Known Recall Investigations
  • Engine compartment fire investigation as of 20070612

By letter dated march 12, 2008, general motors corp. (gm) has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (identified by nhtsa recall number 08v-118) to address a defect in approximately 207,542 model year (my) 1997-2003 buick regal gs and pontiac grand prix gtp vehicles equipped with the l67 supercharged version of gms 3800 series ii v6 engine. The recalled regal gs vehicles were built from august 1996 to june 2003 and the grand prix gtp from march 1996 through january 2003.According to gm, oil may escape past the valve cover gasket on the front cylinder bank (cylinders 1-3-5) and deposit onto hot exhaust system components.Under certain conditions, it is possible for this oil to ignite a small pilot flame, which may spread to the adjacent plastic spark plug wire channel, the spark plug wires themselves, the plastic engine cover, and other under hood components.Reports indicate this most often occurs on higher-mileage vehicles shortly after the vehicle has been driven and then parked.Typically, the fire was discovered within 5 to 15 minutes after the vehicle was parked.During this time window, under hood temperatures may become elevated.Such elevated temperatures combined with a lack of airflow through the engine compartment may permit a small pilot flame to propagate and ignite other fuel sources. To correct the safety defect, gm will install an improved design front valve cover gasket and spark plug wire retainer. This remedy will be suppliedfree of charge for all recalled vehicles.Until sufficient parts become available to repair all of the affected vehicles, gm strongly recommends that owners observe the following important precautions: (1) they strongly recommend that owners do not park their vehicle in a garage, carport, or other structure; (2) if owners notice a burning odor, they should have their dealer inspect the vehicle - the dealer will inspect the vehicle without charge; and (3) use premium fuel (91 octane or higher) in the vehicle as recommended in the vehicles owner manual. The action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation. The subject fire incident rate on the c-, g-, and h-platform subject vehicles is low.The agency will continue to monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.See document file for additional information regarding this resume.

  • Engine compartment fires investigation as of 20021022

Ea02-030 is closed with gmea02-030 is closed with gm¿s actions in 03v-473 and 04v-090 recalling approximately 529,000 my 1998-99 c- and h-body vehicles equipped with defective fuel pressure regulators. These vehicles were equipped with plastic intake manifolds that are unable to contain pressures that occur in some backfire events and defective fuel pressure regulators with leaking diaphragms that can provide a source of fuel to produce a combustible air-fuel mixture in the manifold. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by odi that no safety defect exists in the vehicles that are not included in gm¿s recalls.Odi will continue to monitor the incidence of manifold ruptures and related fires in other my 1995-2002 gm passenger cars equipped with the subject intake manifold. For additional information, see the attached closing report.

Purchased this car spring 2017 paid in full to prior owner. Asked prior owner when test drove car how come all the service lights up and including air bag warning light on dash collum are lit up? Owners response "not sure but has been like that for as long as can remember we don't think you should worry?" a week later notice the car wants to accelerate on its own? Just bolts on my mom and i ? Within that month both passenger right side doors front & back power windows will no longer work at all? Steering wheel starts making a horrible sound and smell check steering fluid empty replaced fluid only to find out it just poor's out steering will lock up and can't drive most days? Notice same issue with radiator? My far worse experience with this car was not knowing how heavy the trunk was as well as not knowing it will fall back shut on own? This happened to me unloading groceries one day crashing down on my head shoulders and mid back pinning me inside trunk dazed and hurt until my son saw me trapped and pulled trunk off my body? Should of went to the e.R. Was in astronomical amount of pain but didn't have medical insurance so treated myself at home? Took 2 month's before bruising and swelling finally went down ? Cut on my head took longer to heal? This has accured more than once and i'm absolutely terrified to go near the trunk at all now without my son to help me? Interior light will stay on up to an hour after starting and driving the car making night driving dangerously difficult and fearful! Passenger front seat has never worked can't adjust seating at all due to it being power seats? I'm terrified every time i get into my car worried it's going to malfunction resulting in hurting my family and i or anyone that could be involved in an accident caused by this monster of a car? Please help me? This car is scary

Late december i receive recall 15757 which stated the issue with the possible engine compartment fire. It also stated that 'parts to repair your vehicle are not currently available. My car went on fire on january 19, 2016 and was destroyed. It was parked for about twenty minutes after i drove it for about 30 minutes. The car that i have had for 200,000 miles because we loved the car and took extremely good care of, which would have lasted at least another two to three years, is now gone. I reported it promptly on january 21, 2016 to an extremely gracious woman named elizabeth, and was given the service request number. An inspection of my vehicle would occur i was told. I was just now told on the phone that because i made a claim to my insurance company, that gm / buick considers the matter closed. In what world does that make sense??? I am now faced with the need to purchase another vehicle which i can ill afford. Even with the insurance settlement, i will incur debt that that was not in my plans and will be extremely difficult to arrange. Besides the money, is there no consideration to the turmoil this has caused. Have you ever watched your car go up in flames? Have you ever had to tell your spouse that the vehicle she has meticulously cared for so long just burned to a crisp? The fire occurred in my workplace parking lot and was put out by our local volunteer fire dept. I have gone to great lengths to make sure that my insurance company was aware that the car needed to be inspected by gm to insure that that the fire was related to the recall issue. I understand that perfectly. I also communicated to gm where the vehicle was being towed to and provided names and phone numbers. In following up i was now told that nothing was done and nothing is to be done!

