  • Recall 90576 [USA]: If a brake tube becomes damaged and leaks fluid, it may result in increased stopping distances, and in some cases, loss of vehicle front braking performance, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Toyota is recalling certain toyota racing development (trd) brake kits, p/n ptr09-35070, and trd high-performance brake kits, p/n ptr09-35100, installed by toyota vehicle processing centers and sold by toyota dealers as an optional accessory for model year 2007 through 2012 toyota fj cruiser vehicles. The subject trd brake kit is specifically designed for the front wheels of 2007-2012 model year fj cruiser vehicles. Due to the shape of the outer brake tube of the brake kit, the clearance between the outer brake tube and a trd 16 inch 6-spoke alloy wheel is minimal. If wheel balance weights are installed in an incorrect location, there is a possibility that the outer brake tube could be damaged due to interference with the balance weight, and brake fluid could leak from the damaged tube.
all known owners of 2007-2012 model year fj cruiser vehicles will be notified by first class mail. If the vehicle is equipped with one of the trd brake kits, the brake caliper outer brake tube will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge. During this service, if necessary, the dealer will make wheel balance adjustments. This remedy will be performed even if the vehicle has original equipment 16 inch or 17 inch wheels or trd 16 inch beadlock ring type wheels, which are not affected by the condition, to assure sufficient clearance in the event wheels are changed at a later time. Notification to owners began on december 17, 2012. Owners may contact toyota customer experience center at 1-800-331-4331.
owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 76828 [USA]: Failure to warn of tire deflations is a non-compliance with fmvss 138 and could lead to tire failure increasing the risk of a crash.
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2011 fj cruiser, land cruiser, tacoma, sequoia and tundra vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 138, "tire pressure monitoring system (tpms)." when factory-installed wheels and tires were replaced with toyota authorized accessory wheels and lt tires prior to first sale, the tire pressure monitoring systems were not re-calibrated correctly and therefore do not start illuminating the low tire pressure warning telltale at the required minimum activation pressure.
for the land cruiser, sequoia, tacoma and tundra vehicles, the dealer will re-calibrate the tire pressure monitoring system on affected vehicles and install an updated tire and loading information label at no charge. For the fj cruiser vehicles, the tpms cannot be reset so the electronic control unit (ecu) for the tpms will be replaced. Toyota is currently developing the remedy ecu. If an owner is not certain whether his or her vehicle is equipped with these accessories, please contact any toyota dealer for an inspection at no charge. The safety recall began on march 31, 2011. • Recall 2021723 [Canada]: Accessories
Issue: this recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at toyota or lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: this recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 pk5a408j09 pU14000904 C014003151 pk5a408j13 pU14000905 C014000885 pk5a489j11 pU14000907 C014000888 pk5a489j22 pU14000909 C014000907 pk5a410h00 pU14000911 C014100904 pU14000900 pU14000913 C014100907 pU14000901 pU14003571 C014100911 pU14000902 pk5a408j05 pU14000903 safety risk: engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

  • Recall 2013084 [Canada]: Seats and restraints
On certain vehicles, due to insufficient strength of the access door (rear door) panels, cracks may develop if the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed over an extended period of time. As the driver and front passenger seat belt retractors are mounted in the access door panels, if cracks occur in the panel around the lower retractor anchor, the seat belt retractors could become detached. This could increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a crash. Correction: dealers will inspect the rear door panels for cracks or separation. Depending on the results of the inspection, the dealer will repair as necessary.

The rear fuel tank strap broke due to corrosion and it was retained. The fuel tank was spotted hanging lower than normal after driving on a long trip on a vacation. I removed the tank shield and have removed the vehicle from service until new tank straps arrive. No police or insurance have been contacted. There was no warning of this failure or evidence this failure was imminent.

This vehicle started to develope rust immediately after purchase. The vehicle is a 2008 and is scary rusty on the frame and other components. An abnormal amount of rust compared to other 2008 era vehicles. Eventually one of these faulty frames are going to break in a high speed scenario and serious injury or death will occur. My otherwise perfect fj cruiser only has 35000 miles on it and sat in storage for the winter of 2016 and 2017.

