  • Recall 2021723 [Canada]: Accessories
Issue: this recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at toyota or lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: this recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 pk5a408j09 pU14000904 C014003151 pk5a408j13 pU14000905 C014000885 pk5a489j11 pU14000907 C014000888 pk5a489j22 pU14000909 C014000907 pk5a410h00 pU14000911 C014100904 pU14000900 pU14000913 C014100907 pU14000901 pU14003571 C014100911 pU14000902 pk5a408j05 pU14000903 safety risk: engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

  • Recall 2021718 [Canada]: Steering
Issue: on certain vehicles, a defect in the steering gear assembly could cause it to leak power steering fluid. If this happens, there could be a loss of power steering assist. Note: for 2007-2020 models, this recall only affects 41 vehicles that had a replacement steering gear installed in 2021. Safety risk: a loss of power steering assist may result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect, and if necessary, replace power steering gear assembly.

  • Recall 2018097 [Canada]: Seats and restraints
Certain vehicles may fail to conform to canada motor vehicle safety standard cmvss 207 - anchorage of seats, cmvss 210 - seat belt anchorages, cmvss 210.1 - user-ready tether anchorages for restraint systems and booster seats, and cmvss 210.2 - lower universal anchorage systems for restraint systems and booster seats. One or more of the bolts fixing the left hand rear split seat bracket sub-assemblies to the floor pan may not have been tightened properly during assembly. This could allow the seat to move in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will retighten the five seat leg bracket bolts.

  • Recall 2017363 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the electrical power cords of some dealer installed block heaters may have been improperly manufactured, causing the wires to contact each other, resulting in a short circuit. A short circuit could lead to a fire which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: for vehicles where the subject block heater was approved for installation, the dealer will replace the block heater assembly with a new one of an improved design. For vehicles where the subject block heater was not approved for installation, dealers will remove the block heater assembly. In the interim, until the remedy can be performed, dealers will cut the plug end from the block heater cord to disable the block heater's operation.

  • Recall 2017036 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles equipped with the plastic rear step bumper, the resin reinforcement brackets that secure the step corners of the bumper could become damaged after a rear impact. If a person were to use the rear bumper steps with damaged resin reinforcement brackets, part of the bumper could break off which could cause the person to fall, increasing the risk of injury. Correction: dealers will replace the resin reinforcement brackets with steel reinforcement brackets. In addition, the rear bumper tread covers will also be replaced.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation as of 20190419

The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit. The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems. The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low. While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events. Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring. The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations. In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.Additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.

My 2017 toyota tundra 1794 crewmax, during winter months in south carolina - the headlights, tail lights and internal instrumentation will turn off when turning left or right with turn signal engaged. This only happens with the lights in the auto position and not in the manual position and the issue occurs at night intermittently while the vehicle is in motion!! Sometimes the lights just flicker and sometimes they go off and stay off. I have almost ran off the road twice when this has happened. It happens more frequently with cooler temperatures. I have had this issue for over a year now trying to get toyota to fix it. This is a known issue that toyota doesnt want to fix unless they can duplicate this issue in the shop, in which they usually cant. There are many people online complaining of the same issue, on forums. This is a saftey issue that needs to be fixed asap.

When enabling the rear defroster (and side mirror defrost), i heard a loud pop, and noticed smoke under the passenger windshield wiper. The windshield had cracked (presumably from the heat differential), and the wiper started to melt on the windscreen. There appears to be an electrical short directly under the windshield (and under the passenger wiper) that is related to the defroster. This occurred when the vehicle was stationary, and cold (morning startup).

