  Kia america, inc. (kia) is recalling certain 2010-2019 borrego, 2014-2016 cadenza, 2010-2013 forte, forte koup, sportage, 2015-2018 k900, 2011-2015 optima, 2011-2013 optima hybrid, soul, 2012-2017 rio, 2011-2014 sorento, and 2010-2011 rondo vehicles. The hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) may experience an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the hecu fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed november 14, 2023. The first owner notification letters were mailed march 29, 2024. • Recall 130110 [USA]: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

• Recall 139606 [USA]: If the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

• Recall 99921 [USA]: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. additionally, when the ignition is in the 'on' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of park without first applying the brake. this may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  Kia motors corporation (kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 rondo, model year 2007-2011 sedona, sorento and sportage, model year 2010-2011 soul, model year 2008-2011 optima, model year 2010 forte, model year 2007-2009 amanti, and model year 2009 borrego vehicles. Originally, in april 2013, kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 rondo and sportage, model year 2007-2011 sorento, model year 2007 sedona, model year 2010-2011 soul, and model year 2011 optima vehicles. In september 2013, kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the park position and cause the electronic stability control (esc) malfunction light to illuminate.

  Issue: on certain vehicles equipped with a 2.0 l nu gdi or 2.4 l theta ii mpi engine, an engine compartment fire could occur while driving. Kia is conducting this recall as a preventative measure to prevent fire risk due to potential fuel leaks, oil leaks and/or engine damage. In some situations, you may notice any of the following symptoms: there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine; the check engine light and/or the oil pressure warning light could turn on; you may smell fuel, burning or smoke; or you may notice oil leaks. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail and/or a fire could occur. An engine failure can cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: for the optima model, only the optima hybrid is affected by this recall. Safety risk: an engine compartment fire can create a risk of injury. A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.   On certain vehicles, when repairs were completed under recall campaign 2017-199 (kia rc109), the high pressure fuel pipe may not have been properly installed on the fuel pump outlet. A fuel leak could occur if the pipe was damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the recall repair. A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, could create the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will inspect the connections of the high pressure fuel pipe to the fuel pump outlet for leaking fuel. If leaking fuel is detected, the fuel pipe will be replaced with a new one.

  On certain vehicles equipped with 2.0l and 2.4l engines, the engine may contain residual metallic debris from factory machining operations. If debris is present, it could potentially restrict oil flow to the main bearings and rod bearings and could lead to premature wear. If the vehicle continues to be driven with worn bearings, the bearings could fail, which could cause an engine stall while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in loss of motive power which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Worn bearings could also result in the illumination of the oil pressure lamp in the instrument cluster. Correction: dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the engine sub-assembly.

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando.   Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373).   The office of defects investigation (odi) has received a petition on july 13, 2022, requesting a defect investigation into an alleged defect of the "oil drain pan assemblies" on the following 83 models/model year vehicles stated by the petitioner: 2006-2019 hyundai sonata, 2013-2018 hyundai santa fe sport, 2010-2012 and 2019-2020 hyundai santa fe, 2010-2015 and 2018-2019 hyundai tucson, 2011-2021 kia sportage 2005-2020 kia optima, 2011-2020 kia sorento, 2010-2013 kia forte, 2010-2013,kia forte coup, and 2007-2010 kia rondo vehicles equipped with the 1.6l t-gdi gamma, 2.4l theta ii gdi, 2.4l in-line gdi theta ii, kappa, and 3.8l v-shaped gdi lambda-ii engines. The petition also cites additional hyundai/kia vehicles that use similar drain pan assemblies as the above-mentioned vehicles as having drain pan assembly failures. The petitioner provided subject and peer vehicles information related to alleged engine failures. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745.According to the petition, the hyundai/kia vehicle owners have made allegations of oil leakage failures occurring at highway speeds, without malfunction, indicator lights, or the leakage associated with under-tightening an oil drain plug, or a plug or pan with damaged thread. • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

