  Ford motor company (ford) is recalling certain 2016-2019 explorer vehicles. The retention pins could loosen and allow the roof rail covers to detach from the vehicle.

• Recall 141710 [USA]: A seat back with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  Ford motor company (ford) is recalling certain 2018-2020 f-150 and 2019-2020 f-250, f-350, f-450, and f-550 super duty pickup trucks, and 2018-2019 ford explorer, 2019-2020 expedition, and 2020 escape vehicles equipped with driver and/or passenger's manual front seat back recliner mechanisms. Also included are certain 2020 ford explorer and lincoln aviator vehicles equipped with rear outboard seats and manual seat back recliner mechanisms. The recliner mechanisms may be missing the third pawl required for seat back strength, resulting in a loose seat back. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) numbers 202, "head restraints" and 207, "seating systems."

  Issue: on certain vehicles, seats with a manual recliner may not meet the strength requirements of canadian regulations. A seatback with reduced strength may not properly restrain an occupant in a crash. Safety risk: a seatback that moves in a crash could increase the risk of injury. Corrective actions: ford will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a ford or lincoln dealer for an inspection of the driver and front passenger seat recliners. For 2020 model year explorer and aviator, dealers will inspect the rear outboard seats. The seat structures will be replaced as required.

• Recall 2019368 [Canada]: Electrical
  Issue: on certain mxv wheelchair accessible vehicles, if the switch for the "tilt & go" front seats is held in the "on" position too long, the wires could overheat and melt. This could cause a short circuit. Safety risk: an electrical short circuit could create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners in writing and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to have this problem fixed. The circuit will be modified to add a solenoid timer to reduce the chance of overheating the wires.

• Windshield trim panel detachment investigation # PE23001

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 164 complaints on model year 2011-2019 ford explorer vehicles alleging a windshield trim panel on the vehicle detached while driving at highway speeds. Some of the complaints reported that the driver of the vehicle following behind the subject ford vehicle allegedly was startled when the trim piece hit the windshield and momentarily lost control of the vehicle. • Windshield trim molding item detachment investigation # PE23001

  On january 27, 2023, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe23-001 to investigate allegations of a-pillar trim panel detachment on model year (my) 2011-2019 ford explorer vehicles. At the time of opening, the office had received 164 vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) reporting this failure. Odi has received 671 voqs regarding this failure, including 1 alleged crash and 2 alleged injuries. Some consumers have reported that the failure occurred while they were driving at highway speeds, with the detached trim panel entering the path of travel of the vehicle behind them, requiring the driver of the following vehicle to take evasive action. It is noteworthy that motorists who experience this type of road hazard are less likely to accurately identify the subject vehicle the item detached from and report the event to the nhtsa. In its april 17, 2023 response to odi’s information request, ford provided 175 consumer complaints (including field reports) and 14,162 warranty claims related to a-pillar trim panel detachment. Ford relayed that the subject vehicles utilize a plastic a-pillar bracket, which is bolted to the vehicle structure during assembly. The a-pillar trim panel is attached to the bracket utilizing 7 plastic clips. Contributory factors which have been identified by ford as leading to the subject defect include incomplete installation at the assembly plant, inadequate part stack up, damage to fasteners during installation, and failure to follow proper repair procedure during windshield replacements or other services. On january 19, 2024, ford filed safety recall 24v-031 for my 2011-2019 ford explorer vehicles to address the subject defect. In the part 573 safety recall report, ford identified that a detached a-pillar trim panel can create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall remedy includes an inspection of the existing a-pillar trim panel and, if necessary, the replacement of the component. The remedy a-pillar trim panels will be installed with an additional adhesive for robustness and utilize an inspection procedure to ensure full engagement of all the retention clips during installation. In view of the recall action being taken by ford, odi is closing this preliminary evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. • Hertz/vehicles rented with open recalls investigation # AQ22003

  Nhtsa is opening this audit query to investigate whether the hertz corporation (hertz) has complied with the requirements of the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act (safety act). The safety act requires, among other things, that a rental company shall not rent a vehicle subject to a safety recall unless the recall remedy has been performed. 49 u.S.C. ? 30120(i).Nhtsa is in receipt of information that indicates hertz rented vehicles to customers without having performed required recall repairs. Strong exhaust smell in the front cabin while driving 40+ mph. Resulting dizziness and nausea symptoms. Vehicle taken to dealer for diagnosis. Odometer reading 10560

Roof rail cap flew off on highway. Complained of issue was told its under investigation but no fix is available

On june 18, 2021 while driving we noticed a particular smell inside the vehicle while driving and stationary. When we exited the vehicle the smell was exact same smell as the exhaust coming from the car. All doors were closed to include rear hatch as it was 110 plus outside. We had the a/c on recirculating mode and wife complained of a headache and mentioned she had been getting headaches several times while in the vehicle and i too had a headache. I searched the web and came across the same in issue with this generation explorer and people had stated the 2018 models had the same complaint but were not recalled. For the remainder of the trip we rolled windows down and used fresh air to clear to vehicle of the exhaust smell. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer as we have been driving another vehicle due to the safety risk of co2 poisoning.

The contact owns a 2018 ford explorer equipped with hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires. Size: 255/50r20 105h, dot number: 5mnc 1ah 1218. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the 2 rear tires were prematurely worn out or will get a rejected sticker if not replaced. Owner went to baystate ford dealer in easton ma where the failure was confirmed, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The contact was told by this dealer service that neither they or the manufacturer would offer any assistance for this failure.

The contact owns a 2018 ford explorer equipped with four hankook tires, tire line: ventus s1 noble s2, tire size 255/50/r20. Dot number: 5mnb1ah1218. The contact stated while having a routine inspection was informed that the rear driver and passenger tires needed to be replaced due to unusual wear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they were unable to determine the failure cause. The manufacturer was not notified. The tire mileage was 50,000. The failure mileage was 14,000.

Roofrack became detached while driving on freeway. Almost flew off in traffic and had to hold onto it while driving until i was able to pull over and tape it down. Almost flew off road while holding it down.

Air conditioning failed. Dealer says its compressor, but they have had it for a month and cannot fix it. Last excuse was a bolt fracture. Bolt fracture? My previous 2013 explorer had a fire in the ac unit at 9 thousand miles.

Windshield trim piece came off while traveling on the freeway.

Today i noticed that the trim on my windshield was cracked, broken and falling off. My car has about 40k miles on it and would not have expected this to fall apart already. This past year i may have driven my car 5000 miles. It has not been in any storms or eight wind situations. I have been hearing a strange noise in the front but did not connect this to a trim molding issue. It is dangerous because it could fly off and hit a pedestrian,motorcycle rider or bicycle rider or even another vehicle.
