NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 122239 [USA]: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected ocs would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.
Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 genesis coupe vehicles manufactured december 12, 2008, to june 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat occupant classification system (ocs) may dislodge when the seat is moved.

  • Recall 92737 [USA]: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. additionally, when the ignition is in the 'on' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of park without first applying the brake. this may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Hyundai motor company (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 accent, model year 2007-2011 azera, sonata and sante fe,2006-2011 tucson, 2009-2011 elantra touring, 2007-2010 elantra, 2008-2011 veracruz, 2009-2011 genesis, 2010-2011 genesis coupe, 2007-2008 entourage, and 2006-2008 tiburon vehicles. Originally, in april 2013, hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 accent and tucson, model year 2007-2010 elantra, model year 2007-2011 santa fe, model year 2008-2009 veracruz, model year 2010-2011 genesis coupe, and model year 2011 sonata vehicles. In september 2013, hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the park position and cause the electronic stability control (esc) malfunction light to illuminate.
hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on april 22, 2013. Owners may contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

  • Recall 2014558 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, a diode in the stop lamp circuit could fail, which could result in the brake lights failing to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed, increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will repair the stop lamp switch circuit.

  • Recall 2013376 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, corrosion could occur in the brake system hydraulic electronic control unit. Over time, this could affect the control unit's operation, causing a low/soft brake pedal and reduced braking effectiveness. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

  • Recall 2013325 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the switch.

  • Recall 2016508 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, objects or debris located under the front passenger seat could contact the electrical connector of the occupant classification system (ocs) and disconnect the connector if the seat is moved. This would disable the ocs and illuminate the instrument cluster air bag warning lamp. If the ocs is disabled, the first stage front passenger airbag would deploy in a frontal collision, regardless of the weight and size of the front passenger seat occupant. If the seat were to be occupied by a child seat or small statured occupant, it could increase the risk of injury. Additionally, this condition could cause the second stage of the frontal passenger airbag to fail to deploy during a crash, which could increase the risk of injury to the front passenger seat occupant. Correction: dealers will secure the ocs connector to prevent it from being disconnected.

  • Recall 2013099 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the switch.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Brake hydraulic control module failure investigation as of 20131017

On october 28, 2013, hyundai motor company (hyundai) submitted a defect information report (dir) to nhtsa describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (my) 2009 through 2012 hyundai genesis sedans (nhtsa recall no. 13v-489).The hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) module. The dir indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of hecu control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In october 2011, the hecu supplier notified hyundai that the brake fluid used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late march 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundais recall includes genesis vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the hecu change. In march 2013, hyundai initiated a service campaign (tl6) to replace brake fluid in the subject vehicles with brake fluid with better corrosion resistance properties.According to hyundais dir letter, after pe13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the tl6 campaign subsequently required hecu replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting hyundai to conduct a safety recall.Hyundais repair procedures for 13v-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to june 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the hecu is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to june 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the hecu. Analysis of failure data reported to nhtsa and provided by hyundai in response to odis information request letter for pe13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to june 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (iptv) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The my 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 iptv) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after june 1, 2010, odi identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 iptv and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.Odi will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of hyundais recall. The voqs noted in the failure report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 10535436, 10533459, 10525123, 10523412, 10514041, 10511037, 10510525, 10502374, 10499922, 10497935, 10492198, 10491494.

While driving my genesis 2010 sedan, the battery light illuminated, then the power steering did not respond. I was about 1/2 miles from my house and i had to wrestle with my steering wheel until i got home. The scary part was that i unexpectedly lost power steering during a turn at the traffic light. Luckily, no on coming traffic was near as i completed the turn on the opposite slide of the street. I fortunately arrive home, parked the vehicle and had it towed to the mechanics. I learned that the alternator went out and so did the battery. Luckly, during the turn i did not crash, but it was very nervous the rest of the way.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 hyundai genesis coupe. After being parked for three months, the vehicle failed to start. The contact looked under the hood and found rodent excrement, food particles, and noticed that the wiring harness was chewed through. The vehicle was towed to bob baker hyundai (located at 5285 car country dr, carlsbad, ca 92008, (760) 929-4900) where it was diagnosed that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the contact stated that the mechanic failed to properly diagnose the vehicle. The repair cost $1,300. The contact stated that the check engine and tire pressure monitoring system warning indicators illuminated after the vehicle was repaired. Additionally, the contact was informed that the engine's wiring harness was soy-based. After the vehicle was repaired, it failed to operate as intended. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,773.

Headlights flash when switching from "auto" to "on" position. Occasionally the headlights in the "on" positon will blackout for 2-5 seconds until headlight stalk is giggled. All of these conditions can occur moving or standing still. On any type of roadway.

