• Recall 184700 [USA]: A turn signal that activates in the opposite direction of what was intended by the driver increases the risk of a crash.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2017 sonata, 2016-2017 sonata hybrid, and sonata plug-in hybrid vehicles. The smart junction box (sjb) software logic may not properly interpret the signals received from the multifunction switch, which could cause the turn signal to activate in the opposite direction of what the driver intended.

• Recall 230303 [USA]: A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 tucson and sonata hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.
  dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new knock sensor detection system (ksds). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on november 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed january 15, 2022. • Recall 213889 [USA]: A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2018 sonata, 2016-2018 sonata hybrid, 2018-2020 accent, and 2016-2017 azera vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard number 401, "internal trunk release."

• Recall 124966 [USA]: In the event of a crash, an air bag that does not inflate fully increases the risk of injury.
  Hyundai motor company (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2017 hyundai elantra vehicles manufactured april 15, 2016, to september 13, 2016, and sonata vehicles manufactured may 27, 2016 to september 16, 2016. In these vehicles, the end seal for the driver's frontal air bag inflator may not have been properly installed, possibly resulting in reduced inflation of the frontal air bag in the event of a crash.

As a result, there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine and/or the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with worn connecting rod bearings, the engine could fail. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. In some cases, a damaged connecting rod could puncture the engine block and cause an oil leak. Note: for the sonata model, only the sonata hybrid is affected by this recall. Additional note: engine compartment fires can happen for many different reasons. In some cases, there is too much damage to find the cause of a fire.   Issue: on certain vehicles, a part in the trunk release latch could fail. If this happens, the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk compartment may not work properly. This could prevent a person that is trapped inside the trunk from opening it. Note: for the 2016 model year sonata, only the sonata hybrid is affected by this recall. Safety risk: if a person is closed inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out. This could create a risk of injury. • Recall 2019012 [Canada]: Engine
  Issue: when repairs were completed under recall campaign 2015-428 (hyundai #r0101) or 2017197 (hyundai #r0130), the high pressure fuel pipe may not have been properly installed on the fuel pump outlet. A fuel leak could occur if the pipe was damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the recall repair. Safety risk: leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source could increase the risk of a fire causing injury and/or property damage. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. If fuel leakage is detected, the fuel pipe will be replaced with a new one.

• Recall 2018135 [Canada]: Powertrain
  On certain plug-in hybrid vehicles, the battery voltage protection device (vpd) switch could inadvertently activate. If the vpd switch is activated, electricity to the vehicle's electric motor may be disconnected. If this occurs while the vehicle is driven under electric vehicle (ev) mode, the vehicle may experience a loss of motive power, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: dealers will remove the current vpd switch and install a newly designed battery management system module containing an overvoltage protection device. The corresponding wiring harness will also be installed. Note: this condition would result in the of the “check hybrid system" warning light illuminating.

• Pedestrian alert sounds investigation as of 20230127

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072. Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.On january 27, 2023, nhtsa opened defect petition (dp) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On june 24, 2023 and as supplemented on june 25, 2023, the petitioner notified nhtsa he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. • Loss of motive power investigation as of 20220912

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received a petition on july 13, 2022, requesting a defect investigation into an alleged defect of the "oil drain pan assemblies" on the following 83 models/model year vehicles stated by the petitioner: 2006-2019 hyundai sonata, 2013-2018 hyundai santa fe sport, 2010-2012 and 2019-2020 hyundai santa fe, 2010-2015 and 2018-2019 hyundai tucson, 2011-2021 kia sportage 2005-2020 kia optima, 2011-2020 kia sorento, 2010-2013 kia forte, 2010-2013,kia forte coup, and 2007-2010 kia rondo vehicles equipped with the 1.6l t-gdi gamma, 2.4l theta ii gdi, 2.4l in-line gdi theta ii, kappa, and 3.8l v-shaped gdi lambda-ii engines. The petition also cites additional hyundai/kia vehicles that use similar drain pan assemblies as the above-mentioned vehicles as having drain pan assembly failures. The petitioner provided subject and peer vehicles information related to alleged engine failures. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745.According to the petition, the hyundai/kia vehicle owners have made allegations of oil leakage failures occurring at highway speeds, without malfunction, indicator lights, or the leakage associated with under-tightening an oil drain plug, or a plug or pan with damaged thread. The alleged defects are causing engines to seize and loss of motive power. A defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petitioner identified a number of complaints received by nhtsa alleging complete engine failure from a variety of models stated above along with other models. • Engine fires investigation as of 20211222