After driving about ten minutes into my trip last night at about 60 mph, my buick regal 2000 ended up losing the ability to accelerate. It then lost all power and left me stranded on the interstate. I lost the power steering, the instrument panel started flickering. This occurred in a work zone at about midnight. Within five minutes the flashers and lights also went totally dead. Even the trunk would not respond to my remote. The car lights and engine had been very strong and never gave any reason for concern. The key has been difficult to remove from the ignition cylinder for several years. This has been the only source of trouble with the car. The red security light on the instrument panel was illuminated - which is unusual - until the lights quit working. Could this have been a problem with the security system? We have not altered the factory security system. It is original. Very dangerous situation.

Vehicle interior lighting does not work in park, drive or when lights turned on, cluster, gear indicator, climate display, radio lighting does not work at all, when driving at night & windows fog up i have a hard time finding the temp. Buttons while seeing safely out windshield. My son pulled out cluster, noticed missing resistors are the cause. Driver side leather heated seat gets too hot when switched on, fear it could lead to fire. Rear strut snapped from rust/age. Son replaced both rear struts, noticed the strut to frame was rusting out where the welds have been made & was not supporting the vehicles weight properly. If these give out, the rear of the car will drop & loose control of vehicle, possibly puncturing the fuel tank causing leak/fire while steering while is parked or in motion, moving steering wheel 9 to 3 o'clock position is a very loud thud. Headlight combo switch has failed resulting of losing headlights, interior lights. Leaks oil, puddles of oil near plenum & top of motor. Its always leaked since owning it. Fuel leak inside of engine bay. My son has recently discovered a fuel leak once the motor is shut off. It appears it is the back fuel rail return line quick disconnect fitting that is leaking gas once the motor is shut off, realized the problem when i shut my car off, 5 mins later i started it & could smell gasoline from the heat vents. Shut it off. Opened hood, strong order of gas present. Removed plastic top engine cover & a very strong smell present. Traced the fuel lines & found gasoline dripping out of the rear fuel rail onto the motor. Son is replacing the o rings in the quick connect to correct the problem. After googling this is a common problem on w-bodys & has caused the vehicles to start a fire but has not been recalled. Can provide pictures taken of the leak if contacted

2000 buick regal w/automatic...After about 3 yrs intermittent problem "key capture"...Park, turn off ignition and sometimes cannot remove key and cannot move wheel to locate anti-theft steering wheel lock detent...Repeated restart / moving of auto / ignition off ...Finally releases key !!...Loss of electrical power causes steering wheel lock !!!...If battery is discharged, attempt at start causes key to be "captured,"...Cannot be removed without "boost."...The latter indicates essentially faulty design...Apparently nobody checked what would happen with dead battery, loss of auto electrical power, or loss of electrical power at steering wheel anti-theft locking system..."theft setup"...Can set door locks and exit vehicle, but "captured key" can be used to start engine and vehicle can be driven away !!!..Apparently this is no longer a simple mechanical detent, but a solenoid system...So-called "fail safe" is in "wrong direction" !!!...Ought to fail into non-locking...This system is irritating at minimum, but can easily be a terrible safety hazard when vehicle is in motion...Dealer maintained "never heard of problem."..Past june arrived in fargo, nd for overnight...Took dozen restarts / moves / stops before key "released" !!!...Local dealer familiar with problem...Connector corrosion at shift console...Unitized assembly, entire console sub-assembly replacement at $780 !!!...Tech "loaded" connector with silicone "ignition grease" to forestall recurrence...Don't know extent (years and vehicles) gm is using this system...(aside opinion)...Dealer denial of problem and no issuance of defect warning opens up a potentially hellish legal liability campaign... *tr

