  Chrysler (fca us, llc) is recalling certain 2012-2021 ram 3500, 3500 cab chassis, 4500 cab chassis, and 5500 cab chassis vehicles. Incorrect information in the service and owner's manuals may cause the flanged lug nuts to be over-tightened, which could result in a broken wheel stud and possible wheel separation.

Dealers will also inspect the vehicle's wheel studs, replacing them if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on november 30, 2021. • Recall 134788 [USA]: If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.
  Chrysler (fca us llc) is recalling various dodge, chrysler, and ram vehicles equipped with kidde plastic-handle or push button 'pindicator' fire extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. • Recall 127832 [USA]: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
  Chrysler (fca us llc) is recalling certain 2016-2017 ram 3500 cab chassis with a gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 cab chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 ram 1500 and 2010-2017 ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in park may cause the brake transmission shift interlock (btsi) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of park into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

• Recall 99453 [USA]: A failure of the tie rod assembly may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Chrysler group llc (chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 ram 2500 4x4 and 3500 4x4 trucks, 2008-2012 dodge ram 3500 4x2 cab chassis, and model year 2008 dodge ram 1500 mega cab 4x4. The left tie rod assembly may break.
  chrysler notified owners on january 16, 2014 that dealers would inspect vehicles and replace the steering linkage assembly, if necessary. On or about february 27, 2014, chrysler ceased its recall remedy program due to parts quality concerns, and then re-initiated it on or about april 14, 2014. In july 2015, and under a consent order with nhtsa, the company agreed to offer owners three options for remedying their vehicles: perform the original remedy, offer to repurchase the vehicle at the fair market value plus 10%, or offer an additional incentive offer towards the purchase of a new dodge, jeep, chrysler, or fiat vehicle. • Recall 2021336 [Canada]: Wheels
  Issue: on certain pickup and chassis-cab trucks, the owner's manual and service manual list the wrong torque specification for the wheel nuts. As a result, some trucks may have had the lug nuts over-tightened during servicing. This can damage the wheel studs and, over time, they could break. If this happens, a wheel could separate from the truck. Note: this recall only affects trucks equipped with dual rear wheels and flanged lug nuts. Safety risk: a wheel separation could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. A wheel that separates could also hit another person or vehicle. Corrective action: fca canada will contact owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect and replace the wheel studs, as necessary.   Issue: this recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by vitro automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: this is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the motor vehicle safety act. Safety risk: glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective actions: the company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. • Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation # EA19001

  The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit.The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems.The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low.While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events.Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring.The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations.In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.Additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.

• Chryslers execution of 13v-528 & 529 investigation # AQ14003

  Rmd opened this audit query (aq) investigation in order to better understand and evaluate chryslers process(es) for timely and efficient execution of its safety recall campaigns, including its oversight and management of its parts division mopar.Prior to opening this investigation, rmd had raised concerns with the company related to its execution of two safety recalls, 13v-528 and 13v-529, both of which involved safety defects that could cause the involved vehicles, fca’s heavier dodge ram trucks, to lose steering control suddenly and without warning.Specifically, rmd inquired about the availability of parts for recall repairs, by email and phone on january 15, 2014 and february 19, 2014, due to the volume of complaints it was receiving from owners alleging parts scarcity and parts restrictions. Fca steadfastly denied it had placed parts restrictions on its dealers to manage issues of parts scarcity.Fca shared material showing it had uncommitted stock of parts available for its dealers. Nevertheless, consumer complaints of lack of parts continued.Rmd made independent inquiries tosome dealers tobetter understand the conflicting claims between owners alleging lack of ability to repair their defective vehicles due to lack of parts, and fca’s information showing availability of parts.Dealers informed and provided documentation to rmd on february 21, 2014 and february 25, 2014 showing fca had, in fact, put into place parts restrictions and, further, had in some instances canceled dealerships’ back orders for parts.In addition, during the course of its dialogue with dealers, rmd discovered that fca had notified their dealerships on february 27, 2014 to return the recall remedy parts over quality concerns, and had therefore effectively canceled its safety recall program without notification to nhtsa. Rmd issued a request for information (ir) on october 21, 2014.The company failed to respond to a number of the questions rmd asked that required it to produce specifics surrounding the repairs and parts ordering process with the recalls, including a question about whether a dealer order for recall parts could be canceled and under what circumstances.