  On march 29, 2019, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 on hyundai and pe19-004 on kia) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai and kia vehicles.  during the pe investigations, hyundai and kia issued several recalls to address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failures involving various engine types.  the remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement.  additionally, both manufacturers have been installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure).Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). On december 22, 2021, odi upgraded pe19-003 and pe19-004 to this engineering analysis (ea21-003, covering both hyundai and kia) to evaluate the scope of the prior recalls related to engine failures/fires and the efficacy of the recall remedies for the recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.  the former issue involved approximately 550,000 my 2013 hyundai elantra, my 2011 kia sorento, and my 2012-2015 kia rio.  the latter issue involved approximately 2.5 million recalled vehicles, which have been identified as displaying potential remedy concerns: hyundai recalls 15v-568, 17v-226, 20v-746, and 21v-727; and kia recalls 17v-224, 19v-120, 20v-750, and 21v-844. Regarding the recall scope issue, among all of the scope vehicles identified at ea opening, odi found only the my 2011 kia sorento vehicles equipped with both the theta ii 2.4l 4-cylinder multi-point injection (mpi) and the lambda ii 3.5l 6-cylinder mpi engines experienced relatively high rates of reported fires.  in december 2023, kia issued recall 23v-877 that will cover about 80,000 my 2011 kia sorento vehicles equipped with the theta ii 2.4l mpi engines.  the remedy will involve an inspection, and if necessary, a replacement of the engine, as well as the installation of ksds.  it should be noted that in 2021 these vehicles were included in a ksds product improvement campaign with warranty extension.  for the my 2011 sorento vehicles equipped with the lambda ii 3.5l engines, odi believes that future engine failures/fires involving these vehicles will likely be due to a lax in adhering to the proper or scheduled engine maintenance (regular engine oil changes), rather than a design or manufacturing engine issue. Regarding the issue of the efficacy of the recall remedies, odi found the majority of the recalled hyundai and kia vehicles, by model, experienced lower reported fire rates after the remedies were applied.  furthermore, odi found that for most vehicles that did not receive the recall remedies, by model, experienced relatively high fire rates.  to address this problem, hyundai informed odi in december 2023, that it will renotify all of its owners covered by the hyundai recalls of engine failures/fires every 8 months for the next 3 years.  in december 2023, kia stated that it will renotify the majority of its owners every 8 months for the next 3 years.Several previously recalled kia models are excluded from the renotification due to their lower reported rates of engine fires.  overall, the renotification actions will help to increase the recall completion rates, thus reduce the frequency of engine fires in the future. In view of the recall action being taken by kia and renotification actions being taken by both kia and hyundai, odi is closing this engineering analysis.  also, both companies have been released from the 2020-iniated consent orders (kia since november 2022 and hyundai since november 2023).  the agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.  to review the reports cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.

• Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation as of 20190419

  The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit.The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems.The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi?S current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low.While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events.Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring.The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations.In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of

Trunk latch failed. Trunk would not open, even when used emergency trunk release. Eventually, latch broke and trunk would not close. Two potential safety issues: 1. Emergency trunk release would not work, negating ability for someone trapped in trunk to open it; 2. Exhaust fumes entering cabin through open trunk.

The contact owns a 2017 hyundai sonata. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was restarted, and the power steering functionality was restored. The contact stated that the traction control and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

The trunk will not open by any means, at times it can be opened, but the emergency release does not work. If anyone gets in, they cannot get out, especially with the hybrids which do not have fold down back seats. Federal mandate states the trunk must have an operational emergency release, but with the trunk latch issue, the emergency release does not work.

The trunk will not open by any means, the button inside, the key fob, the mechanical key, the smart trunk open feature. Mine is the hybrid and does not have fold down back seats. So there is no way to open it from inside or outside only via the inside of the trunk. It just has 28,045 miles. I called the dealer bob king hyundai and they did not know if it is under warranty and it will cost $130 just to look at it?

Was driving on a busy road. Turned the corner and went to accelerate and once i hit 45 my steering locked up, couldn't turn or adjust my vehicle at all. I had my 3 kids in the car and was lucky we could get to the side of the road. Shut off the car and started it up and seemed fine. Then later that day i was driving on highway going 65 and my steering locked up and i couldn't drive. Lucky it was early morning and no traffic because i was able to get to the side of the road. This needs to be recalled before someone loses their life!

The contact owns a 2017 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that while merging onto a highway at 50 mph, the vehicle independently decelerated to 30 mph and shifted into limp mode. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had initially taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact then had the vehicle towed to a dealer where he was informed that the failure was linked to a software update. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,000.

While driving the engine light comes on and blinks rapidly and the car drops from the speed of 65 to 15 or below in second. The code was P1326 with is the knock senor. I changed it and the code went away. Weeks later the code returned while driving again with me and my 3 little babies in the car again. Same issue engine light came on blinking speed drop rapidly. Read this is an occurring issue with this car and it must be taken in to the dealer for fixing.Dealer refused to check out the issue.

I had just left my house and was just a few miles down the road turning onto the main highway. The steering wheel jerked and then the steering wheel locked up like it had no power steering and i could not turn the wheel. Three lights came on on the dashboard, an exclamation point, a steering wheel and the traction lights all came on. It was a sunny day and there was no rain the pavement was not slick. I had to pull over on the side of the road and let my husband drive my vehicle. We had to take it in to the dealership and they said it was a sensor in the steering column and the entire steering column would have to be replaced at a cost if $2000.00. This is not a driver error this is a manufacturer error and it is not covered under any warranty. My car only has 67,500 miles on it and this should be recalled for the 2017 hyundai sonata‘s. After researching online about steering issues with the hyundai sonata’s i discovered that the 2015 hyundai sonata’s have been recalled for the steering and so have the hyundai elantra’s. I called the hyundai corporation and they said that there had to be a class action lawsuit for the 2017 models to get a recall. This could have been extremely dangerous had i been on a busier street. Hyundai needs to step up and recall this.

