• Recall 92731 [USA]: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. additionally, when the ignition is in the 'on' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of park without first applying the brake. this may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  Hyundai motor company (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 accent, model year 2007-2011 azera, sonata and sante fe,2006-2011 tucson, 2009-2011 elantra touring, 2007-2010 elantra, 2008-2011 veracruz, 2009-2011 genesis, 2010-2011 genesis coupe, 2007-2008 entourage, and 2006-2008 tiburon vehicles. Originally, in april 2013, hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 accent and tucson, model year 2007-2010 elantra, model year 2007-2011 santa fe, model year 2008-2009 veracruz, model year 2010-2011 genesis coupe, and model year 2011 sonata vehicles. In september 2013, hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the park position and cause the electronic stability control (esc) malfunction light to illuminate.

• Recall 66511 [USA]: If the clock spring develops high resistance, in the event of a crash, the drivers air bag will not deploy and will not be able to properly protect the driver, increasing the risk of injuries.
  Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 hyundai veracruz vehicles manufactured from december 26, 2006, through march 21, 2008, and model year 2007-2008 hyundai santa fe vehicles manufactured from april 19, 2006 through march 20, 2008. The clock spring contact assembly for the driver's air bag supplemental restraint system (srs) may become damaged through usage over time. The driver's air bag electrical circuit will experience a high resistance condition, potentially causing the driver's air bag to not deploy.

  Hyundai is recalling 3,387 trailer hitch wiring harnesses either included with a trailer hitch or sold as a service part manufactured by thule towing systems and distributed by hyundai for installation on my 2007-2008 santa fe and veracruz vehicles. The accessory trailer hitch wiring harness converter module is mounted to the top surface of the rear bumper reinforcement. Some circuit board components may not have been thoroughly sealed to prevent moisture contact. The moisture may result in circuit board corrosion possibly causing a short circuit.
  this recall supersedes a previous recall conducted by hyundai affecting the same trailer hitch wiring components concerning high current leakage or a short circuit of capacitor c1. (please see 08e016). Owners who have already had their trailer hitch repaired under the initial campaign will receive a second notice from hyundai to have the newly designed harness installed. These vehicles fail to comply with the labeling requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 110 "tire selection and rims for motor vehicles." the black certification label affixed to the driver's side center pillar, incorrectly lists the gross axle weight ratings (gawr).

Note: this recall replaces C0260 (transport canada recall 2016-309). Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: hyundai will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.   Issue: certain vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer wiring harness kit that could fail. Over time, this could result in a short circuit that can cause overheating of the control module. Note: this recall only affects hyundai genuine accessory trailer wiring harness kits that were manufactured by third parties and sold in canada. These kits may have been ordered at the time of a vehicle purchase, or purchased separately from a dealer as an aftermarket accessory. Safety risk: a short circuit could create a fire risk. This risk remains even when the vehicle is parked. Corrective actions: hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to inspect your vehicle to see if it has an affected trailer wiring harness installed. If it does, hyundai will advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a redesigned trailer wiring harness. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

  This recall was replaced by transport canada recall no. 2021-653. On certain vehicles equipped with a 3.3l v6 engine, engine oil can leak onto the alternator, which could affect charging system function and potentially cause the engine to stall and not restart. This would result in a loss of motive power as well as affect power braking and power steering system function, which would unexpectedly increase steering and brake pedal effort, potentially increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will replace the front valve cover gasket and repair/replace the alternator, as necessary, under a special service campaign.

  On certain vehicles equipped with an advanced airbag system, the passive occupant detection system (pods), installed in the right front seat of the vehicle, may misclassify a small stature adult as a child and deactivate the passenger frontal airbag. When the passenger frontal airbag is deactivated, the “pass air bag off” warning lamp will illuminate. This would cause the right front airbag to not inflate in a crash that merits airbag deployment, and may result in injury to the right front seat occupant. The condition will not affect the driver’s frontal airbag deployment. Correction: dealers will reprogram the pods system.

  On certain vehicles, the clockspring assembly for the driver's airbag may become damaged and fail. As a result the airbag may not function as intended, and the instrument panel warning lamp would illuminate. Failure of the driver's frontal airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the airbag clockspring assembly.

  On certain vehicles, the compliance label contains gross axle weight rating (gawr) values that exceeds the capacity of the tires.   The office of defects investigation of the national highway traffic safety administration received a petition letter dated october 10, 2021 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect(s) in the electronic throttle control system in certain model year (my) 2005-2016 kia optima/k5, my 2006-2015 kia sorento, my 2007-2016 hyundai elantra, my 2007-2016 hyundai santa fe, my 2006-2015 hyundai sonata vehicles. The petition was filed as a vehicle owner questionnaire that can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under reference (odi) number 11439675. The petitioners allege the subject vehicles exhibit a range of dangerous vehicle speed control problems including sudden uncommanded acceleration, runaway throttle conditions, surging, stalling and loss of motive power, all due to various defects and vulnerabilities in the electronic throttle control system.This defect petition has been opened to evaluate the allegation and determine whether to grant or deny the petitioners request.

I was driving on the expressway when my vehicle picked up 65 mph. I was pushing on my brakes which didn't do anything, as i was approaching my exit i had my foot holding the brakes all the way which then slowed the car down enough. I got off the exit and was met with a red light and my car accelerated without warning almost causing me to slam into the back of another vehicle. I threw my car in park and it started smoking so i turned the vehicle completely off. Frightening situation as i had my infant twins. May 7 2021

Fuel gage does not work. Fill up car with gas and the tank shows empty for days and the check engine light comes on. Getting new system does not fix this issue. Each day you get in the car it will show a different and inaccurate readying. I have seen many other online complaining about this.

On highway, car would no longer accelerate and went into limp mode causing me to slow to 50 mph and not be able to keep up with speed if traffic. Pulled over, dash lights flashed and car would not restart. Oil had leaked out of valve cover gasket all over the alternator causing the car to malfunction and become inoperable.

I have been having trouble with the breaking system since i bought the car! I have changed the rear breaks roators and calipters at least 3 times in the 5 years i have had this car!! Tl* the contact owns a 2008 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated while driving at a low speed and making a right turn, the front axle and front driver's side lower control arm fractured. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the lower control arm and the front axle fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

I was backing up to turn around and as i was turning my steering wheel i heard and felt very loud pulsing thumps coming from the front of the vehicle. I got out and saw my drivers side front wheel was leaning out from the vehicle. The arm broke of from my wheel also i found out when i had it repaired the axel also broke!! Good thing i wasn't on a highway or driving i or others might have been hurt or worse!!!

It appears that hyundai may be concealing data from nhtsa regarding corrosion problems on its vehicles. What is clear is that hyundai is shirking its safety obligations and will not cover corrosion, regardless of whether it is functional or safety, if the warranty has expired. Based on prior dealings with nhtsa i know that recalls are not limited to the warranty period if vehicle safety is in question. When we contacted hyundai, their excuse for why the vehicle had a massive hole in the undercarriage was that the vehicle is driven primarily in illinois and illinois uses salt on the roads in winter. If i'm not mistaken, more than half of the vehicles in the us are driven on roads that are salted in the winter. This excuse is simply not acceptable and perhaps nhtsa needs to prohibit hyundai from selling vehicles in the northern half of the us if this is going to be hyundai's attitude. I've never had this problem with any other manufacturer.

Luckily there was a fence to hold me until i was able to turn the car off to stop the acceleration. The engine revved and took off even when foot was applied to break with force. I see many other cases of this and yet still no recall. Hyundai takes zero accountability for this problem. This needs to be addressed. My situation was a lucky one and still terrifying. People could reallly get hurt.

