Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005
Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date. The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 mazda tribute. Upon purchasing the vehicle used from scott evans nissan (725 bankhead hwy, carrollton, ga 30117, 770-832-8222), the power assist failed without warning. When the vehicle was restarted, the power assist began to work again. Upon purchasing the vehicle, the power assist failed intermittently without warning. When the contact first experienced the failure, he contacted beyer mazda (4015 valley pike suite b, winchester, va 22602, 540-931-9520) and was informed that the vehicle was previously included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v282000 (steering); however, the recall had already been performed on the vehicle. The dealer offered no further assistance. The contact called flow mazda of charlottesville (1289 stony point rd, charlottesville, va 22911, 434-296-4147) to verify the information and received the same information that he was given from the previous dealer. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 82,767.

Car will lose power during driving. Engine begins to sputter, which results in a jerking motion of the vehicle. Pressing the gas does nothing. Engine revs according to rpm dial, but car will not accelerate. Rpm dial will continue to show engine revving while idling (after i pull over and put car in park). This has happened twice - 8/22/19 and again 8/27/19. Diagnostic run on car on 8/22/2019 lists no error codes, for me to fix issue. Video taken, but still images wont help.

Parked vehicle in garage after driving, next morning the battery was fully charged but would not try to start with a stop safely now warning displayed...This has happened three times now - spent $600 and a tow bill first time. Ford said they replaced a leaking thermostat and reprogrammed it (which i do not believe). Next morning, same problem but later (3 days later) it started, drove it several times, next morning it would not try to start again. Totally broke down now with a fully charged battery. I think it is a faulty wiring in the battery harness not communicating with the hybrid battery to start as i have read about this problem on the internet with recalls for other ford hybrid vehicles that tell the same story. Please issue me a recall for this vehicle; without it, the vehicle is a total loss to me as others get recalls for this very frustrating problem that is no fault of my own.