My steering keeps locking up while i am driving down the road. I have to stop my car, put it in park and turn my car off. Then restart my car in order for it to unlock. I have almost cause some wrecks. My car is not that old to be having this issue. When i went on youtube to see what i can do to fix it, i found out this is a common problem.

Car caught fire while driving on the freeway. Driver had only been driving the car for about 10 to 15 minutes. Got on freeway from downtown houston and was on freeway for less than 10 miles. Witness said car was on fire under vehicle in the rear of the hybrid vehicle. Driver pulled over to feeder of fwy and car would not go into park so he turned vehicle off and exited vehicle. Driver saw car was on fire and ran to safety.

As i was backing into a parking space, the steering wheel locked up, i couldn't turn the steering wheel in either direction and the steering wheel light with the exclamation mark came on.

The thea-engine is bad and needs to be replaced. After diagnostics determined the engine indeed needs to be replaced; they added the rods and bearings did not cause issue so they will not cover cost. The big lie is that the, "rods and bearings was not part of the original evaluation diagnostics done on the engine. It was added to remove the connection that cause prior recalls. It is the same problem and millions of unsuspecting auto purchasers should be made aware. This company has been making cars since 2011 with faulty engines, "stay away" the dealership said the engine must be replaced

I bought this vehicle from a used car lot. I keep all maintenance up on this vehicle since i work as a lube maintenance technician. I noticed that the engine burns oil at a very fast rate. Not even 2000 miles into my maintenance interval the engine is dry. The oil lamp turns on. There is no leaks from the engine. I knew this was gonna be a problem to fix and i knew it would be very expensive. I just basically changed my oil more often. I was driving it from work and then it suddenly started idling rough and it started stuttering real bad. I took it to a mechanic to diagnose the problem and they told me a cylinder is blown and it could possibly need a new engine. I've only had this car for 2 years!! And i'm dealing with having to replace and engine on a 2017 hyundai sonata i have kept very well maintained. This car has only traveled in the southern california area. The trunk latch not locking. Opened trunk in driveway, tried to close trunk and it wouldn't lock/close.

After transmission was replace in december 2020, noticed starting in jan 2021, that vehicle did not stay in park and rolled back up to 5 feet from where parked. Pictures from parking lot, 3/6/2021 rolled back 5 feet from where it parked. Mileage on 3/6/21 was 96858. On 4/15/21 we have video with the noise that it is making when in park and rolls back (unable to attach here). Mileage on 4/15/2021 was 97881. Car was parked in a handicap spot at a restaurant. The amount of rollback could cause someone walking behind the vehicle to be crushed or killed. The consumer stated the failure occurred on numerous occasions, not only on an incline. The dealer was unable to replicate the failure; therfore, the dealer was unable to repair the vehicle.

The power steering on 2017 hyundai sonata's will randomly stop working while i am driving. It started as an every month occurrence and now has become more than weekly occurrence. The steering locks up and two light indicators illuminate on the dashboard. These two lights are not on prior to the random power steering failure. My family's safety is at risk every time this occurs as are those on the road near my vehicle. I purchased this vehicle from my 88 year old grandmother. This extreme safety problem would have killed her had it happened when she was driving. I have taken the vehicle to a local dealership who seemed to be aware of the notorious problem on 2017 sonata's but they explained that they are unable to reproduce the failure in their shop, so they are unable to fix the problem.

The trunk was hard to open at first, then it would not open and all of a sudden it would not close. It has to be tied down to stay shut. It came open by itself while driving. Had to have the latch replaced.

The trunk will not open by any means and the emergency release does not work. If anyone gets in the trunk, they cannot get out especially with the hybrids which do not have fold down back seats federal mandate states the trunk must have an operational emergency release, but with the trunk latch issue, the emergency release does not work

While accelerating, especially up inclines, i would hear a knocking sound, feel vibrations, the check engine light would come on and the acceleration would not work. I would coast for a little bit (up to about a minute) before the acceleration would work again properly. Driving from work my car steering seized up. The power steering light and traction control lights came on. Then i shut car off and restarted it. Then power steering was back and indicator light were gone. It happen multiple of times

My steering locked up as i was driving. I was making a left hand turn and it would barely turn. As i straightened the steering wheel it was still extremely difficult to turn. I managed to get it pulled in to the gas station and turned off the motor to pump my gas. It did fine after i cranked it back up.

Dealership is saying it will cost over $700 to fix, with all the complaints this shows to be manufacturer issues. It should be fixed free of charge, i will purchase a brand new car, before i put any more money into a ticking time bomb as there is a current recall in regards to the engine. Currently have 70,000 miles on the vehicle.

I notice that there is a pop like a potential gear or internal part is broken when turning the steering wheel from left to right and vise versa. It has sense happened everyday following the first event. This seems to be a complaint made by several people and i see no recall as of yet. Hyundai has addressed older vehicles with the same problem and issued a recall but nothing as of yet for 2017 or newer. Had this happened while i was on the interstate or making a sharp turn on a mountain road, as i typically do, it could have forced me into the next car, wall, or even off of a mountain side.