Front sub frame is rusting severely. Last inspection was marginal. Inspector said it probably won't pass inspection at the next interval time. *tr

Front sub frame is rusting severely. Last inspection was marginal. Inspector said it probably won't pass inspection at the next interval time. *tr

The gas guage in this vehicle stopped working over a year ago and we have ran out of gas in the middle of traffic when we keep our gas guage filled in this vehicle all the time causing a danger to ourselves and our children someday somebody is going to hit us due to this issue keeps happening in the middle of traffic and the road and interstate. Going down interstate at 70 miles an hour and car shut off put car in nutral and restarted . Then the next day driving to work and car cut off again while driving did same and restarted . Went on line and found out this has ben a problem in these cars for years and am afraid for me and my children s lives

I was getting check system warnings. Then my fuel gauges went crazy and did not register accurately and i could not tell if my gas tank was holding the gas and as much gas as i put in was not registering and once the car stopped while driving and it had gas in it. Apparently per what i've read from others, this is a rampant problem with this vehicle year and model and i think other years too. I've written to hyundai three times and they refused to do anything didn't even answer me. In last email to them i said i'd contact you if they continued to ignore and they did?! This should be a recall as it is dangerous to say the least. My local hyundai dealership wanted $221 to just look at it and told me to contact hyundai corporate to get them to recall this issue. They will not and this is ludicrous. My vehicle has only 76,000 miles on it. I wound up having the repair done not at a hyundai dealership,but by a very reputable mechanic. I paid $540 for this and it is outrageous hyundai refuses to do a recall on this. Can you get them to reimburse for this repair please and likewise for all others affected by this. It's a dangerous issue. How can they get away with this?? It is outrageous to say the least! When car stopped it was luckily on a local street and i was lucky little traffic or i would have been hit stopping while driving! Hyundai does not care! The car jerked on stopping too. Gas gauge saying it's on empty when there is gas in the car when this happens the service engine light turns on

When trying to unbuckle the seatbelt it sticks and you can't get out you have to keep pressing and pressing and wiggling really firm several times to get it to release i'm scared i won't be able to get out one day or what if i wreck and can't get out !!

Only way to know the fuel amount in the tank is to keep track of miles driven and estimate miles per gallon and refuel every 200-250 miles to be safe and not run out of gas and create a dangerous situation. Air bag clock spring causing air bag light to come on. Vehicle was made april of 2008 there is an existing recall for vehicles made in march of 2008 for this exact issue

The fuel gage keeps marking the wrong level of gas. First it went crazy going up and down. After sensors were changed, it stayed at half of tank even when full. Now the fuel system will need to be replaced again because when it reaches a certain gas level, the check engine shows up. Its random issues and all have to do with the pump, and sensors. Been trying to fix this for 2 years and replacing the system seems to work for a few months and then the issues show up again.

While on a highway running at 75 mph my "esc off" light came on as well as my "check engine" light at the same time. As soon as these lights turn on i can no longer accelerate and my vehicle slowly comes to a stop. During this time, everything else including brakes, signal lights, radio and all other features seem to be functional with the exception of the acceleration pedal which does nothing. When the vehicle comes to a stop and i put it into park, the engine seems to hiccup a little bit as it sits until i turn the vehicle completely off and restart it. This morning (11/11/18) i was traveling with my wife and kids on highway i-290 eastbound approx. 60 mph, when our car has started accelerating without me pressing down gas pedal. I hit the brakes, however car was still accelerating and the only way to slow it down was to put it on neutral (i was already speeding over 80mph). When i did it, rpm were at 7000 per min. And didn't go down a bit. I pulled over and turn the engine off. When started back , engine was working at normal level rpm's and reacted to gas pedal movement. I've decided to continue drive to our destination. After few minutes of drive, it happens again! This accelerations were unintended by me and put my family at risk. It's very dangerous and can cause accident and even death. My wife is driving this car daily and she wouldn't know how to handle it if it would happened to her. This should be investigated.

I was driving along and made a right turn into a intersecting road when i encountered loss of steering control. After almost hitting a car i got it off to the side of road and discovered that the engine had just shut off with no warning. Driving up hill put gas pedal to floor to pick up speed and accelertor pedal stuck to floor. Tried to stop using brake and emergency brake. Could not stop var; threw it into neutral and coasted to stop; took to dealer but no problem found. Incident occurred 5/6/18

Under the hood latch inoperative. I pulled the inside latch to gain access to the engine and the hood was free to open. The latch under the hood did not spring back to provide the additional interlock. This was observed in the garage while stationary.

The fuel sensor/gauge reads as empty all the time no matter how much gas is in the tank, this includes after filling up. This causes the check engine light to come on as well. Although this is not a direct safety issue, after researching on line it is clear that this issue has been going on for several model years of this car. If you went by the number of complaints on this site, it might not look like much but an internet search would indicate otherwise. For some people this can be a safety issue due to problems when legitimately running out of gas on a major highway and in traffic without knowing the issue. The manufacturer should not be allowed to have this consistent and ongoing problem with no recourse.

Driving down a road at night and the sunroof suddenly flew off the top of car. I have been driving a rental since it happens and have contacted hyundai corp and finally received a call from them on feb tues 27th but have not resolved what they are going to do about this with me or carstar collision center where my car is sitting now. The consumer stated the sunroof was repaired under the recall, the under carriage had not. The consumer requested to be reimbursed for the rental car. *js

As the same as everyone else, at 70k miles gas gauge stopped working properly and check engine light is stuck on. We are very concerned about not knowing the amount of gas and running out on the highway. Appears to be a safety concern with the vehicle shutting down. Shocked hyundai has not recalled this problem. I have owned several hyundai's but this is the last.

When attempting to accelerate to merge onto highway, the car is unresponsive to the accelerator pedal causing long delay and inability to merge properly. It is a throttle sensor failure that occurs randomly and frequently. Causes a driving hazard and i have narrowly escaped collision due to accelerator failure. Ongoing problem since purchase in 2008.

The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (bentley hyundai, 3805 university dr nw, huntsville, al 35816) where it was diagnosed that the air bag needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue, but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 229,000.

While normal driving down a city road going straight the vehicle will stall without any notice or any change in condition. You loose all power, brakes and steering when this happens and have to bring it to stop with emergency brake and place in park. Then you can start the vehicle once again like it has no issues. This issue produces no engine trouble codes and has happened 3 other times in the 6 years we owned the vehicle. This is extremely dangerous and we never know when it will happen.

On 9/26/2017 at 3:55 p.M. I was involved in a single car rollover accident. I was traveling on hwy 97 in california at approximately 55-60 mph. No more than 10 miles outside the city of weed. I hit something in the road or blew a tire. The car first went left and then right. The breaks felt as though they locked. When the car hit an asphalt curb it went airborne (there were no guard rails) and went into a small embankment. The vehicle rolled but landed upright. None of the airbags deployed. I also believe the seatbelt did not lock as it is supposed to when a crash occurs. I say that because the right side my head hit the roof of the vehicle and i received a large hematoma. Initially i thought it was because the roof had caved in. When i saw the vehicle the next day it was the left side of the roof that had caved in. What also makes me believe there is a seatbelt issue is i was involved in a rollover in 1985 and did not suffer any head injuries as the seat belt kept me tightly in the seat.

A week ago, the red lamp on my dashboard for air bag began to stay lit, while driving, parked, anytime the vehicle was running. Then a few days ago, while my 275 lb son was sitting in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag light stayed lit, saying off, indicating it was not working, despite having a passenger in the seat. Both of these have had recalls, (12v354000) and 11v472000, but i have not received notification to have serviced. One i suspect is because my vehicle was manufactured march 27th, and the recalled includes dates though march 21 (2008) but it is the same problem, so my vehicle should be repaired without cost to me. This is a safety concern for both drivers and passengers in this vehicle. I also have a special needs son, who cannot comprehend safety issues....

The airbag light does not blink, it remains constantly on. Passenger airbag light works according to the light above the radio; it indicates "off" when no one is sitting in the passenger seat and the light turns off when someone sits down. The horn does work, however the buttons on the steering wheel do not work. The buttons on the steering wheel began to not work prior to the airbag light coming on. There is a recall for the clock spring contact assembly under nhtsa campaign number: 11v472000. This recall only includes santa fe's manufactured up to march 20th, 2008. My santa fe was manufactured after on april 24th, 2008. Requesting investigation to extend this recall due to there are multiple complaints regarding this malfunction on the clock spring for the santa fe on vehicles made after the date of march 20th, 2008. Multiple complaints regarding this are found on the nhtsa website with this same malfunction for vehicles after the date of the recall.

Peeling paint on roof gas tank doesn't register if tank is empty or full.

There have been 3 instances where after turning on my vehicle, the power is throttled and i can only drive a couple miles per hour. I ran a diagnostic scan, and obtained the codes P2106, P1295,and P2135. I searched online and found this to be a common problem. There appears to be a technical service bulletin out for this issue (tsb 09-fl003-2). If this is a common issue, should there be a recall? Thank you.

