    On october 4th, 2018, ford motor company (ford) issued a safety recall (nhtsa recall 18v-735) on 1,282,596 model year (my) 2012-2018 ford focus vehicles with 2.0l gasoline direct injection (gdi) engines built prior to april 13th, 2017 and with 2.0l gasoline turbocharged direct injection (gtdi) engines built prior to february 2nd, 2018. This recall addressed engines that were experiencing a malfunctioning canister purge valve (cpv) and powertrain control module (pcm) software that was not adequately detecting a stuck open cpv. A malfunctioning cpv can disrupt the engines fuel to air ratio leading to loss of motive power. It can also cause a malfunction indicator light (mil), erratic fuel gauge readings, and excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system potentially deforming the fuel tank. The office of defects investigation (odi) has opened this recall query (rq) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging cpv failure in my 2012-2018 ford focus vehicles (subject vehicles) that were either included in recall 18v-735 and remedied prior to the reported incidents or were not included in recall 18v-735 but experienced the same failure as the affected vehicles. The remedy in this recall was an inspection of the cpv and fuel tank with replacement if found defective at the time of the inspection. The remedy also included a software update to the pcm meant to enable a check of the cpvs position prior to initiating an evaporative leak monitor check to reduce the occurrences of deformed fuel tanks. Following recall 18v-735, ford issued another safety recall (nhtsa recall 19v-515) that included updates to the pcm software. The affected population were vehicles included in recall 18v-735 that had already had the recall remedy implemented. Affected vehicles did not have the pcm updated with new software meant to detect a malfunctioning cpv. This investigation has been opened to assess the scope and remedy of recall 18v-735.     Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

    In january, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened this preliminary evaluation based on consumers allegations of doors failing to latch and/or inadvertently opening on model year (my) 2012-2013 ford focus vehicles (subject vehicles).Odi has received 464 unique reports related to the alleged problem, with over 200 claiming that the door(s) opened inadvertently while the vehicle was in motion.One consumer alleged an injury that occurred while driving when a door inadvertently opened and then closed on a childs arm.Another alleged that a door that inadvertently opened struck a parked vehicle.In response to odis information request, ford motor company (ford) provided 500 unique reports related to the alleged problem on the subject vehicles.Ford reported no injury or accident claims.Ford also submitted 1,513 warranty claims related to door latch failures.Many customers indicated that the affected door could not be latched at all and some of them decided to restrain the door by other means in order to operate the vehicle.Some customers also reported door latch failures occurring on multiple doors and at different times.Additionally, ford stated that my 2014-2015 ford focus, 2013-2015 ford escape, 2013-2015 ford c-max, 2014-2016 ford transit connect, 2015 ford mustang, and 2015 lincoln mkc, all use the same door latch as the 2012-2013 ford focus.On september 6, 2016, ford notified odi that it would conduct a safety recall (16v-643) to remedy the door latches in the my 2012-2015 ford focus and other ford models mentioned above (total of approximately 2 million vehicles).According to ford, a component within the door latch may break preventing the door from latching.Ford dealers will replace all four door latches in the recalled vehicles with a new more robust latch design that is currently in production.The recall action initiated by the manufacturer appears to address the safety risks.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The odi reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the identification (odi) numbers found in the attached list.

  • Electric powertrain propulsion failure investigation # PE13031

    In an october 28, 2013 letter to nhtsa, ford motor company (ford) submitted a recall notice identifying a defect in the powertrain control module (pcm) software in approximately 2,456 model year (my) 2012 through 2014 ford focus electric vehicles manufactured from september 15, 2011 through august 23, 2013 (recall no. 13v-523).According to ford, pcm software faults may cause a complete loss of powertrain torque.When this condition occurs, drivers receive a red triangle indicator and the message stop safely now in the instrument cluster.In addition, vehicle brake and steering systems will continue to operate normally and the vehicle can be restarted after going through a shutdown process.Ford and its supplier, magna powertrain, upgraded the pcm software to address powertrain shutdown conditions and issued a technical service bulletin on september 23, 2013 instructing dealers to reprogram the pcm on all affected vehicles. The office of defects investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by ford as well as complaints submitted to odi from consumers. In total, there were 171 unique reports indicating loss of motive power while driving, and the predominant failure mode identified involved loss of powertrain torque.Ford began owner notification on november 5, 2012.Owners of the recalled vehicles are notified to take their vehicle to a ford or lincoln dealer who will reprogram the pcm to the latest calibration. The contact owns a 2014 ford focus. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled when she disengaged the brake pedal and depressed the accelerator pedal. There were no warning lights illuminated however, the hill start assist not available message was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact stated she was able to restart the vehicle and pull to the side of the road. The contact stated as she was attempting to park the vehicle at a nearby parking lot, she disengaged the brake pedal and depressed the accelerator pedal, and the vehicle stalled again. The transmission fault, service immediately message appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.

Transmission keeps failing on the car and it is currently in a ford dealership as they are refusing to acknowledge that there's a recall on it and that it should be covered. This is the 2nd or third time time that i had issues with the transmission itself not including other constant issues with the car itself.

Vehicle was left with midwest superstore in hutchinson, kansas july 2020 for multiple fuel related and transmission related problems. Dealer replaced purge valve (recall), did not inspect fuel tank. Also a transmission test was done and all above failure levels. Picked up the car with a dead battery, broken fuel gauge, and still stalled regularly with less than half tank fuel. Did not have spare vehicle, dealt with for entire year. Transmission frequently shutters or locks up. Vehicle frequently stalls in traffic or after fuel addition. Finally was able to get it back to dealer (a year later). They note that indeed the fuel tank is crushed (purge valve recall) and will require a tank and pump assembly. Dealership states that ford will not honor replacement of these components even though the recall was never adequately performed the previous year. The only thing that can make the fuel tank crush is the defective purge valve they replaced.

I have a 2014 ford focus and i have had three services visits i have had the clutch replaced two shift actuators, the transmission oil seal and the transmission control module after the third service visit the car would shutter nearly every time i drove it but the symptoms were no more than just performance issues which went on for about two years. In addition the car would periodically overheat during extreme temperatures over rover 110 briefly when i would start the car but the temperature gauge would go right back down  and the car wouldn't overheat. However this was most likely due to the transmission overheating because in june the car would exhibit the same symptom but more frequently but then when i was driving on june 13th the computer told me the transmission was overheating. I barely managed to get the car home however the transmission began to lose power and the transmission service light came on. I later inspected the car and noticed the breather tube had come lose on top of the transmission most likely due to shuttering. I can no longer drive the car because of the potential that i could get in an accident even though you have braking and power steering there's a potential for a hazard when making left turns if you are unable to accelerate while making a left turn due to loss of power with the transmission you could be hit by oncoming traffic. Ford refuses to replace or repair the transmission and as with numerous other consumers they use the excuse of the car being out of warranty  i have also had a battery draw due to the transmission i have had to replace the the battery 3 times and the hill assist light came on numerous times

The dealer declined to repair the vehicle stating it did not meet the proper specifications. The vehicle has failed and no longer covered under the warranty. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that there was corrosion on the wiring harness which caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was not repaired.
