts. I understand that toyota recalled all 2003 sequoia's for this problem. My wife now refuses to drive the vehicle until it is fixed properly.

Abs system activates by itself driving on a flat, dry road. Abs/trac lights have intermittently illuminated for a few years (without abs activation to the best of my knowledge, my wife drives the vehicle primarily), lights turn off when key is cycled, no codes present in the system when scanned previously. Last occurrence for me was at 45mph, again a flat dry road. Vsc/trac lights flash, a warning buzzer sounds, and the abs creates a loud grinding noise as it activates. Vehicle pulled sharply to the left and up onto the center median. No accident due to a rounded curb and wide center median. However, if the center median were not there it could pull a vehicle into oncoming traffic on an undivided highway resulting in an accident.

I received a safety recall notice to inspect the front passenger airbag inflator module back in 2013. Upon taking the above vehicle to the simi valley toyota dealer for this inspection, the manager informed me that they did not have to inspect my airbag inflator module. In 2014 i received another safety recall notice to inform me that this front passenger airbag inflator module now needed to be replaced, but they did not have the parts to do so. The toyota corporation stated they would inform me when the parts were available. In 2015 i received another safety recall notice to inform me that they had the parts and that i could go to any toyota dealer to have this replacement done. On june 18, 2015, i contacted the simi valley toyota dealership to set up an appointment to comply with the safety recall notice. I was advised that they would not have that part in until friday, june 26, 2015. I made an appointment for june 26, 2015 and dropped my car off to have the airbag inflator module replaced. Six hours later, i was contacted to pick up my car and informed that they did not replace the front passenger airbag inflator module-they only inspected it. I was informed by the manager that my airbag did not need to be replaced per their records. I asked for a copy of their records, but the manager stated she could not provide me with anything to support that only an inspection of the module was needed-instead of the replacement per the safety recall notice from the toyota corporation. I showed the manager my copy of the recall notice, but she still maintained that it only needed to be inspected-not replaced. I am concerned that simi valley toyota dealership is not complying with the safety recall notices properly. I am also concerned that any front passenger in my car could be injured! Please advise how to proceed with safety recall.

Now, before we changed the axle a new issue popped up as the abs module caused the vsc system to engage at low speed below 10 mph. After 10 mph the system worked fine. During that engagement of the system i could have been killed by oncoming traffic or injured very badly. So, the mechanic went back to change out the left axle and did a diagnostic test on the sensors, which the left front was not reading and the right was intermittent. That was baffling to the mechanic, so we talked and changed both sensors and the left axle. He checked the vehicle and the vsc system still engaged at the low speed below 10 mph, most of the vibration was gone but some was still there at 70 mph, which he agreed with me that it could be possibly the drive shaft that ties into the 4 wheel drive system. So he decides to do the diagnostic test in the 4x2 mode and 4x4 mode on all the sensors on each wheel. In the 4x4 mode all the sensors checked and read fine. The 4x2 mode check of the system revealed a problem with in the system that tied to the abs control module. So, as of now he has worked with me to really understand the problem with this vehicle type to try to get to the root cause. He has since not charged me for the sensors, until he can get the abs module checked out through a certified repair manufacturer who works on these parts on a regular basis.

I bought this vehicle last week and after being on the road for approximately 30 minutes, the vehicle jerks to the right, the anti skid light starts beeping, something starts grinding under the hood, and then it all stops and the vsc trac, vsc off, and check engine lights all come on. After pulling over and turning off the engine and turning it back on, the vsc lights went off, but the check engine light remained on. After getting back on the road, the same thing happened again in a matter of minutes. Since then, the vehicle does the same exact thing every time i drive for more than about 20 minutes. Sometimes the transition is smooth and sometimes it takes up to 20-25 seconds for the noise under the hood to go away.