Engine cranks normally attempting to start. When failed to start, the 'start' button is pushed to stop the attempt. Tried again. Took 3 attempts to finally start. Once started the engine revs at high rpm's. When put in 'd' the car lurches and accelerates without pushing gas pedal. If the car is turned off after starting and restarted, fast acceleration is eliminated. Car has ultimately started, but the fear is it will get worse and ultimately fail to start stranding the driver. Car runs perfectly in normal driving on the highway. This has occurred almost daily for 90 days. Hyundai service: taken to hyundai on two occasions. They say they could not duplicate problem and no computer error codes generated. Stumped! Can do nothing if problem can't be duplicated by service tech! Keeping quiet? New condition 4/26/18! Car has shut down twice at a stop light, 4/26 and 4/29. Fear of shutting down while in traffic as reported in user forums. Hyundai user forums: dozens of owners disclose that the problem is widespread across years and models. Report that hyundai denies there is an issue with problematic starting and stalling at low speeds and high speeds! Owners report fear of serious accident if the car stalls on the highway, entering traffic or making turns across traffic.

Background: am original owner of this 2010 hyundai genesis that was purchased july 31, 2010 and that currently has less than 35,000 miles on it. Issue: unexpectedly, the brakes became "squishy" (i.E. Brake pedal depressed a long distance before engaging brakes). Advised by hyundai dealer that it is a faulty hecu unit and needs to be replaced for $3,800. Note: the brake fluid was replaced in april 2013 and the hecu unit was supposedly inspected in january 2014. I believe these were done in response to prior recalls. That said, upon some further reading on the internet, i am under the impression that when this problem was previously identified for recall, the recall should have resulted in my hecu unit being replaced, not just inspected. I intend to raise this issue with the hyundai dealer and, hopefully, hyundai will stand behind the replacement of the hecu unit without charging me.

I bought the car used with 32,500 miles. From day 1 there was a grind going into 5th gear. This was a known problem, but no tsb or recall was ever sent out about it. Just a tsb to change the fluid . At 82,000 miles the 5th gear synchro broke. I had to buy a used transmission from the junk yard and had it installed for $820 total including the transmission, labor and fluid. Why would they claim they have a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, when it only covers the first owner. And why would they know about the 5th gear grind and not do anything about it.

The brakes malfunctioned while driving on a local road. Stepped on the brake pedal, felt normal at first, then pedal gave way almost to the floor and braking power was very little. Pumping the brake pedal recovered some brake power only temporarily. Pulled over and shut down the car. About an hour later, restarted the car and the brakes were still poor. Brought the car to the dealer who could not work on it until the next day. The next day the dealer found no problems with the brakes and i refused to take back the car until something was done. The dealer kept the car about six weeks and road tested it almost every day but could not provoke the problem to return. I asked the dealer to replace any or all parts that could be the cause of the problem. The dealer refused to do such a thing and also stated that there was no way for hyundai to diagnose the trouble. They relied on only the electronic sensors and since there were no fault codes they would not take any liability to replace parts on a presumptive basis. I considered the car untrustworthy and said it should not be driven. I traded the car in at the same dealer for another car with a different braking system design. *tr

This car has been a headache since it went out of warranty (ironically). First it was the car wouldn't start due to an electrical problem between the alarm system and key fob. The starter was the next to go. Most recently the fuel pump went literally while i was driving the car. Fortunate i was able to make my way off the road and avoided collusion and possible physical injury. There were no warnings that there were any issues with the car, no dashboard warnings, no usual performance. The car was fine one second and completely dead the next. After incurring $300 in towing charges, first to my local mechanic who was unable to diagnose the problem because his computer couldn't read the hyundai codes, then to the hyundai dealership. Hyundai claims it is the fuel pump. I'll remain skeptical until they confirm the car is fully functional. I find it impossible to comprehend how a 6 year old vehicle that is impeccably maintained should have the degree of problems i have experienced over the past couple of years. Needless to say, i will not be keeping the car for long and will not be continuing my relationship with hyundai. Unfortunate since i have been a hyundai owner since 2001.