I thought that i had simply bought a "lemon" - i had to have the transmission replaced less than a week after i bought the car but after looking up my make and model on carcomplaints.Com i realized that many other sonatas besides mine have lost power steering, many of them while driving (some at highway speeds). Besides brakes, steering is probably the biggest safety issue on any car. Hyundai has a really good warranty and i bought a more comprehensive warranty so my repairs should not cost me anything but the fact remains, this model sonata has a significant safety defect that needs to be addressed by hyundai before someone gets killed, if it has not happened already. I feel fortunate that my power steering never went out while i was driving the car like many others did. *tr

My car won't turn on when i turn the ignition key. It stays silent no click or anything indicating its trying to turn on. The vehicle is always stationary when this happens. It randomly does this and rarely it turns on when i turn the ignition.

After a tire change the hazard light and tire light came on. I was advised to take it to the shop and see if the sensor needs to be reset. I called a tow truck and had them tow it to happy hybrid in austin tx and was advised it may be my hybrid battery generator as my hybrid battery was at 5%. While driving on tx 1604 highway doing 70 mph my sonata jolted and lost acceleration and the engine light came on. I attempted to accelerate by putting my foot all the way down on the gas peddle, but my car did not accelerate. It took about 1 minute to get steering wheel to move at all, managed to get back in parking lot (barely) and shut car off and restarted it. My power steering was back and indicator light were gone. I'm going to dealership tomorrow. ( will update) had this happened at a normal speed for diving, it would have been very dangerous! Now, i am afraid to drive my only car.

At first it was about one inch chips that were peeling away. Recently after a hard rain a large chunk of paint came off. I have seen other sonatas with the same problem. All of the cars that i've seen with this problem are white in color.

Vehicle has been serviced for 2 recalls on the engine stalling and rpm slowing making car practically undriveable. Took to dealer on 12/29 after it happened a second time in two days. There were unable to look at vehicle that day and told me to bring back next day. It stalled again while i was leaving parking lot, i asked the maintenance tech to come and look to see what was happening, he refused. Dropped car off on 12/30. On 1/2/20, dealer called to say no error codes found, after driving 100 plus miles, were unable to determine cause of problem and i should pick up my vehicle. I explained this is unacceptable. They called me back later claiming it is the electric steering column portion of motor control power steering rack and want $1800 to fix. This is a major safety issue, loosing complete power and ability to steer while driving. Dealer has done nothing to reassure me that this is the actual problem.

Truck latch initially would not open with out the key or dashboard option now will not remain close.

While driving the vehicle on a city street, i attempted to make a right turn and experienced great difficulty in turning the steering wheel. I then started a left turn and experienced the same. I immediately drove the vehicle home. I feel that it would be very dangerous to continue driving this vehicle. This should be investigated immediately!

At interstate speeds the steering wheel sticks at the center position. When it unsticks the vehicle wanders to the left or right so you tend to wander back and forth to go straight.

My trunk latch mecanisum broke and it was troubling to think that my purse or luggage was in it or i could not get to my meds or a spare tire in the event it was needed. There is no way to get into the locked trunk accept to take the entire back seat out unlike most cars where you can pull a latch on the back of the rear seat and bring the seat down. I have what is called the "smart trunk" that opens without the use of a key if you are standing in front of it. I had to put out just under $500.00 to get into the trunk and repair the latch. I do hope that you can do a safety recall on the latch soon. This happened to me and i was not at home and i had to wait to get an appointment at the dealership to get it repaired.

Issue #1 brakes making a wierd squalling sound when we apply the brakes at various times driving . We brought our 2017 sonata hybrid numerous times without any fix ! Serious safety issue ! Issue #2 wei brought our 2017 hyundai sonata with only 14,000 miles to service dept. At hyundai to inspect tires & brakes & oil change before leaving on our long trip to miami . Everything checked out ok ! We drove 2/3 of way on i-75 highway & only stopped once for gas . We noticed a thumping sound & our car started "pulling to the right". We thought it was a flat tire & stopped at the next rest area to inspect tires for proper psi inflation...All tires checked out ok?? There was no "warning lights on " so we got back onto i-75 & we really got nervous as the shaking really got worse as we drove on. We slowed down to 40 mph. With flashers on. We called roadside assistance for directions to nearest hyundai dealership. We slowly made it to rick case hyundai who inspected our car & were "shockingly told that the (2) right side tires experienced "belt seperations " & they had to be replaced immediately with a new wheel alignment (over $ 500). Tech said ! Wow that looks like two manufacturer defective tires ! We carried 2 tires back tto our local hyundai service dept in npr & will try to get reimbursed by hankook ! This is a "serious safety issue " with these tires as we have read all the complaints about these model tires. We would like to replace the other (2) tires that are still on vehicle with these major safety issues ! My wife & i dont feel safe with the tires & brakes concerns !

2017 hyundai sonata shut down when i came to a stop light. Started car back up and drove 5miles home. The second time it shut down were the next day , driving my car came to a complete stop and car shut down. I started cat back up drove home.

Car loses power in situations where you need to accelerate like passing and merging. We just bought this vehicle 8/3/2019. This is bery dangerous. After the car jerks and loses power, then it suddenly comes back full throttle. I was almost hit by another car as iost power while merging into 55mph traffic. The car is now in the shop and we are awaiting a diagnostic. This is very dangerous and if not corrected should cause these cars to be taken out off the road.

