  • Recall 2021723 [Canada]: Accessories
Issue: this recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at toyota or lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: this recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 pk5a408j09 pU14000904 C014003151 pk5a408j13 pU14000905 C014000885 pk5a489j11 pU14000907 C014000888 pk5a489j22 pU14000909 C014000907 pk5a410h00 pU14000911 C014100904 pU14000900 pU14000913 C014100907 pU14000901 pU14003571 C014100911 pU14000902 pk5a408j05 pU14000903 safety risk: engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

  • Recall 2021718 [Canada]: Steering
Issue: on certain vehicles, a defect in the steering gear assembly could cause it to leak power steering fluid. If this happens, there could be a loss of power steering assist. Note: for 2007-2020 models, this recall only affects 41 vehicles that had a replacement steering gear installed in 2021. Safety risk: a loss of power steering assist may result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect, and if necessary, replace power steering gear assembly.

  • Recall 2013353 [Canada]: Accessories
On certain vehicles equipped with an optional tonneau cover where the front-most panel can be opened with the vehicle ignition key, the lock cylinder could bind. If the lock cylinder were to bind in the open position, the panel may not remain closed and the tonneau cover assembly could separate from the vehicle while it is being driven. This could potentially result in property damage and pose a hazard to other road users. Correction: dealers will affect repairs when service parts become available. In the interim, the panel release mechanism will be disabled or the tonneau cover removed, at the owner's choice.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation as of 20190419

The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit. The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems. The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low. While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events. Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring. The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations. In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.Additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.

My tundra with 75,000 miles has a camshaft tower leak and this oil is falling into the exhaust manifold without being noticed because it doesn't make it to the floor, but it gets to the sensors and starts ruining them. Toyota motor co knows about this issue in all their 5.7l engines and that its a factory robot error by not applying enough sealant in the gasket. And this is just being fixed if you are either under factory warranty or extended warranty. The vehicles loose power and if driving on a highway can cause a major accident. The least this company can do is offer a voluntary recall but they are refusing to do so because the fix will cost them $3500-$4000 from all their 5.7l engines assembled in the u.S. So for my safety and the safety of many toyota drivers and general highway drivers safety, i hope this would be taken into consideration. Thank you

I was merging into traffic on to mass 93 highway when my check engine light, trac off light and blinking 4 loe came on. The engine went into limp mode greatly reducing my power and i lost control and. I had to pull off the lane. I was able to make it to the next exit and get to a mechanics shop. They hooked up a analysis computer and came back with maintenance code P2432, secondary air pumps and secondary air pump valves. I found out that this has been an ongoing issue with toyota tundras going back to 2007 models. The warranty has been extended on 2007 - 2010 models but not newer models which are still experiencing the same problem.I feel this problem constitutes a potentially dangerous safety hazard due to the drastic reduction in power which could cause an accident depending on when the parts in question fail.

The steering wheel did not stay centered and the position would change. I noticed that when i was stopped and the steering wheel was locked that the steering wheel had some movement from side to side. I checked the steering wheel lock down nut and it was tight. The steering wheel has a spline bushing that matches up with a matching spline on the shaft so i could not see how this could move. I removed the locking nut so i could see the where the steering wheel and shaft connect together. With the nut off i noticed that the spline bushing did not move but the steering wheel did move on the bushing. There was a potential danger of the steering wheel coming loose so that i would lose control or worse yet the steering wheel could come completely off the column. This problem can easily be checked as i did with the steering wheel in the locked position. If you have any movement of the steering wheel in the locked position get it checked immediately.

I was driving and all the sudden my power steering went out. I was in traffic and almost was in an accident because of no power steering. I immediately pulled over and looked on the passenger side and power steering fluid was leaking out of my tie rod boot. I immediately got to my toyota dealer and they automatically knew what it was, the rack and pinion blew out. So clearly it's a toyota thing i figured. I was able to get it fixed by my insurance company but i started doing research on forums and many facebook groups devoted to toyota tundras and daily i see more and more people are having issues with their rack and pinion going out and days after my friend also had his go out on his tundra. This seems to be a major problem toyota has and it either needs to be recalled or fixed somehow so people can be safe and not almost get in an accident like i did. When toyota even acknowledges it and refuses to not fix it, that throws the red flag right there and they clearly understand it's a problem. The fix amounted to $1937 dollars also.