While driving on highway i-10 w was driving at 65 mph, had to brake to slow down to about 10 mph behind traffic that was slowing down and came to complete halt with foot on brake. Hello nhtsa administrator, i bought a new hyundai genesis in march 2010. Around august 2010, i had a small fender bender in the parking lot. To keep warranty intact on the car, hyundai insisted that the wiring harness on the car be replaced, which i did for approximately $5000. Since then, i have had multiple electronic items go bad in the car. I replaced some of these at my own expense. But the problem has gotten worse with some expensive electronic components going bad over the last 2 years. In normal circumstances, these components should not go bad over the life of the car, and certainly not at a frequency that they have failed in my car. I attribute these failures to bad/defective job done during wiring harness replacement. But hyundai has refused to accept responsibility since the car is out of warranty. Below is a list of the bad components, approximate date of the component going bad, whether it is replaced/fixed and approximate expense to fix them 1. Telescopic steering wheel--2015--repaired as part of warranty 2. Power switch assembly driver's seat--jan 2016--$236.19--paid out-of-pocket to get it replaced 3. Jog dial assembly--oct 2016--$1031.70--paid out-of-pocket to get it replaced 4. Front cabin dome light assembly--feb 2017--$376.91--paid out-of-pocket to get it replaced 5. Smart cruise control--mar 2017--not replaced--dealership gave me a quote of ~$4500 to replace 6. Passenger cabin dome light assembly--aug 2017--not replaced--$4500 estimate to replace 7. Multi disc cd player--feb 2018--not replaced--$1000 estimate to replace i would like nhtsa to investigate hyundai for this matter and force them to pay for repairs. As a consumer, i feed cheated and being forced to double pay for repairs - once for the wiring harness replacement and now for all problems attributed to it. The cruise control also turned completely off at times. I've returned the car twice to remedy the problem and was told they could not find a solution and have requested assistance from hyundai. I waited almost 2 months with no word from hyundai and finally went to the dealership on 9/22/15 and was told they were still waiting for instruction from hyundai and they now have a second car with the same problem. I feel this is very dangerous and want to post this listing because i believe lifes are at stake and owners of these vehicles will more than likely be ticketed for causing accidents and, worse case scenario, be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

I had two prior incidents where partial to complete braking failure occurred previously, but the issue was only temporary (a single stop). This incident persisted for duration of my drive, prompting research into the issue (and discovery of the known abs hecu corrosion issue. I was attempting to slow and make a turn onto a sidestreet on the way to work, when the brake pedal went to the floor with minimal resistance (and limited braking effectiveness). This prompted a panicked pumping of the brakes to eventually stop the vehicle 5-10ft shy of the rear bumper of another car. After carefully testing to ensure i had some braking effectiveness, i finished the short distance to my office, noting that the pedal remained very soft, going to the floor with ease, and having limited success in stopping the vehicle. I shudder to think what would have happened had this issue presented itself at highway speeds. I have already contacted hyundai corporate and dropped my vehicle off with a dealership for recall repair. I am hoping this incident, coupled with my manufacture date (prior to june 1, 2010 cutoff date) will justify a full abs hecu replacement under recall.

Driving about 10 mph on tight curvy country road, brake pedal went to the floor. Pumping the pedal got the car to stop. Dealer said the brake force distribution module failed, allowing brake fluid to simply bypass being sent to the brakes. This is a very dangerous failure mode; it should fail by eliminating abs but still giving full brake force. There was no indication on dash lights that anything had failed.

I was driving on route 81 to harrisburg and heard a loud noise and my engine just shut off. I had to coast over to the side of the road to a safe place. I had to get my car towed and my mechanic inspected the vehicle and advised that the connecting rod inside the engine broke and put a hole in the engine and the oil tank. I had to get the car towed and while it was on the tow truck i saw the oil just pouring out of the bottom of the vehicle. The technician told me that this is very odd for this to break. He said it is most likely a manufacturers defect because this does not just happen. Oil tank was full with oil and the car has been well taken car of. Any other incidents like this one?

When i pressed on the brake pedal, it felt mushy. Completely different from the firm braking the vehicle brakes had exhibited just a few minutes previously. I could feel the brakes trying to engage at the proper brake pedal placement but then i had to continue pressing the pedal because the brakes were not engaging. Only after i continued to apply pressure to the brake pedal toward the end of the pedals range of motion did i finally feel the brakes begin to slow the car. After this first occurrence, since i was over 300 miles from home, i had to anticipate any braking i needed to do. I found that each time i needed to brake, if i pumped the brakes after the first initial pressing of the brake pedal, i could get the brake pedal to build up pressure so i would have close to the same braking 'feel' that i had before this problem began. I returned home on saturday. I did not drive the car on sunday. On monday, i took the genesis to the hyundai dealership. After almost two hours, they said they had identified the problem as the master cylinder. I had the master cylinder replaced on tuesday. There was almost no change in the mushiness of the brake pedal. After searching the internet for possible causes i discovered hyundai has had considerable complaints about fading and mushy brakes on their genesis line of vehicles. It seems it all stems from the hydraulic electronic control unit module. So, with hyundai knowing this, why did the service department of the abilene, tx dealership recommend a master cylinder replacement when, in my estimation, the first culprit should have been the abs module? I discovered this persistent issue with the genesis vehicle on wednesday, i have an appointment with the abilene tx hyundai dealership on thursday. I'll see how they respond. *tr

