  • Recall 2019523 [Canada]: Airbag
Issue: on certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety risk: if the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective action: owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the passenger-front airbag inflator or airbag module replaced. Note: the canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Additional note: vehicles may have had the original front passenger airbag inflator replaced as a "like-for-like" replacement under recall 2016-103 (toyota recall #'s src 241 & src 242) as a temporary remedy while evaluating a permanent remedy. These vehicles will receive the permanent remedy passenger airbag assembly under this recall.

  • Recall 2016103 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger (frontal) airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: this recall supersedes recalls 2013113, 2014224, 2015197 and 2015269. Correction: all vehicles having not received a replacement inflator as part of the previous recall will now have a replacement inflator installed by dealers. For matrix model vehicles, dealers may replace the front passenger airbag assembly with one equipped with a newly specified inflator.

  • Recall 2015269 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the passenger (frontal) airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: this recall is superseded by recall 2016103. Please see recall 2016103 for more information. Click here for more information

  • Recall 2007014 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles, a manufacturing issue with the front lower ball joint could result in premature wear. If the vehicle is operated for an extended period of time in this condition, the ball joint may eventually experience excessive wear and looseness, resulting in increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering and noise in the front suspension. In extreme cases, when the driver continues to operate the vehicle in this condition, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front lower ball joints.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20210917

From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede ea15-001, which remains open.

  • Air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20150224

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe14-016 in june 2014 based on six inflator rupture incidents involving consumer owned vehicles produced by five vehicle manufacturers. All six vehicles were operated in florida or puerto rico at the time of the rupture and for the majority of their service life, and were equipped with inflators produced by takata, a tier-one supplier of automotive air bag systems.During the course of pe14-016, odi determined that five additional vehicle manufacturers used inflators of a similar design and vintage also supplied by takata. No evidence of field failures was found in vehicles produced by these five additional manufacturers.Nonetheless, at odis insistence, all 10 vehicle manufacturers initiated a regional recall within approximately two weeks of the opening of the investigation. The regions recalled initially included florida, puerto rico, hawaii, and the u.S. Virgin islands, areas with high absolute humidity and climatic conditions believed to be a significant factor in the inflator ruptures. As part of the recall actions, inflators removed from remedied vehicles are to be returned to takata for testing.Takatas initial test results on passenger inflators from remedied vehicles indicated a much higher than anticipated rupture frequency for inflators returned from florida.Accordingly odi requested all 10 manufacturers expand the regional recalls for passenger inflators to include other geographic areas where high absolute humidity conditions exist, including the gulf states and other coastal areas.Takatas testing of the passenger inflators to date continues to indicate this geographic area as having the highest risk, with no ruptures occurring from inflators returned from outside the expanded recall regions.During pe14-016 four additional passenger inflator field events occurred, all in vehicles from the same expanded geographic region. Also during pe14-016 four additional driver inflator field events occurred including two in vehicles from regions not known for high absolute humidity, specifically california and north carolina.Accordingly, odi requested all five of the affected vehicle manufacturers currently using the subject takata driver inflators expand to nationwide recalls.Significantly, neither of the affected vehicle manufacturers or takata provided any explanation to account for these two driver air bag inflator ruptures outside the area of high absolute humidity.Takata testing of returned driver inflators indicates a lower rupture frequency as compared to passenger inflator testing. All test ruptures reported by takata to date have occurred on inflators returned from high absolute humidity areas. The investigation now includes all manufacturers and vehicles known to be affected at this time.Odis investigation will focus on, among other things, root cause analysis, other potential defect consequences, identification of affected vehicles scope, and adequacy of the remedy. The five odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification numbers: 10537899, 10568848, 10585224, 10605877, 10651492

  • Frame corrosion investigation as of 20091006

This investigation was opened based on 20 reports of model year (my) 2000 and 2001 vehicles experiencing severe corrosion of the frame, resulting in either under-body mounted spare tire separation or rear brake failure. The failure report counts shown above are for my 2000 and 2001 vehicles only.By letter of november 16, 2009 toyota has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (09v-444) of approximately 110,000 model year (my) 2000 through 2003 tundra vehicles. The affected recalled vehicles were sold or are currently registered in the district of columbia and the states of ct, de, il, in, ky, ma, md, me, mi, mn, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, va, vt, wi, wv.Toyota alleges high amounts of "road salts" are used in these areas and excessive corrosion of the rear cross-member (to which the spare tire is mounted) can occur and cause the spare tire to separate from the vehicle and can also lead to rear brake failure.Toyota stated: "toyota has tentatively concluded that the root cause is a combination of factors, including usage in areas where road salt is applied, inadequate vehicle maintenance (i.E., not following the recommendations in the owners manual), the design of the rear cross-member, and manufacturing issues."the design of the rear cross-member is such that it is open on the top side and susceptible to accumulation of dirt, water and road salt.Manufacturing issues of the rear cross-member related to the coating process also affect its corrosion resistance.Toyota also states that owners of my 2000 through 2003 vehicles in states not covered by the recall will be notified on how to obtain the same inspection and repair as the recalled vehicles, free of charge.Further toyota states: "please note that while toyota has not determined a defect exists in 2004 through 2006 my tundra vehicles, toyota plans on initiating a field action in the near future to prevent future corrosion on those vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the affected region at no cost to the owner."by letter of january 8, 2010 toyota has notified the agency that it amended its defect information report for safety recall 09v-444 to include the "fuel tank mounting system" (i.E., fuel tank support straps and fuel tank mounting cross-members) in the safety recall.Toyota states: "toyota has not decided that the fuel tank mounting system in those vehicles contains a safety-related defect within the meaning of federal motor vehicle safety law.Rather, toyota is taking this action at odis request and to avoid future disagreement with odi with respect to this issue."my 2007 and newer tundra vehicles are not included in any of toyotas actions as the rear cross-member in those vehicles have been redesigned so that it is open on the bottom. The actions taken by toyota are sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the subject vehicles. The agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

