• Recall 101510 [USA]: The vehicle may enter a fail-safe/limp-home mode that limits the drivability of the vehicle. the hybrid system could also shut down completely resulting in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Toyota is recalling certain model year 2010 through 2014 prius vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the intelligent power module (ipm) inside the inverter module (a component of the hybrid system) contains transistors that may become damaged from high operating temperatures. If this occurs, various warning lamps will be illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle will have reduced power allowing it to only drive a short distance.

  On certain vehicles, a defect in the curtain shield airbags could cause the inflator to fail, releasing pressurized gas into the airbag, partially inflating it. If this occurs, parts of the inflator could also separate from the vehicle structure, entering the interior of the vehicle. Should this occur when occupants are in the vehicle, unintended airbag deployment could startle the driver, and airbag inflator parts could come into contact with the occupants, increasing the risk of injury and a crash. Correction: dealers will install a retention bracket which will prevent the inflator parts from entering the vehicle interior.

In the letter, the petitioner reported experiencing an unexpected and complete loss of brake power while driving, accompanied by multiple dashboard warning lights. This petition is based on the petitioners direct experience and assessment that odi closed dp19-004 because its prompting petition was withdrawn by that petitioner. • Pedestrian alert sounds investigation as of 20230127

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

• Brake actuator valve wear investigation as of 20190930

  On september 19, 2019, the office of defects investigation (odi) received a defect petition from mr. Roger hogan requesting that the agency investigate and recall certain toyota prius, prius phv, camry hybrid and avalon hybrid vehicles for a brake actuator valve wear condition covered under toyota customer support programs zjb and zkk (subject csp’s). In support of his request, the petitioner identified 117 nhtsa complaints allegedly related to the subject csp condition, including 60 reporting crashes. On september 30, 2019, odi opened defect petition dp19-004 to evaluate the petitioner’s request for an investigation. In august 2020, the petitioner notified the agency that he was withdrawing his petition. Because the petitioner has withdrawn the petition, we are denying the petition as moot and no further analysis of this petition is necessary.Nhtsa is authorized to issue an order requiring notification and remedy of a defect if the agency’s investigation shows a defect in the design, construction, or performance of a motor vehicle that presents an unreasonable risk to safety. 49 u.S.C. §§ 30102(a)(9), 30118. Because the petitioner has with withdrawn the petition, the petition is denied as moot. This action does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. There were three driving instances where, when applying the brakes, my brake foot went completely to the floor. Twice i was on the city street and once in a parking space. My speed at the time was slow but the brake peddle going to the floor did not stop it. No turn was involved it did stop eventually but the car was carried much further than expected with no braking control. The only collision was when the front end hit a log in my home parking area. The car was towed to the dealer's service dept., but after 4 hours, i was told, "could not duplicate concern customer will have to return when fault is current". They drove it and used their computer but nothing faulty was evident. I was sent off in the car. With an intermittent failure, it wasn't likely. So, now i have a car i don''t dare to drive and won't sell because it's a hazard!

A check hybrid system alert came on and included lit break, check engine, steering, abs, skid and yellow triangle with an ! Mark inside. The car stopped and i could not move it. Good thing i was on a side street with light traffic. This happened again after the inverter was replace; and it happened again after the 12 v battery was replaced.

Needless to say this was a catastrophic failure of the entire brake system on a car that has a customer support program notification from toyota[zjb] that was sent to me with a warning of such occurrence. This is down right irresponsible to a major car manufacturer to allow these vehicles on the road without testing the entire system on each of these affected vehicles and with for a catastrophic failure to occur and cause public harm or even death. I had just taken the vehicle for service a few weeks prior where i explained the service advisor of an issue with brake pulsation. However, the entire brake system was not throughly checked and was just told that its the front rotors that are uneven, thank god i did not fully loose control of the vehicle and cause a catastrophic accident as it would have resulted in bodily harm to my family. I expect this federal government agency to use it's authority to prevent such occurrence to the tax paying citizens of this nation.

Had the traction, abs, and brake lights all pop on. Braking feels a little different now. C1391 code was given by mechanic. He is talking about brake parts that will cost parts and labor around $2500. I can't afford this and i need a car to drive, so hoping no wrecks. We are a toyota family with 4 now in the family. Around 100,000 miles the brake system has been sluggish and it appears the abs system is failing. Currently the car has 118,617 miles and constantly exhibits sluggish and spongy braking. Hitting a pot hole or any type of bump while pressing the brakes can cause the abs to light up temporarily and the brakes feel as if they release for 1 second and re-engage. When pressing the brakes there is a popping/air-like sound in the brake system constantly. Bleeding the brakes did not solve this issue. Through research i have discovered this is a complaint of many prius owners about their brake actuator. It is a $1700+ part that, if fails, will cause the entire brake system to fail.

My car spontaneously started showing the abs system warning light, the "brake" light, and the electronic stability control indicator light without warning while parked. As soon as this happened and i put it in motion, the car began responding poorly to braking, with increased pressure and lack of responsiveness. Additionally, the car is receiving barely any battery charge from the brakes (a small amount compared to the normally full charge), and a whirring noise can be heard about every 3 seconds ( the same whirring noise that occurs when the car is starting up, which i think may be related to the battery). This issue happened while the car was at rest, and affects the car while in motion and at rest. The car feels unsafe to drive due to unpredictability with the brakes and their effectiveness. I believe this issue may be associated with the brake actuator.

Warning lights for traction control, brake, ave all appeared, and then braking dramatically changed. Almost like not having power brakes. Lights went off and normal brake finction returned. The warning indicator lights go on and off, at random. Code C1391 shows when scanned. This is same symptom as exhibited by 2010 model year priuses covered by recall. Problem has occurred at low 5-25 mph and highway speeds (55-70 mph) this is very dangerous as if this happens at high speed (highway) and the problem occurs there is a sudden change in braking quality an accident may result. I was making a left turn at a very busy los angeles intersection and during needed acceleration to turn, the prius lost power for a full second and then power came back slowly and i barely made it through the intersection, a t bone collision was imminent, and i missed getting hit by inches. All the warning lights on the dash illuminated and i was frazzled. The hybrid battery was 2/3 rds full at the time. There have been other instances where the car lost power for brief moments when the hybrid battery was low and didnt think anything of it at the time. The mpg has remained below 40 and after hybrid failure, around 26. Also, i had a gen 2 prius and the catalytic converter went bad around 150,000. California punishes consumers by not allowing after market cats and forces them to buy oem at an extreme mark up. Without a proper cat, you cant have cal smog approval, no approval, no registration. Total waste of resource when the actual cost of replacement of the cat is around $2k at the dealer. If i lived in az, after market is $475. At that point a car of that age and milage is worth around $2-3k. Battery and cat replacement costs should not eclipse the value of the car. Still doesn't mention the rest of the mechanical and saftey apparatus . If an engine works half time on a hybrid, why does the cat burn out so soooon? The scam is baked into the vehicle and our govt supports it. Fix carb!