When driving the vehicle, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and my brakes went totally out. It is a miracle there wasn't a crash with someone killed. There was a recall for this same issue and my recall was done last december but obviously the damage was already done and it did not fix my car. I called that dealership back today and they advised me that because the recall had been done and my car is out of warranty, that everything will be at my expense to repair. I will also have to pay to have it towed to be repaired. Hyundai should be paying for the towing, repair, and loaner vehicle as this was a major safety issue that they have failed to take care of. *tr

I began having this issue 10 days ago with my 2010 genesis coupe. The concern i had was not only was the interior flickering but it resulted in my running night brake lights not working. I took the car to the dealer i'm at 62k miles just out of warranty. They ran diagnostic and thought it was a lose bracing for the wires. I picked it up and the issue began again. I took it in 4 days ago they then said it was a fuse switch issue and replaced it but the issue continued. They then said it may be a fuse box issue couple of hundred $$ or worst case a main issue with total wiring from internal fuse box and fuse box in the engine area which could run $2k! But no definite answer to what was causing this. The hyundai representative said they even happen to have a senior electric engineer on location that day and he couldn't pinpoint exactly the problem. *tr

On 7/1/2014 i was driving at approximately 35 mph when i put my foot on the brake of my 2010 hyundai genesis and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor of the car and the car did not stop. The next day i phoned hyundai about the incident and asked if i could bring the car in for a brake inspection. I was told do to 4th of july holiday they would not be able to look at the car. Since they would not make this a priority i took the car to my local mechanic for inspection on 7/3/14. The local mechanic was not able to determine the cause. Later that day the car had begun stopping as needed with no cause identified so i went back to normal driving but maintained feeling uncomfortable. I had forgotten that previously i had taken my car to hyundai service to have a safety recall performed on 1/27/2014 (recall #114) that specifically related this this as a possibility. The service involved replacing the brake fluid due to having too low of a boiling temperature leading to eventual corrosion of the hecu anti-lock braking component resulting in reduced stopping ability or complete failure of braking power which is what occurred. On 8/13/2014 once again i went to put my foot on the brake while driving and again my foot went straight to the floor and was unable to stop the vehicle resulting in me almost hitting another car in my work parking lot. I immediately took the car to the dealer insisting they perform a brake inspection. They determined after a few days that it was the hecu unit that needed replacement and proposed charging me $3500 for the repair later reducing that to $2500 when i complained that my vehicle had relatively low mileage and complete brake failure was unacceptable and their responsibility. The cost of repair and other expenses incurred (rental car) is completely hyundai's responsibility since lose of braking relates directly to safety recall #114. *tr

1) almost hit from oncoming traffic at a stop light, when i was attempting to make a left hand turn. The signal turned yellow so i tried to turn left before i realized the oncoming car was going to run the light. I took my foot off the brake and hit the gas to make a quick turn to avoid the oncoming car. The car stalled for a second as i pressed the gas into the turn, then kicked into full power, screeching the tires. I thought this was a fluke but his same problem of "stalling" for a few seconds when depressing the brake and hitting the gas at takeoff keeps happening intermittently. This is a dangerous issue. When needing to accelerate quickly from a stop, this car has a seconds gap from hitting the gas to the car moving. I've almost been hit twice because of it. 2) the headlights switch off intermittently when using the turn signals to change lanes or turn. They flash oncoming drivers as i click down to turn them on before the turn, or when the turn signal clicks back after the turn. This problem happens almost every time i drive the vehicle with the headlights on. The lights have shut off completely for about 5 seconds while i was driving down the freeway, impairing my ability to see at night. I had to immediately pull over on the freeway in an unsafe location to turn the lights off, then turn them back on to clear the problem. 3) my vehicle had the brake switch replaced from the 2013 recall. However, pressing the brake still does not shut off the cruise control when driving down the freeway. I have to manually turn it off from the button on the steering wheel. I love this car, but i'm afraid to drive my children in it if these problems are not addressed. This vehicle is unsafe and it is going to kill or seriously injure people. Please investigate these mechanical problems and issue the appropriate recalls. *tr

The brake lights on the 2010 hyundai genesis (and possibly other years/models hyundai vehicles) have various problems with the brake lights failing to work. This is very dangerous not only to the hyundai genesis driver, but also for any driver following behind the car. There has been various factory recalls for the 2010 hyundai genesis brakes including one that causes the brake lights not to work due to a brake switch failure: http://www.Cars.Com/hyundai/genesis/2010/recalls however the particular problem my car and other genesis owners have reported does not have a factory recall for it, even though it poses the some of the same safety issues that the brake switch factory recall had. Http://genesisowners.Com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.Php?T=3269 the root cause is diode that fails which cause the brake lights not to work. (this is different that the brake switch factory recall.) i don't know how many months i drove without having brake lights. My state inspection was in january 2014. A driver that was behind my car informed me my brake lights didn't work in may 2014. I had my car towed to the dealer due to the danger of driving when the car's brake lights don't work. Apparently hyundai knows about the issue (according to the above link) : technical service bulletin 09-be-023, stop lamp z01 diode inspection procedure, appears to describe the location and procedure for troubleshooting of the diode but describes the issue as " . . . Vehicles may experience the stop lamps blinking on and off even when brakes are not applied." why is there no factory recall for this problem? It can cause serious accidents which could lead to fatalities. *tr

