  Issue: on certain vehicles, the cover for the manual park release (mpr) lever may not be installed. If the mpr lever is accidentally pushed, the transmission can be shifted out of park without a key in the ignition. Canadian regulations require a cover over this lever. Additionally, the vehicle may also be in factory mode, which disables warning alerts and chimes, and does not display the transmission gear position (under certain conditions). Safety risk: a missing mpr cover could create a situation where the transmission can be shifted without a key in the ignition. If the transmission position is not displayed, a user may not know that the vehicle is not in the park position. If the parking brake is not applied, either of these situations could create a risk of a vehicle roll-away and increase the risk of a crash. • Rear axle bolt failure investigation # RQ23002

  On july 17, 2023, the office of defect investigation (odi) opened this recall query (rq) after receiving 2 consumer complaints alleging loss of vehicle forward power and/or loss of transmission torque of the rear wheels in model year (my) 2020-2022 ford explorer vehicles (subject vehicles). The rq was opened to focus on the effectiveness of the remedies of recalls 22v-255 and 23v-199 related to the alleged problem. Recall 22v-255 involved replacing the bushing and axle cover in the following subject vehicles: 3.3l fhev police built before october 14, 2020, and 3.3l gas police vehicle built before january 31, 2021. For 2.3l rwd, 3.0l phev, 3.3lfhev, and 3.0lst retail (non-police) vehicles, the recall provided an pcm software update to engage the electronic park brake (epb) when park is commanded. The recall addressed a breakage of the rear axle bolt that can cause the driveshaft/half shafts to disconnect, resulting in a loss of transmission torque to the rear wheels necessary to hold park. If the parking brake is not applied, the loss of the primary park torque will allow the vehicle to roll in park increasing the risk of crash and injury. Recall 23v-199 addressed 674 of the subject vehicles produced from february 2, 2019 to april 4, 2022, which received an incorrect remedy under recall 22v-255. The affected vehicles had received a previous powertrain control module (pcm) update which did not include an automatic epb engagement when vehicle is shifted to park. On october 17, 2023, ford filed a new safety recall (recall 23v-675) covering 238,364 my 2020-2022 explorer vehicles with the following powertrains: 3.3l fhev police, 3.3l gas police, 3.0l gas police, 2.3l rwd, 3.0l phev, 3.3l fhev, 3.0l rwd and 3.0l awd, produced from october 22, 2018 to july 6, 2022, equipped with a 3-point mounted axle design. Ford stated that the cause of the bolt fracture is due to joint design not robust to peak axle input torques and manufacturing variability. The primary contributor is insufficient bearings for maximum joint loads. This can result in bearing deformation, increasing bending stress on the bolt, which may lead to fatigue failure. On january 19, 2023, ford amended recall 23v-675 to add 1,942 my 2020-2022 explorer vehicles with the following powertrain: 3.0l rwd platinum and king ranch variant, produced from october 22, 2018 to july 6, 2022, equipped with a 3-point mounted axle design. In addition to the safety recall, ford will conduct a customer satisfaction program for the following my 2020-2022 explorer vehicles with the following powertrains: 2.3l awd, 3.3l gas retail, 3.0l gas awd platinum and king ranch, produced from october 22, 2018 to july 6, 2022. Ford stated that the explorer powerpack variants not covered under recalled 23v-675 do not present an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety due to the combination of lower peak torque levels and torque management strategies to share inputs between front and rear axles, reducing occurrence of higher torque.  according to ford, this is also evidenced by the lower current and projected failure rates. In view of the recall action being taken by ford, odi is closing this rq. Nhtsa will continue to monitor complaints from the customer satisfaction program vehicles and reopen this issue, if necessary. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. • Rearview camera fmvss 111 noncompliance investigation # RQ21002