  • Lower ball joint failure investigation as of 20060802

In a letter dated january 18, 2007, toyota notified nhtsa of a safety defect in model year (my) 2004 through 2006 toyota tundra and my 2004 through 2007 toyota sequoia vehicles produced between september 15, 2003 and november 17, 2006 (nhtsa recall no. 07v-013). According to toyota, ¿in the front suspension lower ball joint on the subject vehicles, due to possible improper finishing of the ball joint, such as the aspect of the ball stud surface, some ball joints may experience an incidental deterioration of the internal lubrication. This may cause the ball joint to wear and loosen prematurely, which could result in increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering, and noise in the front suspension. In extreme cases, if the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle and could cause loss of vehicle control.¿toyota will instruct owners to return their vehicles to any toyota dealer for replacement of the front suspension lower ball joints. This engineering analysis has been closed, as toyota is recalling the affected vehicles.Odi will monitor the effectiveness of the remedy and take further action if warranted.

  • Lower ball joint separation investigation as of 20060410

The office of defects investigations (odi) opened rq06-005 based on four consumer reports of alleged ball joint failure. The complaints allege that a front suspension ball joint separated while driving, which caused the suspension to collapse and resulted in a loss of vehicle control. All of these complaints involved the failure of a lower tension-type ball joint. During the investigation there were 39 (36.7 per 100,000 vehicles) complaints and 74 (69.6 per 100,000 vehicles) warranty claims for the 2004 model year (my) toyota tundra. Further analysis showed that the average failure mileage was 54,025 miles, and that of the 109 unique ball joint separation incidents, 64 (133 per 100,000 vehicles) were on four-wheel drive vehicles, which make up approximately 45% of the 2004 my population (106,346 vehicles). The remaining 55% are two-wheel drive vehicles which experienced a total of 45 (77 per 100,000 vehicles) ball joint separations. Also, throughout the investigation there surfaced additional failures which have prompted odi to upgrade this investigation to an engineering analysis and widen the scope of the affected population to include 2004-2005 my.This recall query has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea06-014) to further investigate this issue to assess the safety-related consequences, and to determine the scope of the affected population.

I had the dealer take my truck in for the frame recall. I asked for them to replace the frame because i was not comfortable with how they were handling it. Per the service record they filled in perforations and “undercoated. I did not believe that filling in existing perforations was the safest way to handle this. After brining the truck to a shop to check the steering we were told that they wouldn’t even put it up on a lift. The steering issue was that the rack and pinion steering was literally falling out due to the rusted frame. We drove this vehicle home and parked it. About a week later the spare tire fell out right onto our driveway. Needless to say, i am certain there are many more toyota trucks out there ready to fall apart on the road. We contacted toyota corporate several times to try to rectify this mishandling of our recall. We called and sent certified letters. We asked to share the cost of a new frame and they said no. We then had the truck towed to a shop who could do the work. They ordered a frame from toyota only to be contacted 2 months later saying that the frame was discontinued and they wouldn’t be sending it after all (we were willing to pay fir the frame and install because we had a useless and unsafe vehicle. We finally found a shop over an hour away who could rebuild/fabricate the frame and replace the fallen out steering etc. We had that truck towed about 60 miles away to have this work completed. This mishandling of the recall by toyota and their lack of customer care cost me a whopping $17,000! Again, unsafe tundras out there for sure. Please advise…this is the 2nd time i’ve filled out this form and never heard anything. Thank you in advance. I have tried for months to get this airbag replaced with no luck. I keep getting these recall notices with instructions i try to follow and here's the results so far: after texting "fix" to 877-427-0285 several times, nothing happened. Months later, i get some bizarre text from a number i don't recognize asking for my address saying i need to respond within 10 minutes. After asking who it was, another number texts me asking for the same info with no explanation as to who they are and they refused to say. I've called toyota of tumwater a few times and, at first, they couldn't schedule me for an appointment until some two months out. In the most recent call they needed my home address and phone number, which i'm not inclined to give but did in hopes of getting this resolved, but then they needed my full vin. If that's the case, why isn't it on the [xxx] recall notice? You listed the last 8 digits so clearly you have it. I texted "fix" to the number listed again this morning and finally get a response from "cindy" who asks for either the full vin or the recall id. I share the recall id and told i need to send the full vin. After a lot of back and forth, i'm told there's no recall option and i need to drive to another town. What do you mean there's no recall option? Why are these instructions included in these mailings? Do you people think we memorize vin numbers? You say this repair is "urgent" "serious injury" "death" then why are there so many difficult steps involved in getting this [xxx] thing replaced? Three easy steps to schedule is an outright lie. I've never had this much trouble with a recall. I've never had to provide a vin just to get a [xxx] appointment. I need help getting this resolved. The frame is rusted to the extreme that previous owners have already had it repaired on the drivers side just behind the front axle for the sway bar to mount. I have found the same issue of rust through the frame is now on the passenger side and bout to do the same thing. I also find extreme rust just in front of the rear axle. Extreme rust holding the transfer case in the vehicle is very thin also.