Over the last year, our hyundai santa fe has developed a very troubling stalling problem that has only increased in frequency. The vehicle loses power while driving regardless of speed, often several times in the same trip regardless of distance traveled. It stalls on local, low-speed roads as well as freeway driving. When it stalls, all steering is lost. This is potentially dangerous. A simple google search indicates that this is a known issue among hyundai customers and dealerships and yet i am not able to locate any information about a recall to correct this issue. This is a potentially fatal problem that should be addressed by hyundai. I did contact them. Today, i received a response indicating that hyundai has no explanation for the issue and will offer no assistance to repair it. Their only suggestion was that i contact a local dealership for repair. As i indicated, this is a problem known to hyundai, some of their customers and dealerships. Since nhtsa is the agency overseeing issues of this type, i would respectfully request an investigation into this stalling issue before something tragic happens.

I actually have 2 issues occurring. One of these was deemed to have been fixed by a previous recall (campaign 105/110 - fixed /closed jun 23, 2014). However, my esc off light and abs light are again lighting up. I have (luckily) not yet had loss of engine power or control. The second issue is in regards to campaign 936. I've had the front engine valve gasket cover fixed, along with my alternator replaced (after my husband and i did it ourselves after losing all power on christmas eve in the middle of road before barely coasting into a nearby parking lot where we were able to sort of park out of the way). We changed my oil this weekend, have had no other work done on the car since (except oil changes) and my husband noticed that the alternator is again covered in oil. Between the 2 issues, it is most likely a matter of days (if i'm lucky) before my car loses power in some form and i am potentially in a wreck with my family in the car. I don't know how much the dealership wants to "re-fix" the first 2 campaigns that should have already been fixed, but for just the valve gasket work, it would be at least $500, not including the alternator that will need to be replaced when the car does go out. Apparently the gasket that is leaking this time isn't the front one, it is the rear one. My personal thoughts on this are that if the front one is faulty, then it's not a stretch to get to the rear one being faulty. My hyundai dealership even warned me when replacing the front one that my rear one would most likely need to be done too (for $500+). If the dealerships know, it makes me wonder why the recall didn't include both valve cover gaskets or a new one hasn't been issued for the rear one. Hopefully, both of these issues can be re-addressed. The date below is of first warning lights. The lights come on from park or while driving.

My car has stalled several times this past week without warning or indication that anything is wrong. The vehicle will suddenly stop and lose power completely while i anxiously try to restart it. It has put me at risk with other drivers where i've had to put my hazards on and hope vehicles are able to stop in time so they don't hit me. I've taken it in for service and they can't seem to replicate the problem. The car is a safety hazard and no one seems to be helping me. I found information online about hyundai getting slapped with a class action suit for the same problems i'm reporting, but the suit appears to only cover 2010-2012 models, mine is 2008. I don't know what to do!

I was driving at a low speed, making a left-hand turn when the car lost all power. No brakes, no steering. I was able to get the car into a driveway. I was able to restart . About 1 hour later the same thing, only this time i was making a left-hand turn across a very busy city street.. I was almost hit by an oncoming vehicle. This is very dangerous and will probably sell the car & tell the new owners about my issue. I have not taken it to a garage, as the closest hyundai shop to me is an hour away. I do not feel safe driving that far.

After turning right to enter an on-ramp for the highway, the turn signal (now in neutral position) starting making the fast clicking noise. In addition, smoke started coming out of the turn signal stick and you could smell (what appeared to be) electrical burning. This continued for 20 miles until i got home and began to research if this has happened to others (which it has). I am worried of a fire danger along with the annoying non-stop noise. Is there a recall on something like this if others have also reported it?

Hyundai's slave cylinder is a faulty part known about online and in mechanic shops. It has failed twice in 65,000 miles and caused additional damage. It recently failed while driving as the vehicle slowed to turn and shifted to accelerate again. The clutch was damaged by this part and we had a $2,000 bill. There was nothing wrong with the clutch prior to this and the dealership even informed us it was damaged by the slave cylinder. Hyundai doesn't consider the slave cylinder "part of the powertrain warranty" and is denying our claim for reimbursement.

I was on the high way i changed lanes and when i did i needed to accelerate to change lanes. After changing lanes i had to hit the breaks to slow down, the break seemed to act like a gas pedal. The car would not slow down the breaks would not slow the car it accelerated to 80mph. I was not hitting the accelerator by mistake. There was nothing stuck under the pedals. I believe it was the throttle positioning sensor,tps. I looked this up on the internet there are many instances of this happening with the same make and model vehicle. This is a serious safety hazard i thought me and my unborn child were going to die. I have yet to contact my dealership however as far as i am aware there are no recalls on this vehicle. And there should be! The car has 104800 miles roughly. The car accelerated to 80 miles per hour on its own prior to that i was going about 55 miles per hour. It asked for this information on the next part of this form however it was not allowing me to type it.

When the vehicle is filled up with gas the fuel gauge goes to zero and the engine service light comes on and the codes generated are P2067, P0463 and P0464. At some point the gauge begins working properly again but the accuracy of the gauge is in question. There is a safety concern since the vehicle could run out of gas at any time leaving the user stranded in bad weather or in a dangerous traffic situation. This problem is not isolated, judging from similar complaints on the internet, it appears that the parts used for the fuel level indication are unreliable and a recall is needed to resolve this safety issue. The problem occurs at fill up and driving has no effect on this issue and has been happening to my vehicle over the last couple of months but seems to be getting worse as time goes on. .

On a trip this past weekend, i experienced an alarming situation. I was driving 65 mph on a highway, when the fuel gauge suddenly registered empty after my having filled the tank only 40 miles previously, and the check engine light came on. I immediately exited the highway, stopped, and called the dealership and talked to a mechanic, who said the likely explanation was a faulty fuel sensor. While we were talking, the needle began to rise and fall. When i determined it was not immediately dangerous, i continued my trip. The gauge eventually returned to normal, but the problem reappeared the next time i filled up; again, the gauge eventually began behaving normally, and the check engine light went out. This morning i took the car to the dealership, and they confirmed the faulty fuel sensor. Cost to repair was $612 ' an outrageous amount. I decided to decline the repair and just track my need for gas from the tripometer. Still this could be a dangerous situation if the gauge were showing adequate fuel but the tank was really empty. Hyundai should issue a recall.

My fuel gauge in the car show no fuel at time and then 1/2, 1/4 or zero tank, check engine light is on, i have had the check engine light checked and was advised that it is the gauge in the fuel tank.

Low fuel light stays on regardless of fuel level. This is an ongoing complaint on this model and needs to be recalled for the safety of drivers. The gauge has been moving periodically but now has stayed at a constant "empty state" with the warning light on. Luckily we were able to fill the tank. We now are going to move it the tank from using g the trip miles.

Fuel gauge problem: when filling the car, the fuel gauge in the car will show empty, empty light is on despite filling the car with plenty of gas. Additionally, in 2009 my car stopped suddenly while we were on a bridge in 4 lanes of traffic. The fuel tank had to be pulled and replaced. The fuel gauge has become erratic. It goes to empty even when full. Will sometimes pop back to partially full. Has caused me to run out of gas when on the highway when i thought i had enough fuel left. I have found nearly 200 similar complaints on line. Problem started at about 60,000 miles and is ongoing.

Had problems with the gas gauge being erratic and my 2008 santa fe, hesitating when trying to accelerate. Had the fuel pump replaced at an after market shop that i have always used on on my vehicles, in april 2016 ($707.00) and appeared to fix the problem. Here it is feb. 2017 and are experiencing the same problem, but this time we were driving and the vehicle just died and could not be restarted. I hope it's not the fuel pump again. Can't find a recall for this problem.

The fuel gauge does not read correctly unless the tank is 100% full. Even then it occasionally will read incorrectly. When filling the tank it occasionally shuts off as if full despite not being full. This is a major issue because it is impossible to tell how much gas is in the tank at any given time which is a safety concern when driving long distances.

Fuel sensor malfunction

Fuel level sensor failed at 65,000 miles. Fuel gauge oscillates, no way to know how much fuel is remaining. Significant danger of vehicle cutting off while driving because fuel tank empty without driver being aware. Other automakers have issued recalls for this problem; hyundai needs to fix this known, potentially dangerous issue.