Hyundai is having a real issue with their fuel pumps. My car is currently in the shop for its 3rd fuel pump at 120k miles. Then, i was traveling on the highway at approx. 70-75 mph. Without warning, the engine stopped and of course so all of the other controls from the engine. I was turning into the driveway of a shopping center when i was rear-ended by another car. The force of the collision caused both active headrests to launch. The force of the active headrest hitting the back of my head caused a concussion and for two days a loss of all memories going back approximately 4 years. I was hospitalized and stayed one night. Most of my memories have returned but i have absolutely no memory of the day of the accident pre, during, or post accident. I am home now but cannot drive for at least two weeks and i am not allowed to travel on business because of caution about the accident. These headrests are dangerous. Any marginal protection they might provide is not worth the suffering of a concussion and the loss of memory. It could have been worse. What if i had not been able to recover my memory or worse yet, not able to create new memories. For the first day i was in the hospital, i could not remember a single thing i was told no matter how many times i was told. I am being told by hyundai that they cannot replace the active headrests with normal headrests. That is very frightening. I don't want those things in my car. Several months ago when i attempted to brake, the pedal went down to the floor. However, upon stopping the car and restarting the engine, the car appeared to be normal. I called the dealer and reported the problem and was told by the service writer that if it was not "doing it further" and there were no warning lights there was no point in bringing the car in. Today, i experienced a total brake failure; this time i was in a parking lot and the pedal went all the way to the floor and i was only able to stop the car by letting it reduce to coasting speed and shifting into "park". As i was only a few blocks from my house, i was able to limp home, pumping the brake to stop. My husband called the dealership when i got home and was told to bring it over. The dealership is about 4 miles from our house, my husband drove very slowly and found that upon pressing the brake pedal there was minimal braking and then complete fade out of the brakes. He used the parking brake to stop the car when necessary. When the car was examined at the dealership they reported to my husband that the abs module had failed and needed to be replaced. (it is important to note that this failure took place without warning and without any indicator lights, either the abs light or the brake light, indicating that there was a problem.) before filing this complaint, i looked online and found many, many complaints of the exact same problem. Took my car in for servicing and asked them to check my air conditioning unit. No cool air from the system. The technician said a piece of glass and wire resembling part of a tire retread had somehow passed through the grill and damaged the condenser. Thus, freon leaked out over time resulting in lack of cool air. The service clerk said he had heard that this had occurred in the past with other hyundai genesis. Interesting how there is no damage to the front end of the car or the grill. Does not sound feasible that a piece of glass (2 inches by 1 inch with quarter inch thickness) and wire (7 inches) could sneak through grill and hit with velocity to damage a condenser with no damage to the grill. Are grill slats too wide or is there a lack of under carriage protection? We just recently purchased this car. The headlights are more like spot lights instead of flood. At night, the low beam bulbs direct a light down low, and there's a horizon above them, which is dark. It's a horizontal line ahead of you. When you start down a hill, towards the bottom, the dark area completely covers the road ahead. You cannot see anything in front and above you, like the road climbing in front of you. Also, that horizontal dark line moves up and down with the bumps in the road, and almost brings on motion sickness. If we get in a hilly area, that could become possible. The dealer won't adjust the lights higher, because they're in spec, now. This is dangerous, and should be addressed. *js

While driving my 2010 hyundai genesis coupe 3.8l track model, i experience severe problems with the transmission. When shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear whenever the temperature is below 30 degrees fahrenheit the transmission grinds going into gear. Hyundai usa had a tsb about it, and the transmission fluid was changed under warranty. A week later the problem is still occurring. Hyundai has not been helpful in fixing the problem whatsoever since. When it is very cold, the transmission will not allow me to shift into second gear at all, it'll grind and make noise and block me from shifting. When this happened, i had to quickly depress the clutch and let the car roll back down to a stop. There was a lot of traffic this day and i was almost involved in a collision because of this problem. When approaching highway speeds and shifting into 5th gear, the transmission grinds again. This is usually around 50mph and at around 2600-3000rpms. I have to force the shifter into the 5th gear slot. Should the transmission block me from shifting into 5th, as it does sometimes from 1st-2nd gear, this will certainly result in an accident. Again, hyundai motor usa is not being helpful at resolving this issue. Since the transmission fluid change, hyundai will not approve any other warranty related work. *kb

This is a well known problem among the genesis coupe community and hyundai refuses to acknowledge they have a problem. *tr