Started hearing clunking noise in truck. Made appointment with ase certified mechanic and he asked us to come back to the shop. The structure of the frame that holds the rack and pinion steering and anti-sway bar mount was gone. Both of the tops of the frame of the cross member that goes under the engine was missing. The frame rail under the cab is separating. He advised that this condition was a massive safety issue and that i should contact toyota and advise them. I called a dealership in zanesville and they advised they could not help because it was not a recall and toyota gave me a case number and transferred me to someone else who told me they could not help me. He also got a second opinion from another individual who also said that this is a safety issue that should be addressed by the manufacturer. I have more photos and i now know i can not drive a truck that i spent $24,000 on june of 2019. I am glad i did not wreck my vehicle and hurt my family or anyone else because of this issue. Please help me repair my truck. When we purchased the vehicle the factory undercoating was still in tact and this was not visible underneath.

Our tundra had a frame recall and it was the dealers decision on whether or not to replace dram or just cover up with undercoating. We disagreed with the decision to undercoat as the deal was showing signs of extensive rust. Now, our frame is extremely dangerous to the point of falling away from the body. Just about all parts under the truck have now suffered as well. We have never had the truck launch a boat, gone off road, or any other dangerous activities. Basically a train station and dump run vehicle. I am terribly disappointed with toyota and their poor handling of the situation. Basically they told me that i would be responsible for the super expensive frame replacement; too bad. Engine, body, and interior are in great shape. I need help as i 1) cannot afford to pay for their mistake and 2) can't afford to replace this truck and it is vital for us. Just found out today that the frame is disintegrating quickly when we brought car to shop for a steering issue which we now find out was caused by excessive rust. Thank you

Had battery checked, alternator check and other things wiring and every thing is working find. The dealership and other mechanic from another shop said they cannot find the problem unless it is acting up at the time they check it. My vehicle has major frame damage. There are large holes near the front crossmembers on both sides. I was told by toyota that the frame had been sprayed several years earlier. However, the frame has continued to rust severely and the coating has completely flaked off. The representative i spoke to stated that was the only resolution, and that nothing can be done. My case is not the only one. Even the dealer located near me states that this is a well known issue. Several years received new or repaired frames for the same issue. How can it be, that the same generation vehicle one year later is not eligible? My child rode countless times in that vehicle. What if something had happened? *tr

At that time they told the frame was good. I contacted the local dealer on 2/17 this year and they could not help me and that i would have to contact corporate. I contacted them same day and was told since they checked it once there was nothing else they could do for me. Hard to believe the frame could so completely deteriorate in that five year period. I know i'm not the only one having this problem. I hope something can be done to help all these people out.

We received a recall letter some time in november for our toyota tundra. I reached out to steven toyota in harrisonburg virginia shortly after receiving the letter. I was told they needed to order the part and would call back when received. I never received a call from steven toyota, and have been attempted to get this resolved with multiple calls to the dealership since early january. The calls to the service department either go to voice mail or are hung up on after multiple rings. I finally got a hold of a service person on january 30th, who said they would call back in ten minutes when they found out information. I never received a call. I attempted to call back today, and the call went to voice mail. I do have a record of attempted phone log on my phone. I called stevens back and told the receptionist i would be filing a complaint, and she responded " i'm sorry for your inconvenience."

I just purchased this vehicle on 11/16/2019 after doing research into the frame recall/limited safety campaign through toyota. I did not find any results into the vehicles frame corroding or breaking therefore i purchased the vehicle. I then spoke with toyota about the airbag recall on 11/18/2019 and 11/19/2019 and asked if there is/was a recall with the frame. They stated yes and there is nothing i can do because it has expired except for paying out of pocket for the replacement. Now, i noticed the frame has a large hole in it due to rust corrosion located behind the front left wheel. I called toyota corporation twice (11/18/2019 and 11/19/2019) and they told me i have to pay out of pocket for the fix. I then asked why, after searching their website with the vin , i was unable to locate the recall/limited service campaign. The representative stated " i can't answer that question". If i were able to see that the vehicle had that issue i would not have purchased it. Now the vehicle will not pass inspection and i cannot legally/safely drive the vehicle on the road. Toyota will not replace or fix the frame as they stated that it was a limited service campaign to have the frame sprayed with the anti-corrosion chemical and that the vehicle was not sprayed. Again i did not know this prior to purchase but now i am stuck with a vehicle that i just purchased and cannot drive it. Toyota has not offered a remedy for the situation i am in.

I had recently purchased a 2004 tundra with knowing about the recall for frame rust. I believed toyota had completed the recall and fixed the problem. Not long after owning the vehicle, i noticed a spot of rust bubbling through the anti corrosion coating. After further inspection, the frame is completely corroded through and cracked. This vehicle was meant to use for travel with my family in it and now it's not safe to drive at all.