While accelerating to merge with traffic the engine starting making a strange noise. It continued to run and the noise decreased, and sometimes even quit. The next day the noise was back and while driving down a hill the engine died and my wife was able to coast onto an exit ramp. I was able to get it restarted and drove it to the dealer. The dealer stated with the knocking sound and they found metal in the oil it would need a new engine. I could not afford the over $7,000 estimate so i loaded the car on a trailer and took it home to repair myself. When i dissembled the engine i found one of the connecting rod bearings had spun and all the main bearings had significant damage consistent with metal debris on the bearing surface.

1) fuel tank gauge is inaccurate. Starts to drop rapidly after driving 75-100 miles and empty fuel tank light comes on after ~125-150 miles. When i refill the tank, it is only half empty. Normally, car will drive 270-320 miles before empty. 2) check engine light comes on and off. Nothing seems to be wrong with the car(have had it checked.) 3) esc light comes on and off; sometimes at the same time as the check engine light, sometimes by itself. I have had it checked, no problem; and reset. Goes on - off again a few days later. These events have been occurring over the last 6 months, approximately.

The fuel sensor(s) and/or the fuel gauge on my 2008 have failed. This has caused my fuel gauge and "range" before empty gauge to fluctuate and give a false reading. I have done some research on this problem and it seems that there are a huge number of similar complaints. This is a potential safety hazard as stalling out in heavy traffic is a possibility. I am curious why hyundai has not accepted responsibility for this and recalled these car for repair.

Driver's side sun visor broke from its socket while driving on the highway. The visor hung by the wire for the light. This is a well known defect. It is dangerous and should be addressed by the manufacturer. I was able to jury rig it back - very simple and easy; however their neglect of this is dangerous.

The fuel gauge started behaving erratically at 75000 miles. The fuel level sensor can suddenly drop to empty, then come back to 1/2 full and then to empty. It cannot show fuel level properly. This is serious hazard issue as owner cannot correctly tell fuel level while driving. My vehicle has had a fuel gauge that would move up and down while car is still. Today the check engine light came on with a code P0464-fuel level sensor. The fuel in vehicle is at half and the gauge would go all the way to empty (with empty light coming on) then it would go back to half and move every now and then. The vehicle is at 83000. So far the the gauge is somewhat working but is very frustrating knowing that this can be a $500 repair since it will involve the gas tank. This can make for a bad situation if the gauge completely fails.

Fuel sensor does not work when idling or driving! Fuel gauge shows empty when full. Digital display does not show distance range. A real hazard to not know how much fuel is in your tank. This is a basic need in an auto or an aircraft. This basic need should be the manufacturer's responsibility. The many blogs and forums on this issue show repairs of from $300 to $900 for fixing what shouldn't need fixing. I'd hate to have my wife or daughter stuck on some road after running out of gas. If you can check the online forums for validation and have hyundai recall this safety issue it would be wonderful.

I've been noticing my mileage is slowly declining and the check engine light just came on the other day. I've noticed my gas hand sometimes goes down to make the light come on then it goes back up. My 2008 santa fe with 109,000 miles suddenly shut off on me when approaching a stop sign. The stop sign was on a slight turn and i never realized it until i had no power steering and saw all the lights lit on the dash. I put car in park and it restarted with no issues. Later that day i went to start the car and engine made a loud clunk sound and car shook for a second. I decided not to drive it that day. It has been 3 days since the first shut down and so far the car has been running like normal. Called hyundai and made note of my complaint but didn't seem to know about this issue or so maybe they are not at liberty to say if they have. They never gave me an answer except to take it to a dealer to see if they can diagnosis the problem. I see recall was put out for the 2010-2012 model years but not for older models.

My 2008 hyundai santa fe began having issues with the fuel gauge over a month ago. Every time i fill up the tank, the gauge will go to "e" and the "low fuel" light comes on, despite a full tank. At times the meter would starting moving up towards "full" but then bounce around. I understand it's close to $!000 to get this fixed - but i have read about so many other hyundai santa fe uses with the same issue that i believe a recall should be in place. Currently i'm just driving locally and i just fill up every time i take the car out, but on the highway for long trips that is very dangerous. Very surprised there is not a recall with the number of complaints about this.

Took my car to a two mechanics who both said there is a gas leak in the evaporator of the emission control system. I read online that this issue is common with santa fes and i believe the company should issue a recall and get this dangerous issue fixed.

While driving on a city street (approximately 35 mph), my car suddenly displayed the "check engine" light as well as the "ecs off" indicator and at that same time, i was no longer able to accelerate and my car slowed to a stop. I pulled off to the side of the road, turned the car off for a few minutes and then restarted with the same results. When i restarted, the "ecs" indicator was no longer lit, but the "check engine" light remained on until the deceleration occurred again and then both lights were illuminated. When i searched the internet for what could be the cause of this problem, i found that many others with this same make, model and year have experienced similar issues so i thought it was best to file a complaint.

The check engine light came on and the gas gauge was not working properly. On 7/27/2016 i took the vehicle to the dealership and they replaced the fuel senders. On 9/9/2016 i took the vehicle back to the dealership because when the gas tank was full, there were very strong fuel fumes inside the vehicle. The maintenance rep stated that they checked it out and made sure everything was sealed properly. He also stated that it was probably the fuel tank purge valve for when the weather is hot the gas will expand. In eight years this has never been an issue. Now it is november and there are still gas fumes inside the vehicle. I am now taking the vehicle back for a third time. The fumes are so strong that nobody can sit in the back seat of the vehicle. Even when the vehicle is sitting in the garage overnight, there are strong gas fumes present.

Takata recall my 2008 hyundai santa fe has paint that chipped away above the driver side, right above the windshield. The paint still continues to remove itself from the body in chunks. The issue began about a year ago. And i do not expect paint to remove itself with any rust/ rock chips in the area of paint missing. The suv has 136,800 miles on it, but paint should not be coming off in chunks. I looked online and other individuals had a similar issue with their hyundai. It's not just a problem with the santa fe. It's also sonata's, elantra's and other hyundai models. The missing pearl white paint now shows bare metal and is now showing signs of surface rust.

While at a stop in a construction zone, my foot was on the brake, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated into the vehicle in front of me. Although my foot was planted hard on the brake, the engine continued racing, and it felt like my car was going to push his car down the street! I shifted into park and turned the car off. Luckily there was only $4,000 worth of damage to my car, and no one was hurt. I refused to drive it, and had it towed to the dealer. They said the computer showed no malfunction, and it had to be driver error. Three months later, it did it again to a lesser degree, in an open area. I turned the car off again, and it was fine until yesterday. It has been 4 months since that last incident, but this one even was worse than the first. Only thing is, now i know to put all my weight on the brake, shift to neutral and turn the car off as fast as i can. This one frightened me so badly, i will not drive it again. It is going to sit at the dealer until they find out what to do. I cannot in good conscience drive it, sell it or even trade it in until i know it is safe! Every time it happened, the car was on a city street, stationary, and heading straight. The engine revs up so loud, it sounds like an airplane! Yesterday i could tell the people in the car stopped next to me heard it and looked at me! I have owned this santa fe since it was brand new, and people tell me it looks like a new car. I keep up with the recommended maintenance and always take it to the dealer for service. Until last july, it has been an excellent car. The accident i had with it was the only accident i have had in 50 years of driving! Please give me some ideas on what to tell the dealer to replace, repair or disconnect. Thanks for your help!

Hyundai dealer said my ball joints were bad, $750.00 for repairs, hyundai has recall i was not notified. Drivers air bag illuminated, going in for repair friday cost unknown. Again i was not notified about recall. I have to pay for repairs because i was not notified about recalls.

Fuel guage reads empty when at least half full.

Fuel guage shows false reading, engine light comes on when tank is filled and shows empty reading. Guage will start rising after many miles (one hundred or more). Fuel guage will drop to empty. Car is stationary when filling, but giving false readings when moving anywhere. We never know when we are going to run out of gas. This is a safety issue and should be recalled!

When i am driving, both freeway and city driving, the car will stutter slightly and then the esc off light comes on along with the check engine light. When this happens i lose acceleration and have to pull over, turn my car off, wait a minute or two, and then restart the car. The esc off light goes away and i once again have acceleration but the check engine light remains on. The problem often repeats itself during the same trip, sometimes 30 minutes later, sometimes just 2 minutes later. The stop lamp switch was replaced during the recall campaign 09v122 when the same problem was occurring. A few months ago this started again, it is all the same issues as i had before the stop lamp switch was replaced during the last recall. Because i lose acceleration with no warning and quickly fall to 20mph and below, i have to quickly pull over to the side of the road and do my best to avoid an accident which is difficult when you are losing momentum.

