These issues could ultimately result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect the rack and pinion gear assembly. If it passes the inspection, new bellows will be installed and grease added to the bottom pinion bearing. A steering gear that fails the inspection will be replaced.

  • Recall 2011346 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, specific operating conditions (such as tight, successive, highly banked curves in opposite directions), could trigger unintended electronic stability control (esc) system intervention. As a result, the esc may unnecessarily apply one of the front brakes in order to correct the perceived oversteer condition. This may cause the vehicle to deviate from the intended path, thereby increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the esc module.

  • Recall 2011345 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain trucks, the plastic low-pressure fuel line between the engine-mounted fuel filter and the engine block may develop a diesel fuel leak. The location of the leak is unlikely to result in a vehicle fire; however, diesel fuel spilt on the roadway could endanger other road users by making the roadway unexpectedly slippery. This could ultimately result in a vehicle crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the plastic low-pressure fuel line with a steel version.

  • Recall 2009259 [Canada]: Steering
On certain trucks, the left inner tie rod end may loosen and eventually separate from the steering rack. Tie rod failure could result in a loss of steering control and a crash, causing personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will remove and inspect the left inner tie rod. Damaged steering racks will be replaced.

  • Recall 2009270 [Canada]: Engine
On certain vehicles equipped with a caterpillar c15 engine, the variable valve actuation (vva) oil line may wear against the p-clip retaining the oil line. An oil leak could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: caterpillar dealers will replace the vva oil line with an updated version.

  • Recall 2009287 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain trucks, the plastic low-pressure fuel line may fatigue crack and leak. Diesel fuel leakage may ignite on a hot engine surface and cause a fire, which could result in property damage, personal injury or death. As well, diesel fuel spilt on the roadway could endanger other road users. Correction: dealers will replace the plastic low-pressure fuel line with a steel low-pressure line.

  • Recall 2008078 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain trucks, the high-pressure fuel line at each injector may fatigue and fracture if a fastener at the end of the line is not properly connected. This would allow high pressure atomized diesel fuel to enter the engine compartment, creating a risk of fire, which could result in property damage, personal injury, or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

  • Recall 2007096 [Canada]: Steering
On certain trucks, the front spindle nut may have been over-tightened during vehicle assembly, causing preload on the front wheel bearings which may lead to premature bearing wear. If rapid bearing wear is allowed to progress, the front wheel assembly may separate from the vehicle and cause a crash. Correction: dealers will verify bearing adjustment and, if found to be incorrect, will replace the bearings.

  • Recall 2007173 [Canada]: Other
On certain trucks, the rear drive axle housing was manufactured with steel below the specified thickness, which could result in fatigue failure over time. If failure occurs, the outboard end of the housing could eventually separate, allowing the hub, axle shaft, and/or wheel and brake assembly to separate from the vehicle. This could cause a vehicle crash with injury or death. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the axle assembly.

  • Recall 2007229 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles, the fasteners that attach the steering arm or tie rod arm to the spindle may have been over or under tightened during assembly process. Incorrectly torqued steering arm fasteners may fatigue and fracture, possibly causing a crash without warning. Correction: dealers will inspect fasteners and apply correct tightening torque.

  • Recall 2007230 [Canada]: Suspension
On certain trucks, the flange, crossmember, and web mounting surfaces of the center suspension mounting bracket casting may not be perpendicular. An out of square casting may have unacceptable stresses in the bracket when it is installed and may cause it to crack in service. The driveline may not be held in position if a cracked bracket fractures completely. This will affect vehicle control and may cause a crash without warning. Correction: dealers will replace casting out of specs.

  • Recall 2007231 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, the internal rubber check valve inside the bendix sr-7 spring brake modulating valve can become deformed over time. The effect of this defect is intermittent and presents a potential delay or failure in applying the parking brakes; potentially resulting in a vehicle roll away. Should this occur, the unattended roll away vehicle could strike a bystander or cause property damage. Correction: dealers will install a check valve repair kit.

  • Recall 2007232 [Canada]: Steering
On certain trucks, the two upper tilt plate bolts may loosen with use and fall out. These fasteners hold the upper column assembly in place. The steering column pivot may fracture if the bolts are missing when an excessive force is applied to the steering wheel. A loss of steering control could result in a vehicle crash causing injury or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs

  • Recall 2007251 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain trucks, when the ignition key is in the 'on' position, the pre-heater, located in the fuel filter base, is energized. If this pre-heater is energized while maintenance is being performed on the fuel filter, diesel fuel could ignite within the filter housing. A fire within the fuel filter housing may spread possibly resulting in property damage or personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the fuel heater assembly.

  • Recall 2007279 [Canada]: Steering
On certain trucks, the driver's side inner tie rod may be damaged while the truck is executing a sharp turn. Excessive tie rod angles may loosen the tie rod ball socket and/or damage the threaded tie rod attachment to the steering rack. As a result, the tie rod assembly may fail, possibly causing a loss of vehicle control and a crash. Correction: dealers will replace the front axle steering stops to limit turning radius and prevent interference with the tie rod assembly.

  • Recall 2007280 [Canada]: Steering
On certain trucks, the tie rod arms may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. If the right steering arm is installed on the left knuckle, excessive tie rod angles may loosen the threaded tie rod attachment to the steering rack. As a result, the tie rod assembly may fail, possibly causing a loss of vehicle control and a crash. Correction: dealers will inspect for proper steering arm installation. Steering components will be replaced on trucks that have incorrectly installed tie rod arms.