  On september 23, 2020, ford motor company (ford) filed a noncompliance recall report under 49 cfr part 573 (nhtsa recall no. 20v-575), recalling 620,246 model year (my) 2020 ford f-150, f-250, f-350, f-450, f-550, explorer, mustang, transit, expedition, escape, ranger and edge, and lincoln nautilus and corsair vehicles for a noncompliance with federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 111, rear visibility. Fords recall described the noncompliance as insufficient electrical conductivity within the printed circuit board (pcb) internal to the camera leading to intermittent rearview camera operation. The supplier of the cameras was magna electronics.According to fords chronology in the part 573, during the period february-april 2020, ford identified and monitored warranty claims pertaining to intermittent or inoperative rearview cameras. Ford reviewed supplier product changes, focusing on changes introduced by the supplier in the october-november 2019 time frame. The part 573 stated that the issue was brought to fords critical concerns review group (ccrg) for review on may 12, 2020.On july 7, 2020, nhtsas vehicle research and testing center (vrtc) informed the office of defects investigation (odi) of a trend of my 2020 escape vehicles with rearview camera malfunctions. Odi contacted ford the next day, providing five vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) alleging inoperative rearview cameras. On july 15, 2020, ford met with nhtsa to discuss the rearview camera issue. In a subsequent august 24, 2020 meeting, odi and nhtsas office of vehicle safety compliance (ovsc) met with ford to discuss the recall status and additional voqs. Ford presented rate and scope data for many of its my 2020 products during the august 2020 meeting indicating high failure rates for certain models.This rq is being opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of fords rearview camera recall (20v-575), and fords compliance with reporting requirements.The subject reports referenced in the opening resume are identified by the following odi reference numbers which can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov: 11349813, 11344126, 11342696, 11341486, 11340254, 11337274, 11331444, 11330875, 11329235, 11316960, 11343521, 11341884, 11337226, 11344018, and 11339573.

Ford has a recall for explorer backup cameras failing but ours was not built on the correct date so it doesn't fall under the recall. Yet, our 2020 explorers backup camera shows a blue screen and no video. Took it to the dealership and they said we were 2500 mile out of warranty and we would have to pay. You and ford knows there is an issue and should have to fix this. It goes beyond the build date listed. This vehicle is full of gremlins and should be heavily watched.

Vehicle started, but then every warning lamp and alert triggered on the dashboard and engine shut off. Would not restart, but would just cycle through error/alert messages. Waited 15 minutes, car started but upon putting it in reverse with foot on the brake the car started to drive backwards. No amount of pressure on the brake pedal stopped the car. Had to depress and repress the pedal to stop the vehicle after shifting into gear. Rear cameras failed to activate as well. Thankfully, no one was behind the vehicle and injured. This is the second time this has happened and the second time i have reported to nhtsa. The ford dealership is oblivious to the root cause of the issue. Their quick fix is a battery replacement and software reload.

Reverse camera has displayed very dark once. Reverse camera has displayed solid, bright blue multiple times. Gauge cluster displayed warning message that reverse assistance is unavailable.

Every now and then it will shift hard and jerk you in your seat, it will happen at different speeds, reported to ford garage and they said they haven't heard of any problems with it but the guy went on to ask if it happened with selector in sport mode but we usually drive in eco.

The vehicle suddenly started having transmission issues at 5,600 miles. Very low mileage and no issues until that point. The vehicle started jerking when up and down shifting, sometimes really lurching the vehicle. Took the vehicle to the ford dealer asap and it was returned to me 4 days later. They said the issue was a valve and replaced it. However, on the drive home from the dealership the problem started again. Unfortunately, by that time the dealer was closed. The next morning there was transmission fluid all over the driveway. The car has now been towed back to the ford dealership. We have been unable to use our vehicle for about 12 days now and are waiting to hear back from the service department.

Automatic transmission "jumps" and clunks in and out of gear at speeds between 25-35 mph, causing vehicle to lunge. Also, experienced vehicle sporadically engaging into gear from a stop sign and lunging forward for several seconds, almost causing a car to rear end my vehicle. Problem has been reported to dealer, but dealer will not look at it for more than 2 weeks. No warning lamps or system messages appear on the dash board. This is a major safety problem as it causes the vehicle to lunge and jump randomly while driving or accelerating from a stop.

The backing aid camera turns blue out of nowhere when put in reverse gear, which causes the parking warning system to fail, the forward collision warning turned on by itself while driving on the freeway, there were absolutely no cars or objects in front at the time, causing the suv to abruptly come to a complete stop, putting my self and my family at risk of being hit by a vehicle in the back. This is absolutely unacceptable.

Transmission started shifting on it’s on. Mostly down shifting. Gas mileage went from 28mpg to around 20 mpg. Dealer had to order parts-not available for 4- 6 weeks. Never know when it will happen. No recall or warning lights dealer aware of this issue

Fireno injuries0 deaths0 when shifting into drive, vehicle will randomly have a hard brake pedal and vehicle will lurch forward with increased rpm. Use of reverse, vehicle will suddenly stop and sound as if you hit something. Brake pedal very hard.. The issue occurs from a stationary condition, in driveway or public parking areas, so this causes concern that it did result in a collision with another vehicle. Issue cannot be repeated on demand. It is entirely random and every drive has to be approached with the expectancy that the vehicle will move without normal brakes to stop. There are no alerts to tell us why (or which system) is the issue. This has occurred randomly since leasing this explorer . Ford service seems surprised and unaware of this