When operating the vehicle with the headlight stalk/selector on "auto", the dash lights and headlights suddenly go totally black or out. I'm able to turn the lights back on by moving the selector to "on". The problem is it happens and sometimes you don't know all of your lights are off when driving, especially in the city with other bright lights. This can be very dangerous. This has happened several times, so i no longer use the auto function on my stalk...Too dangerous. *tr

I have a 2017 tundra and when i use my turn signal it makes my headlights and my dash lights go off. I have researched this on the internet and found a stream that this is a problem with a lot of these tundra's are having this issue. Driving at night with headlights on in auto position all lights shut off as if the switch was turned to off. This happens usually when turning. A tap on the turn signal stalk / headlight switch brings them back. Impossible to recreate. This is very dangerous. This happens monthly.

Fuel tank is suppose to be 37 gallon. I have never put more than 28.5 gallons in the tank. Even when i run the tank to the red light or my mileage indicator show 20 or less miles remaining. I have ask the dealership twice about this and they claim is a safety feature so you don't run out of fuel. I run the tank down to 10 miles left in tank and that is when i put 28.5 gallons into it.

When the signal stalk is placed on auto and it is clearly dark outside the headlights will intermittently turn off when putting the left turn signal into place. The lights will come back on when the signal stalk is back in the neutral position. This has happened while in motion, stationary, and at different outside temperatures. However, i have noticed this occurs more when the temperature is in the 40's.

With the headlight switch selected to 'auto' and when engaging the turn signal to the left durning night driving, all exterior and interior lights would go black until turn signal switch is moved to the on the position. Vehicle was taken local toyota dealership service department to remedy the issue. Initially, this dealership thought it was the light sensor located on the dash of the truck and replaced it using a warranty claim. Almost immediately (next day), the vehicle repeated the same initial failure over 3 times in an hour. I made an appointment with that same toyota dealership but upon arrival i was met with resistance due to a previous warranty claim for the same issue. They advised me if i wanted the switch replaced, it would be totally at my expense. I left that dealership and proceeded to another toyota dealership who replaced the switch at my expense. The replacing of the switch has solved the lights going out while driving during the night. I've read on several truck forums that this is a known issue by toyota but they haven acknowledged it. Luckily, i can afford to replace my switch to ensure my family is safe in this vehicle but my submission here is for those that can't afford the replacements and need toyota to issue a recall to fix this serious but inexpensive issue.

Unburnt fuel is entering the exhaust system and combusting when it comes in contact with the catalytic convertors. This happens almost every time it is driven. This has been happening from the day we bought it. Took the truck to dick hannah toyota in longveiw wa. They had never heard of this. The talked to the factory but nobody has a solution. The dealer tried a similar truck and got the same results. They talked to the toyota field rep. And he stated he could make this happen to his tundra when ever he wanted? This has happened while incruise control also.

Ibc is a completely terrible part in the truck. 3 times pulling a trailer and then the brakes completely give out. Took it to the service center and of course nothing is wrong with it. Took the trailer to a rv place and nothing wrong with that. After all the threads and everyone complaining about the tow brakes not working toyota is refusing to own up to a problem. It is unsafe and someone will get hurt. How is this not being addressed and why is the problem not fixed? Why have a tow package and not be able to tow. Take ownership and fix the brakes!!

The vehicle's instrument cluster is very dark and hard to read during the day. Especially on cloudy days or when wearing sunglasses. As a result, reading the instrument cluster takes significant effort, which means more time of eyes not on the road and it makes controlling speed hard. Root cause of the problem is that the instrument cluster lighting does not come on unless the head and tail lights are on. With light switch set to "auto", head & taillights and thus instrument cluster lights will be off during the day. With the light switch set to on, instrument cluster lights will be on, but the maximum output is not bright enough to be easily visible in daytime driving. Like most vehicles in texas, my truck came with legal and modest side window tinting from the dealer. This reduces light falling onto the mostly black instrument cluster and reflecting of the thin white lettering. Hence, it takes effort to read. The problem is exacerbated when wearing sunglasses (a must during summer in texas) or when driving on cloudy days.

