Known Recall Investigations
  • Vehicle commanded engine shutdown investigation # RQ14005

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this rq to investigate allegations that the scope and remedy of safety recall 13v-535 were inadequate. Recall 13v-535 was limited to a relatively small population of "ambulance package" vehicles and odi received complaints of pickup trucks and "fire engine prep package" vehicles being affected by the same defect. Ford manufactured approximately 555,985 subject vehicles between february 22, 2010 and january 30, 2015 that may be affected by defective egt sensors and powertrain control module (pcm) software calibration. The subject vehicles are equipped with four (4) egt sensors to monitor engine operating conditions. An egt sensor fault may produce false exhaust over-temperature signals. If these signals are produced, the powertrain control module (pcm) implements a failure management effects mode (fmem) and the driver receives a "stop safely now" (ssn) system warning on the instrument cluster message center. The fmem triggers a 70% reduction in available engine power over a period of no more than 45 seconds, during which it may not be possible to accelerate or maintain vehicle speed. The pcm then commands the engine to shut down when vehicle speed reaches approximately 1 mph. There is no immediate restart capability. Depending on the pcm software calibration, ignition key position and ambient temperature conditions, the engine may not restart until the end of a 10-60 minute "cool down" period.Ford and its component supplier(s) made numerous changes to the pcm software calibration and the design, material and manufacture of the egt sensors over the period of subject vehicle production. This continuous product improvement affected vehicle performance regarding the alleged defect. Ford acknowledges the defect condition in the subject vehicles but argues that an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety is limited to "ambulance package" and "fire engine prep package" vehicles where commanded shutdown could impact emergency response and patient care. Ford also argues that the defect trend is in decline. Ford also initiated a new safety recall (15v-175) to address the 13v-535 remedy concerns in the "ambulance package" vehicles and "fire engine prep package" vehicles. The 15v-175 remedy reprograms the pcm with a new software calibration that stops a single egt sensor fault to cause the vehicle to enter the fmem shutdown mode.Ford also initiated an epa emissions recall (14e03) for all subject vehicles that reprograms the pcm with the software calibration employed in safety recall 15v-175. Finally, ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (15m01) providing extended warranty coverage of 8 years or 80,000 miles for the the egt sensors on certain my2011-2012 subject vehicles.Due to the epa emissions recall, that had a 66.6% completion rate in fords december 2015 progress report to the epa, the defect trend is in decline. Odi is not aware of any crashes, deaths or injuries related to the alleged defect.Odi believes the alleged defect poses a safety risk but notes that the epa emissions recall is addressing the safety problem.Compelling issuance of a duplicate recall would not represent a wise use of agency resources.Accordingly, this recall query is closed. This action is not a finding that no defect exists and nhtsa will take further action if such action is warranted.

At highway speeds the front end may start a severe wobble of the steering and tires upon hitting a bump or rough section of the road that initiates the wobble. No warning lamps. The only way to stop the wobble is to slow to 20 or 25 mph. This has happened 4 times so far with my 2014 f350 and once with a heavy 5th wheel in tow. Safety is severely at risk due to potential loss of control and/or slowing on the freeway which will put nearby drivers at risk of collision. This problem is documented by many ford superduty truck owners. I have not had my vehicle inspected as i understand most that have had expensive repairs done have not had the problem fixed. The first wobble incident occurred with truck mileage at only 18,000 miles - would not expect significant component wear at that low mileage. Truck is not used for heavy or rough work - just pleasure and occasional tow of small 5th wheel trailer.

"death wobble"...Severe...So far 9 times!!! 8 times while traveling at 70+ mph and once at 45. Usually happens when on a slight turn to the left and meets a small to medium bump as you pass over a bridge to road connection for example! A small chug hole will set it off too! Welcome to houston! So far it has never happened on a straight away...Fingers crossed. In my work i tow a 36' travel trailer racking up about 40-60 thousand miles a year! Again...So far it has not happened while towing! My expenses are adding up trying to repair the problem...Replaced the track bar, shocks, stabilizer damper and had the wheels balanced and rotated...Nothing so far has worked! Every mechanic i have been to all are guessing at a solution...Youtube is full of videos on solutions but you need to have pretty deep pockets to try them all...None are definitive! As a gm guy all my life i decided to buy a 2014 ford f350 heavy duty 4 wheel drive. The truck is beautiful inside and out! I love the styling much better than chevy or dodge! Big mistake! After hearing countless advertising commercials drilling into everyone's "built ford tough" i can tell you "fords" advertising is extremely misleading! As an advertising professional i can tell you that "over promising and under delivering" is the kiss of death! Not backing up your product is even worse!!! Everyone knows bad news travel ten times faster than good! I would be willing to donate a $1000.00 towards a nationwide billboard campaign with one message 'don't buy fords!"! Back to gm i go as soon as i can find another sucker to buy this beautiful piece of garbage! However, unlike ford i have a conscience and would not do that. Instead i will wait see if your class action lawsuit gains traction and a reasonable solution is reached! Good luck to you and count me in! Kindest regards, don

2014 f-350 front end / steering shaking known as the death wobble. Only way to stop the shaking was to reduce speed under 50 mph. This has previously occurred in 8/2018 with approx 116k miles on the truck. Vehicle was checked more than once at service location, including brakes, tires, alignment,...But could not find a problem. Different "fixes" were tried, which included track bar and tie rod replacement. After 2nd track bar and ball joint replacement, issue seemed to be resolved. However, the death wobble has returned. Current mileage is no approx 175k miles. This is a known issue by ford, yet there have been no recalls to fix the issue. Truck will be returning to repair facility this week, costing more money out of my pocket, to hopefully put another band-aid on the problem.

When driving down the highway interstate 25 in colorado. Traveling approximately 75 mph. I experienced severe vibration in the front end of the truck. Vibration would not go away until i slowed to almost a complete stop. This only happened after i hit a bump on the highway causing the front end to start vibrating and it progressively got worse. I recently had two of my tire rods changed new brakes put on the truck in my tires rotated and properly inflated. These cannot be causing the problem there must be something else happening.