  In a letter dated june 11, 2018, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a safety defect investigation into non-collision related fires on model year (my) 2011-2014 kia optima and sorento, and hyundai sonata and santa fe vehicles.In a letter dated july 24, 2018, cas requested that my 2010-2015 kia soul vehicles be added to the petition.Cas stated that there is a higher number of complaints to nhtsa regarding non-crash fires on these vehicles compared to other similar vehicles.The office of defects investigation (odi) had already opened a recall query (rq17-003) on all kia vehicles equipped with theta ii engines for engine failures that may cause stalling and fires.The query covers most of the petition subject optima and sorento vehicles but not any of the subject soul vehicles.On august 21, 2018, odi opened a defect petition (dp18-003) to evaluate whether to grant or deny the cas petition.Odi sent information request letters to kia (september and october 2018) requesting information on all engine and non-engine related fires in the petition kia vehicles.Odi performed extensive analysis on the information obtained from kia.During the dp18-003 analysis, kia initiated three additional safety recalls related to engine compartment fires on certain petitioned and non-petitioned vehicles (nearly 500,000 total vehicles: recalls 18v-907, 19v-101, and 19v-120).Based on odi’s review of the applicable materials, including responses to information requests sent to multiple manufacturers, vehicle owner questionnaires (voq), and early warning data, nhtsa has decided to grant the petition.The petition is hereby granted.A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of alleged defects relating to non-collision vehicle fires in the 2011-2014 kia optima, 2011-2014 kia sorento, and 2010-2015 kia soul. • Scope and timeliness investigation # RQ17003

  On march 31, 2017, kia motors america (kia) filed a defect information report (dir) recalling 618,160 my 2011-2014 optima, my 2012-2014 sorento, and my 2011-2013 sportage vehicles with "theta ii" engines (recall no. 17v-224)."theta ii" engines are a family of engines used by both kia and hyundai motor america (hyundai). Kias dir described the defect as an issue involving manufacturing debris as well as a machining process causing an uneven surface roughness which could restrict oil flow within the engine. Previously, on september 10, 2015, hyundai filed a dir recalling certain vehicles containing engines from the shared "theta ii" engine family, describing the defect as an issue involving manufacturing debris. Kias march 31, 2017, dir stated that kia did not conduct a recall upon learning of hyundais september 2015 recall because kias "theta ii" engines were manufactured on a different production line and did not have the same manufacturing issue.This rq is being opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of kias "theta ii" engine recall, and kias compliance with reporting requirements.

The contact owns a 2011 kia optima. The contact stated that upon entering an interstate highway at 65 mph, the vehicle ceased with the battery and oil warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. As the vehicle shut-off, the contact was able to coast the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway. After the vehicle failed to start up after multiple attempts, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the recall for the failure had expired and referred her to a kia dealer for inspection. Upon investigation, the contact linked her failure to nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle remained in possession of the independent mechanic unrepaired. The failure mileage was 116,000.

Driving down highway car shut off won’t start back up

Unknown. I just checkes the vin # on this vehicle because i just bought it and saw that it has 4 recalls. But recently i have been smelling gasoline when i drive it long distances and sometimes when i am in town. It gets bad, even my kids complain about the smell. Im not sure if there is a problem but if so i would like for it to be corrected.

I was driving my car on a highway at traffic time when i noticed a small gas odor my brakes got really hard after that i pulled to the emergency lane and when i pull the handle to open my hood smoke and flames immediately came out, the car its trash now police took it to impound because of the fluids the car was leaking and safety issues.

On january 4th 2021 my car stopped while i was driving. I had it towed to the auto repair in my city and they informed me my engine had a recall on it. The auto shop then informs me they don't work on engines send it to a kia dealership ship i did that. Now the kia dealership tells me there was no recall didn't explain much say you just needed an battery and the front o2 sen-or replaced i paid the $450 the car was up and running i didn't think nothing else would go wrong. March 19 2021 my car stops again while driving get it towed to the repair in my city they say i have a bad engine that was all the help they could give me. Now may 3 2021 my car is currently down it's not in the auto shop at the moment because the only thing the auto repair shops was saying is this would cost me $4500.In january i was informed i had a recall on my engine.