When we drive the truck, when you press the brakes they often go all the way to the floor. Driving while on city streets as well as on the freeways. You have to pump them in order just to stop before hitting anyone. After driving 30 miles, we have to refill the master cylinder with brake fluid. We have taken it to the mechanic three times for them to find no leak. A friend looked at it and found that the master cylinder is leaking into the brake booster. We do not feel safe driving this vehicle in this condition. I have an article from fox news stating that our year 2004 toyota tundra is included, but when i called the dealer as well as entered it into your system, they state it is not. This is a dangerous condition and i strongly feel that our vehicle should be included in the recall. We have a new driver driving and will not let her drive this truck in this condition. We would feel much safer if this could be repaired. We have be fortunate to not have had an accident, but we have had many close calls, and the leak seems to be happening more and more often.

My 2004 toyota tundra sr5 4wd crewcab is showing significant sign of frame rust that's compromising the structural integrity of the frame and thus operational safety of the vehicle. Despite being barely used over the years and at just 144k miles, in certain sections of the frame there are holes where the frame has rusted through. The ride quality feels a bit wobbly, even after examination and rectification of other mechanical issues (suspension, joints, etc.) upon further research, this issue seems to be pervasive issue among first generation toyota tundras made in the us of this period. The result is very premature rust and complete disintegration of the truck frame. The primary cause was poorly made truck frames from a toyota vendor that ended in a class-action lawsuit. Toyota has offered extended recall to inspect and replace all affected truck frames as appropriate. I seek to be included in this program and proper assessment by an authorized toyota dealer. As this issue affects both the resale value of my vehicle and more importantly the operational safety of this vehicle, i request that the issue be expedited by the right authorities. Thank you!

Tundra frame rot and rust. In 2014, we purchased a 2004 toyota tundra with 90k miles on it for our 16 year old son to drive. This issue affects the seatbelt safety. When i try to latch the driver's seatbelt the release button is depressed and the seatbelt will not engage until i push the button down numerous times. This has occurred over the life of the vehicle and happens whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion.

Popping and snapping when turning or going over bumps in road led to a mechanical inspection. Discovered the frame right behind both front wheels is rusted/rotted such that half or more of it is literally gone. The popping/snapping apparently is caused by the frame kinking and moving at the weakened point and front and back sections contacting each other. I fear that the front part of the truck frame with the wheels, engine, and suspension attached could break and cause loss of vehicle control on the highway.

Our 2004 tundra with 65,000 miles was recently identified to have a rusty frame. We put it into the dealership to see what could be done. The dealership deemed it rusty to the point that it could not be coated and was a loss. We contacted toyota and they said the frame programe was for 2000-03 and is now expired and our 2004 wasn't covered. This is a major safety issue. There are hundreds of thousands of trucks on the road that are still affected by the faulty frames and toyota is not doing anything. This leaves consumers with a vehicle that is worthless and dangerous. A recall is needed to protect our families and the roads we travel on. I recently took my truck into tarbox toyota in rhode island for a state required inspection. I purchased my tundra from this dealership in 2004. The truck failed the inspection. A major defect was rust related holes in the frame. When the tarbox dealership installed a rust preventing undercoating 2-1/2 years ago, i asked and was informed that there were no holes in the frame. As you can tell by the attached pictures, the frame has substantial rust and a hole in the same areas experienced by other 2004 tundra owners. It is also obvious by the pictures that the undercoating installed to prevent rust failed and peeled off--and in fact covered up existing rust areas--rather than provide protection against future rust damage. I was informed by the dealership that toyota would not do anything to address the rust damage on my truck--or take responsibility for enhancing the rust damage caused by improperly coating the frame over existing rust. In fact, the advice offered was to just "lease a new vehicle." my safety concern is that in addition to myself, third party owners may not be aware that toyota covered up rusted frame damage with the undercoating installed over rust--and i do not know if there are additional holes in the frame that are not visible.

I called toyota corporate, and they told me they aren't going to stand behind it and won't do anything about it even though it's obviously a faulty component. This is quite frustrating as the body is in excellent condition with no rust, the motor has only 91,000 miles on it and runs like a gem, no leaks or drips, and the rest of the under body has only minimal rust. How can the frame look like it's been sitting in the back field for the past 10 years and the rest of the truck look next to new, and for toyota not consider the frame faulty?

We had the takata airbag recall service performed on our tundra on 12/19/14. Then, just a coupe weeks ago in june 2017, the airbag light came on when my husband was driving to work on the highway, and the light has not gone off since. We took it to a local auto shop to diagnose this past weekend, and they said it was an issue relating to the airbag recall service--they said they've seen this numerous times now, all in vehicles that had the airbag recall service done. Some of the common red flags they made us aware of were: horn is not working, as well as the cruise control. We took it to palm beach toyota in west palm beach, florida, this morning, and they diagnosed it as a spiral cable assembly that needs to be replaced--at a cost to us of $700 plus tax. That is something that should be covered under the recall, since it appears to be such a common occurance, it's obvious that this stems from the airbag recall service.