My mother purchased a 2008 hyundai santa fe, awd 2.7l v6 model brand new in 2009. Her fuel gauge failed at around 110,000 miles approx. I noticed other people complaining about the same issue...So i thought i'd mention that her fuel gauge also quit working! She took it in to get fixed, and i believe it was a pretty costly job! Maybe with everybody putting their heads together, this issue can get more attention and possibly lead to a recall. Thanks!

Check engine light stays on. Fuel gauge will read empty even after just fueling. Fuel gauge will occasionally read a random level then drop to empty within seconds. Obd codes states fuel sensor errors.

This pertains to repair cost of $850.56 for my 2008 hyundai santa fe fuel gauge that was not reading the correct amount of fuel. I believe this issue pertains to manufacture's defect and hyundai should initiate a recall. Additionally, my hyundai only has about 58,360 miles to have a major repair cost of $850.56.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The independent mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

Like so many others, my fuel gauge is completely non functional. I have run out of gas in the middle of heavy traffic and now just fill the car up weekly to avoid issues. This is clearly an engineering issue given the frequency with which it occurs in this vehicle.

After a period of time where i noticed the fuel gauge acting erratically (occasionally widely swinging) the check engine light eventually illuminated. Dealer service found code P0464: "inspected cluster for any loose connections or damage, no issue found with cluster or wiring. Removed the sending units and found send units out of spec when moving by hand and ohm senders. Replaced both sending units and cleared codes." *tr

My check engine will come on and the fuel gauge sensor will move erratically. I can go put gas in the car and it will still say empty. I do not know if i need gas or not. Very unsafe when travelling with kids. I keep pitting gas in because i'm afraid i'll run out. Had it checked by a mechanic and it showed the reason why the check engine light is on is because of the fuel gauge sensor. Real pain. This needs to be recalled and fixed before it causes serious bodily harm to someone. The vehicle can be stationary or in motion it doesn't matter it will still go haywire.

At 140,000 miles, the fuel sensor fails to show the correct amount of fuel. The indicator moves from half to empty in an instant. After re-cranking and driving a bit, the fuel needle will then slowly return to showing under half a tank. The range indicator does not indicate the correct range due to faulty sensor. I have to watch the trip mileage to know the amount of fuel i have. All problems start at about a 1/2 tank. Check engine light is on. Calling dealer but i know the answer after reading the complaints. I don't really have the $$$ to fix.

The fuel level sensors in this car have failed. Regardless of the amount of gasoline in the tank, the fuel gauge reads that there is no fuel, and the check engine light remains "on" at all times. This is a safety issue because it can lead to a situation where the driver runs out of fuel (since the fuel gauge is not accurate) and the car stalls in the middle of traffic. That has not yet happened to me, but it could. Based on a short internet search for others who have had a similar issue, and discussing the issue with local automotive repair shops, this is a common problem for this vehicle. I had my santa fe serviced on 04/05/16 for fuel gauge sensor,was not reading appropriate gas level. I have only 72000miles and somthing like this should be a recall.I was told that happened because of the age of the car,which i don't believe.We owned 8 cars before sant fe and it never happened. The fuel level sensor failed at around 55,000 miles,which resulted in the driver being unable to tell how much fuel was in the tank. Fuel transfer unit and fuel pump assembly had to be replaced.

The contact violently depressed the brakes and maneuver to the side of the road. After few minutes, the accelerator pedal released and functioned as normal. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure reoccurred twice. The approximate failure mileage was 94,000. The vin was not available.

While in motion on the city street going 45 miles per hour the electronic stability control shut off. Lost the ability to accelerate and couldn't do anything else with the vehicle. Had to put it in park, shut off the engine and wait for 2 mins then restarted the car and it worked fine. But after driving a while longer the esc shut off again. Had to repeat the process of turning off the engine and restarting the car again. While making a turn a little whike later it shut off again. Took it into the shop and they couldn't figure out what is causing the problem.

Gas gauge sensor not reading level of gas in the car. Online i read many others with the sante fe, especially 2007-2008 year with this problem. I only have 80, 000 miles and it is not reading the appropriate gas level and fluctuates. The gas engine light is on and a mechanic read the code that it is the gas gauge sensor. I have read accounts online of the car reading gas at zero and turning the car off. I am now terrified to drive my car and have filled the gas up every day. The engine light remains on. When the mechanic wiped out the code i filled up the tank and the next day drove over an hour and then the gas read just above half full and the engine light came back on. I can't believe this has not been issued a recall when it is very dangerous to have a car just shut off on the highway. Do people have to die before a recall is issued?

When i depressed the accelerator the pedal went down to the floor on its own and no amount of braking could bring the car under control. At the time i was traveling at 55mph and the car shot to 70mph. Finally after pumping brakes several times the pedal popped up with an audible sound. Happened the next day as well same thing. I have read that the throttle position sensor is the culprit and the dealerships cite driver error, and floor mats, which is what i was told. I am attaching a letter sent to hyundai and the nhtsa. Happend the following day as well.

My engine light came stays on and then shuts off. My gas gauge keeps moving up and down. Once i fill my gas tank completely the gas will show filled and engine light will go off and then within an hour the engine light will come on and the gas gauge goes to empty and the fuel light comes on showing the car as empty. Then within 20 minutes the gas gauge will move back up and the gas gauge will shut off but the engine light stays on. This will happen constantly with the gas gauge going up and down.This occurs while the car is stationary and in motion on city street or expressway. My mechanic basically told me it's the gas gauge but he is still investigating.

The gas electric float doesn't work it a 'll ways shows i have no gas i have to fill ever 2 days just so i don't run out. But have gotten stuck in the side if the road 5 times since problem happened. Haven't gotten it fixed due to mo get issues for it.

When driving and you hit the breaks, the vehicle attempts to stall, or if you use the high or low breams the radio shuts off and the gps turns on or you loses it all, while on high way way if you use your high or low beams the engine starts to stall then keeps going causing the vehicle behind you have to break quickly to avoid hitting you as you loose all power for a matter of seconds this happen while moving or parked, i mhave installed two new alternators in the past three weeks and the problem coniinues

The fuel sensor fails to show the correct amount of fuel. The indicator moves from full to half empty to full to 1/4. The range indicator does not indicate the correct range either. It will show 320 miles remaining and then immediately move to 100 miles and back to 300...Etc.

The vehicle so far has had two instances of uncontrolled acceleration, not just sudden but while driving and performing a passing maneuver or need to accelerate quickly the transmission will get stuck on a gear, pressing the brake or shifting to manual mode, attempting to shift up or down or back to d or n will not stop the acceleration. I just kept my foot on the brake, put hazards on, turned off the engine (left key in accessories) and then coasted to the shoulder. The minute i turned the engine off i gained stop control, prior, mashing on the brake wasn't stopping the car. Once i coasted to the side of the road, i waited a minute or so, carefully restarted the car and things were back to normal. The first time this happened the transmission seemed be stuck on 5th gear, but when i shifted from d to manual and back the acceleration returned to normal. The second time this has happened, the transmission seemed to be stuck on 3rd, the initial description above is about the 2nd instance. Taking the vehicle to dealer and will avoid rabbit starts or initiating any rapid acceleration, which seems to be where the transmission or some sensor is getting bad data. My guess it's the throttle body positioning sensor. Although i would assume that if the computer/transmission experience a bad signal or loss of signal from a sensor that the default action would be to shut off... Not lock in a gear with no means to stop other than shutting off the engine.

My wife and i were driving through the city the other night. There was a lot of traffic and as we approached a green light at the intersection the car dies and comes to a stop in the middle of the intersection as the light was changing. Luckily we weren't rear ended or t boned. Come to find out we ran out of gas even though it read half a tank. Thanks hyundai for trying to kill us.