Car stalled pulling into traffic. Took about 15 sec to restart. No diagnostic lights lit up on dash. Car lost power last month and engine light went on and engine could not be restarted.Had to be towed to dealership. It replaced valve assembly for vacuum and reprogrammed pcm. However, that issue was preceded by a creep of diagnostic lights (course of 1 hour), from check oil to check engine, and then it completely shut down.

My 2011 prius very recently has started making audibly noise while pressing the brake pedal, whether in motion or stopped. This noise contains continuous whirring, whining and loud clicking noise. We were on freeway when an odd smell was detected. There were several large trucks in the area and we passed off the smell to the trucks. A couple of miles later the passenger said, "the floor is on fire!" at this point, an abundance of smoke appeared above the dashboard on the passenger's side. We exited the freeway, found a fire extinguisher and were able to put out the fire. The local toyota dealer was informed but no action was taken. The insurance company has totaled the vehicle. We are awaiting the settlement check. We have no idea what started the fire. There were no indicators i.E. Warning lights/buzzers, etc. Prior to the fire. The area under the dashboard on the passenger's side is a charred mass. Therein a large hole at the top of the dash near where the speaker for that side is housed. *bf*jb

I am unsure whether it is referred to as brakes slipping but it is exactly the same thing that i've read happening to many people. It doesn't make any sense, people have said that the actuator was the part that needed replacing, yet it is a $3-4k part and should not be left up to the consumer. All of the brake lights on my dash lit up, brakes weren't working well, took it to the repair shop and was told it was my brake actuator.

The car starts as normal and drives normally but once you start to come to a stop the car shuts off and will only restart when you depress the gas pedal but shuts down again when you release the gas pedal, normal city streets and highway

When breaking and still moving, the car will accelerate momentarily resulting in going faster for a second or two. This happened randomly over the years and may in some instances be related to hitting an irregularity in the road, but i cannot be sure. It has not caused an accident, but is strong enough that it could. I'm a pretty safe driver so tend not to ride on the tail of the car in front of me. I have not kept track of when it happens.

A few months ago i had the required software update to adjust the safety feature in the hybrid system in case of a failure. While driving on a side street on 3/1/19 i pressed the gas after being stopped, the car jerked, and the check hybrid system light came on. This was on railroad tracks but the car did drive on the gas engine a short distance to make it over the railroad tracks. I had the car towed to a toyota dealer who stated the inverter was bad, but that toyota would replace it as they extended the warranty. This seems to be an issue that toyota is ignoring. I also own a 2014 toyota prius v which is also prone to this issue. Toyota should address this issue beyond a mere software update.

I'm constantly hearing a barking/ purging noise coming from the brake accumulator pump whenever i do hard braking. Whenever i hit potholes or rough roads, the car would still rolls during braking as if the abs is getting triggered. I was quoted by toyota dealer of an estimate of $3000 to replace the brake accumulator pump and booster. I'm afraid that the brakes would fail while driving.

Toyota had a customer support program zjb for default brake booster/master cylinders on the 2010 prius models. I have a 2011 prius that has been diagnosed with the same problem and there is no customer support offered. This warranty enhancement on the 2010 models is good thru 11/30/19 regardless of mileage. Even though my vehicle has the exact problem there is no recognition for support due to the year of this vehicle. I was not aware i even had a problem until i took it to the dealer for a software recall update. We were experiencing heavy rain and my indicator lights came on which is why they checked this and confirmed the issue although my brakes are working fine. I am not understanding why toyota is not honoring the fix for the default or why after discovering this issue in 2010 the 2011 would not be considered. I would appreciate some help in this matter.

Went in to have the spark plugs and 2 coils(cylinders 1 & 2) started shaking, knocking and smoking at the time i picked it up. Check engine light is on and hasn't gone off. The mechanic i take the vehicle to says it is a problem with this model car, trying to determine this, since he stated it is now my head gasket that needs replacing.

The car stop working all the dash lights stop working ,the brakes start getting harder and the don't stop at all and beeping without stop that noise and the hibryd system stop working after i living for some recalls repairs and the want me to fix the car to pay and i know is not my fault everything is because is this car is all electronic system.Never on my live i have this problem with my other cars.Only with this one and now they one me to pay for something the company makes wrong.This is not fair at all.Before i was recomended this car but right now people ask me and i have to talk negative situation about it.

Although toyota issued a recall notice in october of 2018 for our 2011 prius, the affected part was not available and the letter stated we would be notified when the repair could be made. On feb. 5 our check hybrid system warning came on and the car was difficult to drive with diminished acceleration/power--certainly a safety issue in our area's heavy traffic. The auto nation toyota ft myers, fl dealership said the car should be driven in to the service dept. (but told my husband once it was there, it was no longer safe to operate) and it would be checked and then "graciously" said the inverter system would be replaced at no cost (approx. $3800) to us as toyota opted to "extend the warranty". This should have been replaced in october when initially notified and before it failed and became a safety issue and before we were told to "drive it to the dealership". I am very disappointed in toyota and i worry about other prius drivers still on the road.

Air bags failed to deploy after being rear ended straight on at 55 mph, not a single airbag deployed.

The following is a summary of how i became aware of the power booster and master cylinder problem with my 2011 toyota prius. 'upon discovery of multiple lights displayed on dashboard such as brake, abs system & traction lights, during driving the braking performance has changed drastically & the car no longer performs braking function adequately. Unable to rely on safe braking due to brake resistance felt with stiffening in which pedal depresses deeply & more time is required to come to a full stop. When braking the hybrid battery does not charge & runs dangerously low resulting in damage to the hybrid battery which can lead to substantial cost to replace the battery. 'car brought to firestone for diagnostics. Upon further inspection by their technician it was determined that the power brake booster/master cylinder was damaged & malfunctioning and was in need of replacement. Informed repair would be in excess of $1,500.00. See enclosed supportive documentation from firestone diagnostics.

