Known Recall Investigations
  • Engine failure (wrist pin) investigation # DP22002

The office of defects investigation (odi) received a petition dated april 29, 2022 requesting investigation of engine piston damage attributed to improperly sized wrist pins in the m274 engine found in the owners 2015 c300.The petitioner reported that their my 2015 mercedes c300 vehicle lost power while driving at highway speeds accompanied by shaking, white smoke from the exhaust, and a burnt oil smell. Subsequent diagnosis at the dealership identified a cracked piston. The petition alleges that all mercedes-benz models equipped with a variation of the m274 engine should be included in the evaluation and cites mercedes tsb li03.10-p-060916. The petitioners vehicle is equipped a 2.0l m274 de20la engine calibrated to run on 91 octane or higher gasoline and contains diamondlike coating (dlc) wrist pins. None of the other mercedes models referenced in the petition contain this engine configuration. Thus, the scope of the petition will primarily focus on those vehicles that contain dlc coated wrist pins like those in the petitioners vehicle. This defect petition has been opened to evaluate the allegations raised and conditions reported in the petition and to determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11450360.

  • C300 wrist-pin allegation investigation # DP22002

In a letter dated april 29, 2022, mr. Sergio betancourt (the petitioner) submitted a petition attributing engine failure of his 2015 mercedes-benz c300 to “wrong sized wrist-pins” and asserted that these were prevalent on all mercedes-benz models (including the metris minivan, glc300, and c300) equipped with a version of the m274 engine. The petition cited mercedes technical service bulletin (tsb) li03.10-p-060916 (meant for the 2015 c300) and postulated that the “wrong-sized wrist pin” would allow the piston to “wiggle in the cylinder as it would move up and down”. In addition to the mercedes-benz tsb, the petitioner enclosed a service center repair estimate and images of other online submissions discussing the m274 engine. In the incident that prompted the petition, the petitioner reported that the vehicle lost power and shook in response to accelerator application during highway driving, followed by white smoke from the exhaust pipe. The petitioner stated that the subsequent service center visit led to a cracked piston diagnosis. The service record from this visit prescribed an engine teardown to localize the failure and characterize any resulting engine damage and listed a number of repair options that included replacement of one piston, four pistons, or the entire engine long block (depending on the level of damage suffered). Tsb li03.10-p-060916 (“tsb”) was first released on february 27, 2015 and pertained to engine code 274.920. It cited the following complaint condition: “clattering/rattling or knocking noise from the crank assembly of the engine when cold at oil temperatures up to approximately 50°c mostly heard on engine deceleration” and listed the cause as under analysis. The tsb gave further instructions on the collection of information and discouraged the replacement of any components. On september 21, 2015, tsb version 4 introduced engine build clean points (march 27, 2015 or april 20, 2015 depending on the engine plant); cause: unfavorable tolerance of the piston wrist pin resulting in enlarge end float of the connecting rod in the piston; and remedy: compare the complaint vehicle sound to an enclosed sound file under various operating conditions and then if verified, replace the pistons, connecting rods, and bearings, using updated pistons that include updated wrist pins. A review of the petitioner’s vehicle service history indicates that this labor operation was performed in march of 2016. In its november 22, 2022 response to odis september 28, 2022 information request (ir) letter, mercedes stated that the limited number of potentially affected wrist pins could contribute to an unintended noise, but pose no motor vehicle safety risk. Odis analysis of the field data furnished with the mercedes ir response and within its own vehicle owners questionnaire (voq) database support this assertion, finding no relationship between wrist-pin conditions cited in the tsb and engine failure or loss of motive power. Broader searches of both data sources for engine stalling related to engine durability identified no trends meriting further investigation. After conducting a technical review of the petitioner’s submissions, the vehicle history of the petitioners vehicle, mercedes tsb—li03.10-p-060916, information provided by mercedes-benz in response to the agencys information request, and data within its own files; nhtsa has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to pursue a formal investigation. Accordingly, the agency has denied the petition. Nhtsa will continue to review any new information or incidents as they are submitted to the agency. A federal register notice (frn) further detailing nhtsas reasons for denial of the petition will be published in the future. The petition and its attachments can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under reference odi number 11450360.

  • Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation # EA21002

From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede ea15-001, which remains open.

  • Front roof panel detachment investigation # PE21001

Odi has received seven complaints alleging incidents of front roof panel detachment while driving in 2015 mercedes-benz c-class vehicles. The subject panel is the fixed glass panel that extends across the width of the roof forward of the sliding roof panel. The detachments occurred at speeds ranging from 60 to 65 miles per hour. Each of the incident vehicles had received a service replacement of the front roof panel prior to the detachment incident. The replacements were performed to address customer concerns with the appearance of the polycarbonate panel (e.G., crazing or delamination). On average, the detachment incidents occurred approximately 23 months after receiving the service replacements. The subject vehicles for this investigation are all 2015 mercedes-benz c-class vehicles that have received service replacements of the subject front roof panel. The office of defects investigation has opened this preliminary evaluation to evaluate the scope, frequency and consequences of the alleged defect. The reports cited above can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under the following reference numbers:11352686, 11351629, 11349158, 11341541, 11324100, 11311591, 11222127.