Trunk latch failed completely. Failure to release by key fob, failure to release from interior button, and failure to release from manual lock cylinder.

If the vehicle is left in drive and turned off it will roll backwards. I got out of the driver seal and the wife was in the passenger seat and turned the vehicle before she got because she was on the phone. The vehicle rolled in the road way, thankfully nothing happened to anybody. According to the dealership the newer models do not do this.

After driving an hour or two, when you stop and fill her up with gas, the car engine will not start after it's full and you're ready to get out on the road again. You have to wait like 20 minutes and maybe more, before the car starts again. Meantime, the gas attendant is already annoyed why you can't move your car?

2017 sonata sport uses 1/2 qt of oil every 1000 miles

Over the past month my car has been in the shop four times due to it malfunctioning while i am driving it - and that is not including when i took it in at the end of august because the trunk merchanism broke and it wouldn't close. The first time happened over labor day weekend when i was on a roadtrip, out of nowhere the car would not accelerate and, like others on the nhsa website have stated, it was very jumpy and wouldn't go past 45 mph. I took it to the dealer where they replaced a safety recall in the wiring system and it worked fine for a few days before it had the same problem again. When i took it to the dealer the second time they told me the engine needed to be replaced because the engine was essentially broken and there were little metal pieces inside. It took a week to replace and then everything was fine for a few days until yesterday. Yesterday the battery light turned on and the repair shop let me know the battery was in good health but low on charge so they charged it and it seemed to be working fine. Then this morning while on the highway all of the emergency service lights (check engine, check brakes, etc.) came on at the same time and the steering wheel locked up and it was undrivable. I by some miracle managed to pull the car over where i had to get the car towed to the dealer where i am awaiting to hear what is wrong. Do not purchase this car. After reading up on it apparently there seems to be issues with the engine and electrical system, that is extremely dangerous. I was lucky enough to not hit anyone but i could have been seriously injured all four times the car malfunctioned. All of these issues have been confirmed by the dealer to have been due to manufactural defects - something that is out of my control and shouldn't happen for a car that is under 26k miles.

Steering locks up while driving. Steering makes a clunky noise and vibration when turning to the left. Steering warning light and traction control light comes on and goes off intermittently. Took it to dealership and they couldn't duplicate the issue.

What a horrible experience, at about 6:45am esatern time on 07/25/2019, while driving on the highway the car trunk flipped open without any warning signs or any signs of defect and i immediately pulled over by emergency side and tried to close it back, after all failed attempts to close the trunk, with trunk wild open, i had to drive straight down to the hyundai dealership were the car was purchased (rick case hyundai duluth 3190 satellite blvd, duluth ga 30096) and to my utmost surprise, after explaining the incident to the service manager, i was told that the warranty does not cover such mechanical defect and they charged me $233 just to fix the latch, i tried to contact hyundai customer care and they did not offer any solutions at all, what a very poor customer experience. This is the 3rd time i have to deal with this problem of trunk latch problems and no one seems to care or help out.. Really disappointed with hyundai. My vehicle is under 70,000 miles. I was informed by the dealer service department it needs a new transmission. The transmission is not shifting properly and has caused the vehicle to stall on the road on a couple of occasions. The vehicle is making a grinding/clicking noise when it shifts. The dealer is not honoring the power train warranty from the manufacturer.

While driving on the highway, a notice was shown on the dashboard that the hybrid system and cruise control system were no longer functional. The vehicle then started to accelerate, uphill, without the gas pedal being engaged. The vehicle was taken off the highway and when coming to a near complete stop the vehicle stopped working completely. After restarting the vehicle and driving it to a safe place to park a notice indicated the breaks were no longer functional. The car was subsequently towed. The vehicle has had numerous repairs since and is still experiencing the same issue(s) as of 12/05/2019.

I bought the car used from a scam dealership. I had no idea that there was an engine recall in january until it turned off and on just one week after leaving the lot. My vehicle has 65000 miles and the steering would freeze up while driving on a local street and almost had a collission. First time i noticed the problem was when my vehicle had 55000 milea and it was under warranty. They replaced a part at that time and now just 2 months later i have the same problem but the dealership refuse to fix the problem. It is a safety issue and it started while under warranty. Engine cuts off in the middle of traffic would not allow me to move gear shift reported issue since october 2018. When driving this vehicle at nigh, the headlight projection is so poor that visibility is restricted to about 40 feet in front of the vehicle. We've experienced numerous close calls due to poor headlight projection. Complaints on the internet echo our complaint.

Power steering locks up or stops, when car is moving or when parking, i have to shut the car off to restore steering. This problem has nearly cause 3 accidents, the hyundia dealer had the car in shop 2 times and said they can't duplicate the problem so the can't fix. I know many other owners have had the same problem. This problem happened on the hwy's and in town driving.

I received a recall notice in the mail on 06/27/19 stating that i needed to bring my car in to have the computer updated to protect the engine from excessive connecting rod bearing damage. I went in to have the service done on 7/1/19. When i came to pick it up the representative told me that the update may or may not have resolved the issue and that my car at any time in the future could go into what they called safe mode. He explained what that was and i truly did not want to take the car home. I no longer felt safe driving it. I contacted customer care by phone, corporate by email and have been told the same thing over and over again. They can only do something if the car malfunctions. I had scheduled a trip to montgomery the day after i had taken my car in to take my 80+ year old parents to see my sisters new home. I ended up having to rent a car because i did not want to take the chance on ending up stranded on the side of the road with my parents. There is apparently a harness that they can put on if the car malfunctions and i do not understand why they do not just do that if there is a possible problem that could occur. I no longer feel safe in my vehicle and feel that i will have to rent a car every time i have to travel. I feel totally helpless in this situation.