Defective fuel sensor. Driving on the highway fuel gauge began fluctuating erratically. Check engine light came on. Had to stop due to unsure if i had a fuel leak or if something would happen to the engine. After checking there was no leak i continued home even though the check engine light was on and fuel gauge showed no gas. I have researched and found thousands of people on the internet with the same issue with this make and year of vehicle. In new york state my vehicle would not pass inspection with the check engine light on. Repairs cost me over $800. Vehicle only has 72,000 miles. I feel hyundai should compensate the consumer for an obvious defect when they have to make a repair that is not related to wear and tear of the vehicle.

2008 hyundai santa fe, 78k miles. Fuel gage reading starting bouncing around. Showed half full on a freshly filled tank. Eventually check engine light came on. Error code P0464 (fuel level sensor 'a' electrical circuit was intermittent for a predetermined period of time.). Fuel sensors required replacement. An inaccurate fuel reading is a safety concern, just like any other issue that can lead to unexpected vehicle shutdown. The numerous reports on the web concerning the failure of the fuel sensors in the 2008 santa fe suggests strongly that a recall is warranted.

Fuel level sensor fail. The gas gauge drops from full to 1/4 tank to 3/4 tank. The "range" display will go from empty to 300 miles left to 79 miles left. All over the place. It will say your full and you are empty it will say your empty and you are full. This happened while you are in motion on any roadway at any speed and also when you turn the car off and back on. While accelerating to get on the highway the vehicle rapidly accelerated without pressing the gas pedal. When this occurred the pedal started going to the floor. Prying up on the pedal with your foot did not have an affect. This has happened twice and the dealer has looked at it twice and has advised that they could not find a problem.

I also have the fuel leveling sensor issue on my 2008 hyundai santa fe limited. The check engine light came on and the code indicated a failing fuel leveling sensor. This is accompanied by fluctuation in the fuel gauge and makes it difficult to determine how much fuel is left and when the code is cleared will come back on randomly. It appears to happen to a lot of these vehicles between 60,000 and 120,000 miles. I think this should be a recall or class action suite as it is an estimated $800 repair and will often fail either before the warranty expires or within 20,000 miles outside the 100,000 mile warranty.

Check engine light came on. I then noticed when the low fuel light came on and i filed the tank it only took 12 gallons instead of the usual 15-16. I called the dealer and they immediately stated it was the fuel level sensor. Causing both issues. It must be a common issue. $500 quoted repair. Now when the light comes on and you fill it takes between 10 and 12 gallons. Not sure if that means there was 4-6 in the tank or something else is restricting the volume of fuel you can add. Check engine light comes on and goes off intermittently. Also the low fuel night may come on and the gauge shows nearly empty and then it might go off and show 1/4. Is it empty or is it a quarter. Mileage on the car about 63000.

I exited a toll and proceeded to enter the nj turnpike, suddenly, the steering became tight. I noticed that the power steering was out, along with the engine. The engine just turned off. Thankfully, no traffic, i proceed to pull to the feeder of the entrance. Put car in park, and the car restarted. I am not sure what happened, and fearful that this could happen, with trucks behind me, unable to pull to the side and risk serious injury. No check engine light warning was indicated. I recently had two knock sensors replaced at the hyundai dealership.

Fuel gauge has been faulty and check engine light would turn on and off after replacing what i thought was a bad battery one month ago. One week ago while driving, all lights on dashboard came on (battery, check engine, abs, esc...), engine started to rev, electrical and power steering failed, and car had to be turned off in the middle of the road and towed home. This has happened twice while driving now. Issue is from a failing/failed alternator caused by oil leak from front valve cover. This problem is identical to issues with '06-'12 veracruz, recall #121.

Gas fumes and smell are in the interior of the vehicle. This is most prevalent when the vehicle has a full tank of gas. This occurs both when the car is in motion and when it is garaged. The dealership service department could find no cause but this has been occurring for approximately 18 months. I am concerned with the safety and health aspects of the gas fume build in the interior of the vehicle.

The issue began about a month ago during a long interstate trip. If the fuel gauge reached the 1/4 tank mark, it would plummet to empty. As the car ran, the gauge would rise up and fall again repeatedly. Sometimes when the car was started (even with a full tank), the gauge would never rise above "e." thankfully, the car never stalled and always started. I just had it serviced today. Both sending units were replaced and was told by a hyundai dealer that they keep these parts (fuel sensors) in stock due to the high frequency of calls they receive from other owners with this same problem. Surprised there has been no recall issued yet!

I filled up my tank to full one evening. After which i came home and parked for the night. The next morning i was leaving and noticed my low gas light came on and it was on empty. This had happened presviously to me but correctly itself so i continued to drive. While driving my check engine light also came on. Eventually the tank read 1/2 full and the low gas light turned off. However the check engine light is still on. This is not ok. I take great care of my vehicle and should feel safe driving in it with my children. I'm very disappointed with hyundai.

The gauge on the fuel tank has stopped operating and doesn't accurately show how much fuel is in the tank. After filling up the gas tank the empty light comes on intermittently. This happens randomly when the car is in motion. The fuel gauge moves up and down and the check engine light has come on and stays on.

Check engine light came on and the fuel gauge began jumping all over the place. It would say i had 88 miles to empty and then jump back up to 130. The next day the check engine light was off and then the next it would be back on again. Had a mechanic check the codes and it was a bad fuel sensor. I took my car to the dealership and they replaced both fuel sensors for $416. If i hadn't gotten it fixed, i wouldn't have been able to pass emissions testing which is mandatory in my county. Also, i wouldn't have any clue how much gas i had and could've been stranded.

Lost power steering, without warning. Luckily i was going slow crossing an intersection, and stoping. After that it was a losing tug of war with the steering. Mechanic found rack lines rusted and leaking. If i was traveling at any speed, i may have lost control. Very dangerous! Please help prevent an accident or death.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,000.

My wife indicated that when she got on the ramp to rt. 80 , the car completely shut down. She also stated that she almost had an accident since she had no brakes nor power steering. This occurrence has been reported to the national highway safety by a number of owners yet you continue to ignore the problem which could be attributed to oil dripping from the valve cover on to the alternator. I guess you're waiting for some accidents to happen before taking action....Maybe a few deaths resulting from a crash. Very proactive!

In july/aug of 2015 my gas gauge and miles-to-empty indicator started going crazy. I would fill the tank with gas but the gauge read empty. While driving, the miles-to-empty indicator would constantly, rapidly change from 200 to 40 to 68 to 113 to whatever so i couldn't tell how much gas i had left. I took the car in for an oil change at hyundai on aug 8, 2015 and asked them to also look at the gas gauge. He said that there was nothing they could do until the engine light came on. The engine light finally came on at the end of november 2015 so i took the car in 12/10/15, and they said they had to replace two fuel sensors in the gas tank. When the problem initially started, i had about 64000 miles on the car.

While i was driving along at approximately 25 mph in my hyundai santafe the steering became very difficult and there was no throttle response. I stopped the vehicle completely in the middle of the boulevard street and put the vehicle in park and restarted the engine. I was very frightened during the incident that someone was going to run into the back of my car and that the vehicle would stop again before i got home. I refused to drive the vehicle again and followed my husband in another vehicle as he drove the faulty vehicle to the dealer the following day. The tech rep we spoke with at the dealer casually said the throttle positioning sensor was bad and if we wanted it repaired it would cost about $400. I couldn't believe they would let me leave the dealership with this malfunctioning part. The symptoms are the same as the general motors ignition switch problem. I looked it up online and this seems to be a common problem with the hyundai santafe. Where is the outrage? Where are the recalls? Is it going to take many deaths and 10 years to correct this problem like gm ignition switch problem? Does somebody have to die before this is taken seriously? Hyundai management refuses to discuss this problem. I sincerely hope i can appeal to your sensibility and force this korean company to address this dangerous problem. *tr

When the gas tank is less than half full, the fuel gauge displays tank as nearly empty and the amber low fuel light appears. The check engine warning light also comes on. The fuel gauge swings back up to nearly half full, drops down to 1/4 full, then drops down to almost empty, then swing back to half full. About 3 months after this problem started, the fuel gauge remains near empty with the amber low fuel light lit. When i fill up the gas tank, the fuel gauge is once again accurate until the tank goes below 1/2 full. However, the check engine light remains on at all times and can only be cleared by a mechanic. I've had my mechanic clear it twice. This is a fuel sensor issue with the two senders in the gas tank. I was going to have this repaired by having the fuel pump assembly replaced but found out it would cost $1000. I can't afford that so i'm stuck. I'm going to have to reset the odometer every time i fill up and make sure i fill up the tank every 300 miles. I've done my research and this is a known, widespread issue with the 2008 hyundai santa fe vehicles. I saw many complaints about this issue filed on the nhsta so this agency is well aware of the issue but has chosen not to recall the santa fe for the 2008 model year. I don't understand this: this is a safety issue as well as a gross design and manufacturing problem with this vehicle. We bought this vehicle used with no knowledge of this. The fuel gauge started behaving erratically a little over a year after we bought it in may 2014, which would be around late july 2015. He first sign of a problem occurred after i filled the gas tank in late july 2015. That was the first time the check engine light came on even though the gas tank was full. I had my mechanic clear it. This same thing happened about 6 weeks later. After that the erratic fuel gauge behavior i described started occurring.