The rear gas tank strap snapped on the vehicle (the strap side facing to the outside of the vehicle). The strap failed due to rust. The strap must have snapped when i hit a bump in the road. However, i did not know that the strap had failed until i happened to be standing behind the vehicle one day and noticed the tank sagging. Therefore, i do not know how many days that i had been driving around with the tank hanging, supported only by the front strap. But i think that possibly i noticed the failure within one day of the failure. The red strap in the photo is my temporary support until i can have the straps replaced.

2008 toyota fj cruiser frame rotting from inside and out. All suspension components have been replaced due parts failing because of corrosion that bled over from the frame to include both front steering knuckles, two parts that only ever get replaced in the event of an accident. Several frame supports have corroded from the inside out and are flaking off. Brake components that run along the frame have corroded from the frame to the bracket that holds them to the lines themselves. Cause a slow brake leak over time that eventually resulted in a dangerous near accident situation that was caused by complete immediate lack of brake pressure. Evasive driving and a sound mind avoided a legitimate accident, had to tow the truck to a shop. Unsafe to drive. Frame will not hold up in an accident. 12 year old frame should not be anywhere near this condition. Due to oversights at the manufacturer this frame is now corroding from the inside out.

The vehicle has a severely rusty frame. Rest of the fj body is mint with a total of 80k miles. The rear cross section where the gem hitch bolts to is particularly bad and has hole. The hitch itself is also sitting a little crooked which i believe is due to the poor structural integrity of the cross bar. Towing is out of the question at this point but more importantly, i am very worried what might happen in an event i get rear ended.

We bought our fj cruiser new in 2008. I have meticulously maintained (with sevice records from toyota dealership), and i ha e always kept it meticulous inside and out. The vehicle is a 2008 with 100k miles and looks brand new up top... However the undercarriage is a completely different story. No matter how often i cleaned the frame, suspension, and drivetrain i could not keep the rust at bay, now i'm extremely concerned about my families safety. I'm worried brackets are about to rust off, and body mounts and bolts are showing severe rust, this is unacceptable. I have never seen a cars undercarriage rust so quickly and completely in all my life. This needs to be remedied before people start getting hurt while driving with these with these unsafe chassis and components. And my gas tank straps are rotting fast. I have owned toyota's my whole life. I currently own 5 different land cruisers. We loved our fj and bought it because we thought it would last.

Hello, toyota calipers and caliper pistons have a problem. The pistons or calipers are corroding and causing delayed employment of braking on that caliper. Understand that the calipers that are working correctly will "pull" to the side they are on and the caliper that has a problem will have a delayed engagement. This is extremely dangerous. The "good" caliper causes the car to pull to that side, then the "bad" caliper engages pulling the car back the other way. When the brakes are released, the "good" caliper lets go and the "bad" caliper releases a few seconds later. Understand that this can happen on any of the four calipers front or rear. The combinations of good and bad calipers can cause the car to zig zag left or right unpredictably, pulling left or right, and if the driver is not ready for it, can cause a big problem controlling the car. Hard to explain the complexity of the various braking responses you can get with this problem, but check the comments on the internet and know that there are thousands of people with issues with fj cruisers, four runners etc. I have had three calipers replaced under warranty, but the problem is returning. Toyota knows they have a problem, but as usual, no public acknowledgement. Please do something about it. You can contact me anytime, [xxx]. This is a problem and please look into it. Driver seat belt wont retract. Defect on recall and reportedly repaired on 08-15-13 at carson city scion, nevada. The defect remains as seat belt will not retract. I purchased vehicle used in july, 2016; seat belt retracted then but was very loose requiring adjustment constantly. I contacted toyota of salinas on 2/28/17 and spoke with service manager don correll. Correll informed me his company would not repair the defect as toyota in carson city already did. I then showed him, and service assistant ivan gonzales of the defect and advised them the safety defect was not properly repaired and remains defective and unsafe due to repair deficiency as it was self evident the alleged repair was not done properly. Correll's response was: : we are not going to fix your car".