I bought my car november 28, 2017. On june 27, 2019, the interior lights and the license plate light were inoperative. I've brought the car into the dealership i bought the car from three times, but they were unable to fix the problem. Now, my car has been in a different dealership for the past approximately two weeks, and it still hasn't been fixed. If i drive a vehicle without a functioning license plate light, i'm subject to a $30 fine. I've begun to assemble documentation for a lemon law complaint. I'm including the repair invoice for the first time i brought my car into the original dealership and the last time i brought the car into the original dealership. Early june 2019 i received a letter regarding a recall on the engine, i took it to the local dealership and got the required update. On june 17, 2019 my vehicle became inoperable on the highway due to the recall, which placed it in a safety mode and caused the engine light to blink continuously. I parked my vehicle, contacted hyundai towing and had it delivered to a dealership. After four days with no call to update me on my vehicle, offer a loaner car or rental, i contacted the 800 number and was told there was nothing hyundai could do to assist with the inconvenience they have caused. My complaint was sent to case manager, diane c. (714-965-3595). I never received a response from diane. On july 13, 2019, i traveled to chicago, il, while on the highway going around 70 mph, the car again placed itself in safety mode, pulling it back down to 45 mph and causing the vehicles behind me to brake and swerve in the attempt to not rear end me. I immediately went to the closest hyundai dealership, rogers hyundai, 2700 s michigan ave, chicago il, 60616. The service manager, tony serpico, was no help to me whatsoever. He was very rude and insincere to my problem. I contacted the towing company again and had my vehicle towed to another dealership. I needed to return home for work so i rented a vehicle at my own expense. Diane finally contacted me after i called and sent 'alerts' to her several times. I explained the whole situation to her and have yet to get a response regarding my vehicle, a rental or my reimbursement. I am very upset at the way hyundai has treated me throughout this whole ordeal, which is at no fault of my own. Instead of replacing the engine or buying back the vehicle hyundai continues to put me and my family in danger.

While driving on interstate 70 in ohio my sharkfin blew off. I was going around 75 mph. No vehicle was in front of me. I heard a very loud noise which lasted a few seconds. Within 10 miles i stopped my car a service station and discovered my plastic shark fin cover had blown off. Nothing hit the car. No blood, no scratches. When i reported it to the dealership they said i must have taken it through a car wash. I have had 3 sonatas and have never taken one through a car wash. When i first got to the dealership the receptionist at the service dept. Said they had been having problems with that part, but the service manager tried denying it. I have been talking to other sonata owners and some have experience a similar problem.When i reported it to hyundai they failed to take action. The photos will show that the very small screws in the electrical component that attach to the plastic shark fin cover have very little penetration into the shark fin cover. Incident happened on may 9, 2019, reported it on may 10. I ended up paying $353.03 for the part and installation. I am suggesting that the wind at 75 mph lifted the plastic cover because it sounded like a ripping sound like one screw at a time. Not only did it cause me to take my eyes of the road, but the part flying back could have posed a serious safety to another driver driving behind me. And like i mentioned this has happened to other owners. I believe it is a design failure.

The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was determined that due to the oil consumption, the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer stated that the contact needed to drive 1,000 miles and then check the oil consumption. The failure recurred on november 23, 2019. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 55,000.

Tl* may 3, 2019 2:34 p.M, contact was driving very slowly to make the turn into my assigned parking space, when all of a sudden, on its own, my car accelerated at great speed, forcefully pressing me against the seat back, flying over the stop curb at the front of my space, continuing across the gravel leeway before smashing part way through the cement block wall that surrounds our property. Demolished the front of my car as it punched a large hole in the cement block wall. Air bags deployed, causing deep bruising, swelling and abrasions on arms, legs and stomach. My left shoulder joint and upper back were wrenched enough that i am having to do physical therapy. Firemen and emt's were there and checked me out. The police were on site and filed a report. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified. My insurance company had the car moved to a collision facility and declared the car a total loss. I bought the car new with 1350 miles on it. The mileage was just 3,591, when the car accelerated on its own, out of control and smashed through the concrete block wall. My car does not have any warning sign or sound when an adult passenger does not have the seat belt on. I bought the car as new jan last year and i do not recall that this ever worked. I double checked the existence of the problem driving slowly within the cul-de-sac. I have an appointment with the dealership tomorrow to check the issue. It is possible that many other cars like mine have this problem and this might be a case for a recall.

After receiving recall mail, yesterday i left my vehicle at service. They gave me back my car and told me they have fixed it. After driving less than a mile the engine stoped and a yellow light turned on. Again left my vehicle at the same service, today i called them and told me that they will probably fixing it after receiving the part next week. If it won't get fixed they are planning to change the engine. Is this a normal process! And what happens to the value of the car if the engine changes?