While driving on the highway the fuel propulsion system light came on and the fuel gauge read empty. However, based on mileage and the last time i had filled the gas tank, i knew i should have close to half a tank. The next morning the gauge read close to half a tank. While driving the fuel gauge marked once again empty. As a driver, i had no idea how much gasoline the car really had. I took the car to the dealership and they retrieved the code P0469: fuel level sensors a and b failure. Hyundai dealership/warranty did not cover the cost of the replacement, even though the car only had 40, 228 miles. I had to pay $600.00 for the replcement of the two fuel sensors.

Fuel gauge stopped working and service engine light is on. Fuel gauge now reads empty even if tank is full. This is a safety issue as amount of gas in tank is unknown and should be recalled by hyundai.

After several hours of normal highway driving, the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power as the engine computer entered "limp home" mode. Pressing the accelerator had no effect. Diagnosed as throttle position sensor failure. This problem occurred several times, with an engine restart clearing the problem temporarily. While these incidents did not result in a crash, they could easily have, depending on traffic circumstances.

Fuel gauge started intermittently going up and down, then stopped working completely. While driving in the left lane on i95, at 70 mph, the vehicle stalled running out of gas almost causing a crash, due to the loss of all power.

I lost power steering and power brakes while stopped at a stop sign going up a very steep grade. I was unable to shift into park so that i could turn my car off. I had to lay on the brake with all my weight to keep from rolling backwards into cars behind me. There were no warning lights. After a minute, which felt like much longer, i was able to shift to park and turn my car off and back on. The second time i lost all power, was a couple months later. I was going about 40 mph on a curvy hilly road. I was unable to steer, accelerate, decelerate, or apply the brakes. There were cars behind me and i was terrified i would end up off the road or heading into oncoming traffic. The vehicle finally came to a stop when it didn't have enough momentum to make it up a hill. I was able to shift into park and turn the car off and back on. Both times my infant was in the car with me. Thank goodness both of us were unharmed, because we could have very easily been hurt or hurt others. I was in a several thousand pound vehicle which was out of control. I had it towed to the dealership the next day as i refused to drive it. They didn't seem to think it was a big deal and said i needed a new alternator. Luckily, i had purchased an extended warranty which covered the alternator replacement.

Just as the other noted complaints, my check engine light has been coming on and off and my fuel gauge indicator has been extremely temperamental. Rarely it'll show the correct level - usually once i fill my tank, my fuel gage shoes i am below empty and flashes that i have no miles left to drive until my tank is empty. I have resorted to tracking my mileage with the trip function because as others have discovered - to repair it costs an arm and a leg due to expensive labor from where the sensor needs to be accessed to replace it, under the driver seat.

The fuel gauge does not accurately read the amount of fuel in the tank. It constantly moves from empty to full. The problem is known to be a faulty fuel level sensor. Expensive to repair. Hyundai should own up to this problem and recall affected vehicles. Nhtsa won't do anything about it because no ones gotten killed yet due to this issue.

Filled tank and read empty with low fuel light on. The next day while driving the more i drove the more the fuel needle went up until it eventually read full and the low fuel light went out. Now usually when it gets down to about 1/2 tank needle will drop to empty, fuel light will come on, range indicator will read----and now the check engine light comes and goes.

Hyundai safety recall campaign no. 103: in relation to the above recall, my vehicle did not qualify due to it being manufactured on 2 june 2008. My clock spring for the driver's air bag has become inoperable as indicated by the air bag light illumination and dealer's diagnosis. The dealer states since there in no recall, i must pay for this part and the diagnosis because i have surpassed the 5yr/60k warranty. This is a safety issue and i am surprised it is not covered for free. As seen with the above recall campaign, i was a few months shy of having it replaced for free regardless of mileage. Is there a way to have my vehicle qualify for the recall?

Sun visor on drivers side drops down into vision of driver without warning. Other years of hyundai have a recall for the same defect and this year continues the same problem.

After 141,000 miles the engine threw a rod, i had heard a clicking noise for a while but was assured it was a normal engine sound after taking it to the dealer. I change my oil regularly and have my slips, the engine completely failed while driving. In the last year and a half i am having to replace approximately one low beam headlamp per month.

My gas gauge stopped working correctly, going up and down but never passing one half a tank and the check engine light remains on all the time. The mechanic said the seats would need to be taken out to get to the sensor, that it was probably bad and would need a new one. I tried to estimate how much gas i had in the tank by using the odometer and resetting at 0 for a gas fillup till i got the car in for service. The tank would kick the gas back at half a tank so i was getting only 8 gallons in. On tuesday i ran out of gas on a highway going 55, which was dangerous, as there was a truck behind me and he had to swerve into the median to avoid hitting me when my car died. I was towed to the mechanic. The mechanic checked bytaking the seats out and putting in a new sensor. He filled the gas tank up (19.9 gallons) and yet with the new sensor in, the gauge still reads only half a tank and the check engine light is still on. Something else is wrong and i see that many other people have this safety issue with this car and it has not been recalled or resolved effectively. Does someone have to die first? The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the clock spring assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.

My santa fe awd 2008 was bought in june 2009 and now has ~99k mileage. I had four or five similar incidents with my santa fe starting on 4/21/15, which led to significant power loss and speed loss of the car on the road. The first time, i was driving on a local road at ~25 mph. Suddenly i felt the car lost the power and began to slow down. I stepped down on the accelerator, but the car could not accelerate (the speed dropped to ~10 mph). I saw 3 system indicator/warning lights on: the esc off(electronic stability control) and check engine indicators had a steady light and the awd system warning light was flashing. I pulled off to the side of the road, shut off the car, waited ~1 minute, and then restarted the car. The check engine light stayed on, but the other lights went out. Then i drove the car to continue to my job. The 2nd incident occurred on my way home. The same scenario except that i was driving at ~40 mph at the time. The sudden power loss caused the car speed quickly dropped to ~10 mph and probably led the car behind mine to make a sudden stop to avoid a crash. Again, i pulled off to the side of the road, shut off the engine, and then restarted the car with the check engine light staying on. The other times i was on the cresent city connection (bridge) in the center lane. I had to work my way over two lanes to turn the vehicle off to restart to continue on my way to or from work. After the 5th time, i did some research online and found an article stating that this problem was on the tsb (technical safety bulletin). Maybe someone somewhere should be aware of more than one vehicle having this problem.......

We have the same issue on our 2008 santa fe as described by many other drivers here. Check engine light goes on and off and the fuel gauge up and down. I'm surprised there hasn't been a recall for this issue yet, since there are so many comments/complaints here.

After looking up this issue on the internet, there are multiple complaints about this same issue for the exact my make, model, and year vehicle that i am making the complaint about. This issue is consent if i am moving or stationary. The only way to ensure i do not run out of gas is to fill up about the 250 mile mark to make sure i do not get stranded. My red air bag light has been on for about 2 months. I took it to the hyundai dealership and they wanted $1500. My issue is i did nothing to cause the air bag malfunction so why should i pay this extremely high cost. (i'm retired) i also spoke with the hyundai regional manager and they offered me $200. This is a safety hazard and i want hyundai to fix this!!! I took my car in for the air bag recall in 2012, so something continues to be wrong with the air bag system.

If the vehicle had not been warmed up for at least 15 minutes, the failure would occur. The contact stated that the failure would only occur in cold weather temperatures. While driving approximately 35 mph, the emergency brake and esc suddenly activated and the speed reduced to 10 mph. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. An unknown dealer in jamesville, wi was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000.

Fuel gauge has failed, leaving no indication of fuel remaining in vehicle. Could cause crash due to vehicle running out of fuel.