The attraction brake and abs lights come on, the brake become spongey and fail to stop the vehicle , i almost had an accident while this happens while i was driving the vehicle

My car was parked on the street,i got into it, turned it on, shifted to driving and started proceeding forward. I then noticed 3 lights (the abs light, brake light, and traction control light) suddenly appeared on the dashboard. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred prior to the light coming on, it just suddenly appeared. The error code in the computer system read C1391. The details read there was "abnormal leak in accumulator". The car no longer drives safely. If the brakes are pressed suddenly the car skids instead of slowing down. In order for the car to come to a complete stop a lot more pressure has to be applied to the brake compared to before abs problem. The stopping distance has increased by approximately twice its length. The car is no longer capable of sharp turns, the back end of the car skids dangerously left or right while turning, depending on the direction the driver is turning. The braking, handling and control of the car decreases so much when the roads are wet that at times the car skids even when going at a cautious speed in rain. For my safety and for others i drive in "b" instead of "d" when it rains.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Brake booster and actuator failed and error code C1391. Vehicle is unsafe to drive and toyota knows this problem because of the number of cases involved with this issue. The year prior saw a massive recall of 87,000 vehicles with the same issue. The same issue has carried over and toyota refuses to be held responsible for this issue.

Brake actuator has gone out giving a code of C1391. I have had the car less than a year and the brakes are now grabby and not functioning properly. This is a known problem with the gen 2 prius (my previous car) and was covered under an extended warranty. Apparently the gen 3 prius has the same issue and toyota has extended the warranty of the 2010 prius to the manufacturing date of 11/2010. My prius was manufactured in 12/2010 and i was just notified it would be $4000 to fix the issue that is a known manufacturing defect. Apparently toyota didn't fix the problem the first time and it's a direct safety issue when the brakes don't work as intended.

While driving down the highway or interstate, my traction warning light, the brake light, and the abs warning light all came on, and the brakes became hard to press. When letting off the brake, there was an airy, suction sound. After a while, while driving, all of the warning lights went off, and the brake pressure normalized. There is still an airy sound when i use the brake pedal, though, which always seems to be there, even when the warning lights are off. This has happened about 4 times within the past six months. I had a diagnostic test run, and it gave code #1391, leakage in accumulator abnormal, which pointed to an internal leak in the brake booster/master cylinder assembly. I noticed that toyota has issued recalls for this same problem in 2010 and prior prius models, but mine does not qualify because it is a 2011. Since this issue has not been resolved and appears to be a defect in toyota's brake booster assembly, i would like to see this recall extended to cover models beyond 2010.

I was on driving on the freeway when suddenly traction control light was on and brakes seemed to have locked. The conditions of the road were dry and i was driving the speed limit. This occured on a few different occasions. One day brake light, abs and traction light all appeared. Took it into toyota dealership and was informed it was brake booster.

Engine developed an oil leak around 120,000 miles. Dealer ran an oil leak test ($700)and performed something else for $300 dollars. Nothing work. Dealer says the fix is to buy a new short block for $6,700. I will not. I'm adding oil myself to car about once every 10 days

Abs lights on ,tracks warning lights on and vsc lights on .Its a serious problem. Toyota should fix it . Toyota should own its problem

On december 8th, 2018, i was driving eastbound on interstate 10 in phoenix, az at approximately milepost 141 around 5:45 pm. Suddenly, i heard a large, *bang* which sounded like a gunshot. I immediately checked myself for injuries and felt the car to determine if a tire was blown. I was intact, and the tires seemed ok as well, but i heard the noise of air escaping from the vehicle. After turning south on i-17, i exited on the first street, exit 199, jefferson st. I turned left and looked for a safe place to pull over. It isn't a good neighborhood, so i slowed down and continued to look around the vehicle as i tried to find the place where the air was escaping. Finally, i cracked open the sliding door at the top of my sunroof, and i noticed shards of glass. I immediately closed it and was relieved it had not been open when this incident happened. I decided i must get home immediately, proceeded back to the freeway, and drove home. When i arrived, i noticed the sunroof was shattered - one main horizontal shatter at the center and two more vertical shatters at each end. I checked the interior of the vehicle for a projectile and found nothing. After researching further, it was clear that the glass had broken simply due to poor design. I immediately filed a claim with my insurance company, farmers. The claim number is 910380. I have also contacted toyota to get a response, but i have not heard back. I am fortunate that the sunroof was not exposed. There is a paper-thin sliding door that blocks the sun. Even though the sun had set, i had left it closed, and it protected me from the shards of glass. This is clearly a defect that toyota needs to address. It is december in arizona, and the temperature was 69 degrees when i left to return home yesterday. It's not a heat issue. It's likely a glass defect. I look forward to obtaining more information.

While driving my 2011 prius intermittently changes from drive to neutral. The car continues to roll but slows down. A warning comes up on the screen that the car is in neutral. I can pop the gearshift into drive and it seems fine, and may or may not behave the same way again. This has occurred on the freeway as well as on city streets. There does not seem to be any correlation to acceleration or deceleration or to movement (turns or changing lanes). I have taken it to the dealer who states that the systems check out fine and they were not able to duplicate the problem. (it is intermittent and i am not able to duplicate it either.) i never had this problem until after i had my car thoroughly steam cleaned. It has been suggested to me by another prius owner that it might be a switch. But, again, the dealer says the systems check out fine.

As i was driving down the freeway my car filled with smoke and i realized my engine had caught fire, i was able to get out, the whole front of my car was engulfed in flames in no time

4 lights came on my dashboard: brakes, abs, etc. So i took the car to the dealership. They said i need a new brake accumulator but it isn't covered and is a $3500 repair. I see that the 2010 prius was recalled for this same part but they won't cover mine.

The following dashboard lights came on on our vehicle at the same time:traction mode, emergency brake, abs, and brake system warning light. Since the lights have came on, i have noticed that i have to press down further down on the brake to stop the vehicle. My stopping distance is further now as well.

Takata recall my 16 year old daughter has this car with a major safety recall and no apparent fix! Not happy and not feeling safe with her driving it now. It has stalled out once so far on a backroad.

My car only had 120k miles and the break boostor and actuator breaks down while we were on the road. My wife drives the car with my 3-childrens. She was almost hit the other car on highway because the breaks system stops working at normal mode. The dash board shows all kinds of break, traction control, and abs lights . This is a life threatning issue and toyot needs to replace this part with no charge becasue it has a manufacturing defects and thousands of prius owner has the same issu.

Brake accentuator failed - no warning and traction control/brake light/abs warning lights all illuminated. Hard breaking test @25 mph confirms abs not working (i.E. Tires skid) and breaking distance adversely impacted for normal braking. Hybrid system charging from braking is diminished.