  • Recall 2007359 [Canada]: Other
On certain trucks, the fifth wheel hitch assembly's lever arm may have been incorrectly installed during the manufacturing process. The lever arm pivot bolt may have been over-tightened which could distort the pivot bolt spacer sleeve and prevent the fifth wheel latch jaw from closing and latching securely around the trailer king pin. This could allow the towed unit to separate from the towing vehicle while underway, potentially causing a crash with injury or death. Correction: dealers will replace the pivot bolt and sleeve with a hex head shoulder bolt and washer.

  • Recall 2007360 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain trucks, the wiper motor ground wire was omitted during vehicle assembly. As a result, the wiper motor may not operate or may function intermittently. This could lead to reduced visibility and a crash without warning. Correction: dealers will install a wiper motor ground wire.

  • Recall 2006143 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, a defect in the modulated spring brake valve casting may cause an intermittent delay in the application of the park brake. This could cause the vehicle to roll away without warning, possibly causing personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect valves for a suspect date code and cavity number. Defective valves will be replaced.

  • Recall 2006269 [Canada]: Other
On certain trucks, an improperly seated or missing u-joint snap ring for the inter-axle driveshaft assembly could allow a bearing cup to separate. The u-joint cross could then contact the slip yoke casting and eventually cause the ear work to fracture. This could result in additional damage to the driveline, the vehicle to which it is attached and any additional nearby objects. Correction: dealers will replace drivelines with missing or incorrectly installed snap rings.

  • Recall 2006301 [Canada]: Suspension
On certain trucks, the front spindle nut may have been over-tightened during vehicle assembly, causing preload on the front wheel bearings which may lead to premature bearing wear. If rapid bearing wear is allowed to progress, the front wheel assembly may separate from the vehicle and cause a crash. Correction: dealers will verify bearing adjustment and, if found to be incorrect, will replace the bearings.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Daimler trucks north america recalls investigation as of 20180423

Examination of safety recall filings for recalls 17v-761, 17v-810, 18v-157, and 18v-163 as submittedby daimler trucks north america (dtna) has raised concerns about the timeliness and scope of these recalls. In particular, odi is concerned that dtna may not have acted with appropriate speed in making a defect determination and filing with the agency. This investigation will examine whether dtna acted in conformance with its responsibilities under the safety act and selected an appropriate scope for these recalls.

  • Rack and pinion failure investigation as of 20090831

A consumer complaint was filed with the agency on august 22, 2009, by an independent contractor leasing a 2009 freightliner cascadia. The complaint alleges that in april of 2009 at approximately 50,000 miles he experienced a seal rupture in the rack and pinion assembly.A new seal was installed and at 56,000 miles he found his right steer tire completely bald. The repair shop identified an internal failure of the rack and pinion assembly causing the rapid wear of the tire.Odi has identified ewr field reports related to failed rack and pinions on the subject vehicles. The reports identify either an internal failure of the rack and pinion assembly that resulted in crashes or a looseness of the inner tie rod end of the rack and pinion resulting in a poor alignment and premature tire wear.Information received during this investigation from freightliner detailed failures of the rack and pinion assemblies on the subject vehicles. These failures were the result of the left hand inner tie rod end becoming loose over time. When the tie rod becomes loose, it may separate from the rack and pinion assembly and make the vehicle difficult to steer.Frieghtliner has concluded that a defect related to motor vehicle safety does exist on the subject vehicles and has initiated a safety recall (09v-357) that will remedy all of them. This recall involves removing the tie rod and adding a compound to it that will prevent the tie rod from coming loose over time.A copy of the recall is attached.Freightliners action resolves the issues raised by this investigation and, therefore, this investigation is closed.

The vin last 6: [xxx] ; zf merit or,12 speed automatic transmission the center carrier bearing which supports the output shaft after the transmission did not last more than 3 years and had excessive play. The first repair invoice was on 3/1/2012 and the most recent repair was on 4/28/2014. The rubber compound used in the center carrier bearing needs to be reevaluated. Once the center carrier bearing has play in the z direction, there would be excessive vibration that can fatigue other components and cause failure by initiating a fatigue crack and propagating due to cyclic stresses. Meritor should reevaluate the reliability of their center carrier assembly. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.S.C. 552(b)(6) *js

Wipers on lowest intermittent position during a light mist, after about 45 minutes in this position, wipers stopped suddenly and remained in their "transit" position. Visibility immediately went to zero (i was in outside lane and pulled over to shoulder.) i replaced the fuse/circuit with a standard fuse of equal rating and it immediately blew. After about thirty minutes, i re-installed the original fuse/circuit and the wipers began working. I continued with the wipers in the standard run position with no further problems. About two months later during a snow storm in colorado i had the wiper in the low intermittent position and experienced the same problem. This resulted in having stop the vehicle on the highway until the wipers resumed operating. This time it took only a few minutes. *tr

Roof leak that has been on going since taking delivery of truck brand new in june of 2007. When truck is subjected to heavy rain, and sometimes just a truck wash, water comes in roof at some point and shorts out the electronic modules located in side pillar next to drivers seat. Have also had episodes where the dash instruments will surge power on and off with no key in ignition, or if truck is running it cannot be shut off with key when this happens. Have put truck in dealer shop on four separate occasions to have this problem fixed under warranty. Each time they have replaced the electronic modules that have shorted out, and they acknowledge that there is a leak somewhere. However, dealer has been unable to isolate the problem and fix it. Not even sure of where else the water is going inside truck. Only know about it inside pillar because of the electronic modules it damages. Truck has since started to acquire a musty damp odor and has gotten to the point where i can no longer drive it for extended periods because it makes me extremely sick, and am currently having continuous health problems. I am at the point where i don't know what to do or where i stand on this situation because as far as i know i have no legal protection such as a lemon law on a commercial truck, even though dealer is unable to fix it. *tr