I bought this 2017 tundra dlb cab brand new and have had to shop several times about transmission down shifting and then up- shifting on slight inclines, not engaging when put in drive then slamming into gear . 1rst time they checked fluid and said all ok ,2nd time checked fluid again and was told transmission needs to be warmed up before driving , 3rd time they said they did a factory reset on transmission saying somehow out of sync / check fluid = this made it do it at different speed . Now if stopped on a slight incline while truck still in drive it rolls backwards while in gear until it catches and this causes engine stall !!! I called and asked toyota to start tech support , after receiving a call back i was told tech's wanted to know about incline and they wanted truck overnight . So , not only did i take pictures of the incline i also filmed truck rolling backwards in drive and stalling , i took back for 4th time showed and uploaded pictures and video to shop foreman's computer ( he and another mechanic looked shocked ) they kept overnight and next day . Then i was told they couldn't duplicate , they compared to same truck ( salesman told me they didnt have one ) and that truck did same thing ( trying to say it was ok because it did it too) and then being told at present time they cannot fix and or install new parts / transmission !!!!!! This problem is going to seriously hurt , injure or kill someone !! As i told them i have had three other toyota's , a chevy , ford and grand marquis and they don't do this . Toyota has a problem they seem to want to ignore !! Please help

The spare tire detached from its mount under the vehicle while we were driving at highway speed on i-76 in ne colorado. The tire fell to the pavement and was struck by the travel trailer we were towing, blowing out a trailer tire and damaging the trailer. The spare tire was struck a few minutes later by another vehicle, causing failure to 2 tires on their vehicle and near loss of vehicle control. The people in the second vehicle confirmed it was our spare tire. At the time of this incident, our toyota tundra was 10 months old, purchased in january 2017. The spare tire had never been used nor had it been lowered or removed from its factory-installed mounting device. It was fitted with a dealer-installed spare tire lock. The truck has not been in an accident or damaged in any way and has been maintained by the dealership where it was purchased. We have a dash-cam file of the incident but it only shows that nothing else was in the highway as the incident occurred. The rearview camera only shows the travel trailer rocking as it went over the spare tire.

While driving approximately 30 mph, a vehicle suddenly cut in front of the driver and caused a chain reaction of sudden stops with several vehicles. The driver rear ended the preceding vehicle. The air bags and toyota safety sense system failed to activate. The safety sense feature was supposed to stop the vehicle automatically due to objects (vehicle) being in close proximity at a fast rate. The front end of the vehicle had severe damage and was towed. The contact was unsure if a police report was filed. The driver received injuries to the neck and arm area, which required medical attention. The contact was not aware if the vehicle was totaled or able to be repaired. The contact was unaware if the dealer was informed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000.

The onboard intigrated trailer break controller does not work with all electric break trailers. Works on manual trailer break application but not effective enough with vehicle breaks. This is very dangerous. During a panic stop the trailer breaks do not come on like they do with an after market break controller like a tekonsha p3 progressive break controller. This dangerous situation needs to be addressed with a software recall to make the electric break mose more responsive. How many accidents does it take for the ntsb to take action. Go online and read all the negative forums.

On july 8, 2017 we had just purchased a new 2017 tundra. We tow a 24 ft. Rv trailer and we purchased this vehicle for that reason. One of the features this vehicle has is the integrated brake control system for towing. As we were headed home on state hwy. 42 near coos bay, oregon, i noticed blue smoke coming from the rear of the pickup. I wasn't sure what happened. I stopped as soon as i could and i couldn't locate the cause of the smoke. I later learned there has been many consumer complaints regarding the faultiness of this integrated brake system controller. I want this issue fixed so i can be assured of a safe trip when towing my rv trailer without the fear of having no trailer brakes when i need them or having them lock up for no reason. Thank you

While towing a camper, i had a trailer brake warning light. I checked the connector and drove on, light came on again. Had minimal brake control on my camper brakes. I went to a dealer in ct, they said they had had 1 issue with one vehicle.. I made an appointment with my purchasing dealer. The master tech could find no problem. Said it was most likely a problem with the ground on my camper. I had towed this camper for 2 years with a 2012 tundra with no issues. With the 2017, could not adjust the brakes or get them to lock up, even on setting # 10. Dealer didnt give me a copy of the work order, said there wasnt a problem. Getting ready to go on a trip and will be hooking up an after market controller as i dont trust this one. Have been a loyal toyota customer and i'm very disappointed.

