• Recall 136895 [USA]: The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Ford motor company (ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 ford focus vehicles with a 2.0l gdi or 2.0l gtdi engine. The canister purge valve (cpv) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.
  ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the cpv as needed. If the cpv is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began august 19, 2019. • Recall 2018577 [Canada]: Fuel supply
  On certain vehicles, the canister purge valve (cpv) may stick open and cause excessive vacuum in the fuel system that could deform the fuel tank. If this were to occur, it could cause: a malfunction indicator light (mil) to illuminate, erratic readings on the fuel gauge, and/or the engine may stall. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module (pcm) with new software and replace the cpv as necessary. If the cpv is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary.   Certain vehicles equipped with manual transmissions fail to conform to canada motor vehicle safety standard (cmvss) 206 – door lock and door retention components. The rear hatchback can be unlocked and unlatched with a single press of the interior latch release control button while the vehicle is in motion (less than 7 km/h), which is contrary to the requirements of the standard. As a result, unrestrained occupants may be at greater risk of injury. Correction: dealers will reprogram the body control module with updated software.

  On certain focus electric vehicles, there may be increased friction and excessive wear of the differential pinion gear shaft due to an error in manufacturing. This could result in localized overheating and eventual fracture of the pinion shaft or pinion gears, which would result in a loss of motive power while driving and loss of the transmission park function without warning, which could allow the vehicle to roll away while in park, increasing the risk of injury and/or property damage. • Oil pump failure investigation # PE23015

  On september 20, 2023, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe23-015 to investigate instances of engine failure due to loss of oil pressure in model year (my) 2018-2021 ford ecosport vehicles. Some consumers reported a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. The investigation revealed that the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm may fracture, separate from the tensioner backing plate, and/or the oil pump drive belt may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. A loss of engine oil pressure can result in engine seizure, which can result in a loss of motive power and a loss of mechanical vacuum pump required to provide power braking assist, increase the risk of a crash. On december 22, 2023, ford filed recall 23v-905 for certain my 2016-2018 ford focus and 2018-2022 ford ecosport vehicles. The recall remedy provides the replacement of the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt with redesigned parts to improve robustness. In view of the recall action being taken by ford, odi is closing this preliminary evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. • Loss of motive power investigation # RQ23006

  On october 4th, 2018, ford motor company (ford) issued a safety recall (nhtsa recall 18v-735) on 1,282,596 model year (my) 2012-2018 ford focus vehicles with 2.0l gasoline direct injection (gdi) engines built prior to april 13th, 2017 and with 2.0l gasoline turbocharged direct injection (gtdi) engines built prior to february 2nd, 2018. This recall addressed engines that were experiencing a malfunctioning canister purge valve (cpv) and powertrain control module (pcm) software that was not adequately detecting a stuck open cpv. A malfunctioning cpv can disrupt the engines fuel to air ratio leading to loss of motive power. It can also cause a malfunction indicator light (mil), erratic fuel gauge readings, and excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system potentially deforming the fuel tank. The office of defects investigation (odi) has opened this recall query (rq) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging cpv failure in my 2012-2018 ford focus vehicles (subject vehicles) that were either included in recall 18v-735 and remedied prior to the reported incidents or were not included in recall 18v-735 but experienced the same failure as the affected vehicles. The remedy in this recall was an inspection of the cpv and fuel tank with replacement if found defective at the time of the inspection. The remedy also included a software update to the pcm meant to enable a check of the cpvs position prior to initiating an evaporative leak monitor check to reduce the occurrences of deformed fuel tanks. Following recall 18v-735, ford issued another safety recall (nhtsa recall 19v-515) that included updates to the pcm software. The affected population were vehicles included in recall 18v-735 that had already had the recall remedy implemented. Affected vehicles did not have the pcm updated with new software meant to detect a malfunctioning cpv. This investigation has been opened to assess the scope and remedy of recall 18v-735. • Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

The contact owns a 2016 ford focus. The contact stated while reversing into the driveway, the power steering assist warning light illuminated, and the steering became difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 26,500.

On at least 5 previous instances (3 instances in which the vehicle was taken to and checked by my local ford dealership), the vehicles automatic transmission would cease to shift into or out of a gear(s) suddenly during normal driving operations. This would lead to rapid declaration, often times in moderate or greater traffic causing hazardous conditions to both myself and passengers and/or other vehicles and their passengers. The hazard was of possible collision as the vehicle did not perform at the speed of traffic. Additional hazard and safety issue, was during these events, the vehicle would enter a "neutral" gear position and although the accelerator was depressed, their was no torque to the drive train, this would also either decelerate the vehicle rapidly or in the event of cornering, increase the speed instantly during the cornering turn (because of the lack of downshift torque to the drive train)...On one instance i was unable to control the turn speed quickly enough and the vehicle entered the shoulder of the turn before i was able to regain positive control of the vehicle. Although ford has a customer satisfaction program (csp) extending the warranties for the transmission clutch and tcm, it appears that ford service dealers are extremely hesitant to perform the warranty service. To that end, i have taken my vehicle to local ford dealer with the transmission shudder conditions complaint, and each time they claim their diagnostics were not able to replicate my issue. All these service appts were while vehicle was under the warranty in miles and months. Then, this last week the vehicle had the same instances happen while on the freeway (all previous episodes had been on surface city streets), and it was a very dangerous situation with at least 2 vehicles taking evasive action to avoid rear-ending my vehicle as it decelerated rapidly. I pulled over and vehicle was towed to ford service, where they say the clutch is worn, as is the tcm.

A dealer repaired my transmission under warranty. Several months ago, first was slipping again. I called to schedule an appointment in march of 2021. Due to covid, they stated and shows clearly on their website to date, they could not get my vehicle in until july. At the july appintment, the clutch assembly needs to be replaced. The warranty expired one month previous, and it is now 1,500 miles over warranty. I believe they should repair the vehicle. It is not the first time for this issue on these vehicles

Engine recently came on, and the codes are saying factory recall

Engine light on. Fuel tank deformation again after safety recall done in february 2019. 18s32. I do not know if the dealership really fixed it properly the first time, or that ford made a very defective vehicle that should not have been released in the market. Ford doesn’t cover recurrence of the same safety recall.

Engine light on. Fuel tank deformed, defective canister purge valve. Ford doesn’t want to do the service for safety recall 18s32. Ford dealership did not inspected the parts associated for safety recall 18s32 in february 2019 and noted that our vehicle is not part of the recall. Engine light when on june 2021 related to safety recall 18s32 but ford will not fix it.

The steering assist shut off mid drive while turning off the highway and almost got killed by hitting the divider in the center

There is two recalls on my ford focus. The clutch and the transmission. Town and country ford have fixed the clutch 4 times and it stills continues to break. The transmission recall they told me they cannot fix but it is affecting my driving as my car stalls and shudders and cannot drive past 45 mph. They refuse to put me into a rental and they tell me there is nothing they can do to fix it. If this problem does not get fixed it will continue to get worse and eventually cause other problems.

The contact owns a 2016 ford focus. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the clutch assembly had malfunctioned while driving in first and 2nd gear causing a grinding noise to be present and the vehicle would not properly accelerate from a standing start. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the clutch assembly was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 14,000.