Starting from a stop after engine shut-down, the car felt like it was going over rumble strips. This got worse over time until i realized that it was actually an engine mis-fire. The dealer traced the root cause to a leaking cylinder head gasket that is a common failure on high mileage 3rd generation prius cars. $4,000 repair. First car i've ever owned that cylinder head gaskets are routine maintenance items. Clear design issue. If you keep this car long enough, you will be buying a head gasket repair.

Got in car one morning and all the brake / traction control system related lights are on. Turned car off, waited 10 minutes restarted car and lights are still on. Tested brake function in yard, reduced but still able to get car stopped. Took it to shop and read codes, came back as the actuator which is already recalled on previous year model pruis', obviously they did not fix the issue on the early gen 3 models (2010 & 2011). I have found multiple other people with gen-3's that have had the same issue os these should be included in the gen-2 recall because they are having the same issue. With it being a dealer only part at $4500-$5000 (parts and labor) to fix on a car that's only worth about $10,000 i wonder if it's really worth fixing. At this point the car is parked because with the diminished braking performance i don't feel safe driving it.

In motion while accelerating past a slower car. Heard and felt a pronounced thump and lost engine power on busy local thoroughfare. Moved to a turn lane and stopped. Multiple dashboard lights and "check hybrid system" on led display. Power off car, and back on twice and got the same error on display. Found that car could move on ev power and i got it into a safer location at an adjacent parking lot. Had vehicle towed to repair facility. As a driver this was disconcerting as i could not clearly determine if the car was at all driveable. If a driver were to stop immediately in the same situation they would be on the roadway. If i had not pressed on the accelerator pedal after powering on the car again i would not have known i could move the car to a safer location. Display should read "hybrid system failure" then "limited ev power available" then "move to safe area if necessary" cause: hybrid inverter failure. Repaired by toyota under 2014 eoe and new 10/2018 recall j0a

While driving on the highway all the break lights came on and stayed on brake, abs and skid lights on also noise under hood by brake master cylinder. Took it in to the dealership and they verified abs / brake lights on). Told me i needed to replace brake actuator / brake booster pump / bleed / and re-flash system . Found out this also has been happening on the 2009 and the 2010 toyota prius hybrid and they have a recall out on this. I was told at the dealership that it was unsafe to drive the vehicle with this occurring

Toyota after 2 months has not resolved this issue/recall. Since that i have to stop to share my car on turo and i'll have a lost of income. I'm asking for a compensation

The traction control, abs light and warning light all came which i believe all to be a safety issue

After heavy rains, water gets into the spare tire storage well, causing a short in the tpms monitor for the spare tire. All tires have appropriate air pressure but the tell-tale shows until the spare tire storage area dries out - several days. This is a new phenomenon but there are no tears or dings in the gasket around the hatchback. Not sure where the water gets in.

The brakes temporarily disengaged sometimes when braking. At around 100,000 miles, the brake accumulator would constantly make noises while driving and after shutting the car off. Eventually the brake accumulator and brake booster failed completely at 117,000 miles, costing around $4,000 to repair.

The problem my car experienced happened while the vehicle was in motion on i-110 in pensacola, florida and presented itself abruptly (through the car's warning indicators at least) on friday, august 31st headed to pensacola beach for labor day weekend from our home in baton rouge, louisiana. All the car's brake warning lights came on simultaneously and without warning, the master brake light, the abs light, five different lights in all. I pulled off the interstate, went to an autozone store, checked the brake fluid level and brake pads (all looked nominal) and got the car's computer checked for warning codes (none came up). Seeing nothing catastrophic, but being unsure of whether our car was really safe to drive even though the brakes still felt functional (if a bit off), we got the car back to baton rouge and brought it to the local toyota dealership's (all-star toyota, on airline highway) service department. We had noticed for some weeks prior increasingly frequent buzzing sounds ' anyone with a prius knows these, such as when you turn the car off ' made by (i'm told) the car's brake actuator pressurizing the brake fluid. This escalating frequency of the noise, and a certain constant 'pulsing' of the sound when the brake was slightly applied, but not pushed down to the floor ' i now understand to be symptomatic of a failing brake actuator. Following some research, i discovered in 2013 toyota issued a recall for thousands of 2010 prius and other toyota automobiles for a problem with brake actuators; also, in 2016, a warranty extension and part replacement was offered to hundreds of thousands of 2004 through 2009 toyota prius vehicles for problems with brake actuators. In that more recent matter, owners were offered a warranty extension to 10 years after first use of the car or 150,000 miles, or unlimited mileage or age up to the end of 2017.

Unknown cause. The breaks temporarily disengage (for anywhere between 1-3 seconds) when the car encounters a small bump or pot-hole in the road, while breaking downhill. Usually happens when breaking hard on a declined freeway off-ramp. This has almost caused me to rear-end another vehicle on multiple occasions.

The abs/brake/skid/warning triangle on. My 2011 prius iii is 121k mile. This went on/off for a few days then it was on the whole time. The brake seems to loose the hydraulic power brake. I feel like the brakes feel weird whenever hit small bump, brake just failed for a second. I went to toyota dealership they said it's the actuator that need to be replaced and it's expensive $2-3k. They said it need to be fix soon because brake might fail at any time. There seems to be a warranty enhancement for the 2010 and older but not 2011 and newer. Seems like toyota still have the same issue with newer model, not fixed yet. Please bring this issue up for safety reason.

Horn does not work when wheels are straight. Horn works when wheels are turned completely left only. I believe it is the spiral cable assembly. Toyota wants $1,093.00 to repair this problem. Other toyota vehicles have placed a recall on this issue. This issue should be recalled on this vehicle. Have researched this safety problem on other prius vehicles and many others have had the same horn problems. My prius 2011 hybrid burning low beam headlight every one or two month. It is hard because no one have solution for this issue. The problem is not just changing the headlight every one or two months but the problem is safety, on highway once the light goes down. It happened to me! It was unbelievable.

The brakes are pumping slow speeds and the vehicle makes much more noise. The car makes buzzing sound every 30 seconds or sooner. A repair person said it is the abs actuator that is about to fail.

While driving on the highway, without warning, i lost power assisted breaking ability - accompanied by a number of dashboard warning lights. I was able to safely stop the vehicle using manual breaking. I had the code checked and have learned that the (code 1391) brake accumulator failure is a common issue in the prius and has been subject to a recall/replacement for the years prior to my make (i believe 2008-2010). Clearly this is still an issue and the sudden/no-warning failure of the system causes an alarming and potentially dangerous loss of breaking control during high speed driving. Luckily, i was not using the breaks at the time of the failure and was able to determine that the manual break pads were serviceable but i needed to rapidly increase the pressure on my breaks to slow down sufficiently to avoid an accident.

