NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 7728 [USA]: This condition can cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Vehicle description: some sonata vehicles equipped with 2.5 liter v-6 engines and all elantra model vehicles may have experienced intermittent low-speed engine stalling, which could occur if the maf (mass air flow) sensor electrical signal is interrupted as a result of engine vibration transmitted to the maf sensor connector wiring harness.
dealers will re-route the maf sensor connector wiring harness.
hyundai recall nos. 039 and 040.Owner notification began november 18, 2000.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 9669 [USA]: Such slippage can cause premature deterioration of the friction element surfaces and could cause the vehicle not to accelerate, or not accelerate as expected, when the driver presses the accelerator pedal.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The automatic transmission pressure control solenoid valve seals do not remain sufficiently elastic, resulting in transmission fluid leakage. This leakage can result in reduced pressure application to the clutches, brake, and kickdown servo, allowing them to slip.
dealers will replace the pressure control solenoid valve.
owner notification began july 14, 1999.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact hyundai at 1-800-829-9956.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 2000236 [Canada]: Engine
Certain vehicles may experience intermittent low speed engine stalling. This may occur if the mass air flow (maf) sensor electrical signal is interrupted as a result of engine vibration transmitted to the maf sensor connector wiring harness. Intermittent low speed engine stalling may result in a vehicle crash. Correction: dealers will replace the maf sensor connector and a portion of the wiring harness to incorporate a new relief loop in the harness to reduce the vibration that may be transmitted to the sensor connector.

  • Recall 1999140 [Canada]: Powertrain
On certain vehicles, the pressure control solenoid valve seals in the automatic transmission are not sufficiently elastic. This could result in automatic transmission fluid leakage at the pressure control solenoid valve interface to the valve body. This fluid leakage results in reduced pressure application to the internal transmission friction elements, which allows them to slip. Slippage of the friction elements can cause premature deterioration of the friction element surfaces and may cause the vehicle not to accelerate, or not to accelerate as expected, when the driver presses the accelerator pedal. Correction: a new pressure control solenoid valve seal will be installed in the transmission.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

I have a 99 hyundai elantra 4 door. Last week the steering column caught on fire while it was being driven. More specifically, i was at the time in the hardee's drive thru when the smoke and flames started. I was able to get my car to roll out of the drive thru and into the parking lot. I have spoken to a few mechanics who say that it seems like it was a short in the electrical system in the steering wheel. It melted all of the steering column, dash, cracked the windshield with the heat, and other fire damage. The car is now totaled and undriveable. I am a single mother of 2 kids and this was my only means of transportation. Also about a year ago, i was in a head on collision that was not my fault, and the airbags did not deploy in the steering wheel. I had contacted hyundai afterwards, but they said that the car was fine and not to worry. I have no way to scan my documents, but i have a police report as well as several emails from hyundai from last year, as well as pictures of the damage.

I have a 1999 hyundai elantra with 128,750 mi. At. The evaporative emissions canister has become disconnected from the body of the car where it is bolted which is underneath the trunk behind the left rear wheel due to the bracket rusting and breaking due to inadequate steel used which does not resist salt and improper design for not placing the canister in a protected area of the car or or placing shrouding around the canister to shield the salt spray from the road/rear wheel. The result is the pipes from the fuel tank which convey fuel vapors have disconnected from the evap canister and trigger a P0422 (check engine light) which is a leak in the evap system which means the car will not pass ny inspection. *js

My 1999 hyundai elantra gl sedan has been experiencing intermittent (but with increasing frequency) low/"idle" speed engine stalling. This presents a dangerous situation when the car stalls at a stoplight or when slowing to turn in a residential neighborhood. Most stalls are occurring at less than 25mph. I have also experienced intermittent "check engine light" episodes during these occurrences. I have taken the car to my mechanic for diagnosis/repair...The computer history show maf sensor but no failure. Additionally, the 'check engine light" does not remain "on". I took the car to the local hyundai dealership after reading recall/service bulletins related to the maf sensor wiring. They also performed the computer diagnostic that indicated maf sensor issues in the computer history. They also informed me that my vehicle is not one of the hyundai elantra/sonata vin codes. I would appreciate some information from you regarding the resolution to this problem. The hyundai recall/campaign id is 039 and the nhtsa/odf campaign is 00v259001. *tr

Purchased 1999 hyundai elantra in april of 1999. On 1/15/2001 vehicle died and was towed to dealership. Transmission replaced. Mileage at the time-33,663. On april 24, 2008, i was advised by mechanic that the transmission was slipping. Vehicle does not properly shift into gear. Entire car shakes if driven over 50 mph. Car speeds up when accelerator pressed. When i noticed there was a manufacturer's recall, in regards to the transmission, i contacted dealer who refused to replace pressure control solenoid valve. Was told that the recall did not involve my vin. Contacted hyundai corporate office and was told the same thing. Vehicle now has 134,000 miles on it. Recall id #99v178000. Neither dealer nor hyundai will honor. This is a definite safety issue and needs to be resolved immediately. Numerous complaints have previously been filed regarding the same issue. *tr