After filling up with gas and pulling onto highway there was no power like truck was in limp mode and tractor trailor had to swerve off of road to prevent severe accident. The secondary air injection has a severe mal function which toyota only recognized in earlier models and they extended warranty to 10 year and 150,000 miles. This is a severe problem i wish someone would investigate before it's too late and lives are lost. There is not much response time to make a quick decision during this moment. Thank you

Very serious malfunction with air injection pump. This happened to occur after filling up the gas tank. Multiple dashboard lights came on and the truck went into limp mode. This could have caused a serious accident while on the highway. $2000 plus in repairs for a very dangerous and apparently well known problem with recalls issued in previous model years of tundra and other models of toyota trucks.

The trac off light and check engine light cans on at the same time. I took it to toyota and they said there was an extended warranty of 10 years of 150,000 miles. If it was the secondary valves and air pumps. I got a call back and they said it was, big my vin was not part of the extended warranty. This is an issues with 100s of tundras. This is a safety issue. Because you can't go over 60 or get to 60 safely. The toyota blogs are full of tundra owners complaining. This needs to be fixed.

My 2012 tundra had a trac off and engine light come on. This is the same problem for numerous toyota tundra in regards to failure of the secondary air valves and pumps. I was told my vin number was not on the 10 year , 150,000 mile warranty for this same problem. I urge you to force toyota to add my vin number to the extended warranty. My vehicle cannot go over 60 and be safe. It was raining and rain got into the pump system. Toyota has replaced thousands of these badly designed system and more needs to be done. It cost over $2,000 to replace badly designed system.

When in motion the vehicle enters limp mode and loses power. Acceleration by pedal does not function, the engine only revs and does not speed up. The vehicle slows down to anywhere from 25 to 5 miles per hour on its own without stepping on the brake and the transmission doesn't shift. This happens anywhere, highway, street, driving straight, turning, etc. No warning. I almost got rear ended because this problem equates to someone driving on the highway and slamming on their brakes with no brake lights!! I could have lost my life today! Toyota is aware and has been aware since 2007 of the problem and is playing with peoples lives!! *tr

'12 toyota tundra appears to go into limp mode, brought it to the dealer ship, a recall was listed for something, didn't fix the issue. Had to have about $1,500of work done. Fixed the issue....For 1.5 months. Back at the dealership again, throwing all the same codes for all the same parts. Clearly the parts being used aren't a fix to the problem, and seems like more than just is are having the same issue. At this point it's playing with peoples lives. Toyota dealt with this with earlier models but anything 2012 and up , nothing is being done. Someone is going to get killed if these trucks go into limp mode on a highway and they get hit at 70-80 miles an hour from something out of the drivers control, that toyota knows about. When will a recall condo this, something needs to be done.

My 2012 tundra with 107k displayed the check engine, 4lo, and traction control warning lights and would only drive in 'limp mode'. Luckily this happened at startup when i was leaving work one afternoon, and not as i was driving at highway speed. I 'limped' to the local dealer using back roads and left the truck for diagnosis. I was notified that the truck was exhibiting code 'P2440' for a faulty secondary air injection system valve, and that both secondary air pumps and valves would need to be replaced to correct the issue. The repair would cost $2500, but "luckily" the dealer had the parts in stock because this was a common problem. Since i needed the truck to get back and forth to work each day, and i am not ready to replace it, i authorized the repair and picked it up the next day. Subsequent research on-line showed that this has been a known issue for years. Toyota extended the warranty on these parts for my 2007-2011, and later for certain 2012 vehicles as well. Unfortunately, it appears that only the 2012s with the 5.7l engine are covered (mine is a 4.6l). From my research, it seems that the pumps/valves in my truck are the exact same parts that are known to fail (and are covered) in other model years. I called toyota customer service, and of course they advised that they would 'log' the issue and contact me should the warranty be extended to cover my truck. Judging by the number of complaints here, i feel that it warrants an investigation and perhaps applying some 'external' pressure to persuade toyota to do the right thing and cover all of the affected vehicles. Not only is this an emissions issue, but could be a serious safety issue if the truck were to go into limp mode while driving. *tr

Check engine and traction light came on. 4lo sign flashed. Vehicle goes into limp mode, slowing down, and at times creeping along while the vehicle was in motion on the highway. There is a large decrease in performance especially going up any sort of incline. Took it to the toyota dealership for evaluation. They recommended replacement of the fuel pump and was told toyota is aware of this problem and this make/model is not part of the recall at this time. I called the toyota hotline, and the worker verified she could see info on the recall talking about warning signs -but they were not specific. She forwarded on my information to another individual. That individual called today, and she advised my warranty was over and my vehicle was not included in the recall.