Was driving on the on the surface street about to get on the freeway and the vehicle would not accelerate the hybrid system light came on.

June 29th 2018 was in the car wash going thorugh when the dash board panel said traction battery low put in park the battery indicator showed one bar light on but i couldnt put it in park for i was still going thorgh car wash when it was done washing put car in drive and it was very slow in driving it took it awhile to come back up in power july 6th took it to local dealer and i think they thought i was nuts they said they never heard of such of a thing happing like that. Thought matbe it was the new battery they put in my car in march of 20018 so i want this on record that i had it checked even called and checked on line if there was a trecall only thing i found was a 2014 recall on my year but not my vion of the electrical system software. Is it possable that is what happened to my car. Hope you can give me a answer

Horn stopped working. Only works when steering wheel is turned left or right. Forums have posted that it could be the spiral cable from other vehicle owners. This replacement is over $1,000.

On uneven road surfaces (washboard road, many small potholes, gravel roads, rough road shoulders) brakes would give out if braking hard. If felt like once abs kicked in the brakes would get almost completely released. The car would brake just fine on flat surfaces, wet or dry. I have multiple vehicles and know how abs brakes work but thought the prius brakes were just a bit more sensitive and i have to watch my distances more carefully and avoid hard stops. Then on april 23, 2018 the car started to make some strange noise but no dashboard lights came on. I continued driving and noticed the brakes were working only intermittently. After i almost crashed when attempting to break in traffic i limped back home and took the car to the dealership. The repairs to replace brake pump and cylinder assemblies cost $4,193.31 but the car was driveable again. However, i noticed that the repairs also corrected the abs problem that was present since the car was new. I think anyone who drives a 2011+ prius should get their brakes checked for emergency braking where brakes stop working thus allowing the car plow ahead even if the brake pedal is down to the floor.

Both low beam bulbs not working, but high beams work. Bulbs not bad. Happened while driving on highway.

Low beam headlights are burning out within a week of installation. When bulbs are replaced, one of the two bulbs will burn out within a week, yet the other bulb will stay active. Both sides are affected. It randomly chooses which side to burn out.

I was driving at about 35 mph and all of a sudden my brakes stopped working. The brake , abs and traction lights came on all at once. I somehow made it home but i could have easily crashed. I had my 9 year old in the back seat and he also got very scared. Now i cannot drive my car and the brakes feel as they as stuck and very hard. I took my car to a reputable mechanic and he told me it is giving him code C1391. This is the same problem that the 2010 prius had under the recall. My prius is 2011 and not under the recall. I feel that the 2011 should be under recall because many thousands of lives are in danger now.

I was at an automatic car wash yesterday and after the wash finished i pulled out of stall with hardly any brakes.I was not able to pump them and had to take my car into a mechanic the brake actuator was out and the car is undrivable.The price for the part alone is over 2500.00 i was informed by the dealership that is was a recalled item but not for the yr of my car. If this would have happened in traffic or at a high rate of speed i know i would have been in a serious accident and i could have killed someone.

When i go over a bump or pothole and put on the brakes the car accelerates. Toyota claims it is just how the abs brakes feel, but the car actually speeds up when i brake. Happened multiple times since i bought the car. So far no accidents.

Dash board keeps beeping, yet i have replaced the key battery 3 times and now dealer says key not detected, yet car runs so the key is detected but the beeping will not stop. Took to dealer paid 89.99 for diagnostic per dealer. Dealer now says the left harness needs replaced for $1802 plus tax. I feel manufacturer should allow consumers who bought there product be given information about history of faulty electrical wires even when it is not a safety hazard. My toyota prius warning lights brake,abs and traction control came on. I check with the dealer and it said my accumulator was leaking. This part alone is $2600 plus $500 in labor. My cat has 41,900 miles on it. This part is an obvious problem because the 09-10 models had a recall for this exact problem. Amazing that the same part excise in newer models but no recall. Especially because it's the most expensive part other then the hybrid battery. I was driving my car when ththe lights came on and my brakes released when depressed and i almost hit the car waiting at a stop light. My kids drive this car often because i thought it was safe and inexpensive for gas. Perfect for a kid with not a lot of income. But, now they can't because of the risk and the pricey repair. If you look at forums this is a worldwide common problem and toyota needs to fix it. Not just a recall for two years of the vehicle. If i had the money, i would take them to court. I'm just a little man thou. This is a major safety issue that toyota has obviously gotten away with. When the headlights are turned on during the day (i.E. When it is raining), the lighted panel on the console fades to unreadable. Since the speed is indicated on the console, we cannot monitor our speed during these times. This is particularly dangerous when we are highway driving. My toyota service dealer did not fix this problem when we took the car in for repairing this problem, nor did they respond to three surveys they and toyota sent to me in which i outlined the problem.

While in motion when i pressed the brakes the pedal went to the floor. Brakes failed. Rapid beeping with brake light on. I pushed on the brakes and there was nothing. This is the second complaint for the same vehicle and the same complaint. The first occurred 11/11/2016. I was making a right hand turn into a parking spot in the same parking lot. As i turned into the spot and released my foot from the accelerator my car accelerated. This time i was able to stop the vehicle before striking another car or the handicapped ramp.

Three weeks ago the brakes failed at a stop light on a city street and the abs and brake lights came on in the dash. The brake fluid appeared to be low so we opened a new bottle of fluid and filled the reservoir which seemed to temporarily remedy problem and nothing could be diagnosed because no lights were on in dash. The exact same thing happened again with the brakes failing and the dash lights coming on while at a red light on a city street. We had to have vehicle towed and were told it was the master cylinder assembly, booster pump etc. And wasn't covered under warranty at $6400. The car has 82,925 miles and has been maintained.

Both headlights won't turn on. However, when i press and hold the lever for bright lights, the lights work on the "brights" setting. Lights don't work when i'm driving.

Car had recall for curtain shield airbags. Took automobile to dealer to perform corrective action for recall. Dealer states they will not perform repair at all, as there is an after market sunroof installed. Dealer that originally sold car installed sunroof prior to my purchasing the car new. They will not assist in finding a solution. Toyota customer care said they would not help and that they are not obligated to help as sunroof is after market. Customer service states that they are not obligated to perform recall repairs.

Due to faulty headlight wiring and assembly, headlights will burn out regularly or be too dim for safe use. Both headlights will go out without warning, while in use, at night. This is a significant safety issue and is a documented/known issue with toyota. This is not a mild annoyance and should be recalled.

The headlights keep burning out, i have replaced the drivers side 3 times in 12 months and the passenger side twice. I only use sylvania brand, but have switched to different brightness to see if it has any impact, it has a slight impact but not much. The headlights are not on when not needed.