Consumer is requesting reimbursement for the repair work performed on her 2000 buick regal - safety recall 09047. *nj the consumer received a safety recall letter in the mail. She took the vehicle to the dealer for the recall on may 18, 2009. On may 27, 2009 the vehicle stalled and almost caused an accident. The vehicle started up again after a 5 minute rest. The next day, the vehicle stalled 4 separate times while driving, the last stall took a wait of 20 minutes. The consumer took the vehicle back since the vehicle started stalling after the safety recall was performed. The consumer was told a new ignition switch was needed, but declined the repairs. The consumer went to her personal mechanic to have the vehicle inspected. The mechanic stated the engine wiring and ignition were all ok. The mechanic did find 2 plug wire separators on the front of the engine and spark plug wires were routed wrong, he also found the battery was installed on electrical wires leading to the fuse panel. The mechanic explained to the consumer that the spark plug caps were replaced and re-routed incorrectly, and the spark plug separator wires were all mixed up, which caused the spark plugs to misfire resulting in the vehicle stalling. The consumer is requesting reimbursement on the grounds that the mechanic should have been more careful and did the replacement correctly when performing the recall. *jb

2000 buick regal stalls while driving my 2000 buick regal has died multiple times in the last week as i was driving. The engine quits in as little as five minutes, but might take longer, and always happens as i am decelerating (foot off the accelerator, applying brake). Cranking causes the engine to fire, but not enough to keep running. It might take up to twenty tries to get it running again. En route to my mechanic, driving slowly and gently, the car would not stall. The mechanic road tested the car, and made it stall. Initially, error codes P0300, P0463, P1096, P0103 and P0128 were read. The older battery was replaced and the positive cable serviced. The ecm was reprogrammed (cost: $100!), and the regal ran well for a day. Shortly thereafter, it began dying as before, and was returned to the shop. Since then, it has been in his shop for four days, engine idling with test equipment attached. When it dies, it starts up immediately, and no error codes are present. He is at a loss. *tr

This is in regards to: nhtsa action number: ea07008 the recall replaces one of the valve cover gaskets. Obviously, when the car is brought in every gm dealer is going to tell you the other gasket is leaking also and should be replaced. I talked with the service manager at my gm dealer and he sees no reason why one side is different than the other. The recall references valve cover gaskets and hot exhaust system components which are on both sides of the engine. After being told that this may cause a fire most people are going to feel compelled to replace both side and wind up spending approximately $250. If there is no risk on the gasket covering cylinders 2-4-6, the recall as well as gm should state that, otherwise they should replace both. *tr

I have owned a 2000 buick regal since 2001. A few months ago, the driver's side electric window starting operating erratically - sometimes it would not work at all; other times it would. My mechanic looked at it but it worked fine for him. Last week, it suddenly stopped working and made a grinding noise, causing difficulty in every day usage, such as pulling up to mailbox to get mail. My mechanic stated the part alone will cost over $300 dollars. I have researched the problem on the internet and found this is a routine problem in buicks due to poor design - a plastic piece (involving regulator?) that fails too easily. Please ask buick / gm to issue a recall due to the enormous frequency of this problem. Thank you. *jb

Electric window motors fail leaving open windows in vehicle due to faulty general motors design. Upon examination i found that the steel cables that hold the electric windows in my 2000 buick regal are under great tension and they self destruct due to the plastic guides falling apart. If the cable is not in tension the motor will not work and the window falls open into the car door. New motor regulator assembly costs $400 for each window and the dealers want $400 labor to replace each window. I tied the cables with rope to get the windows to shut with the motor and then forced the window to stay shut with a wood brace in the door. After paying for a new vehicle and a vehicle extended warranty from gm i should not have to keep paying $800 per electric window for the rest of my vehicles life. The windows not shutting is a vehicle safely problem. Gm representatives claim that because their electric windows fail open that it is not a vehicle safety problem. I know of many other buick and pontiac owners that are also having the exact same problems with these windows as the vehicles age out of warranty. *nm

I purchased a 2000 buick regal gse 8/18/00 which has a supercharged engine. The car has been a great car until 12/16/2005. After i had parked the car and gone into the doctor's office, my car caught fire and was destroyed. The car was totaled and the insurance adjuster told me it was the 3rd burned buick regal supercharged engine that he'd seen this year alone. After investigation, it appears the gasket in the fuel injection system leaked, fuel dropped onto the manifold system, a fire started and the car was destroyed (along with a good bit of damage to the volvo parked next to mine). It would appear that the supercharged engine gaskets are a problem and fortunately for me, the car was the only loss....It could have been so much more. I do not know if others have lost anything beyond their cars but i believe it should be investigated. *nm

