  • Recall 2020003 [Canada]: Airbag
Issue: this recall is for certain vehicles that had an airbag inflator replaced as a part of an earlier recall campaign. This recall provides a final repair. Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety risk: if the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective actions: owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the passenger-front airbag inflator. The passenger-front airbag module or inflator will be replaced as necessary. Note: the canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

  • Recall 2014272 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger (frontal) airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the passenger airbag inflator. Note: this recall supersedes recall 2013117. Vehicles corrected as part of the previous campaign will require re-inspection and/or repair.

  • Recall 2013117 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger (frontal) airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the passenger airbag inflator.

  • Recall 2003267 [Canada]: Engine
On certain vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor may have an improper solder joint. This could cause the service engine soon warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation. Correction: dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor and both camshaft position sensors.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20210917

From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede ea15-001, which remains open.

  • Air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20150224

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe14-016 in june 2014 based on six inflator rupture incidents involving consumer owned vehicles produced by five vehicle manufacturers. All six vehicles were operated in florida or puerto rico at the time of the rupture and for the majority of their service life, and were equipped with inflators produced by takata, a tier-one supplier of automotive air bag systems.During the course of pe14-016, odi determined that five additional vehicle manufacturers used inflators of a similar design and vintage also supplied by takata. No evidence of field failures was found in vehicles produced by these five additional manufacturers.Nonetheless, at odis insistence, all 10 vehicle manufacturers initiated a regional recall within approximately two weeks of the opening of the investigation. The regions recalled initially included florida, puerto rico, hawaii, and the u.S. Virgin islands, areas with high absolute humidity and climatic conditions believed to be a significant factor in the inflator ruptures. As part of the recall actions, inflators removed from remedied vehicles are to be returned to takata for testing.Takatas initial test results on passenger inflators from remedied vehicles indicated a much higher than anticipated rupture frequency for inflators returned from florida.Accordingly odi requested all 10 manufacturers expand the regional recalls for passenger inflators to include other geographic areas where high absolute humidity conditions exist, including the gulf states and other coastal areas.Takatas testing of the passenger inflators to date continues to indicate this geographic area as having the highest risk, with no ruptures occurring from inflators returned from outside the expanded recall regions.During pe14-016 four additional passenger inflator field events occurred, all in vehicles from the same expanded geographic region. Also during pe14-016 four additional driver inflator field events occurred including two in vehicles from regions not known for high absolute humidity, specifically california and north carolina.Accordingly, odi requested all five of the affected vehicle manufacturers currently using the subject takata driver inflators expand to nationwide recalls.Significantly, neither of the affected vehicle manufacturers or takata provided any explanation to account for these two driver air bag inflator ruptures outside the area of high absolute humidity.Takata testing of returned driver inflators indicates a lower rupture frequency as compared to passenger inflator testing. All test ruptures reported by takata to date have occurred on inflators returned from high absolute humidity areas. The investigation now includes all manufacturers and vehicles known to be affected at this time.Odis investigation will focus on, among other things, root cause analysis, other potential defect consequences, identification of affected vehicles scope, and adequacy of the remedy. The five odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification numbers: 10537899, 10568848, 10585224, 10605877, 10651492

Camshaft sensor according to the infiniti dealership (ray brandt on causeway in metairie la.) is malfunctioning at makes the car engine die while driving. Then when you restart the car the engine revs fine in neutral but once in drive it won't go over 5 mph. Also the timing chain tensioner fails on this car and can cause severe engine damage while the car is being driven. I've looked up both of these problems and have spoken with nissan and infiniti and a simple internet search will also confirm that these 2 problems are extremely common on this 5th generation engine. Nissan even lost 2 class action lawsuits on the timing tensioner. Well if nissan lost 2 court battles over an engine defect that every nissan internet forum says is a very very common problem then why isn't there a recall. And shouldn't hazing headlights be a safety issue on all cars? Almost all cars have this problem and manufacturers keep building cars with unsafe headlights. Why aren't these recalls? Thank you for this website. As an american citizen and consumer with a daughter these safety concerns are very troubling to me and all my friends and business associates.

Car stops without warning on city street

NoNoN NoneNone20190221

While driving on the freeway last night during rush hour my car engine just stopped. . The dash lights came on,( slip, tcs, brake, check engine soon, oil and battery). I was able to get to the shoulder safely. Very scared but safe i was in the middle lane. Turned off ignition waited a few and restarted. Took surface street the rest of the way. 3-4 hours it started fine, however while driving back 25 miles on a residential street it happened again. Got it stared and some lights remained on (slip, tcs, check engine soon). Haven't started it today. Going to mechanic on monday. Only have 65000 miles on the car. I phoned infiniti consumer affairs and was told my vin wasn't and is not part of any recall and if it turns out to be the same issue i still have to pay for diagnosis and repairs.

