  • Recall 2013221 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, the secondary clutch disengagement switch may have been omitted during vehicle assembly or, in some instances, removed during servicing. As such, primary switch failure would cause the automated manual transmission’s clutch to remain engaged when the brakes are applied. This could increase stopping distances, possibly resulting in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will install a micro-switch at the brake pedal and update the software to run a diagnostic on the switch during engine start-up.

  • Recall 2009025 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain trucks equipped with super single tires, vibration frequency from the suspension may result in fatigue cracking of the mounting brackets for the brake cam tubes. In time the crack could propagate and cause of the brake cam tube support bracket(s) to fail, which could result in a loss of brakes at the corresponding wheel end. This could increase stopping distances, possibly causing a vehicle crash resulting in property damage, personal injuries or death. Correction: dealers will install an additional support bracket to the brake cam tubes.

  • Recall 2009144 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, the windshield wiper motor may be susceptible to water intrusion, which could result in an electrical short circuit and a fire. This could cause property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

  • Recall 2007084 [Canada]: Other
On certain trucks, the axle housing may have been manufactured with steel that was out of specification (9.5mm thick instead of 11mm thick), which could result in a fatigue failure over time. If failure occurs, the axle may lock-up or the end of the axle could come off, which may result in a vehicle crash with injury or death. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the axles.

  • Recall 2007253 [Canada]: Steering
On certain trucks, the locknut used to retain the steering shaft may not have had the lock feature. As a result, the nut could loosen, allowing the steering shaft to separate, causing a loss of steering control which could result in a vehicle crash with injury or death. Correction: dealers will replace the steering shaft pinch bolt and locknut.

  • Recall 2007257 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain trucks, when the ignition key is in the 'on' position, the pre-heater, located in the fuel filter base, is energized. If this pre-heater is energized while maintenance is being performed on the fuel filter, diesel fuel could ignite within the filter housing. A fire within the fuel filter housing may spread possibly resulting in property damage or personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the fuel heater assembly.

  • Recall 2007338 [Canada]: Other
On certain trucks, the fifth wheel hitch assembly's lever arm may have been incorrectly installed during the manufacturing process. The lever arm pivot bolt may have been over-tightened which could distort the pivot bolt spacer sleeve and prevent the fifth wheel latch jaw from closing and latching securely around the trailer king pin. This could allow the towed unit to separate from the towing vehicle while underway, potentially causing a crash with injury or death. Correction: dealers will replace the pivot bolt and sleeve with a hex head shoulder bolt and washer.

  • Recall 2007394 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain trucks, the automatic circuit breakers used to protect the vehicle lighting system may not provide adequate protection. If a short circuit occurs, components and wiring may be subject to overheating, which could result in a vehicle fire, causing property damage and/or personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will replace the circuit breakers with fuses.

  • Recall 2006243 [Canada]: Powertrain
On certain trucks, an improperly seated or missing u-joint snap ring can result in the bearing cup to separate from the slip yoke sub-assembly. The u-joint could then contact the slip yoke casting and eventually cause the ear to fracture. This could result in additional damage to the driveline, the vehicle and any nearby objects. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the driveshafts.

The office of defects investigation (odi) received early warning reporting (ewr) data from the manufacturer that indicated some number of subject vehicles equipped with the subject automated manual transmission had allegedly experienced a condition where the clutch failed to automatically disengage the transmission from the engine as intended. This may result in extended stopping distances and/or unintended forward motion of a vehicle previously at rest.To date, odi is aware of 134 subject vehicles with one or more complaints or field reports related to this condition. Also, odi is aware of 164 subject vehicles with one or more warranty claims related to this condition.By letter dated june 25, 2013, volvo trucks north america (volvo) notified odi that it has initiated a safety recall (nhtsa recall no. 13v268 and volvo recall no. Rvxx1303) to address a safety defect in approximately 23,003 model year (my) 2007 through 2014 volvo vah, vhd, vnl, vnm and vt model trucks. The affected vehicles were manufactured from december 20, 2006 through may 22, 2013 and were originally equipped with the subject automated manual transmissions.According to volvo, reports of the subject transmission clutch mechanism failing to automatically disengage as intended are associated with the removal of a brake pedal micro switch that provided a redundant signal to the transmission control module indicating the brakes had been applied.Previously, volvo had removed this brake pedal micro switch from new vehicle production and from certain vehicles already in-service via two field service campaigns (sp 432-024 and sp 432-026) because it decided the switch was unnecessary and/or a maintenance issue. In the absence of this redundant brake pedal micro switch, the clutch mechanism may fail to disengage the transmission from the engine at low vehicle speed should the stop lamp switch fail to send and/or the transmission control module fail to receive the primary signal. At the time of this closing, volvo is evaluating available remedies and will provide nhtsa with details when the recall remedy procedure has been finalized.Volvo will notify affected owners by mail by august 25, 2013.Please see nhtsa recall no. 13v268 for details.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.