Problem: steering sticks at center position. It takes extra force to move it either right or left from center position when making small steering corrections. This occurred when highway driving at 65 mph. After about 60 miles problem ended. I am concerned problem will reoccur and be worst.

For some period of time, now, i have lost engine power, while in motion. It happens sporadically when i cannot press the gas pedal for continuous motion forward. This has been happening on a highway as well as city streets. It pauses when i press the gas pedal and the delay is momentary. Lately when starting the car for the first time in the morning i hear continuous knocking until i drive for several miles, then it dissipates.

I was basically forced to purchase another vehicle with another company, because the hyundai representative could not give me a date or an approximation of when the vehicle will be fixed. I was in a collision in which i was going 10 mph and the other car was going 45 mph on a divided highway intersection. My airbags deployed. However, when the driver's steering wheel airbag deployed it shot the hyundai logo from the steering wheel into my arm at 200 mph. The only injury that i sustained was from the "h" logo that was propelled into my right forearm; i sustained a deep bone bruise/minor impact fracture. When i reported this to hyundai they investigated and determined that the airbags deployed properly and that i should expect the logo to be shot from the steering wheel along with the airbag. However, i also own a 2011 hyundai and the steering wheel does not have a separate logo but an imprinted "h". I don't think that when an airbag deploys it should shoot anything except for the airbag. The logo hit my arm but if it hit my eye i would have lost my eye. If it hit my throat it could have collapsed my airway. Airbags are supposed to protect you and not cause injury. I don't understand why i should have anticipated that this piece would become a projectile in an accident, or why its acceptable.

Antenna cap keeps coming off. Second time replacement. This is really aggravating now the warranty will not cover it.

My car is a death trap, i have already been in one accident and too scared to drive it, it just sits in my driveway. When you make a left turn at say a red light the car go's about 5 feet and then stops for 3 seconds, people behind honk at you and then the car rockets forward, i have already been hit once and the other driver took off, so i was left with the bill. I was driving very slowly to make a turn into my garage when the car accelerated on its own and hit the side of my house breaking through a patio guard rail. The front wheels of the car went over the bulkhead. Insurance company sent a wrecker to retrieve the vehicle. The insurance company totaled the car. This unintended acceleration had occurred once when i was driving on a state road in cruise control when the car accelerated beyond the set cruise control speed. This occurred again on the day before the accident. This unintended acceleration had also occurred when my husband was driving the car while in speed control.

I noticed immediately that the car seemed to drag during takeoff. On monday upon crossing the bridge down lurlene b wallace blvd the car engine shut down in the middle of traffic.

I have a hyundai sonata hybrid 2017. The braking system creates a howling sound when the brake is applied. It happened intermittently. I sent my car to the hyundai dealer near me three times. My car is a 2017 sonata se 2.4l just shy of 21k miles. I use the parking brake all the time and yesterday when i got home and depressed the parking brake pedal it went all the way to the floor - no more working parking brake! On the floor i found a small locknut and a washer that fell off the threaded end of the cable at the parking brake pedal. I repaired it myself by adding a second regular m6 nut (10mm wrench) and locked the two nuts together. Adding the second nut and locking them together should permanently fix the issue.

My vehicle was in park on my street. My husband was in the passenger seat. I exited the driver side of the vehicle and opened the driver side rear door. I kneeled on the seat to reach behind the passenger side seat to grab my laundry basket. The car began to roll backwards. We hit a vehicle directly behind us and ended up in our neighbors yard. We contacted the police and a tow truck was sent. The tow truck arrived from joyce's towing on mt. Nebo road in pittsburgh pa. The tow truck driver noticed that while the car was in park the wheels were spinning. The body shop in which we took our vehicle to, is having an issue trying to duplicate the problem. In the meantime, i do not feel that our vehicle is safe, and do not want to risk this incident happening again, being that it was an issue in 2011-2014 hyundai sonatas.

Minor vibration on front end axle during initial acceleration started early during ownership, but increased over time with mileage and usage. Took into dealership where purchased for diagnosis, but could not isolate cause. Problem worsened over next couple of weeks, so took it back in to same dealership. Finally diagnosed the problem to be a missing circlip ("c" clip) that holds the cv axle in the transmission case. Without it, the axle itself was working its way out of the transmission case, and vibrating because of its looseness. Researched the problem and found that full separation of the axle from the transmission could result in uncontrolled behavior of car, and inevitable accident or worse. This was a manufacturing/assembly error, and could be a systemic problem in the assembly process. The repair was performed by the dealership under warranty, but this could present a dangerous risk to other 2017 sonata purchasers, so i write this complaint as both a civic right and a responsible citizen. When discussing this issue with a hyundai representative, i was told in blunt and no uncertain terms that the problem was resolved and there was no further action or discussion that was necessary. Our prior 2011 hyundai's engine had seized at highway speed, and my wife lost all power steering and braking. Despite safety issues with both 2011 and 2017 sonatas, there was no acknowledgement nor admission of accountability. I would like to be reassured that this axle circlip problem is acknowledged and rectified, as the greater safety of sonata owners may be at risk. We personally now feel unsafe in the sonata model, and only purchased a second one under the assumption that lightning doesn't strike twice... This is not so...

Just after beginning my drive home, on a suburban street, warning light for power steering came on and within about 1/4 mile the power steering failed and the steering wheel seized up. I was fortunate to be just able to turn on onto a side street as i could no longer control the car. Car was a rental car and only had 37k miles on it.