My vehicles crank/cam sensor i believe has gone bad. I was driving on a city street, the car was driving fine and it was like the engine shut off but it was not i could drive 1 mph, and car would not rev up. My name is [xxx] , i have received a letter containing an urgent airbag safety recall on my infiniti i 35 2003. The letter from florida highway safety and motor vehicles states that hat there has been an airbag recalled for a safety defect in the airbag that could result in death or serious injury to me and/or my passengers. This happens to be my only vehicle and is extremely concerning because i have two small children, one with disabilities and the other is an infant! We depend on this vehicle everyday for specialty appointments and work! I need my car repaired as soon as possible, and while my care is being repaired, i will need another vehicle, as this is a huge inconvenience to my family! The car loses power after a while and will just stop as if it ran out of gas. This has happened several times, otherwise the car is ok. The mechanic suspects it has something to do with the crank position or circuit board. There was recalls on this model in 11/2003 and 12/2003 that describe exactly what happens to my vehicle. This slowing down to stopping happened on a major expressway and i had to be towed. It also happened again in my street and driveway having to be towed again.

I bought a 2003 infinit i35 a year ago as my first car. I have been having problems with my vehicle dying for what seems to be no reason. No warning lights would come on not even a check engine light. I was driving on the highway when it happened a week ago. While i was driving it died a total of four times. When i tried to start it back up it wouldn't turn over. It would not take a jump. No fluids were low. No cables or terminals were loose. I ended up having to get the vehicle towed. At the time it had 216,000 miles roughly. When i did research, i found that there was a recall associated with infiniti models 2003-2004 that had faulty crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. The same symptoms that i had were matching up to the those of the recall. It was happening to those models having 113,000-225,000 roughly. When i searched with the nhtsa website and infinit i found that this was not associated with my vin number. I then took it to a mechanic and found that in fact those same sensors were faulty causing the vehicle to function incorrectly. So now i have to wonder why then my 2003 infinit i35 was not recognized as being affected by my recall when i now have proof that the same sensors associated with this recall are in fact faulty.

Car shuts down. Over three years ago it died while driving. I took it to the infinity dealership. They told me it was cam sensor. Had it & crank sensor replaced. Problem persisted. Took back to infinity & was told it was the cylynoid. Had thatbreplace. Problem persisted. The infiniti dealer said the timing chain need replaced but my car was not worth spending that amount of repair. My car is well kept with it just now tirning over 100,000 miles. I got a second opinion from a certified custom nissan/infiniti shop. He laughed at the timing chain suggestion. They have built & repaired thousands of my vehicle & others witj timing chains ...Chains do not have issues on cars with very little milage & grandma driving style!. They changed the sensors for me again using original infiniti parts. My car ran fine for 2 years. Now i face the same problem once more. Unfortunately beyond recall limit that i am certain the dealership knew about 3 years ago which would have been within recall correction time limits! My car looses all power & all dash lights come on (engine, tcs, slip, brake, etc). Soetimes it will instantly come back alive. Most times it is just dead. Scenarios vary: 60 mph on freeway, sitting at red light, upon acceleration, going 5 mph, after 5 minutes of drive time, after days of drive time, ... There is no pattern or peticular action that causes it. It is very scary & dangerous to me & all around me. Now i have a great car in like new condition with only 100,000 miles, paid for, that i have to replace with no money or continue to endanger myself & others. I am furious. !!!! Takata recall--------my brother who lived in new york city gave me his 2003 infiniti i 35 when he retired from ny pd and gave me the infiniti. So i drove the car to calabash north carolina which is 10 minute drive to myrtle beach south carolina. For about 6 months or so no problems with the airbag however in the middle of the summer my airbag light comes on? So i called my brother and he told me the car already had the airbag replace per the recall. So i called infiniti to see if they could help me, they informed me that there was nothing they could do but they said i could go to a nissan or infiniti service. I go and the service manager told me it was $125 for diagnostic test. Called infiniti back and again i was informed that there was nothing that they could do. I have been driving for over 40 years and owned lots of cars never once did i ever have a problem with an airbag! I have owned foreign and domestic cars and again no airbag problems. What are the mathematical probability of my defective airbag system from only a infiniti i35 2003 being the only airbag problem with any automobile that i have owned in the last 40 + years? The math does not work they have a problem but they don't want to address it. It's the manufacturers fault not mine, what do they want me to do replace the airbag again? My gut feeling tells me that they didn't remedy the problem or the heat from living in the carolinas is adversely affecting my airbag. Please if you would save my email just in case i get hurt or killed because of there substandard airbag system that infiniti stated that they had no knowledge of a pre-existing substandard airbag placed in 2003 i35. Thank you for your time