Trailer brake controller not functioning when brake pedal applied, gain makes no difference in braking. Twice i have had to make an emergency stop and felt no braking from the trailer.

NoNoN NoneNone20170618

Factory onboard intigrated trailer break controller does not work as specified. When set to manual electric breaks none of the gaine settings work. The manual override works but not the trail breaks. If you switch to electric over hydraulic the breaks grab and are unsafe. Also the vehicle comes standard with a towing package but towing mirrors are optional. A very expensive option. When installed on the tundra platinum you loose all other safety functions of the standard platinum mirrors. You loose the outboard clearance lights, the blind spot monitor, the automatic diming function, the memory function and the puddle lamps. This needs to be addressed with toyota. All of these are safety items.

NoNoN NoneNone20170403

Integrated trailer brake controller doesn't apply adequate voltage to trailer brakes. At 100% gain brakes barely work with an empty trailer. Brakes should lock up at 100% gain. Towing any load is dangerous without trailer brakes. Dealership had no fix or remedies. I haven't had any situations because i know i shouldn't drive it without trailer brakes. I bought a truck to tow my camper, flat trailer and boat. A$47,000 truck should be able to tow.

Mice are able to enter the air ventilation system from a large gap at the ends of the air intake grill below the windshield, once in, they enter the cab and dash area. These mice will damage the wiring and cause a vehicle system failure (braking-power-air bag, etc.) i have reported this to my dealer rochester toyota and toyota customer service (800-331-4331). The dealer has acknowledged that this is a issue and only suggestion was to put a scent in the cab to discourage the mice. This is serious manufacturing flaw that needs a retro fitted air intake grill to close off it's current gap that allow mice to enter the ventilation system. I have installed steel mesh to cover these large gaps (photos attached). A recall to correct this problem should be issued.

Ordered and received 2017 toyota tundra pickup truck with work package. Per toyota, "work package" removes electronic options such as power seats, windows and locks. The problem here, is that there is no keyed cylinder lock installed on the passenger side door, therefore--removing the electronic door lock, also removes all means of entering the locked passenger side of this vehicle, except by unlocking the driver side door, and crawling over the seat to manually unlock the door from the inside. Toyota does not state lack of passenger door access in any of their published information concerning the "work truck package". I am very concerned about safety issues pertaining to this by eliminating all exterior access to the passenger side. In an emergency situation, for any reason the driver's side door is either inoperable or unaccessible, there would be no quick, easy way to enter the vehicle with a simple turn of a key -- only option would be to break through a window, if possible. I find it very disturbing that a major automobile manufacturer purposely eliminates vehicle access due to financial reasons, overshadowing safety reasons.

Interior dash and center console have highly reflective chrome bezels. The chrome reflects sun directly into driver (and passenger) eyes depending on the relationship of the sun and location of the vehicle while it is being driven. The reflections shine directly into the drivers eyes and occur at the same time across the length of the dashboard and center console. This reflection of sunshine into the interior is extremely distracting. Even if one holds up a hand in an attempt to block the bright reflection one can't block all the different reflections from the interior. I believe this is an severe safety issue that should require replacement of the mentioned interior chrome details with a dark non-reflective trim.

Trailer integrated brake controller (ibc) does not work correctly. Using setting for "electric brakes" on multi display indicator (mdi) will not stop trailer with dual axle disc brakes. Very poor performance with gain turned to max. Work around is to select "electric over hydraulic" on mdi and adjust gain output.