Hev warning light came on when i started my car. I heard a sucking air sound at which time i turned off the car. I then restarted and no warning lights were on. Later that day while driving home the warning light came back on. I pulled the codes and it showed P0105 and P0107. Dealer inspected and found the egr pipe(c) separated from flange causing unmetered air leak. Repairs took from 09/26/18-10/02/18

Car started this at approximately 10,000 miles. It "wanders" on the road, at highway speeds. The steering wheel feels like it "sticks" at speed in the center position and it takes considerable force to turn the wheel from center. This causes overcorrection in the steering and you tend to go back and forth. Single-handed cruising is definitely out of the equation, as it requires a two-handed tight grip for even tiny adjustments. My wife hates it and it is upsetting to happen in a new car. Did not do this when new and does it in all modes (normal, eco, sport).

On this past labor day, which was 9/3/2018, i pulled into a gas station to refuel my car. Shut off car and had key fob with me. Pumped the fuel and got back in the car. Nothing. Car was inoperable. Pressed the start button, pressed the brakes, shifted from drive to neutral and back, pressed the brake and the start button again and nothing. Dashboard lit up like a christmas tree with the key fob light on, the check engine light on, etc. Called bluelink. They transferred me to a "phone prompt" switchboard. Problem is the phone screen would not operate as it was frozen as well. Called again, lady stayed on the phone with me and transferred me. Then when transferred she was about to hang up with the message read they were closed. Wtf? I am supposed to have roadside assistance. Rep from bluelink told me to tow the car. There was nothing she could do as it was a holiday. Honestly, i was furious. I exited the car again and shut the door. Had the fob with me. Got back in and again, nothing. Could not even turn the steering wheel. Got out again and this time checked fuses, and turned switch off then on for all fuses. Nothing again. Repeated the steps as typed earlier, and nothing. About 20 minutes later i tried it again and it started. I have had my communications center replaced once already. Android auto worked when it felt like it. My sensors for blind spots turn off at will. My rear view camera works but the sensors don't always pick up oncoming cars or pedestrians. The car is going back tomorrow yet again. This time i am pushing for lemon law. The electrical system is critical to the functionality of the car. I love the mileage i get from this car and everything else is great, but i am not running the risk of driving on the interstate and the electronic system just decides to go on a vacation!

Hev warning light came on when i started the car in the morning. I heard some grinding and a belt slipping. Diagnosed as generator pulley grinding, alignment marks not aligned. It took from 08/31/18 till 09/07/18 for the repair to be completed.

Engine uses full synthetic oil at a rapid rate. One quart of full synthetic had to be added after driving only 3600 miles from previous oil change, and again at 4700, and even then the dipstick was still 1/2 quart below full when oil was changed at 4800 miles from previous oil change. Hyundai service technician could find no oil leaks.

Backed out of my carport and the streering went out. I wrestled hard to turn the steering wheel and could finally steer the car back into my carport. This was the second time it happened. The first time the dealer could not repeat the problem, so i had to keep driving the car. The second time they fixed it by removing bad steering column, shaft, and totque sensor and installing those new parts. Paperwork says torque sensor is defective. It had internal electrical open circuit. I was moving very slowly, backing out of carport onto a street that does not have any through traffic and just runs in front of our villa's where we pull into our carports. I have read online where it has happened to other people and they had to keep driving the car and that is just too dangerous, just because they could not get it to do it for the dealer.

Issue: cruise control speeds up too much going uphill, and slows down too much going downhill. Description: i set my cruise control to 75mph, the car will go over 77mph when going uphill, and slows down below 73mph when going downhill without any driver input. This doesn't occur on other gasoline only hyundai i drove such as santa fe. It only happens on my sonata hybrid. I guess hyundai may need to look into how the electric motor works with cruise control. *tr

I tapped a car in front of me going less than 5 mph, not even a scratch on either car, but the steering wheel & the driver airbag deployed, causing cuts, bruises, & scrapes. The officer, the emt, as well as the other driver have no idea why they would go off in such a slow, light tap. The damage to me, as well as the inconvenience is disturbing.

After driving my newly purchased 2017 hyundai sonata, for any length of time or mileage, the power steering will make a clunk sound and then will stop working when slowing down and reaching a speed of around 10mph and then when i regain speed i am still struggling to turn the wheel because i've lost the power steering. I did discover that once the ignition is turned off and restarted that the power steering works again. However, when driving on a freeway or road, pulling over to restart the vehicle is not always an option and with the steering wheel so hard to control, the potential for accident avoidance is lowered. And winter weather conditions will make driving with this manual steering situation that much more dangerous. It seems the hyundai elantra is having the same issue and a recall has already been issued.

I was driving on the interstate when i heard a long noise that sounded like a gunshot. I then heard a noise coming from the area of the sunroof like broken glass. I had the cover closed. Had i not had it closed, glass would have been falling in all around us. I pulled over to look at it and it looked a bomb had exploded. Some pieces were still attached but shattered and others were everywhere.

I was informed by an auto mechanic that hybrid vehicles involved in a collision could explode when the car door is opened. Have you heard anything about this? Could it be true? [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.S.C. 552(b)(6).' *pm