I bought a used 2003 infiniti i-35 about a year ago and it was running fine until about a week ago when the engine suddenly shut off without warning while i was driving through an intersection. It really upset my girlfriend because we could have been 't-boned' on the passengers side and she could have been killed. When i got the car started it ran fine, like normal, except the 'slip', 'tcs', and 'check engine soon' lights all remained on. This has happened several times since then and now i'm concerned. I think that it might happen at another intersection and we won't be so lucky next time. The car has restarted everytime, with the slip, tcs and check engine lights staying on as before, except the check engine light always stays on all the time. From the complaints i have read on-line by several others that have had the same problem, it seems clear to me that this problem has been continually occurring in all models of the infinity line year after year, and the nissan motor company doesn't want to admit that there is a problem that they knew about and could have corrected but didn't, so they will not be held responsible in any wrongful death lawsuits. *tr

As i was approaching an intersection to make a left turn my car died suddenly. I wasn't sure what was happening. Since it started up immediately i didn't really think anything of it. Since the check engine light stayed on, i brought it in to my mechanic and he checked it out and thought he had fixed the issue. I had no issues for a short period of time. When it happened the second time and i was driving 35 mph, i knew something had to be wrong. This time the check engine soon light, slp and esc light all came on and the car starts jerking forward and then the car died. I managed to steer the car from the left lane to the right lane and pull over. It was a really strange and scary feeling. I told my mechanic what happened and he said cars just don't die as you are driving them and i said well this one did. I brought it to my mechanic again and the code P0345, cam sensor came up. After bringing it in a few times for the same issue, check engine soon light, slp and esc light all coming on and the car jerking forward we decided to see if there were any recalls on the car. Our research showed that there was a recall on this issue and we should contact infiniti. I contacted infiniti and they said my vin is not on the recall list for this issue. My question is what does it take for infiniti to own up that there is an issue with owners driving a car and it dying suddenly? Obviously it will take a few serious accidents. I brought my car into the dealer today hoping that they will fix this issue. When i told the dealer what was happening he said you have a technical issue and it is not a recall. *tr

Service department stated it was a bad cam sensor that needed replaced. Researched this and found that nissan/infiniti had recalled i35's for bad crank shaft / cam sensors under recall r3021/03v-455. Though close, my vin did not fall into the covered population, even though the described issue in the recall is exactly what happened to me. Recall - nhtsa campaign id number: 03v455000. Engine stopped while driving in normal conditions which could have caused a catastrophic accident. Loss complete control of the vehicle and the "slip" light, "tcs off" and "check engine light" all came on with complete engine failure while driving with no ability to regain control. I took the car to a mechanic and was told there is a code "P0340" - camshaft position sensor failure. Infiniti corporate had issued a recall # r3021 for this major issue. When i called infiniti corporate to take part of this serious recall and service my vehicle, they did not want to help claiming that they did not mark my vin # for the recall. I'll start the car, then start to drive; maybe after 15-20 minutes, the car will stutter and act like its about to cut off, like a jerking motion. From there the tcs, abs, slip, and engine light comes on; it'll resume to drive, after those lights come on, i'll be driving on the highway and the car just shuts off; i then have to put it in neutral (while at high speeds) then attempt to start the car again. After about two times while in neutral it'll start again. This is a very, very, dangerous situation; i have two small children that go everywhere with me! I contacted infinite consumer affairs and gave them the recall number and the campaign number and they stated that my car didn't fall into the range of vin numbers up for recall, when everyone else is complaining about the same exact thing; the only thing that the lady said is that my car is up for recall is the passenger airbag, help please! *tr

October 3rd 2013 i was coming back from lunch driving back to work. While i was on the road driving my vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with cars still behind me. I was almost rear ended that day as i did not expect my vehicle to turn off while driving. I got the vehicle towed on october 3rd 2013 to r&s here in charlotte north carolina. The mechanic called me saturday october 5th 2013 and told that my crankshaft position sensor was what went out while i was driving. The mechanic also informed me that my car make model and year has recalls on crankshaft, camshaft and timing variable. I also checked myself and this information was true. Online recalls for year were engine and cooling and airbags. I got my car from carmax 2009 and never was informed of the recalls so that i could get the issue resolved. My car had one owner before i purchased the car from carmax. I called the infiniti toll-free consumer line and they did nothing but say its vehicle specific and that they seen nothing for my vin number. My vin should have been in a recall as i still have the same issues for recalls that never got fixed on my 2003 infiniti i35 and my crankshaft, camshaft and timing variable caused my vehicle to stall and turn off in the middle of the road. I want this resolved. *tr