I purchased my 2004 tundra from a subaru dealer last summer and did not realize it was included in the many trucks which had premature frame rust. Toyota admitted it was an issue and stated that the previous owner had undercoating put on the truck paid for by toyota, however, clearly this was ineffective and a temporary band-aid for inferior metal. Toyota stated that they would not do anything to correct this problem, and as a college student, i need access to a safe vehicle. I am afraid to drive this truck as if it is struck by another vehicle, i do not believe it would withstand the impact due to severe frame deterioration. I understand the truck is from 2004, however, the rust on this frame is beyond a normal rate. Meanwhile, i am out $16,000 and the rust has overtaken the truck greatly within the past year. Toyota still refuses to help despite my gas tank needing to be replaced and my pictures of all of the deterioration. Despite doing my research and seeing how well-maintained this truck was, the frame itself has rusted beyond recognition and yet, the other parts remain relatively intact. This vehicle is otherwise in extraordinarily good shape and is and was well-maintained. It only had 58,000 miles on it when purchased and still has less than 80,000 miles.

Shift controller assembly bracket (toyota p/n 33501-0c011) has a design defect in that the part is cast without threaded bolt holes, relying on the installation of the screws to cut threads, by the act of installing the part at the factory, the radial outward force that the screw exerts creates a circumferential tensile stress around the hole, and microfractures in the cast aluminum. Over time, the microfractures cause failure of the part. When the part has finally broken, unknown to the owner, the vehicle may not fully engage into the park gear, such that the parking pawl does not engage, resulting in the vehicle potentially rolling which can cause property damage, injury, or death. My vehicle was parked, and began to roll as i was exiting the vehicle, and nearly pinned me under the vehicle. I barely escaped serious injury. I have since discovered toyota has developed a revised part (p/n 33501-0c012) apparently to address this dangerous design defect. Since owners do not see the part to know its broken (its concealed in the steering column), they will be completely unaware of the danger. Toyota should initiate a volutary recall or tsb to inspect the part, and replace it with the newer part if broken or showing evidence of fracture.

My tundra was under the frame rust recall in 2014. Toyota's claim was that the salt from the roads caused the severe corrosion. As we all know this was actually from the use of sub standard steel in the manufacturing process. My frame was actually de laminating, not just simple surface rust. When i had taken it in for inspection all that was done was wire brush the frame and spray with an undercoating. Now just a little under three years later the coating is peeling of along with more layers of metal. Most of the people i know with tacomas and tundras had their frames replaced when theirs were taken in. So now i have a truck that is no better than it was before. Also most of the chassis components are rusting out prematurely as well. My spare tire winch mechanism (carrier) bracket was about to rust through, luckily i caught this before i possibly could have dropped my spare when traveling on the interstate. I would appreciate someone from nhtsb taking a look at my vehicle to see the extent of what i am talking about. My vehicle only has 67,000 miles on it. I did contact toyota service about this, but their answer was you have what you have and they will not do anything further. I'm sure i'm not the only one in this situation. My frame should have been replaced. Thanks

Just purchased as a used truck, the body is in real good shape but the frame is rusted. Called toyota to be told that there was a limited service campaign to undercoat the frame but that campaign has ended. I tried to remove the hitch from the receiver a couple days after i took delivery of the truck, it would not come out. I crawled under the truck to see if it had been welded up or something to keep it from coming out, no weld just rust. I didn't notice the rust as it is under the back side of the frame at the receiver. The rest of the frame looks as if the undercoating is holding without additional rust. I hope that toyota will do right by this at some point.

I just got off the phone with a case manager name marquita from toyota. I had called three days earlier and was told a case manager would call. I received no phone call, and had to call them myself. My tundra is one of the vehicles affected by the lack frame protection resulting in a severely rusty frame. I had the frame inspected by a local toyota dealer and was told that the undercoating that was meant to solve the problem was poorly applied. Huge chunks are my frame are falling off and the frame is exposed causing it to continue to rust. The master technician brought me back to show how the frame was not originally prepped and the undercoating was thinly applied. So back to the conversation with the case manager. Marquita proceeded to tell me the undercoating was a one time remedy to the frame rust problem. Whether or not the undercoating was done well or not, toyota is not willing to rectify a poorly done "solution". The same rusty frame is under all the slime they applied and now it is going to continue to get worse. This is a known issue, and i believe toyota sued the manufacturer of the frames. And me and the other owners are left to rust.

Driving at low speed on city street. Front left wheel collapsed due to broken ball joint. All wheels had been replaced a couple of days prior by tire dealer. Vehicle had a recall in 2005 for ball joints which was completed at 75k miles on march, 2007. Current mileage is 299,525 miles on that replacement. I do not think many owners keep vehicle for that number of miles. However vehicle is in good condition and potential seems to exist for bearing failure. I do not think that wheel replacement was the cause though something may have loosened during wheel installation. I did not file a police report or insurance claim. No other vehicle was involved. In febraury 2014 i received a recall for the frame rusting on my truck, i brought the truck to toyota of keene for inspection and they undercoated the frame. They did a lousy job of undercoating and i complained to toyota, because they did what they were instructed to do they would not review or reinspect the vehicle. My tundra had 58,970 miles on it when it was undercoated for the rust issue, it now has 66,406 miles on it. The whole frame is rusted, so bad when i drove down my driveway big patches of rust fell off of it. Open the hood and you see nothing but rust. I do not feel like this vehicle is safe for the road but because of my health situation i cannot afford to get a new vehicle. All i want is the vehicle to be repaired the way it should have been in the beginning. The spare tire holder has rusted to the point of loss of the use, carrying the spare tire in the bed on the back of the truck, the gas tank door rusted right off so i had to get a new door, i just need someone to help resolve this unfortunate rust bucket of a situation.

