TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN Group: Bulletin No: Issue Date: Vendor Ref.: 0-GENERAL SB-15-031 8-26-2015 HMM-150707-J1 STRAINER FOR DEF TANK FILLER INLET SUBJECT VEHICLES: 11MY-14MY Conventional Trucks (238, 258, 268, or 338) and 12MY16MY COE (Cab over Engine) Trucks (195, 195h) Note: This service bulletin is provided as technical information and is not authorization for a warrantable repair. OVERVIEW: Foreign debris in the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tank may cause the SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) system to malfunction. This can result in DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) P20E8 or P20E9 - DEF Pressure Abnormality. An inlet strainer for the DEF tank has been made available to prevent foreign material from entering the DEF tank. BEFORE YOU BEGIN - Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you begin the work. - Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this publication. These alerts help to avoid damage to components, serious personal injury, or both. - Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface. - Place the gear shift lever in "Neutral" or "Park". - Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake activation. - Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch. - Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes. - Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. - Always wash hands thoroughly after handling DEF system components. Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface. 2. Confirm the engine is stopped, the ignition switch is in the off (LOCK) position, and the key is removed. 3. Apply the parking brake. 4. Chock all of the wheels. TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN Group: Bulletin No: Issue Date: Vendor Ref.: 0-GENERAL SB-15-031 8-26-2015 HMM-150707-J1 REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Remove the DEF tank filler cap. 2. To install the inlet strainer, the existing inlet restrictor will need to be removed. There are two different types of inlet restrictors used on Hino vehicles. Refer to the images below to determine if Type A or Type B is present. Follow the appropriate removal process indicated in step 3A or 3B. TYPE A TYPE B TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN Group: Bulletin No: Issue Date: Vendor Ref.: 0-GENERAL SB-15-031 8-26-2015 HMM-150707-J1 3A. Use needle nose pliers to squeeze and release the two locking tabs to allow the inlet restrictor to be pulled from the DEF tank. Discard the old inlet restrictor. 3B. Use a small flat blade screw driver to lift each of the two lock tabs. Once lifted, insert a pick or small Phillips screw driver into the hole to hold the two locking clips while removing the inlet restrictor. Discard the old inlet restrictor. 4. Slide the new inlet strainer into the DEF tank, aligning the locking tabs in the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions. Push the strainer into place until a click is heard. NOTICE: Be careful not to allow foreign materials to enter the tank during installation. Ensure that the strainer is free of foreign material before installation. During service, if the strainer becomes clogged, it can be removed by hand for cleaning as shown. Use only distilled water to rinse any debris from the strainer before reinstallation.