We were driving locally at normal speed and the car suddenly lost power as though we ran out of gas. We were able to slide somewhat to the side of the road. After a while, the car started again and we thought it was just some kind of fluke. We are senior citizens and do not drive a great deal however we thought all was well and in august we road on the highway 95 to connecticut and the exact same thing happened after we arrived and were pulling into a local mall, once again we had to be towed. If this had happened to us on 95 we would have been killed. About a week ago my daughter was driving at normal speed in this area locally and the same exact thing happened, at night and the car would not respond and a tow truck had to be called and the car towed to a service station. The next day we spoke to the mechanic and he said he drove the car all over and did testing and found nothing. This is a very serious matter. My daughter often has her baby in the car and so even more danger is involved. I contacted infinity and they said there is no recall but we saw many complaints by owners on the web search, infinity 35 2003, with the exact same complaint. Does there have to be fatality to force some action? *tr

While driving down the street, the vehicle shut completely off. I could not steer or anything. It was not the battery, alternator. It just stop right in the middle of the street; which is very dangerous. I called the used car dealer whom had just sold me the vehicle less than 6 month whom had the vehicle towed. They indicated they fixed one of the sensor & there was electrical issues. It drove for about a year, now it is continuously doing the same thing, shutting down while driving. The check engine light will come on & slip/ tcs. The vehicle have endangered my life about 5 different time for the same reason with my grandchildren in the car. I understand that per campaign nhtsa # 03v455000 - crank/cam positon sensor weld, my veh was part of this recall.. Infiniti i35 2002-2003 and i was not notified. It shows that the circuit board for the cran position sensor have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress acceleraton residue during the soldering process. This continously happent to my vehicle where my check engine warning light comes on , i have no power & the vehicle stops running with no warning during operation which is very dangerous. I've had the same problems that other infiniti i-35s have experienced in regards to losing power, engine cutting off and lack of braking. My car initially stalled while i was parked at a red light. After a few attempts to restart, it finally did. I made an appointment to see the dealer about this problem four days later. While driving to the dealer, my car engine lights all lit up and the car stalled and i had no braking ability. Fortunately, i was going only about 10 mph when this happened and was able to pull over to a lane without cars and applied my parking break to stop the car. After five minutes of attempting to restart, it finally did. I was only two miles from the dealer, so i slowly drove it there. They told me the problem was both crank sensors along with the crank shaft. I had them replaced at a cost of close to $1000. It seems to me that if there are so many complaints regarding this problem, it should be looked into as a safety recall issue. If i were going faster, i could have crashed into someone. One week before this happened, i was driving through mountain roads with many twists and turns. If this happened during that drive, i would probably be dead by now. *tr

While driving the car does not respond to the gas pedal by accelerating sometimes. I have been at very low speeds while turning a corner or at very high speeds while driving on the freeway and the car will not respond to the fact that i am pressing the gas. The only way that i can get it to accelerate is by slamming the brake quickly. Somehow the jolting of the car causing it to respond appropriately to the gas pedal and to accelerate. I am concerned because driving on the freeway and my car just starting to slow down randomly and not accelerate to keep up with the flow of traffic, and the only way to get it to do so is to slam on the brake is very dangerous and i cannot control how closely others follow me while driving. *tr

The car suddenly loses throttle control under normal driving conditions; the engine return to "idle speed". I was driving on the expressway and all of a sudden the check engine light came on and the car started slowing down. I pressed on the gas pedal all the way down but the car refused to accelerate. I managed to pull over and stop the engine. And then restarted the car and it seemed to work ok for a while and then did it again. I managed to get it to the dealer and it has been there since while they try to figure out why this is happening. This problem started happening about a year ago. The throttle body has been replaced 4 times in the last year; the throttle body contains the electric actuator for the throttle and the sensors that tell the computer the position of the throttle. I am really concerned about driving the car in traffic because it could suddenly "cut out" and lead to an accident. *tr

The brake pedal and accelerator pedal are close together. With my size 12 foot, it is easy to accidentally have my shoe on both pedals. The car has enough engine power to overcome the braking system, and lead to a collision. With the abs and tcs (traction control system) on this car, i would like to see an interaction to limit power if the abs is activated. My rear tires were trying to stop the car (almost dragging) and with the car under power (both pedals depressed) the abs was activated but i was still accelerating forward. If the tcs was limiting the power, i would have had enough time to stop or had enough time to remove my right foot off of the accelerator pedal and reposition my foot correctly and firmly on the brake pedal. *jb