Front suspension stabilizer bar rusted off of frame, resulting in large, structurally compromising hole in the welding location on the frame. This is an ongoing and escalating problem with the rusting of the chassis. I noticed a leak originating from the rear differential. Took it to the dealer on 10-20-16 where i was told the fuel tank straps had completely rusted off and nothing was holding the tank. The differential leak was also a result of excessive rust and that the entire rear end would need replaced for $2k. The dealer gave me a rental due to the safety hazard of the fuel tank support straps being completely gone. Another $400 dollar repair. The body of my tundra is in very good shape as far as rust goes. The "known" issue of excessive chassis corrosion was addressed by toyota with a "bandaid" recall where they sprayed the chassis with anti corrosive material which i had done. A year later most of this anti corrosive material has flaked off due to the application of the material over the existing rust on the chassis at the time. It is a good thing that the rear differential rusted out when it did because the fuel tank falling out would have been a major safety problem.

Noticed last week the frame of my truck was rotting on my driveway! Upon further inspection i discover large holes completely through my box frame. After cleaning out almost 5lbs of rotted frame i can no longer put my family and friends in this vehicle. That would make me irresponsible and negligent like the manufacturer! I purchased this vehicle in jan 2015 when it only appeared to be a surface rust issue. Recieved notice of the limited service campaign the month after it was over so toyota refused to even inspect it. Now this year i have holes you can put your hand through and toyota still refuses the frame is bad. In the limited service campaign toyota says "the condition is unrelated to and separate from normal surface rust". How could this be s voluntary limited service campaign and not a mandatory safety recall?? Sounds like a loophole created by design!

My side running board broke away from the frame due to the screws rusting out. So i crawled underneath to fasten them back in place. While underneath the truck i noticed a very disturbing and scary sight (see images attached). My frame is almost missing in one section underneath. So i got online to look and see if this is normal, and what i find is that this is not normal and i'm not the only one with this issue. Toyota knows that they have sub standard frames under these and other vehicles. They put out a campaign to replace the frames on 2000-20003 trucks, and also included a limited campaign to check on the frames of vehicles 2004-2006. This campaign ended in july of 2015 i bought the truck in july of 2014, but was never maid aware of this issue. When i called toyota to see why they said not there problem. I spoke to three different people with the complaints department i spoke with one who i did not catch there name on 6/14/2016 from 9:18am-9:49am where i was merely told they don't care that there's an issue all they are legally obligated to do is check and honor there current recall programs. The next lady i talked too who's name was autumn on 6/15/2016 from 12:36-12:42 told me the exact same things. Finally the last one i will speak too because i'm falling on deaf ears is christine at 2:54pm 6/16/2016 who i was told was a supervisor in the complaints department. Told me the exact same things. When i asked why they are not doing anything with these frames when they know there is a serious issue. I was merely told it's a company wide decision that we will take no further action. I take this as toyota does not care about the quality of vehicle they put on the road as long as there are still profits being made. I know there are several maybe hundreds maybe thousands of owners of vehicles that fall within this complaint i hope something can be done to help us.

Once on the lift we found the entire rear section was completely rusted out with several major parts just hanging from the frame. Toyota claims they sent recalls in 2015 however i did not get them. I did receive a very recent recall for an air bag and front coil springs, within a week the truck was taken in for the recall. At no time was i informed of the dangerous issue of the rear suspension. I called toyota to discuss the matter and was told they would not do anything to correct the problems. I am very lucky i did not have an accident because the rear components could have failed at any time while i was driving. Toyota will not accept any responsibility and they were quite rude when we spoke. Please inform me of any recourse i may have, the cost to repair my truck is in excess of $4,000. I am retired with a limited income and depend on my truck to pickup farm supplies at my home. I live in md and rely on the truck when it snows or the roads are icy. I thought i might have driven over the tire, and wondered how i didn't notice it in the road. When i came to the stoplight at the next intersection a little ways down the road, the car that had been driving directly behind me pulled up beside me, and the driver told me it was my spare tire that had fallen down from the bottom of my truck that was now sitting in the road back there. Luckily, no one had been injured, and all the cars had been able to avoid hitting it. After retrieving my tire from the middle of the road, i noticed the metal part of the spare tire hoist that holds the tire to the lift cable sitting a few feet away in the road. That metal piece was covered in rust, and the middle part of it was completely gone, having given way when the tire fell off. I did a quick search online, and there are countless reports of other tundra and tacoma owners experiencing the same problem. My tundra used to be operated in the northeast by a previous owner, and was part of the frame recall earlier this year for higher than normal rust corrosion on the frame. It warranted a complete frame replacement that was completed in july 2015. Not sure why this part was not included in that replacement, since it was certainly corroded as well! Thankfully, no one driving behind me when the tire fell off had been injured by hitting the tire, but imagine if one of those drivers had not been fully awake that morning!