A light came on and it started losing power. Took it to the shop and was told it was bad gas. I put the cleaner in it and it didn't fix it. I had some buddies tell me to unplug my battery because it sounded like a safety feature. So i did. The light went off and the truck acted right for a few miles then started doing the same thing. Vehicle was in motion on the highway. My buddies referred to it as a "limp mode" or something like that. I was afraid to have it worked on because i was told if there was a recall the manufacturer wouldn't be liable.

When driving my check engine and "trac off" light comes on and the engineer will not accelerate above thirty miles an hours. If you disconnect the battery and reset the computer it will work for about three mile then the check engine and "trac off" light comes on. This is the same indication earlier tundra models have with secondary air injectors recall. An it is widely documented online as a problem for 2012 tundra's. Yet toyota continues to denies it's a problem and is not covered under the recall.

2012 toyota tundra 4.6 l at 101,000 miles went into limp mode causing a lack of power and acceleration during city driving which could have resulted in a rear end collision. Was able to limp vehicle to nearby toyota dealer who diagnosed that the secondary air injection system was faulty. Cost to repair was more than i wanted to pay beingthat i had just purchased the truck within the past month or so. Toyota did not cover the repair so a bypass kit was installed at my expense to get the truck back under power. Contacted toyota and they advised that the system was not covered however it should be noted that on 2010 models and others the warranty on the system was extended to 150,000 but not on the 2012 4.6l engines that have the same problems as the others.

On numerous occasions while driving, my 2012 toyota tundra suddenly lost acceleration power and experienced the engine failure known as "fail-safe" or "limp-home" mode. As evidenced by toyota t-sb-0160-11, warranty policy bulletins, and warranty enhancement programs, toyota is well aware of this serious design flaw and safety issue, yet has chosen to repair or compensate only a select few. The parts that had to be replaced after my vehicle repeatedly went into 'fail-safe / limp-home' mode correspond directly with the part numbers referenced in toyota warranty policy bulletin pol17-02 which covers this defect in other models, but not in my 2012 model. My out-of-pocket cost to repair this manufacturer's defect was $3034.87. This a known air injection system water intrusion defect and common safety complaint at the nhtsa and on multiple toyota forums, affecting numerous 2012 tundra's which toyota is refusing to acknowledge and compensate for. I have written several letters to both the ceo of toyota and the toyota customer experience center requesting reimbursement of my repair costs and have been denied twice; the first denial in writing, the second denial via telephone. I request the nhtsa investigate this serious safety issue to protect the lives of others driving these dangerous vehicles. Toyota has an ethical and safety obligation to the consumer to remedy this defect and to compensate those of us who have had to bear the financial burden of their failure to correct this well-known issue. *bf

* ongoing manufacture defect / safety concern with 2012 toyota tundra 4.6. Code P2440, secondary air injection. Bank one open.---check engine / trac off lights / engine in "limp mode" * documented recurring incidents on 4-2-19 and again on 10-12-19 after costly out of pocket repair. * my 2012 toyota tundra 4.6 motor double cab has experienced the air injection pump failure twice in a six month period. This failure is a safety hazard leading to loss of power and vehicle control. The first occurrence was after a 2,000 mile trip. Driving downhill the dash lights (check engine / trac off) came at highway speed and immediately vehicle power reduced as we tried to power up the next hill. We were able to avoid being run over by following vehicles by pulling off the road, and limped to the nearest mechanic shop. Contacted 3 dealers and toyota corporate with no positive outcome. All parties acknowledge the ongoing defect but will not pay or offer a solution to end the problem. Paid out of pocket for expensive repair. The 2nd occurrence six months later found us again unable to reach or maintain safe highway speeds. Avoid dangerous highway situations, or ability to climb hills. Both instances occurred without warning. * this emission control defect that toyota has known about since the 2007 models. They even extended the warranty through the 2011 model year. Toyota also claims the problem is neither drive-train nor emissions related. After many attempts at the dealer and corporate level, toyota refuses to extend repairs for this well documented defect beyond the 2011 model. Toyota suggests that when enough complaints are recorded, they will extend the warranty on newer models. The lack of support from dealers and corporate toyota is alarming. The repair out of pocket is expensive (from $500 for a temporary repair to $4000 for a replacement from the dealer.)