Brake caliper and brake caliper pistons bind in caliper bore causing the vehicle to pull to one side or the other depending on which side the problem is. When the brakes are applied, the "good" calipers do their job, but the bad caliper pistons are momentarily stuck and this causes the car to pull to the good side as the brakes are applied, then a moment later the "bad" brake pistons let loose and the car pulls back the other way. Also then as the pistons are bound, when the brakes are released, the good side pistons retract, but the bad side bind on return, so pulling to the bad side. This is most noticed on the front brakes but also occur on the back. Note that the "bad" side on the back may not be the same side as "bad" on the front, causing a zig-zag type pulling , front one way, back the other and can be very unptedictable, particularly when sudden or "panic" braking occurs. I purchased an extended warranty with the car and toyota authorized and the dealer did replace three complete calipers no charge under my extended toyota warranty. However subsequent complaints brought the regional service rep to a meeting at my request where we went to an empty parking lot and conducted "panic" stops several times at 35 mph and one at 40 mph with not duplication of my complaints. I am suspicious that the panic stopping is a way to get what would be called a "proportioning control valve" to un-stick. This valve as i call it is a device that balances brake fluid pressure to all four calipers in an equal criss-cross pressure so all calipers are getting the same pressure unlike old fassioned single or double systems from back in the day. I can't verify this is a "secret" service fix for unbalanced braking, but now some months after my caliper replacements, the calipers are beginning to exhibit the same problem and i'm out of warranty. Obviously there is a problem with the design

A vehicle was traveling very slowly on a rural interstate as my toyota fj cruiser approached in the same lane. The driver of the fj cruiser braked quickly to avoid hitting the slow moving vehicle. However, an 18-wheeler behind it could not stop fast enough. It rear-ended my fj cruiser sending the front-end colliding directly into the back of the slow moving vehicle. As the 18-wheeler continued forward, my fj cruiser was squeezed out from between the two vehicles and pushed into another lane. Both the driver and passenger of my fj cruiser were transported to the hospital for injuries. No airbags deployed at any time during the collision with the slow moving vehicle. Extensive damage to the front and rear of my vehicle resulted in a total loss. *tr

The dealer did replace my master cylinder and the pressure pump after the experience with the abs issues as others have stated, this was when the car was under warranty. It seemed to fix the abs problem with the long pulsing and basically the computer taking over the braking. I am still experiencing a mushy pedal and lack of braking when the car is driven over a longer period of time or during the summer months. However after a lot of research and paying attention to the symptoms, i am convinced this is a pressure and heat problem. I don't know why on a 5700 lb vehicle that they are using ceramic pads, dot 3 fluid and this pressure system, it just can't handle it. *tr

Toyota is risking lives with the fj cruiser - owners are currently driving with a risk of non-functional seat belts. After receiving a recall notice in the mail on monday, 5/20, i checked the toyota website and found the following information on the logged-in owner site: this is an important safety recall. Please contact your authorized toyota dealer and schedule an appointment to perform an inspection and install reinforcement brackets on both doors access at no charge to you. Based upon the inspection, in limited cases, the seat belt retractor(s) and/or access door(s) may be replaced. I immediately made an appointment for that same afternoon. I had to argue with the dealer that the brackets were required (they wanted only to perform the inspection and stop there if no cracks were present). After finally agreeing that yes, the brackets needed to be installed (they had 'misread' the process flow chart! They don't appear to have had any training on what could potentially be a life-threatening situation for their customers), they said they had none in stock and would order them today. This morning they called me and said that toyota has "blocked ordering of those parts" - and suggested that it might be because the solution doesn't work. Currently we are driving vehicles that do not meet minimal government safety requirements - both the driver and front passenger are in danger of having seat belts malfunction during an accident. They should be providing some type of relief (e.G., loaner cars until the issue is resolved). Thank you. *tr

While coming to a stop, if my 2008 toyota fj cruiser hits a bump the abs brake system activates kicking back on the brake pedal. Then, the brakes grab as if they are going to lock up and skid. The only way to stop the brake system from continuing to do this is to release the pedal completely then, reapply the brakes. Obviously this isn't what you want to do in order to stop. There are numerous cases like this documented on this website. How much more documentation does toyota need before they take this seriously? *tr