Pulled into a parking spot at night, parked, turned the lights off, shut car off, returned to the car, started it and both low beams would not come on. High beams work fine. Not a fuse issue because horn works. Turning the light switch on the stalk turns on the dash indicator light but not the low beams or the parking lights.

I replaced both headlights several times at a much faster time period than any other vehicle i have ever owned. Once i even had to replace the headlamp assembly when one of the headlights generated so much heat that the headlamp assembly plastic melted.

At approximately 120,000 miles we started receiving messages from our dealership that the car was starting to use oil even though we have performed all required maintenance and on time. Then between 130,000 and 140,000 we starting getting an oil light that would come on during cornering. We were told to keep a gallon of oil with us and fill it between changes and we did. It would use about 1 to 2 quarts between changes. Then at 150,000 the engine blew up. It was within the time limits of the warranty but not the mileage so toyota would not help us out on a new motor. After that i researched on line and others are having similar problems. Most if not all our miles were highway cruising miles so easy miles. We drove this thing like a baby. We have owned many other vehicles to well over 250,000 so this is not a case of we don't take care of our vehicles. The motor right before it blew was making a loud screeching noise but no lights on the dash to indicate that anything was wrong. *tr

On november 4, during a routine maintenance appointment, it was discovered that our prius is completely invaded with mice, from where the wind sheild meets the dashboard, all the way through the entire car - between the visible interior and the metal frame - to the rear hatch door latch. We learned that toyota is well aware of this problem,​ due to how it is designed, which greatly allows for rodents to enter the car's cabin and trunk area via the heater box and cabin filter area. This is a particular health hazard....A significant one. To remedy the issue the service department ha​d​ to literally strip the entire interior of the car down to the metal, from windshield to trunk latch. Every thing ha​d​ to be taken out, several parts replaced (including the carpet which was damaged on the underside), or cleaned and reinstalled. This costs thousands of dollars and over a month of time. I have invoices and statements but do not know how to convey those to you, based on the instructions given.

I've had my prius from 4-14 to the present 2016. I keep having issues with the dealership i take it to for repairs. [xxx] in la crescenta ca. After mentioning and describing issues, the staff there says that unless the dash lights up with a message and gives a code, they cant fix it. So in order for them to look into it any further than me telling them dash light is nec. I've told them about the ac noise from the first say i took the car in to get services at 33k. They say they don't hear or see anything. My ac compressor sounds like its going to explode when ac is on. Brakes have been extremely diff. To explain because of terminology. They seem to lose their power when being pressed and abs seems to malfunction?? So they drive it and tell me its nothing i need to worry about and will be fixed when changed. Change brakes and the prob persists. Not only abs but firestone says my hardware has issues as well. I bring it to the attention of the staff and nothing seems to get done about it... My odo. Speedom is/was off +2 mph. My weather seals have been stripped and ripped off the vehicle which now causes water leaks from every crevice.. And the biggest two of all my complaints are 1- hybrid batt. Fan never worked and i wasn't told...Hyb batt has never worked properly (drains way too fast when stopped at a light or in traff) along with the heat created by the batt and the engine that fill up the cabin and will have the temp raised upwards of 90+ on a 75 deg day. 2- the ecu's ipm's (or something like that) has not been calib. Safety recall nhtsa # 16v487l has been out since june 28th and the recall notice from toyota (safety recall g0u) mentions the installation of retention brackets.Now 5 months have passed and there is still no installation going on to avoid this perosinal injury safety hazard. Even though no injuries/deaths have been reported so far, this causes a potential health hazard when the curtain shield airbags deploy. How can it be, that the nhtsa lets this slip for so long? Do we really need to wait until somebody gets injued or dies from this known safety issue?

Making right turn into a parking spot and the car accelerated striking a parked car to my right and my car was stopped by a cement handicap ramp. There was extensive front end damage to my car, as well as the front passenger door. The car on my had the right front bumper removed and the wrought iron railing on the ramp severely dented.

When i'm braking and slowing down gradually, as when approaching a red light, the brakes momentarily stop working and the car feels like it surges forward if it hits a low-traction surface like a pothole or manhole cover or wet spot. I saw there was a recall for this in 2010, but 2011 model consistently does it and has caused me and my friend to nearly rear-end other cars when driving my car. Apparently, it pertains to the regenerative braking system being turned off when the abs engages, leaving only friction brakes. This happens several times a week on the wet roads where i live (near seattle, washington). This has happened since i bought the car new in 2011 but i'm complaining now because my friend borrowed it and almost rear-ended someone and pushed me to report it. *tr

I received a safety recall notice (interim notice) regarding defective air bags involving defective welds on air bag infiltrators. I telephoned the dealer to schedule a repair. The dealer said it could be many months before toyota comes up with a fix for this defect. They refused to replace the airbag or give me a rental vehicle. I do not think my family and i should have to drive a vehicle with a known defect that could serious injury or death for many months until toyota comes up with a "fix". There is a "fix". Toyota could simply replace the defective air bag with an air bag that is not defective. The csa recall was issued over a month ago and nothing has happening. I feel like this is not done in a timely manner. I haven't experienced an problem with the curtain shield air bag in my prius, but that's not the point. I could have and there's no indication of when the remedy will be available. I'm an attorney and i think they're asking for a class-action lawsuit. I didn't enter my phone number because that's private. I contacted toyoya 7/26 but haven't received a response. Driver side door lock failed and shortly thereafter the front passenger door lock also failed. We have owned a total of five prius vehicles since 2007 and have never experienced this problem before this dual failure. Judging from the number of complaints on this site and info gathered during internet research it appears this is a widespread problem, most likely due to poor quality or defective door lock actuators. A google search (toyota prius "door lock" failure) resulted in a quarter million results.

Prius started consuming oil around the 105,000 mile mark. Two months ago, i took it to the dealer and they had me come back after 1100 miles after my oil change. They said it was consuming oil because the piston rings were leaking. The lady tried to sell me a used engine for 3,000 or 5,000 dollars. I told her that is why i bought toyota because i didn't want to spend money after 100,000 miles. I have looked online and this practically happening to all the 2010-2011 prii. My buddy owns and camry and just had his block/piston rings changed for the same problem. This morning, i am a 100 miles from the need of an oil change, and when apply the breaks i get a yellow light coming on saying "not enough oil pressure". I google this and people are saying it is because my oil is low again. I think toyota is trying to avoid having to recall this.

