Known Recall Investigations
  • No restart after auto start/stop engages investigation # PE22005

    The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 221 complaints and several field reports alleging an issue with the auto start/stop feature on 2016-2019my honda pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the auto start/stop function engaged. Some of the complainants allege that a jump was required for the vehicle to restart. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5l engine coupled with a 9-speed automatic transmission. To help improve fuel efficiency, the pilot touring and elite vehicles are equipped with auto start/stop capability. When the system is enabled by the driver and certain operating conditions are met, the auto start/stop system will automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver releases the brake pedal after a stop.Odi met with honda on various occasions on this issue. Honda indicated that per the information provided from nhtsa complaints and tread (transportation recall enhancement, accountability and documentation) reports, they have found a correlation with customers allegations for the auto start/stop failure to restart the vehicle when the system is activated. Honda also indicated other honda models (honda odyssey, acura tlx & acura mdx) with the 3.5l engines equipped with the 9-speed automatic transmissions experience the same failure mode.Odi is opening this preliminary evaluation (pe) to determine the scope and severity of the potential problem as well as to fully assess the potential safety related issues.The odi reports cited above is available to review online at nhtsa.Gov under the identification numbers:11460988, 11460883, 11460447, 11459660, 11458735, 11458381, 11457155, 11456934, 11455403 11455401, 11453319, 11453093, 11452332, 11452321, 11451808, 11451347, 11450957, 11450663 11450345, 11449116, 11447644, 11447349, 11446934, 11445511, 11442641, 11442620, 11442535 11442468, 11441844, 11441660, 11441235, 11441204, 11440646, 11439912, 11439645, 11439407 11439010, 11438187, 11438135, 11438002, 11437665, 11437316, 11437030, 11437015, 11436370 11435590, 11435157, 11434390, 11433928, 11433791, 11433774, 11433769, 11432995, 11432947 11432684, 11431787, 11431074, 11430682, 11430372, 11429701, 11429333, 11429157, 11428453 11428450, 11428196, 11428155, 11427940, 11426998, 11426596, 11426261, 11426003, 11425989 11425707, 11425332, 11425299, 11424916, 11424849, 11424823, 11424701, 11424476, 11424313 11423874, 11423376, 11423296, 11423256, 11422948, 11422805, 11422582, 11422535, 11422238 11421517, 11420943, 11420818, 11420073, 11419761, 11418363, 11418287, 11418102, 11418046 11417954, 11417464, 11416669, 11416520, 11416230, 11415596, 11415538, 11415513, 11415511 11415486, 11415484, 11415459, 11415456, 11415177, 11415162, 11414749, 11414726, 11414599 11413697, 11413488, 11413337, 11408277, 11407868, 11407827, 11407811, 11407328, 11406685 11406052, 11406010, 11405300, 11404268, 11404093, 11402786, 11400245, 11399267, 11397177 11396367, 11394835, 11390028, 11389479, 11389300, 11388092, 11387715, 11387418, 11386763 11386291, 11383861, 11378435, 11374730, 11374396, 11373973, 11372622, 11366532, 11366226 11364808, 11364796, 11364625, 11363493, 11362991, 11362177, 11362102, 11362082, 11361413 11361248, 11360107, 11355417, 11355394, 11354935, 11354559, 11354433, 11354112, 11354000 11353603, 11350074, 11349675, 11348637, 11343095, 11342856, 11342592, 11342271, 11339759 11339748, 11339432, 11339322, 11337408, 11337102, 11331934, 11331621, 11329220, 11329145 11329058, 11327864, 11327319, 11326789, 11326397, 11326247, 11325536, 11324266, 11323258 11321898, 11320101, 11319867, 11317205, 11312211, 11311877, 11311010, 11310802, 11307006 11306743, 11299470, 11298616, 11298219, 11292495, 11280570, 11278720, 11278706, 11278088 11278004, 11277093, 11271668, 11271229, 11271053.

The auto idle stop feature activated at a light, but when it normally reactivates (taking foot off the brake, placing foot on the accelerator, or moving steering wheel) the engine did not come back on, the transmission changed to neutral, and some warning lights flashed. A car coming up on the light behind me anticipated me accelerating, but i couldn't start the engine for about 30 seconds. My safety (and of the 5 other passengers) was put at risk by the mal-performance of the feature. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer. The vehicle has not been inspected by others. There were no signs of the problem prior to the failure.

Car goes into neutral or no gear at all when still in drive on its own. Has done this multiple times, will end up getting us killed at some point because when you go to get on the accelerator to get out of someone’s way the engine just revs up.

My car has the auto idol on/off feature. The car started turning the radio off when i sit at a light and the idol turns the car off. This had happened for a bit but we have now graduated to a total stall out. This has happened to me twice now. Once at a light the 2nd time on the highway sitting in traffic. It's very nerve wrecking trying to get your car to restart as traffic is flying past you. I have to put the car in park and restart the whole car. The process takes a few minutes. I can't imagine if this would do this in the middle of an intersection for example when i'm turning left. The dealer can not reproduce this and no errors are being thrown and they have never heard of this. I find this very convenient seeing as a quick google search shows this is a known issue. How has this not been recalled by honda. I'm very scared this could cause an accident

While idle at red light, the automatic idol activated when i press brake with consistent pressure. When i released the brake to start going forward and engage the gas pedal; all red light indicators turned on (parking brakes and shifted into neutral) and the car fully siezed up. No power, no ability put car in park or drive. I attempted to put in park and start car with on/off switch but got no reaction from car . No brake function. I sat in an unresponsive vehicle at 4-way red light intersection. I activated my emergency flashers yet. I repetitively kept pushing power button in effort for car to respond and restart, eventually did and was able to drive off. Working on taking into dealership. This happened approx 1 month ago, a very similar situation occurred again today 6/27/2021 on i45 returning form austin tx.

Auto engine idle stop system - restart failure. Typical even below: 1)auto engine idle stop -engages normally (i.E. Engine stops at light). 2)when time for engine to restart, it doesn’t restart, the mid shows error message and instructs driver to "place car in park". 3)next message is typically to step on brake and press start. 4)this restart process in never quick but often 20-30 seconds. This issue puts me at a risk of being rear ended at a green light and is a safety issue! I would make the car available for inspection. The dealer has not been able to reproduce. However, it has occurred 3 x in the last 1000 miles. Other than the dealer, no one else has inspected. No warnings were received before it first nor subsequently appeared. I believe this first appeared in summer 2019. It appeared multiple times in 2020 and again in 2021. I took it to the dealer in 2019 and 2020. I will schedule another dealer appoint now.

The contact owns a 2017 honda pilot. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced various electrical failures while driving and stationary. The contact stated that the security alarm independently activated without incidence. The contact also stated that an abnormal crackling sound was coming from the engine with several warning lights flashing on the instrument panel. After replacing the battery, the headlights independently illuminated while the vehicle was shut-off. The contact restarted the vehicle and manually turned off the headlights however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the fuse box needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the nhtsa. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Hood flutters at highway speeds and appears that it will open and break windshield, looks as though hood is not latched causing stoppage or pull over for inspection of which the hood is latched

Occasional he when the auto start stop function is activated the car will die and not turn back on. After the car has died and you release your foot from the break nothing happens and multiple lights will turn on the dashboard but the car will not restart unless you put it in park press the start button multiple times. This is very frustrating and very dangerous especially if you’re sitting outside at a busy intersection. I’ve seen numerous reports of this on the internet and it’s been going on over the last several months. I tried to take the vehicle to the dealer and they told me it was not anything they can cover on the warranty i’d have to pay out of pocket.
