The aluminum bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (vanos) unit can loosen over time and possibly break.

Valeo is recalling certain engine cooling fans, part numbers 696121, 696273, and 696275, used as service replacement parts for model year 2008-2011 bmw 1-series, 2006-2011 bmw 3-series, 2000-2009 bmw 5-series, 2004-2005 bmw 6-series, and 2006-2007 bmw 7-series vehicles. A metal-oxide semiconductor may overheat due to insufficient screwing of the semiconductor on the aluminum heat sink. This primary failure could cause adjacent components on the fan assembly motor circuit board to overheat and short.

  The screws retaining the variable camshaft timing (vanos) housing may loosen and under certain circumstances the heads may break off. This can lead to the vanos leaking oil internally and adversely affect the valve timing adjustment. If found to deviating from targeted data the engine emergency mode will be activated. This will be indicated by a distinct change in engine running. The orange engine management warning lamp and a check message; on vehicles with n51/n52 engines this will appear at ignition recycle on n55 engine it will display immediately.

The driver should be made aware of the issue by flickering of the instrument cluster (dash) or an engine mis-fire; but if the driver does not then the engine could cut-out without warning.

  Issue: on certain vehicles equipped with an n52 or n52k 6-cylinder engine, a manufacturing problem could cause the pcv valve heater (blow-by heater) to short circuit and overheat. Note: this replaces transport canada recalls 2017-470 and 2019-170. Only vehicles equipped with an n52 or n52k engine require this repair. Safety risk: an overheated engine pcv valve heater could create the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective actions: bmw will notify owners by mail. • Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation # EA21002

  From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). On june 18th,i purchased the vehicle. On june 19th i was in route transporting my daughter to college when the vehicle began to severely smoke underneath the hood. A state trooper informed me that the vehicle could catch on fire if it was continuously driven. I had the car towed home (chicago, il). Contact was made with the dealership. The owner [xxx] had another tow truck pick the vehicle up. He assured me that the problem would be fixed. They called me 4 days later and stated that the car was ready. Within a week the car was smoking again. The dealership was notified. I was told to bring the car back in. I did so they kept the car for 2 weeks. The owner [xxx] then called me july 24,2019 stating that the mechanic says the vehicle is repaired and why is it that i'm bringing it back. I tried explaining to him that the car is not fixed and that there is proof (a video and pictures). He became upset when i told him that and blatantly told me that he wasn't fixing anything and next time not to buy a used car. With hanging up in my face. I just had the bolts on both the (intake and exhaust replaced) this is listed in the unspecified recall and no one notified me on this recall i drive the 2011 128i series coupe and this cost me out of pocket $1,800 dollars to replace, what i do not understand is why i was not notified of this i could have been in a serious accident and also i have 2 other recall issues that are happening to my car the air bag the signal keeps coming on and off and also the pcv valve off and on i smell something burning i do hope someone can contact me so i can get these recalls fix now i am really scared this is a matter of life and death. I have my receipt of me getting the bolts issue fixed and requesting a refund

The car was moving at highway speed with ac running. Smoke plumed from vents and under front passenger footwell. Electrical fire stemming from blower motor final stage unit and wiring harness.

The vehicle was in motion and the blower motor resistor harness began to smoke heavily. The a/c stopped working. I pulled over and disconnected the wiring harness and pulled the fuse. The wires melted, the connector melted, and the resistor is broken. After some research i see that bmw has recalled other cars for this exact same issue, but not the 1 series.

The high pressure fuel pump has failed and been replaced multiple times. It begins with the car taking much longer to crank and start. Then it completely fails potentially while driving, creating a safety issue, or will no longer start. The hpfp is easily replaced with just 3 bolts holding it to the side of the motor. Any competent shop can replace it in a couple hours at the most. The problem is exacerbated and made extremely frustrating by the service centers refusing to address the obvious problem. Instead they feign ignorance while hundreds of thousands of these are replaced after having replaced numerous other things. These other distractions are all more time consuming to replace and the root defective high pressure fuel pump is the last thing to be addressed when it should be the first and quickest. Every time once this has been replaced, it has been fixed right away. It is often that it will last for a few months or few thousand miles before failing again. Bmw needs to properly design and replace these dangerous failing units on n55 and other 3.0l turbo direct injection motors.

Takata recall braman bmw keep saying they do not have the parts. I have been waiting for 2 years, and every time i called they give me the same "scripted answer". I have been waiting for 2 years to get this part replaced and they just keep getting my name on a waiting list, that is not real. I got a letter from bmw saying the part is available and they keep saying to me that is not available.