Takata recall 6/28/2016. This can potentially kill vehicle passengers if not addressed

My headlight on the passenger side keeps dying out of nowhere after about three or four months of use (about 6,000 miles of driving). It has been doing this for the past year now and occurs about three of four times a year. It would happen out of nowhere. Today it occurred while driving in the rain during work (i deliver food, needing my car to drive).

The prius has a problem when braking over broken pavement or potholes. This happens when the brakes are applied to slow the vehicle and the car enters an area of the road where there is uneven ground. The brakes seem to not work for a second even if there is steady pressure applied to the brake pedal. This problem causes quite a startle to the car's driver. This is especially a concern to us when this happens at a crosswalk. This is an ongoing problem. Toyota of america has been contacted twice, i have taken the vehicle in to my local dealership but no fix is available.

The car was traveling at about 40mph when we t boned another car that entered our lane illegally. My wife applied the brakes and we skidded for about 10 yards before hitting the other car. Neither the seat belt restraining system nor the air bag system operated.

I was driving on a highway in the country, go about the speed limit of 55 when i heard a very loud sound like an explosion or gunshot. I had the cover to the sunroof open and when i looked up i could see that the sunroof was shattered, crackled everywhere, but intact. When i pulled over to look at it from the outside, i could not see any debris from anything that would have hit it.. Instead it appears to bow from underneath and the sides have linear cracks all around. I was not close to another vehicle when it happened either, so i do not see that it could have been caused from anything externally. This could have caused me to be distracted to cause an accident or injury if the glass had entirely fallen through to the inside.

2011 toyota prius 3. ( most models 2010-2014) engineering design flaw allows mice to easily access inside of the vehicle through air system. When mice are present while driving this creates a driving distraction that can lead to an accident or death. Toyota corp refuses to acknowledge the problem, but the dealership does field complaints but will not act because toyota refuses to acknowledge the problem an order a bulletin . I have photos and solution to issue, however several others may be unaware of the issue a simple google search will result in additional findings. I myself am a victim of the design flaw and nearly resulted in a car accident. Without being dramatic- this is truly a issue that needs to be reviewed seriously. I cant provide more details if needed. I'm not looking to gain money, media attention or anything else other than there is truly an issue and i want others to be safe. Its heartbreaking to look in the rear view mirror to see a 15 month old baby screaming because a mouse is running across her body and another mouse is running across the back seat and then the floor board under your feet while trying to pull over with no road shoulder.

The cd player burns the cd image label. When entering 4 cds into the changer the cd in the 4th position burns almost the entire image label. The other cds had the image paper burned on the outer 1/4 in of the label. I reported this to the toyota dealer on may 1, 2016. On may 16,2016 i dove from wilmington ohio to lorain ohio, 3 hours playing 4 cds continuously. This caused the heat in ghe cd player to increase and burn the cds. The cd player feels very hot to the touch after use.

Mice invaded my car. Trapped 6. Found nests in engine area, under trunk, inside hood felt in glove compartment in a water bottle. The smell does not leave after having car detailed and steam cleaned. Toyota should take care of this. Not the consumer problem. My car was driven every day and inside a garage.

Brakes disengage momentarily when braking on a bumpy roadway. I have had this happen multiple times. It feels like the abs system releases the brakes and then reapplies braking. Luckily, i have not had vehicles in front of me.

Headlamp, 2011 prius 5 door hatchback, i have replaced the right headlamp 5 times since purchasing the vehicle in 2012. Recently the lamp above the the headlamp has also gone out. If you move the wiring i noticed the lights will work for a while then go out. The headlamps will work for a while when replace but with the last replacement the right new headlamp will not work.

Every once in a while - it can be months between events - our prius momentarily slams on the brakes when driving at highway speeds while nothing else is going on. We know it's not operator error. It's happened to my wife several times and me once. When it happened to me i was driving straight ahead on a dry, lightly traveled divided highway during the day. Everything on the dashboard lights up, alarms go off, the car decelerates like i suddenly stomped on the brake pedal though my foot never moved off of the gas, it lasts for maybe a second and then the car is back to normal. It's the same each time it's happened. Luckily each time this has happened we haven't had anyone tailgating us. We've taken it to the dealer multiple times. The first couple of times they looked at us like we were loony. They checked it out and we got it back with a message that said the technician checked the computer and test drove it for 20 miles and the car was operating as designed. Except it happened again. We finally convinced them that this was maybe a legitimate issue and they said they brought in a toyota field specialist who checked the car out and they said that the issue was the pcs wave radar sensor that was slightly out of alignment due to body damage (my wife had hit a small deer about a year prior to that - damage was minor and repaired at a local body shop). After they realigned the sensor, the car behaved itself for about five months. Until yesterday when it happened again.

When i brought it to my mechanic, i was told that it's a defect with the 2010 and 2011 prius and that the only way to repair the issue is to install an enhancement kit, which cost me over $500. When i called toyota about this problem, i was told that my extended warranty does not cover burned out headlights. I keep trying to tell them that i don't expect them to cover burned out headlights, but that they are burning out because of a defect with the car. They keep brushing me off. I am very upset by the fact that it's a known problem with the car and toyota is not standing by it.

"takata recall" this is our first toyota purchase and we are extremely let down with the fact that it is losing an excessive amount of oil. This is a safety issue. In the event that the engine may cease if it runs out of oil. We previously have only had american vehicles, and were told that toyota is a much better product.. Well as of this past april, we had this brief light go on. It doesn't stay on very long and only appears when you turn a curve. Then the "oil maintenance due" light appeared. That's odd, because i just had my oil change done 2 months ago! I went to a local oil service station immediately and found out i was down to only one quart of oil in my engine. I've never had this happen before! They looked for a leak and didn't find one. They topped off the oil and i was free to go. Well, the same scenario happened again in july, only 3 months after the last top off. I made an appointment with the dealer to have him look it over. They said it needed a system engine cleaning, there were no leaks, they gave it an oil change, and the spark plugs looked fine.. $300 for this to be done. Then they told me to bring it back in 1900 miles... Well this seemed to work... Until... Now.. In october/november (2-3 mos later) the same issue happened, and now they are telling me i need a new engine that will cost anywhere from $3000 to $5800. I have only had this car going on 5 years. I have never had to replace an engine on any car before.. Where is the toyota quality we were told toyota stands behind???

On start up in cold weather, <40*, after several days of not being used, the engine rattles like there's a loose engine mount. It lasts several seconds, then stops. After the engine warms up it's fine. This happened several years ago and i had tsb-0204-11 installed at 38,000 miles (12/18/13) and had no problem the problem reoccurred yesterday, 1/3/16, 76,000 mi, and i'll check with my mechanic for codes.