The first time my abs/vcs trac lights came on was after i had to brake hard on a downward hill. I accelerated to climb the other side of the hill and it was after doing that which the vcs trac and trac off lights first came on at around 168,000 miles. There was a fast beeping sound lasting for maybe 10 sec then it regained power. Now it will do it within just a few miles of our home. We have had several more occasions since this initial incident where there was a jerking/pulling of the right front tire. Also the air conditioning would come on and off like it was trying to surge. Also idles very low, below 500 rpm and then finally shuts off. This vehicle has become very dangerous to drive. We are not sure what to get fixed on it since we have read that other owners are being told that its anything from a yaw sensor, steering angle sensor, brake booster system, or a skid control computer issue. All of these are very pricey to get fixed and there are no guarantees that they will even correct the problem. Most have had the yaw sensor replaced and it did not correct the problem. Some of the mechanics we have talked to said that there could be brake dust or mud and road grime build up over the sensor making it malfunction and that it should be hosed off at an underbody carwash. We haven't tried this yet since we didn't put much faith in it until we discovered hearing again on youtube. The 2003 toyota sequoia vcs recall should be extended down to the 2002 models as well. We all are having the same issue that they did.

Vehicle makes a sputtering noise at acceleration and coasting speed. Even at stop. Sounds like a misfire and thud at some points. Causes a loss in power and jerk. *js

At stop and starting to accelerate vehicle hesitates while trying to go into intersection. Stalls for a few seconds vsc light comes on and once system gains control it lets me actually accelerate and proceed. Dangerous due to oncoming traffic and the hesitation time of not knowing how long until i regain control. *js

After hearing a clunking noise while driving, i took the sequoia to the toyota repair center where they inspected it and told me that the entire frame underneath the car was rusted through and had actually cracked in half towards the front end of the vehicle making it dangerous to drive. They informed me that toyota had issued an extended warranty several months prior, but which had expired 1 month before i brought the vehicle in. Upon calling toyota customer service, they told me that the extended warranty was only issued for sequoia's to receive an under-coating to prevent freeze rust during the colder months and that if they noticed the frame was already broken down, only then would they replace it. Since i had already gotten an under-coating done by my mechanic prior to toyota sending us the notice, i did not bring our vehicle to toyota's repair center. For this reason, toyota said they could do nothing about our broken frame since we never came in for our under-coating. I cannot understand how my sequoia, at only 10 years old, can have such extensive damage if it was supposed to be properly created and installed in the first place. To have the frame completely rusted through and actually crack in half, all while my wife was using the car to drive my children to and from school, practice, etc., is especially disconcerting after hearing how dangerous it was to be driving it by the toyota mechanic. I believe that it is toyota's duty to fix this issue with my vehicle since it was their negligence that created this poorly constructed vehicle/frame and i am issuing this complaint in order to pursue toyota in this endeavor. *tr

While driving on fwy, vsc light comes on, the brakes are being applied by the system, causing pulling of the steering into other lanes. Was able to pull over, and it stopped at 10 mph, turned off car and it re-set system, it happened 6 times on the way home, almost causing accidents as it jerks the steering immediately as it applies the brakes to gain stability again. It has happened intermittently ever since, even at slow speeds. It is in shop now, $3500 to fix it, it is a well documented problem on the net, this should be a recall. Someone will get killed, a cyclist in a shoulder, or car hitting another or losing control and rolling over. With all the complaints regarding the vsc system, how can you ignore it?