Frame rot and rust. The gas tank fell out from under the truck while driving down the road (city street), the brackets holding the tank completely rusted in two. This happen after the frame protect spray was applied to the truck by the dealer 2 years ago. The frame is a mess, i'm worried about driving this truck because of it but i also can't trade it in because no one wants it. I'm happy to send pictures if needed.

Toyota has a recall for excessive rust and they did undercoat my truck. Yesterday when i pulled into my driveway i heard a squealing sound from under the hood. I checked and found my power steering fluid was low. I looked under the truck and saw a puddle. Further investigation showed that the steering rack has rusted through and power steering fluid streams out when you turn the steering wheel.

High pitch sound when i go to turn the steering wheel. Power steering fluid reservoir empty. Took to dealership and they said the rack and pinion is no good and has to be replaced at a cost of $1900.00. The issue i have is, i have a co-worker who bought the same truck i did, in the same month i did. His has 145,000 miles and his rack and pinion went out two weeks ago. Less than 10,000 miles between these incidents is quite a coincidence.

Anytime it rains water leaks in behind the dashboard on the passenger side, leaking water through the electrical wiring and into the floorboard of the truck there are lots of wires and a blower motor in this area where fire could cause any number of unsafe conditions. The cause has been narrowed down to one or both of two things. The first is a crack that originates in the seam behind the dash board of these vehicles due to production error. The second is rotting grommet plugs under the windshield wiper cowl. The first being much more severe as it could also cause structural integrity.

Takata recall - i was contacted by toyota concerning the air bag recall earlier this year. My first letter arrived on 7/18/2015. I have contacted toyota several time to find out when the airbag can be replaced. I was told they have no idea when the part will arrive and no idea when my car can be repaired. This is unacceptable. I use my truck for business and is currently losing money because i can not drive the vehicle. I informed toyota of this issue and was not given priority or any consideration for my inconvenience. This has not only cost me in time and money, but i feel the service i received is not acceptable as well. I wish i could sale the truck but nobody was a truck with a defective airbag. I am one unhappy customer due to this airbag recall. I can no longer say or support toyota as a good auto maker. At the end of the day, once the airbag is replaced i will sale the truck and will no longer purchase a toyota product. My tundra was part of the frame rust recall and passed their rust penetration test and was rustproofed by the dealer, toyota of grand rapids, june 8, 2015. The rustproofing was done very poorly and rust was still forming on the frame. I just had the tundra inspected by my mechanic for recommended repairs to keep it on the road and he found two large rust holes, pictures attached, on the frame, one on driver side and one on passenger side behind the front wheels. He said that in a hard braking situation the frame could crack causing loss of control and steering. I've tried contacting toyota and they said the dealer has to be contacted and this has been done twice with no results. The recall is now closed and i should have had a new frame installed the first time. The tundra has 129,000 miles on it and we use it for 5th wheel towing, not anymore. I need your help in resolving this problem. You have 128 complaints for structural issues on this vehicle, all with mostly the same issue rust through on the frame.

It was unknown if a police report was filed or not and there were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 114,000.

After i purchased my tumdra used i noticed the frame on this truck has a severe rust issue which i believe could be a safety issue. Large chunks of rust are coming off of the frame i spite of having been 'treated' by toyota in 2015 during a recall campaign . I poked the frame with a screw driver in one location and was able to poke a hole in frame since it was so weak from rusting. I fear the truck breaks in 1/2 or doesn't provide protection in collision. This truck only has 75k miles and is in really good condition with the exception of the frame which is way worse than normal surface rust i've seen. I have read that many other owners are having the same experience. We need help getting toyota to provide a remedy to make our vehicles safe again. Pictures attached

Left front ball joint on 2004 toyota tundra 4wd failed and pulled out of socket with no warning (e.G. Loose steering, noise, or vibration) at approx. 2 mph in parking lot. This caused the left axle to pull out and hit the ground damaging the splines. There was an earlier recall for this same problem and the recall service was performed by installing a "new" replacement ball joint in 2009. Luckily we had just exited a freeway traveling at 65 mph. Since there was no "accident" and no "comprehensive" damages, the auto insurance did not cover any of the $1,200 damage or $200 rental car expense. *tr

Toyota recalled my tundra for a rusted frame. Dealer took possession of the vehicle in april. They provided a rental car, but no other update or contact until a week ago when the frame arrived. Now nearly complete, they want to charge me $8000 for additional parts not covered by the recall which they claim is necessary to make the vehicle pass inspection and roadworthy yet many of these parts were unaffected prior to the recall. At no time did toyota ever inform us of additional costs not covered by the recall. Two of the items are critical to the value and drivability of the car. They include the rear axle and differential which i believe failed due to the same rusted issues as the frame. The additional parts affected were the brakes. The front brakes seized from 6 months of non use and maintenance by the dealer, the rear brakes were failed by fluid leak from rear axle while in possession of the dealer for 6 months. In short, after getting a new frame, the dealer was holding trying to charge $8000 in extra repairs or they would return me a truck that had a new frame but was still inoperable in the condition under which it was stored by the dealer. The dealer and toyota were responsible for maintaining the vehicle and returning it in as good or better condition than they received it, but instead it lost 1005 of its value. I cant drive it, i cant sell it. It has a new frame but now has no differential or brakes it has lost all marketable value, where it could have been traded in or sold prior to the "frame replacement" that was supposed to right all the wrongs" of toyota's doing. I have full service records showing responsible ownership of the truck for the last 10 years. Needs to make it right and fix my truck so i can drive again, or buy me out, or offer me a trade allowance that is fair and equitable. This toyota case number is 1504140934.