  • Volvo sleeper glass de-bonding investigation as of 20110523

Odi opened recall query rq11-001 after a review of ewr field reports identified lower bunk window separations on the subject vehicles.Volvo had issued three recalls for sleeper window separations since 2003.Additionally, volvo had issued two bulletins for sleeper window issues during the same time period. The frequency of related actions led odi to open this formal investigation. An information request (ir) letter was sent to volvo on 23 june 2011.Volvo responded on 17 august 2011 and then provided updated warranty information on 9 january 2012.Volvo provided production change data and warranty information which was correlated to vehicle build month and failure date.Odi analyzed the data to determine if additional production time frames should have been included in previous recalls.Odi also requested information from its network of fleet owners. The response from this network reaffirmed the accuracy of the updated warranty information.Based on the information and data received, odi has concluded that all production periods have been appropriately addressed by volvos previous recalls and no additional recall action is required at this time.

I'd like to request from this department to open an investigation on a rusty frame problem on 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 commercial volvo vnl trucks. These trucks have high tendency to have frame rust and even perforation putting motorists at risk in the usa highways.

I have ~15 years experience driving most make/models of class 8 trucks in alaska and lower 48 states. I have never operated any truck with low beam headlights so bad that i had to risk blinding on-coming traffic with my high beams in order to operate at all after sunset - until this one. The projector style lens sheds little more light on the pavement ahead than i expect from a clearance lamp shop mechanics tell me that this is normal for all volvo trucks using the "vn" style aero-composite design. On the other hand, the high beam, fog and driving lamps are wonderful. This really is stunningly dangerous and needs an investigation. I'm mystified that nhtsa hasn't acted already. Could it be as simple as worn out bulbs? ...Incorrect bulbs? Invisibly degraded projector lenses? ...Degraded voltage to the bulbs? Whatever is wrong, nobody seems to know how to fix it. And every night i operate, i worry that i might be blamed for an incident because my low beams keep me blind or because i blinded on-coming traffic with my high beams. How 'bout it nhtsa? This is your opportunity to fix something before people get hurt. 2007 volvo 780, bought in 7-31-2006, when driving from texas to california we had problems with transmission going into gear. From that time on the problems have gotten worse and to the point of being unsafe. It breaks down frequently and won't go into gear. We have been towed numerous times and have lost revenue. It has melted wires and components. The computer throws out codes that indicates problems with the computer, electrical, transmission, vehicle, brakes, etc., etc. The truck has been down numerous times. Most recent, down in october of 07, down in dec. Of 07, down in april 07 two times. Is now broken down in slc, ut and is at the volvo dealership there. I bought a new truck so that it would be reliable like volvo claimed it to be. It now just shuts down and you are dead in your tracks. It has melted two voltage doublers. It is unsafe to be on the road. I want a new truck, one that runs. I paid for the new truck, i pay my monthly payments even when the truck is broken down. Volvo has a ten point service commitment that they don't keep. I need help! I'm going to loose my contract with fed ex and go out of business because this truck is a lemon! Please inform me if you know what i can do, who i can talk to, where i can go for assistance to get to the bottom of this on going problem that has not yet been resolved. Thank you! *tr

Hendrickson air ride front suspension foa class 8 trucks: suspension has been inspected by truck dealer and said to be operating normally. However at speeds over 50 mph chassis leaning and rocking makes directional control difficult. Steering input was vague and turn-in when navigating corners induces directional control problems as well as aggravating stability problems. *ak