My truck has been having hard start issues since winter 2017. I figured it was my battery so i replaced it, but it didnt help. The hard start wasn't consistent so i chose take some time to see if any other problems surfaced. Got through winter 2018 and spring/summer 2019 with it still starting rough on occasion. By october 2019 my truck reached approx 78k miles, and one day it didn't start at all. Took three tries to get it going. I had the battery checked once again. It tested bad but it was under warranty so i had i lt swapped out. The problem persisted. This time it gave me an engine light. Mechanic said it was an 'evap code' and recommended i replace the gas cap to start. Code didnt return but still hard starting. Took almost two months and engine light came back on. This time P1604 startability malfunction. Was told i had to take it to toyota to get a reflash. I decided to do some research and came across the problems tundra owners were having with this ffv density sensor malfunction. Printed the old service bulletins and went to toyota to talk to service dept about it. They said toyota just put out a new service bulletin in december 2019 for the reflash but now also replacing the fuel pump (toyota told me density sensor attached to the pump). Unfortunately toyota also told me they won't cover the cost since my truck had just gone over 80k miles, and they are not flexible with that at all, even though i told them it started before 80k. T-sb-0166-19. So i got prices. The reflash is about $140 and just the cost of the pump itself is $600, not including labor. I have spoken to the toyota usa customer care team and they said they cant help me since i didnt take it to the dealer to diagnose it. Apparently it doesnt matter if you have service records from another shop. This is my 3rd toyota, and i love my truck so this breaks my heart.

When cranking the vehicle all of a sudden as of 5 days ago the check engine light appears along with 'track off' indicator. This throws the truck in 'limp' mode decreasing the power of the vehicle by 50%. This happened the first morning and i was entering a on ramp to get on the high from my neighbor and almost got plowed over due to not being able to properly accelerate to highway speeds while entering the ramp. I had a technician check the issue and was told it has to due with the 'secondary air injection valve' failing. After about four days of research i found this is a common problem it not just my vehicle but multiple years and motor sizes. Toyota apparently covered certain year models/vine but when calling regarding mine they said my vehicle wasn't covered evening though there are thousand of consumers having the exact same issue. This issue is also an expensive repairs cost upwards to $3,500-$400 to fix. Toyota is aware of the problem and apparently doesn't care that it also cause safety issues with the vehicle not having proper power to operate. This is a manufacturing defect plan and simple.

I was coming off an entrance ramp merging into traffic on to a 4 lane highway when my check engine light, trac off light and blinking 4 loe came on. The engine went into limp mode greatly reducing my power and it felt like my steering control got loose. I had to pull off the road to keep from being run over by faster traffic. I was able to make it to the next off ramp and get to a mechanics shop. They hooked up a analysis computer and came back with maintenance code P2432, secondary air pumps and secondary air pump valves. Upon further research of this issue i have found out that this has been an ongoing issue with toyota tundras going back to 2007 models. The warranty has been extended on 2007 - 2010 models but not newer models which are still experiencing the same problem. My vehicle is considered low mileage for a 2012 with only 79,786 miles. I feel this problem constitutes a potentially dangerous safety hazard due to the drastic reduction in power which could cause an accident depending on when the parts in question fail.

2012 tundra 4.6 v8 my truck will go into limp mode and the 4lo light flashes, check engine, and trac off lights were all on. Almost complete lose of power will happen. In traffic i end up blocking ever vehicle behind me, because the truck will not reach the speed limit. If there is a hill then the truck barely moves going up the hill. After looking online i saw it's a pretty common problem on toyota with the secondary air injection pump seizing. I checked it with the code reader at a local shop and the guy confirmed it, code P2240 "air injection switching valve stuck open bank 1." he told me he used to work for toyota and knew there was the extended repair on this issue but couldn't recall the specifics. I went into toyota and unfortunately they will not cover it for my truck after they ran my vin number. It seems like a lot of tundras with the 5.7l motor are covered but the 4.6l motors are not. I was informed by toyota that in the future it might be covered.

Toyota tundra power steering rack and pinion failure. While driving my truck the power steering rack and pinion failed. I heard a pop sound and pulled off the city road to inspect my vehicle. My vehicle had approximately 47,000 miles at this time.