Vehicle steering wheel has continued to make a loud clicking/clunking noise during turning, primarily counter clockwise. Dealership has replaced clockspring (1st visit), lubricated steering components(2nd visit) and has now denied a "problem at all" per their district parts and services manager. No one is unable to come to a resolution as to why this noise is occurring, or what it causing it to occur to be able to determine if it is creating a driving hazard on the road or not. They are also unable to demonstrate to me that it doesn't pose a driving hazard. Due to the noises the steering wheel makes, i am uneasy driving the vehicle in fear of losing complete steering ability in the vehicle. Dealership, district manager, and consumer relations have been unable to assist in determining if this is a safety hazard, or poor manufacturing. *tr

Car will not accelerate properly in 1st & 2nd gear and tends to want to stall when reaching a certain rpm; car will not go beyond 40 mph; check engine light comes on; unable to determine when the defect is about to occur making the car unreliable and unsafe to drive; defect occurs will vehicle is in mid-operation while driving on road regardless of speed. Defect(s) have resulted in several near collision experiences, since cars behind vehicle have almost rear-ended vehicle as they did not expect the car to decelerate with no brake light indication of the vehicle slowing down and is therefore a danger to drive. Driver unable to safely merge with traffic on major highways as the vehicle does not accelerate properly and will not go faster than 40 mph, making it impossible to merge seamlessly with traffic thereby placing driver and drivers of other vehicles in danger and safety risk. Driver unable to use side-roads as an alternate measure, as car does not accelerate properly and tends to want to stall when pulling off in 1st and 2nd gear resulting in cars behind vehicle almost rear-ending vehicle. Three attempts have already been made to repair the defect, yet defect continues to occur. *tr

While driving my 2010 hyundai genesis sedan i began to feel dizzy and light headed. My heart began to race and my hands became numb and tingly. This also happened briefly yesterday ( 8/1/11 ). Upon exiting the vehicle, there was a very strong smell of gasoline. A friend drove me to the er where i described my symptoms to the doctor on duty. After drawing my blood, it was determined that my co - carbon monoixde, level was higher than normal - 3 times normal. I had been in the car for approximately 3 hours today. When i went to drive the vehicle to a hotel, i had to put all windows down and sunroof open because of the gas vapors. I have reported this to hyundai of north america and they are towing the car to dealership to investigate. *kb

The manual transmission in the 2010 hyundai genesis coupe is very problematic. Very often the gear selection is rejected not allowing the operator to up shift or downshift. Second gear and fifth gear are the worse. Grinding often occurs when shifting into 2nd gear or 5th gear. I was merging into traffic on interstate 495 in massachusetts when my car would not shift into 5th gear. The transmission simply started to grind. When merging into traffic at 50-60mph an operator needs to shift from 4th to 5th and i could not. I had to quickly downshift into 4th gear to try and keep accelerating. Any shifting into 5th gear after approximately 3,400 rpms resistance and often grinding will occur. This can very easily cause an accident, expecting to be able to shift into the next higher gear and not being able to do so. I have taken my car to a hyundai dealer and "they could not replicate the problem". I took the service tech for a ride and the car ground into 5th, and i was then told "this is normal operation of the transmission". Hyundai does not want to remedy this problem, and eventually many genesis coupe owners with manual transmissions will be using lemon law protection to have their cars fixed. *tr

Driver's seat lift motor failed while driving(the seat was not being adjusted at the time) causing it to suddenly drop to the floor. When the seat fell, it landed off of the track and was not secured-the seat was extremely unstable, and could be easily moved forward, sideways, and lifted by hand. Basically the driver's seat was no longer attached to the floor of the car. The part is on order and will be replaced upon arrival at the hyundai dealership in tampa, fl. Courtesy hyundai has the broken part. *tr

I was driving heading southbound on the avenue and the vehicle in front of me braked suddenly and had no time to brake without hitting the vehicle in front of me. I tried to brake the most i could but did not make it so slammed into vehicle in front of me. It was a very hard impact and none of the airbags in the vehicle went off, so due to the whiplash my mouth hit the steering wheel and broke my bottom lip. I had my seat belt on so no other injuries occurred besides my ankle sprain from the jam of the accelerator with the center console. As soon as the crash occurred the car started going into smoke so i was scared and decided to get out of the vehicle before it might blow up. I forced myself out of the vehicle and put the car in the gear of park and no longer than two seconds later that i was out of the car, the car started to head in reverse on its own quickly! I did not even have a chance to close the door since i had just jumped out and went onto oncoming traffic and crossed the median and went across traffic onto the incoming traffic side and did not stop until it hit a wooden fence. This was the first time it had happen that it was on park and went reverse on its own, it was not safe at all! The vehicle was damaged all over and broke the property fence of the public park. Parts are being replaced and the car is in the body shop to be fixed. *tr

Tilt-telescope steering wheel stopped raising, causing it to both block visibility of part of dashboard and limit egress for drivers. Was repaired twice and failed a total of three times. Dealer has replaced module which was reputed to correct problem, and has conferred with hyundai, but it recurs in three to four weeks. There was no incident to report to police nor was there damage.

