Known Recall Investigations
  • Failed door check arm attachment point investigation # PE23013

On july 7, 2023, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe23-013 to investigate instances of check arm bracket failure in the front doors in model year (my) 2020-2021 ford escape vehicles. At the time of opening, odi received 118 vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) alleging this failure. To date, odi has received 593 voqs alleging this failure, with a variety of reported failure conditions. The most common reported failure condition was reduced door functionality (e.G. Door was more difficult to open or close) and the least common was inadvertent door opening. Other reported failure conditions include inability to latch and inability to open. Three voqs reported injuries, one of which requiring medical attention. Odi conducted a consumer survey which yielded an additional 44 injuries (although the voqs did not indicate any injury), none of which requiring medical attention. All these injuries were bumps/bruises from the door closing on occupants’ arms and legs while entering and exiting the vehicle. The function of the check arm system is to provide hold-open assist at specific angles and to assist with door closing energy. It does not provide vertical support of the door and is independent of the latching mechanism. This failure is progressive and detectable by vehicle occupants. Consumers commonly report hearing a popping or snapping noise when opening and closing the door. This noise is caused by some of the welds between the bracket and door structure failing and detaching. There may also be visible damage present to the welds in the door structure. Continued use of the door may result in all welds separating and the bracket fully detaching from the door structure, which could lead to increased resistance in closing and opening the door, restrained window operation, and the door freely rotating when open. Odi inspected 3 consumer vehicles in the field, and 2 test vehicles at ford’s testing facility. The test vehicles were retrofitted with the failed component. Odi observed an increased door closing resistance, however, was unable to reproduce an inadvertent open while parked or driving, or a failure to latch or open condition. Testing also verified this failure did not affect the door ajar warning system. This system provides an audible and visual warning in the event a door did not achieve primary latch position. Ford has provided details on a one-time-repair customer satisfaction program (23b56), stating that they will provide customers with a letter, currently targeted for march 2024, to bring their vehicle to a ford dealership for a proactive repair. Dealers will inspect the door check arm welds for damage and will either provide a rivet plate to reinforce the existing door check arm or will provide a replacement door, depending on the level of damage present.  customers will be eligible for reimbursement if they previously paid to repair this issue. In view of the high detectability of failure, low potential hazard to drivers, and ford’s customer satisfaction program to provide a proactive repair, this preliminary evaluation (pe) is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the odi reports cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.

  • Rearview camera fmvss 111 noncompliance investigation # RQ21002

On september 23, 2020, ford motor company (ford) filed a noncompliance recall report under 49 cfr part 573 (nhtsa recall no. 20v-575), recalling 620,246 model year (my) 2020 ford f-150, f-250, f-350, f-450, f-550, explorer, mustang, transit, expedition, escape, ranger and edge, and lincoln nautilus and corsair vehicles for a noncompliance with federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 111, rear visibility. Fords recall described the noncompliance as insufficient electrical conductivity within the printed circuit board (pcb) internal to the camera leading to intermittent rearview camera operation. The supplier of the cameras was magna electronics.According to fords chronology in the part 573, during the period february-april 2020, ford identified and monitored warranty claims pertaining to intermittent or inoperative rearview cameras. Ford reviewed supplier product changes, focusing on changes introduced by the supplier in the october-november 2019 time frame. The part 573 stated that the issue was brought to fords critical concerns review group (ccrg) for review on may 12, 2020.On july 7, 2020, nhtsas vehicle research and testing center (vrtc) informed the office of defects investigation (odi) of a trend of my 2020 escape vehicles with rearview camera malfunctions. Odi contacted ford the next day, providing five vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) alleging inoperative rearview cameras. On july 15, 2020, ford met with nhtsa to discuss the rearview camera issue. In a subsequent august 24, 2020 meeting, odi and nhtsas office of vehicle safety compliance (ovsc) met with ford to discuss the recall status and additional voqs. Ford presented rate and scope data for many of its my 2020 products during the august 2020 meeting indicating high failure rates for certain models. This rq is being opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of fords rearview camera recall (20v-575), and fords compliance with reporting requirements. The subject reports referenced in the opening resume are identified by the following odi reference numbers which can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov: 11349813, 11344126, 11342696, 11341486, 11340254, 11337274, 11331444, 11330875, 11329235, 11316960, 11343521, 11341884, 11337226, 11344018, and 11339573.

When at a stop light upon acceleration the car is very sluggish. I have noticed if i turn the air off there seems to be slightly more power. I feel the safety in this comes when a vehicle is moving excessively slow that it causes a potential threat to being involved in an accident.

The rear liftgate, while open (and while i was loading/unloading items), will randomly close on its own. It does signal it is about to through very low volume beeps but it has done this some 20 times randomly in the last week. Several days ago it closed on my head, taking off a slice of skin on my scalp, knocking me down face forward onto/into the rear bumper, injuring my face/upper lip as well. This is a known/documented issue on many vehicles via many ford escape forms, which suggest having the key fob in your pocket or on your person is the culprit and sends the car into a frenzy.

The contact owns a 2020 ford escape. The contact stated that the bracket that connects the driver’s side door to the body of the vehicle had fractured causing the driver’s side door to not close properly. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed with needing the door bracket to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of failure and informed the contact that the vin was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 16,655.

The front seats in this car have been repaired once by the front dealer. It did not work and three calls to escalate to ford headquarters have never been returned. The seat is so uncomfortable ( feels like riding on a buckboard) that after a couple hour trip, it pinched a nerve in my hip and my slow response to applying the brake almost caused an accident. The emergency braking system took over and stopped my car. I now have sciatica because of this seat and am being treated for it. It has been into the dealer at least four times and even the service manager tried the seat and agreed that there is a problem. He has been helpful, but ford is blocking any solution.

Titanium or sel editions have a 10 speaker b&o stereo with a 6x9 ‘subwoofer’ located in the right rear cargo area. The speaker hums/vibrates/shakes loudly through all volume levels - it is a known issue with ford that the screws securing the speaker in to its mount are cheap and often come loose, casing loud vibrations. Tightening them back up is time consuming and only a temporary fix
