• Recall 106055 [USA]: If the tpms light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Chrysler group llc (chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 chrysler town and country and dodge grand caravan vehicles manufactured march 20, 2014, to april 22, 2014, and 2014 jeep wrangler vehicles manufactured march 21, 2014, to april 22, 2014. Due to a software error, the tire pressure monitoring system (tpms) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 138, "tire pressure monitoring systems."

• Recall 2019016 [Canada]: Airbag
  Issue: on certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety risk: if the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective action: owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the passenger-front airbag inflator replaced. Note: the canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

• Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation # EA21002

  From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). • Seat belt buckle bracket failure investigation # PE19008

  On july 17, 2019, nhtsas office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation (pe) 19-008 after receiving three vehicle owner questionnaire (voq) reports alleging the drivers side seat belt buckle separated from the seat frame, rendering the seat belt non-functional. The voqs involved model year (my) 2015 and 2016 jeep wrangler (jk platform) that were configured for right-hand drive (rhd) use. On august 8, 2019, odi issued an information request (ir) letter to fca.The scope of the ir included all jk wrangler produced for sale in the u.S. (both left- and right-hand drive), and amongst other things, requested any reports or allegations of drivers seat belt bracket failures on these vehicles. In its review of fcas response, odi determined that approximately 1.7 million jk wrangler were produced from my 2007 to 2018, about 16,000 of which were configured for rhd. Odi notes that the rhd wrangler are typically used for rural postal delivery which often experience a more severe duty cycle. Also rhd jk was was not produced in my 2007.As explained in the ir response, fca identified three distinct populations of jk wrangler concerning the drivers seat belt bucket bracket; specifically the my 2007-2018 lhd (~1.7m units), the my 2008-2010 rhd (4,563 units), and the my 2011-2018 rhd (11,463 units) populations.Fca provided details on the designs used in each of these populations, identifying specific differences deemed pertinent to the strength and durability of each unique bracket design. Fca further reviewed its analysis of the complaint and warranty data identified under the ir, and noting that it had not identified any allegations of bracket failures on the lhd population, and only one allegation on the my 2008-2010 rhd vehicles. By comparison, fca identified 24 allegations of bracket failure for the my 2011-2018 rhd jk, including two reports duplicative of the voqs. Neither the fca nor the voq reports allege an injury or fatality due to bracket failure. Based on this analysis, fca decided to conduct a safety recall for the my 2011-2018 rhd jk population. On september 30, 2019, fca submitted a defect information report initiating nhtsa safety recall 19v-680 (fca no. Va6). Under the recall action, fca will replace the drivers seat belt bracket on my 2011-2018 rhd jeep jk wrangler. The repair will be conducted free of charge.In view of fcas recall action, and its explanations of the scope of that action, odi is closing pe19-008. Odi will continue to monitor the non-recalled rhd, and the lhd jk wrangler for evidence of seat belt bracket failure and will take further action if warranted.The three voq reports cited above can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under the following reference numbers:11190251, 11218472, 11231639.

• Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation # EA19001

  The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit.The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems.The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low.While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events.Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring.The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations.In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.Additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.

The other day i was changing the fluids in my transfer case and i noticed that the cv bolts were broken and coming out my jeep is not lifted nor is there larger tires on it. If these all snapped the possibility the drive shift my fall out. If you contact me immediately i won't proceed with fixing the drive shaft if not i'm replacing it tomorrow.

Takata recall. The contact owns a 2014 jeep wrangler. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 19v018000 (air bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Dealer reported crack in oil cooling housing. A burning oil and coolant smell starting in 2017, while under manufacturer warranty. I was concern that jeep would start a fire and began parking outside. I replace the oil cooler because i noticed a ticking sound. When i went to the dealer they informed the the engine is a total loss and needs to be replaced. Cylinders 1 and 6 failed. $8000 to replace the engine with a refurbished unit which addresses each of chrysler’s failed 3.6 liter motor. If this manufactures oil cooler and other engine issues, do not need to be addressed, i don’t know what ever would need to be addressed.

It started with a small oil leak that turned into a big oil leak coming from the oil cooler. The high the temperature the more oil that would come out. This oil is mixed with coolant as well. This is not safe because you never know when it's going to crack and they will not cover under warranty or extended warranty. This can be a real safety issue because you can lose oil pressure which can cause engine to fail.

Leaking oil filter housing. It's a known problem and so widespread across jeeps that there's a national shortage of the part. I can't even get it fixed. Oil and coolant are leaking everywhere. It's a danger to my family and the environment.

Noticed an oil spot in the driveway. Took the jeep to my mechanic who informed me that this is a cracked oil cooler. He said that this is the third one he has seen and the second in 2 weeks. On the first one he did he said it took 6 weeks to get the part and that his customer drove 6 hours to get the part. There is a severe back order on these parts. I have now been waiting for 3 weeks for my mechanic to get the part. He was told by chrysler that the next expected delivery would around may 3rd. That will be 6 weeks of not being able to use my vehicle. That is not acceptable. I have done some research on the internet and i am finding that this is a common problem that chrysler has known about since 2014. It started to happen to vehicles with less than 5,000 miles on them. There should be a recall on this part. Or at least redesign and make enough parts to cover the demand. Why has this been allowed to happen? $1000 to repair this problem.