Since purchased used from a hyundai dealer in 2011 with just 11,123 miles & full warranty, this vehicle has had "intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, intermittent ability to remove the vehicles shifter from the park position, illumination of the esc'(electronic stability control) indicator lamp in the instrument cluster, intermittent interference with operation of the cruise control feature, or intermittent operation of the stop lamps" as cited in campaign 110 released by hyundai on march 29,2013. I have brought it to the dealers service department on 11 separate occasions, for the above listed issue -to two separate dealers- and while both utilized the hyundai warranty to the fullest extent, to replace everything from my radio, to transmission modules, to wheel cylinders, none of these issues fixed the problem. When i spoke to hyundai last week regarding recall campaign 110, i was assigned a case number, but i received a call the next day that my case was being rejected by the regional office. When i brought it to the dealer for the recall repair this weekend, they insisted that they would have to charge me for the visit, despite my complaint being the one listed in the recall.I feel that hyundai should honor their recall and address this problem in my car at their expense until they rectify the issue cited in the recall, despite the faulty part having been replaced through my factory warranty multiple times, and prior my receiving notice of the recall. Hyundai motor corporation should do what is required to get the car they sold me to be in safe operating condition, and they refuse to do so. *tr

Hyundai genesis 4-door. Purchased 10/2010--have had fourteen incidents where when i press on accelerator, there is no reaction or acceleration. Has happened lots when i pull into intersection, press on accelerator, nothing happens, and i pray i don't get killed by oncoming traffic. Finally, the car begins to move, but next time will i be killed??? Dealership had car for one week and couldn't find anything wrong. There's another complaint on the genesis listing this same problem. Help! On incident dates and mileage questions, i just put a number--this problem has happened since i bought the car last fall. *tr

The hood never fit as tight as it should, flopping a bit over bumps but one day i popped it open and the whole thing slid forward from the passenger side. The two bolts holding to the bracket were not there. Since i could not find them on the garage floor, they must have come off in traffic. Dealership replaced the bolts but it still didn't fix the alignment so i had to take it to a body shop. In my opinion and verified by the dealership where the car was purchase -the genesis has pull to the left under normal driving and when accelerating; this becomes very severe if not immediately corrected this occurs at 25 mph to 45 mph. In my opinion this problem becomes extremely severe to the point of dangerous on roads when wet at speeds of 65 to 73 mph. In my opinion this problem is extremely severe to the point of dangerous at all times when at speeds of 75 to 85 mph. Hyundai had a regional technician look into the problem at the dealership. I was informed by the dealership the same problem occurred with him in the genesis. At that point, they removed things i normally carry in the trunk which weigh about 150 pounds in total -after removing these the hyundai regional technician told the dealership the genesis operates within hyundai specifications; and the dealership communicated to me that the hyundai regional technician recommends not putting anything in the trunk and the genesis will operate to hyundai specifications. I feel the same problem of a severe pull to the left occurs if the trunk has things in it or without; although to a lesser extent if the trunk is empty. In addition the steering seems to be most difficult and a bit loose at the 70mph to 85mph speeds. I feel the genesis may be prone to veer into other lanes or oncoming traffic if continual focused attention is not given to steering (or, struggling with steering at higher speeds). I do not feel that using the trunk of a car is any more than usual use. However, hyundai stands behind their regional report and is completely unresponsive to this matter. I bring this to your attention for my own and others' safety.

When starting the vehicle with foot on the clutch, it lurched forward hitting a parking barrier. Dealer denied mechanical causes. From the time i bought the car, it has accelerated on it's own, going to the max in rpms, at random times. I can take my foot off the gas and it will drive itself. When i try to come to a stop, it will accelerate and i have to counter by hitting the brake. When taken to the dealer, they couldn't "replicate" it. When i argued with the man, he said he would honor the warranty when they could replicate it, though the warranty is now expired. I asked for something in writing, he initialed the work order. Also, the front, under the bumper, is way too low and made of weak material, so when i have to go over any kind of dip, it drags, which has caused the piece to break. This also got up into the fender-well, which caused a hazard with my tires. I am stressed and scared of having a dangerous accident. I am considering trading the car in, but worry for the next owner. I no longer trust hyundai. I feel like my safety is not a priority for the company. They do not search for the cause, just send me back out in a defective vehicle. *tr