There is buckling of the body, right and left side, under hood approximately where the hood hinges attach to body. The mechanic has advised it is a weak point in the body which on some vehicles the body actually cracks and transfers over to the fender over time. It looks like it is due to vibration from the body front end to the rear firewall. The estimated cost to fix this problem from a toyota certified body shop is $11,837.02. I have filed a complaint with toyota corporate, and it is pending. Toyota doesn't seem to want to take responsibility. *tr

2008 toyota fj cruiser, build date:10/07. Have had unnerving experiences with the brake system on my fj.(1) when braking over a non smooth road the brake pedal pulsates for a long period and does not stop the vehicle. (2) had to panic stop and hit the brakes hard, they locked up, there was no braking just the abs took over and locked up the brakes hard to the point that i was glad i was wearing my seat belt, because i would've been lying in the street.(3) the pedal will be hard one time and mushy the next when applying the brakes. When the pedal is mushy the brakes do not work appropriately, nearly rear ending people or locking up the brakes to stop. (4) when at a stop the pedal was mushy and i tried to "pump"up the pedal by pumping the brake pedal, all the warning lights came on (related to the braking system) the dash and an annoying alarm sounded, has happened 3 times now. (5) when the pedal is mushy i can push it down all the way to the stopping point/floor with no resistance. Called the dealer they said they have never had any "issues". *tr

I have a 2008 fj cruiser manual transmission. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me since i've owned the truck. On may 10th, i was driving down the highway at about 70-80 mph. The truck to the right of me seemed like he wanted to change lanes in to my lane. I hit the breaks to let him in but the braking power being applied to the rotors was a lot harder then what i needed. In other words, it seemed like the computer thought my brake pedal was all the way down to the floor when in reality, i just needed a quick brake. Anyway, the wheels locked up to and released. It scared me how hard the truck stopped-- almost caused an accident behind me. The brakes then released and i kept going, but could smell the burnt rubber for another mile. This was a cement highway road that may have had some cracks in it but i don't remember if being particularly uneven. Just seemed like the computer misunderstood how much actual pressure i applied to the pedal and over braked. The first time this ever happened was probably a year ago when i was going around 20mph. Again, don't remember the condition of the road being overly terrible. *tr

My toyota fj cruiser has an issue involving the anti-lock braking system. If i hit a bump while decelerating, the abs pulses in such a way that it is impossible to stop safely at my original planned stopping point. If, for example, i am decelerating and plan on stopping within 100 yards at a stop sign, and i hit a pot hole, the abs will pulse (engage brakes briefly, disengage them, then engage again repeatedly) in such a fashion that i will stop several yards beyond the stop sign. The pulse pattern of the abs on the fj cruiser is dangerously long, and has caused several near misses on my part in a variety of situations (missing stop signs / lights, almost rear-ending someone due to hitting a bump/engaging abs while stopping, etc.) *tr

I purchased new a 2008 toyota fj cruiser 2 wheel drive with automatic transmission. Since ownership from march 2009 to date, i have been experiencing a lurching forward of the vehicle while the brakes are applied and at a full stop. This lurching forward occurs when the air conditioner is on and at the time that the air conditioner clutch engages. Most of the time, when the air conditioner clutch engages, the engine rpm only increases about 100 rpm, but frequently, when the a/c clutch engages the engine rpm increases 300 to 400 rpm with normal brake pressure while stopped, 100 rpm engine increases cause no problem, but with 300 to 400 rpm engine increases, normal brake pressures while stopped are not adequate and the vehicle lurches forward. I took the vehicle to the bill penny toyota service department (huntsville, alabama) on 02/23/2010 and the service report stated that they could not duplicate the problem. Toyota generally will do nothing about this issue and will blame it on abuse or misuse. *tr