While driving and braking on a bumpy road surface, the brakes will initially work, quit working momentarily, then reengage. This happens regularly. The spiral cable is defective, horn stopped working two weeks ago, cruise control stopped working last week. There has been alot of complaints about this cable. Toyota has had recalls for the tacoma and yaris that use the same part number. The air bag uses the same cable. This is a big safety issue. The cost to replace this cable is $890.00. I am 5'4" tall and like the seat in an upright position. There is no way i can adjust the headrest so that it allows me to sit upright and not have my head forced forward and down by the headrest. I understand this is a new "safety" regulation. This regulation needs to be changed so people of my height can drive the car without their heads being forced down. I use a foam cushion between my back and the seat to compensate for this terrible design flaw. I would like to be able to buy a car that is both safe and fits me. I own a 2011 toyota prius which i purchased in november of that year from arlington toyota in arlington, va. Since that time i have had to replace the headlights three times. As of nov 2015, the car had 29,105 miles on it which indicates i do not put a lot of miles on the car. On all three occasions, both low beams were inoperable when i started the car. Fortunately, i was not on the road driving. On every occasion, the dealer told me the bulbs were burned out. The most recent occurrence was the night of sept 10, 2015. This time the dealer told me toyota has a wiring solution that would extend the life of the headlights, but that i would have to pay for it. The "solution" would be expensive. I told them that statement tells me there is a defect in the wiring or electrical system, and the fix should be paid for by toyota under a recall notice. I have noted that prius owners have been complaining of this same issue since 2007 and a recall had happened in 2011 for earlier year cars. The problem remains, and there is defect in the car's wiring or performance. Given the current vw diesel fiasco, i hope this issue can be addressed by the nhsta and force toyota to provide safe lighting to us prius owners.

I was moving forward in a turn lane on a city street preparing to make a left turn. A vehicle cut in front of my car and it was necessary to make a quick stop to avoid an accident. Immediately red warning lights lit up indicating a problem with the brakes. The repair statement from the dealer indicated that the brake booster with master cylinder assembly had failed and needed to be replaced. The repair required over two weeks to complete and i was informed that the procedure in the service manual for repairing the problem was incorrect.

There are 3 issues i am having with this prius. The brakes are the first problem. As others have stated, i too have the same lurching forward when braking over bumby or rough roads. This has been ongoing over the last few years. Second, the suspension is creaking and crunching when making turns at low speeds under 20mph. This happens when the wheels are turned all the way right and all the way left. This crunching noise happens when backing out of the driveway, making u-turns, coming to a stop on an incline, and braking over speed bumps. I've had the dealer look at this for the last year when i come in for service and one tech says they can't figure it out, another tech says he hears it but can't find the root of the problem, the service mgr. Also went on a drive with me and reproduces the noise concern but the techs couldn't find it. Most were suggesting new front suspension components-struts, towers, links, etc. I replaced the two front struts and all of the extra components-the noise concern is still there. I am very upset about this. Third issue is the ice-motor. When stopped at a red light and the engine shuts off, the car lurches forward and makes a creaking sound. It's appears that something is not right. The engine seems like it is loose. The engine also makes rattling sound when cruising lightly at 15-25 mph with the accelerator pressed slightly. The sound is coming from the passenger side, under the dashboard-glove compartment area. This is a rattle sound coming from the engine. I've had this looked at as well and the dealer states they cannot duplicate it. I have recorded all sounds related to these concerns and am taking it back to the dealer this month.

Excessive oil consumption. Recently i notice oil pressure low light lights frequently. It used the oil was changed every time the maintenance light come up. About every 5000 miles. Now the low oil pressure comes almost every 1000 miles. The car only has 89k miles.

I noticed around 90,000 miles that my car began consuming oil at any accelerated rate, so i didn't think too much about it. Then i noticed that i my oil gauge was turning on every 1,000-1,200 miles, my car was completely out of oil. I went online to toyota prius forums and started doing more research and this is a common problem for 2010-2011 prius's. Bob smith toyota, in la crescenta, who sold me the car, ran an oil consumption study and concluded that there is a major issue and they contacted toyota did not want to acknowledge there is an problem for the sake that this could result in a class action lawsuit based on negligence.

Request help with 2011 toyota prius oil consumption, quality, safety, & air pollution issues: i bought the car new. Just after 100,000 miles i noticed it was using oil between oil changes. It has gotten way worse to now at 145,000 miles it used 3 qts in 2000 miles. It does not warn you that the oil level is low until you are 3.5 qts low & a messages says you have low oil pressure. This is unsafe in that the car could go dry on oil and the engine sieze up. There is a tsb on this for other toyota vehicles, but not yet prius. I believe prius needs to be added to the list & i want toyota to replace my engine or at least the piston rings. So far toyota is not admitting to oil consumption problems with the prius. This is also a possible emissions issue. I contacted toyota's customer experience center in feb 2016 and they set-up case no. 1602170764 to track my complaint. They referred me to alamo toyota in san antonio. I do not believe that toyota is being proactive in addressing this problem. After researching this issue on line, i have found many other toyota prius owners with the same problem. The problem does not show up until you are close to the 80,000-100,000 miles point and so for those folks that drive less, the problem may not show up for another couple of years. I thank you in advance for any help that you can provide to me. I spent over $23,000 for this car and hoped it would give me trouble-free transportation for more than 4 years and 100,000 miles.

Headlights burn out frequently or stop working intermittently; headlight assembly on passenger side appears to have leakage and low beam appears at a lesser brightness than driver side beam. Had at dealer 4 times in same day for issue with driver headlight in summer 2015 and now at dealer for passenger side issues. This happens in unpredictable circumstances including after long operation or after having just started the vehicle - inconsistent.

My wife was driving our 2011 prius during stop and go traffic. She said the car just took off on her on it's own she tried to brake but it wouldn't stop. It crashed into the motorhome that i was driving. The air bags never deployed. The car was totaled due to the extensive damage.

On at least six occasions, i have lost control for a second or two while braking. While applying the brakes, and simultaneously crossing any sort of uneven terrain, the vehicle suddenly darted forward as i slowed. We have been experiencing braking abnormalities for 1-2 months, and when our brake malfunction light came on we had it checked out. Initially, about 1 month ago, the toyota dealer's service dept. Could not detect an issue, so simply reset the computer. But, again, the malfunction light returned and again, we returned the car to the service dept. On this occasion, they told us that nitrogen gas has leaked from the accumulator into the braking system. Research indicates that this is a similar problem experienced by 2010 prius owners. We would love for toyota to fix this issue rather than us cover the $5000 for brake system replacement.