The front suspension on the car is defective. The car handles all bumps horribly and has "bottomed out" quite a number of times, leading to the cracking and breaking off of the bottom of the front bumper/wheel well components, causing a safety concern at highway speeds. Had to pull the car off the road and stop at a home center and patch it with duct tape. Since then i have asked other owners and have found about similar complaints and problems. I am an adult 53 years old and have never driven any car hard and have never had this happen to me with any other vehicle i have driven. I went online and found this problem identified in numerous discussion groups etc. So i am sure the manufacturer is aware. What responsibility does a manufacturer have in a situation such as this? This car was top of the line and cost $35,000.00. *tr

With electronic stability control engaged, my new hyundai genesis coupe locked the brakes while i was turning into a parking lot. This happened one other time while turning into my driveway. On numerous other occasions the abs has been engaged when making a turn into a slightly raised driveway, but not to the extent that the brakes actually lock; i am able to drive through the braking action. The hyundai field service rep drove my car and was unable to get the brakes to lock, however, on at least four occasions he got the abs to engage while entering a driveway, accompanied by loud grinding noises. He stated that this was "normal operation due to driveway slope angle combined with wheel base and suspension characteristics." he went on to say that he could get every genesis coupe on the lot to do the same thing. Therefore, they felt no repairs were warranted even though i had told them that the brakes had actually locked up, placing me in a dangerous situation. A recent autoblog.Com article noted the severe deficiencies in the hyundai genesis coupe electronic stability control that mirror my own experience. *tr

The 2010 genesis coupe hood is misaligned on the driver side. The gap is about 1/4" wider on the driver side as compared to the passenger side. This allows more air to enter the hood compartment. 2010 hyundai genesis 3.8l v6 w/ premium navigation package (touchscreen): bluetooth connects to phone even when accessory power is off. The following was observed with or without the smart key: 1. Every time a door is opened, or the remote is used to lock the door, the bluetooth gets connected; 2. Once inside the car, the bluetooth keeps connected without starting engine or turning accessory power on: 3. Step out of the car, close the door, and wait a minute or so, the blue tooth disconnects. Cell phone becomes useless in these situation unless i: 1. Turn phone's bluetooth off; or 2. Start engine or turn accessory power on to use car's speaker and mic; or 3. Transmission is difficult to shift at times mostly into second gear. This can cause a rapid deceleration in traffic and i have seen the vehicle behind me do a nose dive hitting the brakes because my vehicle disrupted traffic flow. Entering fast moving traffic is also a concern for this very reason. Dealer has replaced transmission several times with no change in transmission behavior.

One of my automotive forum member experienced a serious sudden acceleration issue with his hyundai genesis 2 door car, 2010 model. The issue was believed to be caused by vdc(vehicle dynamic control software) that hyundai motor in south korea admitted but refused to do any action against this issue. The hyundai car, genesis, can be accelerated suddenly without pressing the acceleration pedal. The engine rpm was risen upto 6,000 rpm without pressing the pedal and the rpm never dropped again. Hyundai r&d center found the car had different size of wheel at the front side. The owner then withdrew the complaint against the hyundai motor inc in south korea. But i want nhtsa need to investigate this issue because other drivers in usa can experience the same safety issue. This might cause fatal accidents if the front tire lose air pressure. The hyundai motor seems to hide this issue without doing recalls. *tr

This is a recurring hesitation problem. I first noticed this when making a turn into traffic. The hesitation is significant. In some cases there is an acceleration pause of 1-2 seconds. This does not occur every time i accelerate but its lack of predictability is a problem in and of itself. I have come close to being rear ended because the car would just not move when i pressed the accelerator. Also, when the car windows are up and the car sits in the sun for a few hours the central nav and communication system over heats and will not function until it cools off (maybe 20 minutes). In the meantime, back up camera does not work, temperature controls do not work and the bluetooth system does not function.

What i had believed to be somewhat of a nuisance problem has now become a very critical problem. A couple of times after purchasing this hyundai genesis coupe 2.0 while trying to normally accelerate, the car virtually died. Acceleration flat spot. Somewhat similar to the old carbureted cars. Very infrequent, however, the other day losing acceleration almost caused a major accident. Very close. *tr

I own a 2010 hyundai genesis coupe. It has multiple problems. The transmission was replaced at 4200 miles and still experiences problems (lurching when put in gear). The paint has had to be refinished, the bluetooth radio function is intermittently broken, traction control does not work on occasion (dash illuminator light indication). I have repeatedly filed complaints with hyundai corporate regarding the traction control issue. After filing the initial complaint and following up 4 times over the course of a month, i have yet to hear back from them. The traction control turns off, and cannot be reactivated (particularly problematic when we've had so much snow). The bluetooth radio issue stems from the radio playing while the phone is connected. I cannot hear the caller, but they can hear me and the radio. The radio should be off when the phone is engaged. Most of the time, i just can't hear the caller but they can hear me. *tr