It happened in the morning when i started the engine, the fuel gauge showed the gas tank empty, the check engine light was on, and the empty gas tank light was on, even though the gas tank was filled 2 days before and the range on odo keeps flashing without number shown. After driving about 2, 3 miles, the fuel light was off, and the fuel gauge had move up just a little above empty line. Monday morning 3/16/15 when i started the engine to go to work, the check engine light was off but the range on odo still flashing. I filled up the tank and the gas gauge level read empty. Continued and has been on empty. Sometimes it will rise gradually to correct level. And when you turn off engine then it goes back to empty. I find this to be dangerous because i don't know if the car will stop. I have read many others that have had the same problem. A recall is in order to correct this problem for the safety of all. *tr

Check engine light is activated and fuel gauge reads empty at all times. Constantly adding fuel as there is no way to accurately estimate amount of fuel in tank. This is a safety issue as running out of fuel is a constant issue for anyone driving these vehicles. This is a known problem with this model year hyundai santa fe as documented. Dealer estimate for cost to repair is $900 as both fuel sensors would be replaced at one time.

Fuel gauge fluctuates a lot . When i fill tank it says empty. Then it changes while i drive to 3/4. It moves all over. Never a correct reading. *tr

After fueling my gas tank completely 16 gallons of gas i began traveling on freeway only to have my gas gauge plummet to empty and digital range went blank. Since then i am unable to tell how much fuel i have. The reading fluctuate rapidly. I am terrified that i will run out of fuel on a busy expressway or during severe cold weather due to risk of harm and or injury. I was told by hyundai dealership that sensors are faulity.

Fuel level gauge is registering as empty when completely full and then fluctuating from full to empty tank when driving. Check engine light code is registering as faulty fuel level sensor. Unable to determine how much fuel is actually in the tank and feel that this is a safety issue if unsure how much gas i have. 2/05/15, turned right on manhattan blvd and normal accelerating, eased up on pedal but engine still full throttle. Applied brakes but still kept accelerating. Approaching a traffic light, shifted to neutral, turned into a business parking lot, and turned off the engine. Started the engine after 3 or 4 seconds still full throttle,turned engine off. Started the engine after 4 or 5 minutes and everything was normal. On 2/05/15 contact hyundai on 1-800-633-5151 they filled out a report, case no. 7640349, and also recommended i have the vehicle towed to dealer. 2/05/15 vehicle towed to dealer. Hyundai dealer could not find a problem. Hyundai dealer was requested to run more extensive tests by corporate office. 2/10/15 extensive tests completed and found no problem. I did not contact hyundai, 1-800-633-5151, on 1st occurrence on 6/25/14, just took it to same hyundai dealer and filed a compliant via e-mail with nhtsa. Hyundai did state on 2/05/15 they had no record or recall for this problem! 2/11/15 car ready for pickup. Dealer stated problem duplicated several times with installed aftermarket floor mat jamming throttle and car was safe to drive. See below:. I removed the after market floor mat. I am driving with a 80% believe 20% do not believe confidence level that the floor mat caused my two problems. *tr

Our gas gauge shows empty, and the fuel light stays on, all the time. This occurs even after we fill the car up. This occurs whether the car is stationary or running. We have to track our fuel level by keeping track of the mileage. Also, if we turn the car off when fueling, it will not turn back on. We have to try over and over again until it turns on. We have found that if we leave the car running while fueling, it usually stays running; however, a lot of times, the car stops running and then, we struggle to get it started again. This is our 2nd santa fe (our first was a 2004, with which we never had a problem). If hyundai doesn't do something to fix this problem, this will be our last hyundai. This is dangerous on many levels, and as we all can see, there are currently about 350 other 2008 santa fe owners who have posted on this site with the same problem, this is an obvious safety defect, and needs to be recalled. Also, i noticed someone else mentioned they change low beams about once a month. We too, are having the same problem. We have changed more headlamps in this car than we have in all of our cars combined over 40 years.

This vehicle has developed a speed sensitive "whirring" sound while the transmission is engaged. We initially thought it was a tire noise, but did not go away when new tires were installed. The dealership told us it was the drive belt rubbing against the cover, but further investigation by another repair facility found no excessive wear on the belt, and no indication of contact with the cover. The noise is actually coming from the transmission, and is exactly as described in recall 102 which applies to 2010 models. I plan to start a fight with hyundai over this repair as the transmissions are the same on the 2008 models as the 2010.

I was driving to a stop light on a down hill slope with my whole family in the car when all of the sudden my car turned off. All at once my check engine light came on, my battery light came on, and i couldn't get the car to re-start. I turned on the emergency flashers and at the middle of a busy intersection i tried to restart my car but nothing happened. A few moments later i tried again and it started but it wouldn't let me accelerate almost at all (through an intersection!). There was also a clicking sound coming from the front of the car. I pulled into a parking lot, afraid if i was going to be able to drive anywhere, turned the car off, waited about five minutes, restarted it, successfully. I let it idle for a while unsure what else to do. I proceeded to drive home with no other incident. The clicking was off and on the entire drive home but has since gotten quieter. *tr

Fuel gauge is freaking out. The gauge is fluctuating erratically and the fuel range is impacted as well. A big concern when you have a wife a children that are traveling in the car and you don't know your fuel situation. Please recall this item immediately. *tr

When you fill up the gas tank, it register empty and the check engine light comes on. Sometimes the gauge will read correctly and then it goes back to empty. I have to always fill the car up because i don't know how much gas is in the car. This is annoying. It very expensive to fix. This is the third hyundai i've bought (two santa fe's and one sonata) and this car is the worst model i bought.

We stopped to get gas on a road trip and after filling up the fuel gauge showed 1/2 full then empty and the fuel gauge would spin down and up instead of slowing decreasing with driving. How does a fuel gauge stop working on a 6 year old vehicle? There have been many complaints that this should be looked into for a possible recall. Dealer says it is $500 to replace sensor and it is dangerous to drive and not know when you could run out of gas. Very disappointing.

Late last year (2014) my gas gauge suddenly showed empty (with empty light coming on) on my 2008 hyundai santa fe gls 2..3 l engine. In addition, the 'check engine' came on and stayed on. I took vehicle to my mechanic, who told me the fail codes related to the a and b sensors in the fuel tank not functioning properly. The cost of the repair was estimated at around $700.00. My vehicle is no longer under any warranty. I asked if this defect is causing environmental problems or other problems that could cause engine damage, etc. And he said no. I said well, i could live with this by zeroing out my trip indicator and keeping track that way, knowing my approximate mpg. (i live in wisconsin on the lakeshore and we are under mandatory emissions testing due to the polluted air coming up from illinois and being trapped by lake michigan.) he told that next year (current 2015), my vehicle would not pass emissions because the 'check engine' light is on! Now as registration is due in november, i have to get it fixed. First off, i believe this is a safety issue because if i forgot to zero out my trip odometer and ran out of gas in tin-buk-two, i or my wife (who doesn't have a concealed carry permit) could be stranded in a dangerous area. Secondly, i get screwed on not being able to register my vehicle due to a non-emissions related issue.

Leaking oil from front valve cover and causing alternator to fail, just like all the other santa fe and varacruz. *tr

After engine start and while driving any speed the battery light and seatbelt light on the dashboard flashes intermittently. I searched this online and it looks to be an electrical charging issue, namely the alternator is bad. I searched more and found the reason for this is the front valve cover is leaking oil and dripping onto the alternator causing it to malfunction. A recall has been made ( #121) on the 07-12 veracruz for the same issue. *js

The gas gauge is not working properly and it seems to be due to the fuel sensor. It constantly fluctuates up and down. It causes the check engine light to be on consistently. This seems to be something that a lot of hyundai customers are dealing with per websites that i have read. *tr

The car accelerated while brake pedal was being depressed and would not stop accelerating. Car had to be thrown into neutral and key turned off. All four brakes were burnt up. Thankfully no one was injured nor was there a crash. The repair shop could not find any issue on their diagnostic machine other than the rpm's rising even though brake was being applied. So they know it happened but just don't know why. Called hyundai to document this and their only response was there was no recall and i should take it to a hyundai dealer for diagnostic study. Sure - spend more money with hyundai for them to tell me nothing. This problem needs to be addressed prior to the loss of 30+ lives. *tr