I took my 1999 hyundai elantra in to obrien auto park in fort myers service center to get looked at and fixed. I had trouble codes that i had checked prior going there at autozone that were codes po747, po743, po442. The first to are codes involving my automatic transmission. I viewed on your website that there were recalls on the pressure control solenoid that involved code po747 which states it was in the stuck on position! I told the service manager all of this there and he told me there were no recalls on the solenoid and that he couldn't do anything for me! I had 2 other codes that were, po732, and po734 pertaining to the 2nd and 4th gear ratio being incorrect! I explained that at first there was a electrical issue which change the codes to the state it's in now and he told me we'll look at it and call you when we find out anything. I said ok, he called a few hours later and told me the service tech said i needed a new transmission. I said no, i am not an idiot! There was an electrical problem and this is why i brought it in. He stated to me that, he could not go by the codes i had from autozone because they were generic codes and hyundai wouldn't except them. My only option was to have the transmission replaced. This guy is lying and i know it! Even the guy at autozone told me it was a electrical malfunction caused by the solenoid!!! Please help. Now i am out of work 2 days now and even may loose my job over this! Nothing was done to correct this problem and i would never buy a hyundai again!!!!!!!! *jb

While driving on the freeway, the hood on my vehicle flew open, without warning, and smashed into my windshield. The last time the hood was popped open was several months ago for an oil change. I had, in all of that time, never noticed that the hood was slightly open. I have attempted to contact the manufacturer as well as the dealership from where i purchased the vehicle, on several occasions, only to be told that they did not consider this to be their responsibility, claiming that they know no reason why the hood flew open unexpectedly. Thus far, i have not had it repaired. *nm

(1) on december 20,2004, the first cold day of the year, my 1999 elantra would not start. (2) the next day, december 21, 2004, the car started, but as i would come to a stop at a traffic light, the engine would begin to shake violently and the car would stall out. This also occurred while traveling at speeds under 20 mph. (3) i drove directly to my hyundai dealership which assessed the car and told me the mass airflow sensor had gone bad and needed to be replaced, which was not covered under my warranty. The part was replaced that afternoon at 275.00 plus labor= 391.00. This evening, december 23,2004 after searching the nhtsa website, i realized that the 1999 hyundai elantra had been recalled on sept 7, 2000 (nhtsa campaign # 00v259001/hyundai recall # 040.) i immediately contacted hyundai consumer complaint division and was told my a representative that my vehicle vin # was not one of those included in the recall campaign because it had been manufactured on may 24, 1999 and the campaign only included 1999 elantras manufactured between june 1, 1999-june 6, 2000. I find it extremely hard to believe that a 7 day period between the date my car was manufactured and the date the recall began should be the reason why this costly repair would not be covered. I am looking to have this complaint investigated, and be reimbursed for the cost of parts/labor for this defect, which hyundai will not allow. *jb

I bought the car brand new. After about 8 months the car would get stuck in second gear when slow down. The car also kicks very hard while it does this. One time i was rounding a turn after it rained and as i slowed down around the corner the car kicked and the rear end of the car slid out into the plastic divider poles between the lanes. The poles caused a ding in the car an cracked a window. At the time it happened so fast i thought i had hit something and only a week later when the car kicked again did i realize that was probably what happened. I brought the car down to the dealer and was told i would be given a new pulse generator under warranty. Then there was a recall on a part in the transmission and that was fixed. The problem still persisted and i have had the pulse generator changed four more times. My warranty is now up and the problem has come back. I have even installed a brand knew transmission. *jb

I have read many of the complaints about the hyundai. I've eliminated practically all the same complaints about the engine performance by tuning the engine every 30 to 35 thousand miles. The gas mileage and performance has been very acceptable. Yes i too have had to replace the manifold, mas air sensor, and other small maintenance parts. The only thing i haven't been able to repair is when i'm setting at a stop and idling, the engine tends to overheat. But when i began to drive it quickly cools back down. My hyundai now has approximately 230,000 miles and is still in service but still overheats. Any suggestions? *tr

I done all the things hyundai recommended which was having a diagnostic, which so far i've had 2 done, and gettting a complete tune-up, the problem is still there .After the first diagnotic i was told that the computer reset itself, so that now no problem shows, and they claim they cannot go in and check without the diagnostic showing a problem, i think this is a despective practice since the computer resetting now hides any pre-extisting problems. This situation is causing me a considerable amount of stress and fear for my family safety and i feel i am now stuck with a car that is now undrivable and that hyundai is putting my families life at risk.*ak