After purchasing my 2002 toyota sequoia with only 64k miles i have since learned about a rust issue with the frame. With me not being the original owner and not having my name updated in toyota's system so i did not receive a recall notice or service champagne as they call it. I have emailed toyota corp and have received a call back as well as calling them direct at 1-800-331-4331. I am being told that due to the service campaign ending july 2014 that i will have to pay out of pocket for any testing or repairs. This vehicle was originally purchased in nj and then went on to utah so it's seen its share of snow and salt. There is a considerable amount of rust all over the frame and i am concerned about its safety and drivability. I could understand if this was damage caused by the owner however this is an issue of quality from toyota however they are not willing to correct the issue anymore. As i diehard toyota owner i am very disappointed in the way i am being treated and feel for the safety of myself and my family. *tr

While driving at a speed of 35, my truck suddenly pulled to the right, started to shake and a beeping alarm came on, the picture of the vechicle skidding also lit up and the trac off and vsc trac also lit up and stayed on. Upon pulling over and cutting the truck off and restarting the vechicle, the lights where no longer lit. This has happened several more times. I have taken it to a mechanic and they have placed a machine on it to see if it registars anything, and nothing shows up. This really scared me and daughters track team mates, because we where not expecting this. This is the only vechicle i have at this time to drive, do to my husband being deployed. Toyota says that they have no recalls, but there are several complaints on the internet of this problem. *tr

Horrible squealing noise at start up. Engine almost has a burst of roar for a few seconds then dies down and belt quiets after a few minutes. *js

No matter what speed, the vsc alarm goes off, the car brakes violently and pulls to the right, and makes a horrible grinding sound. Then the vsc light stays on until the car is turned off and reset. Under warranty, i went to gilroytoyota in 2014 to get this fixed. They told me it was the yaw rate sensor, however that isn't covered in the warranty. It would cost around $800-$1000 to replace. They did replace the brake booster assembly, and that worked for about 6 months until the vsc light came back on and the car pulled and braked again. Very very dangerous when driving on the freeway when this happens, and the alarm goes off and the car brakes and pulls, could result in accident. Makes a horrible grinding noise as well that i can feel in the brake pedal when this happens. The car is always in motion when this happens, always on asphalt, not on dirt or in 4 wheel drive. (i don't use the 4 wheel drive) happens at any speed, either turning or going straight.

While driving downhill and around a curve at about 25mph, my 2002 sequoia began beeping, making a loud grinding noise and the traction light came on. I had little to no control of the vehicle. Problem lasted a few seconds. Fortunately, i was in a neighborhood with wide streets less than a mile from my home and was able to get home safely. Considering that i was on a curve and it was raining, i thought it may be a one time issue with traction control. I drove the truck for a few days with no issues. Yesterday, my wife was rounding a curve at about 50mph on a highway in heavy traffic on dry pavement and the truck did the same thing. She narrowly avoided a collision and was able to pull to the shoulder. Since then, the truck will intermittently beep and grind for a couple of seconds before the vsc off light comes on. As long as the light is on, indicating the vsc is disengaged, there are no problems. Problem seems to occur more when rounding a curve and braking, but that is not always the case. It has happened at various speeds, during both braking and accelerating, and while on flat ground or a hill. The problem only lasts a few seconds, but you have no control of the vehicle during that time. The vehicle will accelerate, decelerate, brake, or pull on its own. I am extremely concerned about losing control and wrecking, potentially causing injury to my wife and kids or another driver. Upon researching, i found recall number 10v176000, nhtsa action number ea09006. This recall was for 2003 sequoias with a very similar problem with the vehicle stability control (vsc) system. Why was the 2002 model not included in the recall since it seems to have the same issue? *tr

Last month, while traveling home from summer vacation on flat ground, at approximately 60 mph, the vsc, trac lights came on in the dash. There was a terrible grinding noise from under the car and beeping inside the car. The car pulled hard to the right and decelerated abruptly in the middle of a busy highway. Thank goodness i was able to pull into the turn lane and limp into a gas station. This occurred three more times over the next 500 miles until i got home. I took it to the dealer, they replaced the yaw sensor. Only 3 days after that, it happened again. Took it to the dealer, they replaced two brake sensors and a master cylinder. Today, five days after that, it happened again. This time, thankfully at only 25 mph with no traffic. This is a very scary, dangerous problem that toyota should not be ignoring. It has been recalled in the 2003 model, and should be in the 2002 model as well! *tr
