  Daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) is recalling certain 2006-2020 freightliner columbia, 2006-2021 freightliner business class m2, 2007-2020 freightliner coronado, 2014-2021 freightliner 122 sd, 2007 sterling a 9500, 2006 freightliner argosy, 2006-2007 sterling at9500, 2008-2021 freightliner cascadia, 2006-2008 freightliner classic, 2006-2011 freightliner century class, 2006-2010 freightliner fld, and 2017 western star 5700 vehicles. The rear reflective tape may be partially covered by the mudflap hanger bracket, which may reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers on the road. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

These vehicles are equipped with kidde plastic-handle or push button 'pindicator' fire extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. The pump to rail high pressure fuel line support system used on these engines is sensitive to assembly torque and may be damaged during service work. • Recall 94598 [USA]: The steering could unexpectedly turn left or right, making the vehicle more difficult to control and increasing the risk of a crash.
  Daimler trucks is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 freightliner cascadia, columbia, century, coronado, and classic xl trucks manufactured from november 1, 2004, through june 15, 2010 for the rack and pinion steering system. The lower pinion bearing may corrode and fail. A failed bearing may lead to damage of the spool valve seals. A damage spool valve seal may allow hydraulic fluid to flow to the right or left turn port instead of flowing to the return port.
  daimler trucks will inspect the lower bearing for corrosion. If corrosion is found, the rack and pinion system will be replaced. If no corrosion is found, on the bearing, the bearing will be packed with grease and the rubber bellows will be replaced with sealant added between the bellows and the rack housing. Under certain road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may adversely affect the slip angle calculation of the electronic stability control (esc) system. This might cause the esc to perceive an over steering situation and therefore apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived to be stable.

  On certain trucks equipped with a detroit diesel dd13, dd15 or dd16 engine, the support system for the high pressure fuel line (between the fuel pump and the fuel delivery rail) may be damaged during a service repair procedure. Incorrect torque applied to the dampener "p" clip fasteners may damage the fasteners, which could allow the clips to loosen. This could result in a cracked fuel line and a diesel fuel leak. Diesel fuel leakage may ignite on a hot engine surface and cause a fire. As well, diesel fuel spilt on the roadway could endanger other road users by making the roadway unexpectedly slippery. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the high pressure fuel line and install a more robust fuel line support system.

  On certain trucks equipped with a rack & pinion steering system, the lower pinion bearing may corrode and fail. As a result, the vehicle may require additional steering input while driving in a straight line. This could also cause a loss of steering power assist. If it passes the inspection, new bellows will be installed and grease added to the bottom pinion bearing. A steering gear that fails the inspection will be replaced.

• Output shaft failure and separation investigation # PE11028

  On august 29th 2011 the office of defects investigations (odi) opened this preliminary evaluation (pe11-028) on daimler trucks north america (dtna) for output shaft failures located in the forward-rear axle carrier of certain class 8 vehicles equipped with arvin meritor rt series output shaft assemblies.At the time of this (pe) opening, odi was aware of a field campaign and two field reports thought to be related to this alleged safety concern.The dtna campaign address a risk resulting from an incorrect heat treatment process of the output shaft (sf441ab); which was initially believed to be associated with the two field reports.On october 21st 2011 odi received dtnas pe information request (ir) letter response which indicated no additional complaints or field reports related to the alleged defect.Odi also learned that the two original field reports noted in the opening resume were u-joint failures and were unrelated to the service campaign. Dtna claimed a total of 96 warranty claims, all related to performing the service campaign but unrelated to any field failures. Upon receiving dtnas pe-ir letter response odi learned that even if a fracture were to occur in relation to the alleged defect, it would be located at the base of the splined section of the shaft opposite the output yoke and inside the axle housing.The output shaft assembly is bolted into the axle housing and will remain secure in the event of a fracture. Based on the fact that there are no consumer complaints, injuries or field reports and the benign consequence of the alleged defect, odi is closing this investigation.Odi will continue to monitor this field campaign.