I have repeatedly complained about the accelerator hesitation in my 2008 toyota fj cruiser. It has been a problem since i purchased it, brand new. I know someone who has the exact same problem with hers. She complained to pauley toyota, ft. Smith, arkansas i complained to fayetteville auto park toyota in fayetteville, arkansas. Both dealers solution was to reset computer. Obviously this is a chronic issue with no permanent solution. The danger lies especially when merging onto highways, the hesitation slows the vehicle down and engine revs. Please help. There is no specific incident date so i will choose an arbitrary date in order to submit *tw

2008 fj cruiser, 4800 miles, manual trans, no modifications, passenger side fender inner is collapsing (cracks in the steel fender inner and gross deformation of the sheet metal) within the engine bay in area of crumple zone creases/gussets. My concern is that the crash worthiness of the vehicle has been decreased. Additionally there is a major hood alignment issue . Hood alignment problems can be directly related to hood latch failures which could cause injury to both the vehicle occupant as well as pose a hazard to others on the road. The dealer was not able to diagnose the fender crack or hood alignment problems and provide a countermeasure/repair and claims that they have not previously seen these failures. *tr

Antilock brakes activated after hitting ripple in exit ramp surface. Vehicle would not stop despite pressing down harder on the brake pedal. Required releasing brake pedal completely and then reapplying brakes to cause vehicle to stop. Came very close to shooting out into four-way intersection. Has happened on several occasions under similar circumstances (very minor bump on road causes antilocks to active upon breaking though this doesn't actually stop the vehicle).

Bulging inner fender , fj cruiser 08. *tr

This is a sporadic occurrence and cannot be reproduced deliberately: when braking suddenly at 40 mph and below, the vehicle does not slow down noticeably. It appears only minimal braking force is exerted at these occurrences, despite maximum brake force on the pedal. This happens also on dry pavement, ruling out skidding as cause of failed deceleration. The massively prolonged braking distance caused two near-misses. The vehicle was purchased new, with the brake defect first noticed during the first year of operation (first 15,000 miles). The dealership was notified, details explained, and an inspection of the braking system was requested. The dealership was unable to duplicate the concern because of the only sporadic occurrence of brake failure. No action was taken. *tr

Inner fender panel buckling above wheel well, on passenger side. Happened under normal driving conditions. Crack on outside fender also. Buckle leads to large 3-5 inch crack, affect hood closure and secureness of hood. *tr

Fj cruiser front inner fender is bulging out into the engine compartment. It appears the front body (hood + fenders) is constructed with too thin a gauge of steel causing excessive front body panel flexing and it's giving out at the weakest point. I have not done anything at this point to correct it as i just noticed it and i'm now monitoring its progression. I am concerned that the bulging will progress into the sheet metal ripping as it has done on other fj cruisers thus reducing the effectiveness of the engineered crumple zone. This is my daily driver and i transport my children (currently 3 and 5 yrs.) on a daily basis. Should i be concerned? *tr

I bought a new 2008 toyota fj cruiser and while i had my foot on the brake the engine accelerated. This happened two times within 3 months of me buying the car. Since then over a year has passed and this has not happened again. *tr

Bought new fj august 2008 special edition. By january the windshield had a very small chip and then over night proceeded to crack across windshield on drivers side. Today i went to lunch and there happened to be another fj there and i looked at his windshield and he has a crack in the exact same location. There must be a design flaw. I have several chips in my windshield on my 2001 tacoma and none of them have cracked. What's up with this?????? *tr

I have had an issue more than once where when applying my brakes if i hit a bump the abs will take over, the brake pedal pulses and i will lose the ability to stop on my original mark. When this happens it feels as though the vehicle is barely attempting to make a stop at all. I have tried to apply more pressure to the brake pedal with no success. I have also tried removing pressure from the pedal and reapplying pressure but that does not seem to stop the vehicle any faster. I have had the problem when cruising between 35 and 45 mph. *tr

Had vehicle lifted by toyota and paid toyota for this modification. Approx 10 month later i showing sign of fenders bulging and tearing. They had me sign a wavier that warranty may not cover modifications after accepting vehicle. Yet there having vehicles lifted and put on there lot to sell. I have talked to many others who have this problem some lifted some not. Also toyota have a upgraded the parts to fix problem .Which i have pictures of. The problem is frame flexes to much and rips in wrinkle zones on vehicle for frontal crashes. I uses vehicle for trail riding and hunting . And i also own 2 other 4x4 ford, jeep and have no body tearing on them. *tr