• Totally integrated power module failure investigation # DP14004

  In a letter dated august 21, 2014, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the totally integrated power module (tipm) installed in chrysler suv’s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that tipm defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On september 25, 2014, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened dp14-004 to evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision. Odi analyzed complaint data provided by cas as well as complaints submitted to odi from consumers. In total, there were 296 complaints submitted by the petitioner in the original petition and five supplements, including 271 complaints related to the subject vehicles equipped with tipm-7. Approximately 3 percent of cas complaints are related to vehicles equipped with tipm-6 and odi’s review of these complaints did not identify any safety defect trends. Odi conducted a detailed review of complaints narratives submitted by cas and consumers including careful analysis of vehicle repair histories, warranty claims obtained from the manufacturer and any available customer assistance inquiry reports (cair). Analysis of the field data indicated that my2011-2013 jeep grand cherokee and dodge durango vehicles exhibited significantly higher complaint rates related to fuel pump relay (fpr) failures than other subject vehicles. In a september 3, 2014 letter to nhtsa, chrysler submitted a defect information report (dir) identifying a defect in the fpr within the tipm-7 which can result in a no start or stall condition in approximately 188,723 model year (my) 2011 jeep grand cherokee (wk) and dodge durango (wd) vehicles manufactured from january 5, 2010 through july 20, 2011 (14v-530).In a february 24, 2015 letter, chrysler submitted a second dir expanding the scope of the fpr defect condition to include an additional 338,216 my 2012 through 2013 jeep grand cherokee vehicles manufactured from september 17, 2010 through august 19, 2013 and my 2012 through 2013 dodge durango vehicles manufactured from january 18, 2011 through august 19, 2013 (15v-115).Odi analysis of the cas allegations of tipm defects resulting in stall while driving, airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, fire and other faults identified a single defect condition related to 1 of over 60 different circuits in the tipm assembly. The most common effect of this defect condition, related to the fuel pump relay, was a no-start concern, but it could also result in stall while driving (76 complaints). No valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fire resulting from tipm faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components.Except insofar as the petitioners contentions relate to the defect condition addressed by the chrysler recalls, the factual bases of the petitioners contentions that any further investigation is necessary are unsupported. In our view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists or a nhtsa order for the notification and remedy of a safety-related defect as alleged by the petitioner at the conclusion of the requested investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsas limited resources to best accomplish the agencys safety mission, the petition is denied. This action does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will take further action if warranted by future circumstances. While driving down the highway, 7 of 8 lug studs of the right front wheel spontaneously broke off. Vehicle became difficult to control and steer. The one remaining lug stud kept the wheel on long enough to pull onto the shoulder of the road. This was a heavily travelled interstate highway. My safety and the safety of other motorists was at high risk. Broken lug studs are available for inspection. All of them broke at the location where the threads end at the shoulder of the bolt. I had recently performed brake service and the wheels were mounted and properly torqued to manufacturer specifications. No police report or dealer inspection. I made the repairs. No prior warning of the problem. This is identical to the problem a friend had with his ram dually, that is now in a recall. Part number is 6509866aa. I have owned this vehicle since it was new.

While pulling a trailer, integrated trailer brake controller stopped working and disabled the trailer brakes. All trailer lights worked, just no brakes. Showed red warning in dash and "cf" on brake controller after failure. No warning before failure. Checked connections and tested with another trailer. Even with no trailer, warning is on and trailer brakes are not functional. Created hazard to driver and other motorists by spontaneous loss of brakes. Online forums indicate this is not an isolated incident. More recently, now the trailer running lights have failed. Brake and turn signal lights work, but no running lights. No police report of inspections. Not yet repaired. Available for inspection.

The integrated brake controller is intermittent at best. I purchased a trailer and it hooked up fine. Worked fine towing until i disconnected the trailer and seven pin connector. Now the controller tells me there is no trailer on the controller and the dash alerts. Upon pulling the trailer again the controller tells me i'm not towing when i am. ??

At approximately 11:30 pm, i heard a vehicle horn honking outside in the driveway. Got out of bed to investigate. Observed my 2102 ram 3500 diesel truck with lights on and flashing and horn was honking. Keys for truck were in the house. Went outside with keys and tried key-less entry fob to open the cab door with no success. Smelled smoke. Opened drivers side door with regular key to see lights on dashboard all lit up. Opened the hood to see lots of smoke and observed glowing wiring harness next to driver's side battery. Harness was glowing orange all the way from the firewall to the fuse box (power distribution module) next to battery. Went into garage to get wrenches and fire extinguisher. Disconnected driver side battery but the electrical harness was still glowing orange and smoking. Next, disconnected auxiliary battery on passenger side and wiring harness stopped glowing and burning. Truck was parked in driveway, in front of garage, next to the house. Keys were not in the vehicle at the time. Vehicle was parked and not running at the time. Vehicle had not been started or driven for approximately 2 weeks prior to the spontaneous thermal event. Vehicle had approximately 56,500 miles at time of thermal event. Massive short circuit appears to have originated in the fuse box (power distribution module) under the hood, causing all wires leading out of the module to short circuit, causing massive and total electrical system failure. Something in transmission (68rfe) failed and dumps fluid out of the transmission dip stick tube onto the turbo which could cause a fire. This happened while driving and smoke started coming out of engine compartment. I was driving on a city street in the town i lived.