My 2012 tundra has just under 70,000 miles on it and the trac light and engine light came on yesterday. Had it looked at and the mechanic says the problem is with the secondary air pump and it is a known problem. Called the dealer and they knew of the problem and told me there is a csp that covers certain 2012 tundra's. Unfortunately the csp only covers the 5.7 l. Engines and not my 4.6l model. My mechanic says that everything is the exact same set up as far as the secondary air pump, it's just a different size engine. Not sure why one is covered but the other isn't but i'll have to suck it up and pay the price. Maybe if more people make toyota aware of this they will eventually cover it. I'm a toyota fan and have been driving them for 40 years and this won't push me away but it is disappointing.

I was pulling out of work. You must cross 3 lanes of traffic plus the center median to turn left. This is a city street. Speed limit is 45 i believe with many vehicles going faster. Vehicle had the smog air injection pumps and valves fail. This cuts power drastically to the engine and puts it into limp mode. I was forced to swerve back into and stay in the center median instead of merge into traffic as the vehicle had little power. I was able to wait for a bigger gap in traffic and limp the vehicle to the repair shop. I believe this could be deadly should it occur if trying to get on the freeway or pulling a trailer and the engine cuts power drastically. Toyota has a long history of issues with these parts failing going back to 2007 and possibly earlier. There is no need for a smog pump failure that only runs for 2 minutes on cold start to drasically cut engine power and endanger the driver and other motorists.

I own a 2012 tundra with the 4.6 liter v8 engine. Very very similar or exact to other complaints on this board. Truck went into limp mode while on the highway. Took the vehicle to the dealership and had to pay to have them replace the secondary air injection pumps and valves. I agree the fix needs to be extended to all year models and engine size tundras, not just up to 2011. Also agree that these defects could result in a fatal situation if not corrected across the board. Toyota should also reimburse those that have had to pay for the repair.

With only 81,719 miles on my truck i had to have the air injection pump & valves replaced on 3/29/2019. I was informed that this was a common problem which had been recalled in the 2011 & 2010 models. If a recall is made within a year of the part being replaced i will be reimbursed. I work from home and the truck has only been driven for leisure or chores for the past 3 years. It was driven daily in las vegas from 2015-2017 and in orlando from 2012-2015. There have been no other engine problems. In january of 2019 the check engine light came on and the car was performing with less power but everything worked okay. Instead of driving an 8 cylinder truck it felt like driving a full size truck with only 4 cylinders. The issue happened overnight. Everything was fine and then the performance just went south. I waited 2 months to have it looked at because i rarely drive and because it still ran but with less power. I was told by toyota that if another mechanic fixed the problem and a recall came later then i would not be reimbursed. After i was informed that this would more than likely become a recall i moved forward with using toyota's service department. My goal is to find out if there is a recall pending for the 2012 tundra air injection system or at least find out if the problem is widespread. If i was taken advantage of by a dealership using the recall as a tactic to get my business i want to make sure to let others know so i hope someone from the nhtsa will follow up. The bottom corners of both doors come to a very sharp point. Both of us have sustained nasty cuts on our shins when getting in and out of the truck several times. There should be a different design to remove the sharp points you can't avoid it at least put durable protection over the sharp edge.

A grinding noise began to develop in the rear end of the truck. The noise was most noticeable between 30 and 60 mph. I took the truck to a toyota dealership for diagnosis and they determined the rear wheel bearings had failed. These bearings are sealed, require no maintenance, and should be designed to last the lifetime of the truck. This is a safety concern because a bearing failure could lead to loss of vehicle control and an accident. I have found a number of similar incidents reported on internet tundra forums, which indicates this is not an isolated problem.

Code P2442 which stated that the air injector pumps and valves were failing. We brought the truck to toyota and they had told us that it would cost us 4000.00 to get it fixed, after charging us 144.72 to hook a code reader to it which would of cost us nothing to take it to auto zone. I needed to accelerate to avoid a vehicle coming up on my left, but there was no power due to being in "limp mode." the vehicle coming up behind me had to slam on his brakes and i swerved off the shoulder. This could have been a very bad accident if there was a concrete barrier in front of me. This is a known malfunction and should be a recall item. Toyota has publically said this is a warrantable repair up to 150,000 miles on 2011 model year tundras. Please refer to tsb 0160-11. Toyota recognized that inferior quality parts were used as part of their emissions system and wrote this tsb as a remedy. The problem i have is that they continued to use the faulty parts beyond the 2011 model year cut-off in this tsb. My truck is throwing the same engine and emissions codes associated with this tsb. It also forces the engine into a "low power mode" greatly reducing the ability to accelerate. Lastly, it turns off traction control which affects the stability of the truck. I have filed a ticket with toyota and from what i have read on the internet, i don't expect much help. The parts to repair this run over $1,000 alone. There are many owners having the same issue with the tundra, sequoia and some other models (on the 4.6l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines). The engine codes usually appear on startup (when the emissions device are supposed to kick in), but the low power mode kicks in while moving.