My complaint is my windows. My car will be paid off this nov. And i should have already filed this complaint. The first of this year my right back window got stuck in the downward position. I called superior chev to get a quote, it was 249.00 just for the window regulator over 600.00 parts and labor. I had to have the part so i bought it and came in contact with someone that could put it on for me for about 90% less than superior chev in dekalb county georgia. I always had trouble with the rear left window. I have my granddaughter car seat on that side. When i would pick up my son from school we could not roll the windows down because they would not come down. Then i had the driver's side down and it got stuck in the downward position. I had to take it in to have someone to tie it up will plastic ties because it was starting to rain. I have taken very good care of my car and it was not about to get ruin over some rain because of a manufacturing defect. I didn't and don't have the money to have all these windows fixed. I still can't get the windows down on the driver's side or the rear passenger side. I called monday superior chev oct 14,2005 instead of the part being 249.00. It is now 329. How in the world can someone come out of their pocket with this much money when it is the manufacturers fault. For me it is embarrassing to go through a drive-thru and open a door to pay and open again to pick-up the food. I don't go to drive-through no more. It's still hot when i wait on my son to get off from work and i can't lower the driver's window or the right left rear where my granddaughter sits. Could you please see if there is something that could be done and not just for me, but for other car buyers too. I have always bought what i consider american made cars and we need to do better in order to keep our jobs. I also had a tie rod i had to have replaced i believe it was in 2002 or 2003. I have a 2000 buick regal. In june 2005 three warning lights started showing up on my dash "check engine", "anti lock brakes" and "traction control system off". The light stayed on for 1 week and then went off. Thirty days later, the light came back on and stayed on for 1 week and then went off. I took the car to the williams family auto mall dealership (where i originally purchased the car and have had my car serviced) to diagnose the problem. They told me the anti lock brake system needs to be replaced and it will cost me $3,200 to fix. The car has 80,000 miles on it. I declined having this fixed because i do not have that kind of money to repair the car. In the middle of august, the three warning lights came on again and have stayed on since them. Now that i see the recall notice for gm's trucks and suv's with anti lock brake system problems i wanted to see if my problems are related to the recall. I also wanted to see if there is anyway i can have my car repaired along with this recall notice. Its not right for such a system to go out with 80,000 miles. In august 2005, i also has the power steering go out on all left turns. This was a major safety issue and i had to pay $1,000 to have this fixed. This also happened at 80,000 miles and again, in my opinion, should not have gone out. I had no choice but to repair this problem because i could not make any left turns with the vehicle. I took the car to the dealership for an estimate which was $2,300 who said the "rack" was out. I then took it to a local garage, dempseys, and they said the "pinion" part of the steering was out. I had the car fixed at dempseys for $1,000 with refurbished parts and the problem is fixed. *jb

*** this is a copy of what i submitted to buick. They have yet to respond. ***i have a 2000 buick regal. The car has been trouble-free since i have owned it (since july 2001). I was a mechanic for 10 years prior to getting out of the business. *ak in all my years of fixing cars, i never had to replace steel lines on the rack and pinion unit. On my regal, i had to replace the longer of the two (not the power steering hoses, but the steel lines on the rack itself). Even the folks at the dealer couldn't believe that i had to replace this particular line. Since my car is out of warranty, has their been any recall on this line? Can i get re-imbursed for my troubles? Sincerely, richard zielenski [email protected] [email protected] 216-641-5090

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 buick regal. While the contact was driving approximately 55 mph, the engine suddenly stalled with the loss of power steering. There was no prior warning. The engine restarted and the power steering began to function normally. The failures continuously occurred. The catalytic converter was replaced twice by the dealer. Also, the fuel pump had been replaced by an independent mechanic. The failures persisted after the repairs were performed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the recent failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. The vin was unavailable.

The srs (air bag) indicator is on solid & will not reset. I researched the nhtsa office of defects investigation recall database and and found there was a recall on the 2000 buick regal for the interior systems: passive restraint: air gag: side door: driver. The nhtsa campaign id # is 00v371000. I was never contacted via mail on this recall. I was mailed information on nhtsa campaign id # 01v109000. What do i need to do besides get my vehicle to a dealer to have this srs unit checked? Dt

My major concern is when i went to replace my tires today goodyear ls eagles i was told the tie rods were worn so badly that they could not do it without replacing them to align the car properly. There had been a noise in the front of the car since the day one that i thought was normal tire noise, based on my years of driving (37 without incident) it seems worn tie rods at 31,000 miles is something to consider investigating. My driving is local 90% of the time, 7 miles each way to work, 5 days a week. Once a month a trip to boston. I took the opportunity to report the other little incidental problems that do not have an immediate effect on my safety, the exception being the air bag light coming on and off intermittently. I have not reported these minor probelms to the dealer. I have reviewed the recall notices for my buick regal and based on my vin number i am hoping nhtsa can let me know if all the recall work has been performed. I purchased the car new in july 2000 and i am only aware of two recalls that required us to replace the labels on our visors and return to the dealer for seat belt assembly. I have never been contacted for the other reported recalls although they occurred in may 00 and june 00 and i did not purchase the car until 7/29/00. Is it safe to assume the recalls in may and june were performed on my car if it was one of the vehicles in need? Dt