The brake system on my 2008 toyota fj cruiser is faulty. When going over any bumps and braking the pedal feels like a master cyl, failure. The pedal goes to the floor and breaking becomes non existent. It's been to the dealer but they can't find the problem and even though it's under warranty they keep charging me labor. I'm a mechanical person and i know when there's a problem. In light of toyota's recent problems and propensity to evade, i want my concerns on record. I would be happy to let a 3rd party examine the vehicle. Hopefully something will be done before more people die at the hands of a faulty car. I'm looking at the date box below, this is a recurring problem that i first noticed in the winter of 2008-2009. *tr

2008 toyota fj cruiser is experiencing inner fender bulging. This started occurring shortly after buying the vehicle. The vehicle currently has 4800 miles. This problem has been well documented and in most cases does not stop until the inner fender is cracked all the way through. Obviously, there is some sort of design flaw. *tr

I own a 2008 toyota fj cruiser and have driven both on and off road since february of 2008. I have noticed a popping sound when opening the passenger side door, when the dealership went to look at why this was happening they discovered that the inner fender apron in the engine bay was buckled and torn in the crumple zone even though i have never struck anything with my vehicle, not the ground, not another car, nothing. The rips run from the top of the crumple zone to approximately one half inch from the bottom, the top of the tear is folding forward so that the tear has resulted in an opening in the shape of a v, i assume this shift is what is causing the door impingement against the quarterpanel. *tr

2008 fj cruiser has traveled approximately 150 miles off road on established trails and 15000 miles on paved roads. There are tears in the inner fender aprons in the crumple zone and the nose of the body appears to be sagging down. The passenger side door is impinged and paint is chipping off when it is opened. The rips formed spontaneously, there has been no collision or impact on the vehicle. The tears are through metal running from the top of the crumple zone to about a half inch before the bottom of the crumple zone, the tear is about 6 inches from the back of the engine bay. *tr

No crashes. Failure every time i drive the vehicle. Front end vibrations are a sign of front end design problems that could be early signs of front end fatigue and not simply tire/wheel balance issues. *tr

I bought a new 2008 toyota fj cruiser on 10/18/07 and my windshield has been chipped three times now(5/8/08). I have talked to several other owners of this vehicle and all have had the same problem. In some states insurance will pay for a new windshield but not ga. *tr

I have complained to toyota about the rust form the start of ownership, there response was that the frames were made in america. Does matter where it was made just the super poor quality of the metal. I believe this is the same frame as the tundra's and they are all recalled why not the fj cruisers?

I purchased a 2008 toyota f.J. Cruiser and since i have had the vehicle i have had continuous problems with a defect in the drive train which has now caused problems with my transmission having started to skip. The dealership has promised on numerous occasions to fix the problems, but as of yet have not been able to. I continue to get the same run around from big business. Can someone please shed light on this obvious defect with this vehicle. Nothing they have done so far has fixed the problem. Help me!!!! *tr

Over the life of the vehicle, cracks have developed in the front inner fender structure, which have now turned into large splits in the crumple zones. The cause is a result of body movement between the frame and body. Toyota has denied warranty coverage due to large tires installed on vehicle, yet has redesigned the inner fender structure of these vehicles three times due to this same issue with stock vehicles. As the tears in the fender structure progress, the front clip of the vehicle has begun to drift, and the hood gap and fender gaps are shifting. I am concerned with the safety of the vehicle and how collision standards will be affected with the crumple zones cracked. *tr

Purchase the 2008 fj cruiser on oct. 13th 2007 with less than 300 miles on the vehicle i now have a cracked windshield. I didn't hear anything hit the windows, but noticed the 6 inch long crack when i opened the door this morning (oct 18) to drive the vehicle to work. Note: i could not show the incident date correctly as 2008 is not available foe selecting. *tr