Sunroof clips are snapping on many w205 2015 mercedes c300 models causing the panoramic roof to come loose potentially flying off the car while driving this has the potential to hurt many people. Mercedes claims there is only a recall for models up to 2011 however hundreds of thousands of later model vehicles have the same issue. I read an article saying they recently opened a recall for the later models but my vin isn’t covered. If the 100 pound panoramic roof flies off while driving on the highway at 70 mph it can definitely kill someone. Please address my concern i cannot afford to come out of pocket for mercedes defect and lack of help.

My daughter was driving at freeway speeds, when she heard, what we now know, is a portion of the sunroof panel flapping and break off. There was no warning, no instrument indication, and assume the broken part was a safety hazard to vehicles following. We took her vehicle to fletcher jones mercedes in newport beach, but they're hesitating about repairing or reimbursing costs, due to the pending nature of the nhtsa recall #21v197.

I was in middle line on i-5 sb san diego doing 40-60mph when my car suddenly started to shudder, shake and smoke came from the exhaust. The car lost power and the check-engine light came on right away. I was told that cylinder 3 lost pressure, that the engine wall was damaged and that possibly the piston and wrist pin are cracked. My car has only 66k miles and the mercedes benz dealership is telling me that i need a new engine that will cost $19,000. After doing some research i have found out that i wasn't the only one with this issue. I have listed an example here: "here is a major issue with the 2015 m274 mercedes engine regarding the wrist pins. Mercedes has issued numerous internal service bulletins about the issue. The engines were manufactured with wrist pins with too much tolerance that slap against the piston when operating that could lead to premature engine failures. There are hundreds of complaints on online forums of premature engine failures (pre 100k miles)." mbusa requested from me proof that the car was serviced on time and with the correct parts. Once i was able to prove everything they told me that they were sorry but i still need to pay for everything. They did offer a "10% good-will discount". I wish they told me when i was buying a car that after every 6th oil change i will need a new engine. Please make mercedes make this right and fix the affected cars the right way.

Driving down the interstate and half of the stationary roof panel dislodged. Luckily no accidents occurred due to the malfunction. The other half is still loosely attached and i am worried it could cause an accident if it detaches . I have emailed and called headquarters as well as my local dealership and no one has the ability to fix the problem and cannot confirm if i choose to pay out of pocket, that i will be reimbursed. There is a recall and it’s #21v197. At this point i want some sort of solution so i can ensure the safety of myself and those driving around me.

I would like to bring to your attention a potentially dangerous design flaw in my 2015 mercedes c300. That design flaw resulted in me having to cut the seat belt off a passenger, my wife, in order to free her from the car. I will also explain in detail the admittedly rare circumstances that led to this potentially dangerous incident. In may 2021, my wife underwent outpatient surgery of her left shoulder. After the surgery a nurse brought my wife to the curb in front of the hospital, where i had pulled up my car. The nurse and i assisted my wife with her transfer from the wheel chair into the passenger seat. My wife was wearing a sling supported by a spacing pillow on her left arm. The nurse then proceeded to fasten the seat belt around my wife. Since the nurse’s procedure is of importance to this incident, i will explain it in detail. After my wife was seated, the nurse unwound the passenger seat belt entirely and inserted the belt tongue into the buckle so that the lap part of the seat belt went properly around my wife’s lap. To protect the fresh surgical site from external forces, the nurse then placed the part of the seat belt that is normally worn across the chest behind my wife’s back. Had the seat belt been placed properly across my wife’s chest, it would have been forced to pass over her left arm, which was tied to her body by the sling and bandages. It was thus not possible to wear the chest part of the seat belt properly over the chest but under the left arm. Lastly, the nurse allowed the fully extended seat belt to wind up onto the pretensioner. Upon arrival at home i wanted to take the seat belt off my wife. To this end i opened the passenger door, and gently pulled on the seat belt in order to slacken it enough to get the seat belt off her. However, i could not get any slack. Per instructions in the user manual, i opened the belt buckle but the belt was tightly wound around my wife's body. Ultimately, i had to cut the belt with scissors.

The car has intermittent starting issues more noticeably during eco start / stop process. When car does an eco stop at red light or stop but it is unable to restart consistently (10-20% fail rate). All dashboard lights come on and car is stalled. Car can roll if on a hill. Car can be restarted by turning car on and off manually. Only error code is P1CE200 but the manufacturer suggested steps do no solve problem. Battery, auxillary battery, starter, voltage dip limiter, battery sensor, starter relay were replaced. Delear unable to find problem and says all software is up to date.