2004 toyota tundra has significant frame rust. Took to dealer they sprayed it with an under coating which within 1 year all fell off due to rust underneath the coating. The toyota dealer then re sprayed and now its falling off after the vehicle say in a garage without being driven. Also the rear axel housing rust straight through and now doesn't old any fluid. I filed a case with toyota and they said they completed there part of the recall. Which was apparently paint over the rust.

Dealer just informed me that my rotted frame needs to be replaced. Dealer insisting that truck is ?Safe? And is safe to drive for the next 90 days until the frame parts arrive. Dealer is refusing to provide me with a safe loaner for these 90 days. Dealer is refusing to provide criteria used to determine the safety of my frame and truck. Dealer admitted via email the bed of the truck as well as the spare tire carrier was ?Not removed during inspection?. Dealer stated (via email) that ?Once the >10mm hole was discovered, there was no need to continue the inspection because the frame would have to be replaced.? Dealer is refusing to tell me what criteria was used to determine how safe the vehicle was to drive. Dealer refusing to provide the frame inspection report after many requests. Says ?It doesn't exist?. Dealer refused to give frame safety inspection criteria used to determine a frames safety. Contacted customer service and asked for same criteria. 1st response was ?Its proprietary information that i cannot give you?. After pushing the issue farther, and stating that all i wanted was a safe loaner car to drive while my truck is waiting on a frame, they told me to contact dealer for the criteria i am requesting because they have been given that information from toyota. Contacted dealer again, after multiple emails asking the same thing, eventually his response was ?There is no criteria?. I am denied the use of a safe loaner because the dealer is saying that my truck is safe to drive (based on non existent criteria as well as an incomplete frame inspection). According to the flowchart, if my frame needs to be replaced, a loaner will be provided for up to 60 days (or even longer), if parts availability is causing a delay. Nowhere does it state that i am only entitled to a loaner if at my dealers discretion deems it as "unsafe to drive". *tr

11/2014 i brought my vehicle to toyota dealership for the frame recall. It was inspected and returned to me with a summary that all was well and the frame was in very good condition. 6 months later i had it back into the dealership for some repairs to brakes and inspection sticker. Nothing was mentioned about the frame condition at that time. 1 week later, i was traveling with my family in the vehicle when the front gas tank strap snapped, while we were entering the highway. I was able to stop vehicle before any disaster occurred. I secured the tank and returned my truck home. I did not pursue any action at the time because of distress and anger over the incident. I brought truck to dealership that performed the recall on behalf of toyota corp. The dealership inspected the frame and immediately admitted to fact that the recall work was not performed correctly. The etchant was not properly removed and the frame was recoated. The gas tank straps were also compromised by the etchant. 6 months after the recall work was performed the tank strap snapped. I have opened a case # with toyota, but they informed me that it was not there fault and they were not going to help me. My son borrowed my 2004 tundra to help a friend move. When he arrived, he walked to rear of truck and the spare tire fell to the ground. Upon checking i found that the winch mechanism that holds the spare tire was rotted. This is definitely a safety hazard. I have read horror stories about tires falling off while in traffic and serious injuries incurred. There should be a recall on this. *tr

Rust all over the undertruck, even the catalytic converter is rusted. I was part of that recall and the dealer is going to spray the frame to stop the corrosion. Can the corrosion process ends with the spraying? *tr

I have recently received a frame recall notice due to excessive corrosion which i addressed at the local dealership. I was informed that the rust had not perforated the frame and that it would be treated to prevent further rusting. When i picked up the truck at the dealership the associate advised me that the recall was done and that a full safety inspection was completed which revealed no other problems. When i returned home i looked under the truck to inspect the frame and noticed that both sway bar links had corroded and broken off . I also subsequently took the vehicle to an alignment shop because i noticed the steering wheel was not straight and was told by the shop that the truck could not be aligned. I was told that the vehicle was very dangerous to drive and to bring it to the dealership immediately which i did. The dealership service department discovered that the steering shaft coupling was so corroded that they needed to replace it and do a wheel alignment. I am concerned that this may become a common safety issue with the tundra which seems susceptible to excessive rusting and am requesting that this issue is investigated an a recall issued if necessary. *tr

I am disabled and i keep receiving recall notices about airbags, and frame recalls from toyota, but the local dealers tell me that they do not have the parts to fix them. I am unable to carry anyone in the passenger seat because of safety advisories and this is affecting the value of my vehicle, and risk of injury to myself and any passengers i may carry, and insurance coverage because of the recall notifications. I suffered diligently to pay for this vehicle and now i find it's an unsafe piece of junk that i cannot use. I really want this vehicle fixed or replaced with one that is not unsafe.

Frame recall- my 2004 tundra was recalled for the frame rusting out. Toyota deemed that a new frame was not needed and did the crc treatment which is absolute junk and only causes the frame to rust even worse. I want a new frame installed by toyata and any other rusty part- all should be replaced free of charge