This complaint is the same as many i see here and across the internet. Driving on the washington dc beltway and my 2012 tundra goes into limp mode which reduced my power significantly causing a unsafe situation to say the least.. Dealer said problem was with secondary air injection system and the repair was very expensive. Now 12 months later the truck is having the same problems. This is an inferior system that toyota should stand behind and cover all the costs associated with fixing instead of charging tundra owners after they've already spent hard earned money on the vehicle purchase. This is a wide spread problem that toyota is not owning up to.

Check engine light and trac control lights came on around 72,000 miles. Truck started to be sluggish and lose power. The truck is in a constant 'limp' mode and fails to properly accelerate. It is definitely a safety issue as it causes unsafe conditions when trying to accelerate into a traffic lane. Took it to dealer and it is an issue with the secondary air injection valves and pumps. Dealer quoted me $2184.25 to fix. Not currently covered under warranty. Toyota has addressed this issue with other years and models but for some reason has excluded the 2012 tundra. I have contacted toyota on multiple occasions and they refer me to nhtsa to file a complaint. I see several other complaints here with my exact problem. The secondary air injection system relay and secondary air injection system switching valve. Obd ii codes P0418 and P2442. My experience is the same as other complaints in that my truck is now permanently in limp mode and cannot be driven due to these known defective parts. On pre-2012 model tundras toyota has extended the repair warranty to 10 years/150,000 miles as this is a widespread problem. For some reason they will not include later year model trucks like my 2012 4.6 liter. This is a safety issue as the truck slowed severely in traffic and will not accelerate or go up any hill. Cars behind me in traffic had to swerve around me. I was stuck dead at the bottom of a hill as these chronically failing parts shut down the vehicle's power. Toyota customer care has denied my attempt to seek compensation or repair of these parts that they know are defective. The fix needs to be extended to all year model and engine size tundras as these defective parts exist on models past 2011. A side note, somehow these defects are reported to be affecting the vehicle skid control as that warning light comes on when these parts fail on most of the affected tundras.

Thursday morning the 18th, i drove at 65 mph to work via freeway with no problems. After doing so, the results were the lights in the dash were now off and the truck drove proper with no hindrance. This would last until wednesday 24th. Both lights came back on and the truck started again driving sluggishly. Its seem that when the light is off the truck drives fine, but when it is triggered the truck is drives extremely sluggish. I took my truck back to the dealership to have the oil and filter changed with 114.8k miles on it at this time and was told i will need to replace the engine. I believe something isn't smelling right. Does anyone know any issues with the connection of the cam seal leak and the rod ready to blow. The dealership said it would be approx. $14k to replace the engine with 40k miles on it.. Really ? Again, i'm smelling "not my problem" from the people involved. Who can i reach out to assist me in researching the cause of possible mis repair maintenance ? I appreciate anyone's help. Best regards,

Air injection relay and pump failure. This has been an extended warranty item on all trucks except the model i have with the same parts as the larger engine truck. This is a corporate game of not enough complaints on a less popular model engine even though the parts are the same as what is being replaced on same year models with the larger engine. Repair is estimated at $2600

Truck in limp mode. Would not exceed 40mph. Vehicle limped home and towed to dealer. Rodents had chewed electrical wires per toyota dealer. Upon investigation toyota began using soy-based wiring in their vehicles instead of petroleum-based and didn't notify their customers. Soy-based products in vehicles have been known to "attract" rodents versus petroleum based products. My 2012 tundra was still under warranty and toyota denied said warranty because it wasn't a "failure" of their parts. The vehicle would not accelerate properly or steer properly because the traction control and ecm had failed. This could cause serious injury or harm due to an unsuspecting interruption in speed and traffic flow, as a result of wiring separation occurring while operating the vehicle.

Air injection relay and pump failure. This condition eventually leads to "limp" mode causing traffic safety issues. This has been a manufacturer recall/extended warranty item on all tundra trucks, up to and including some 2012 models but not all of the 2012's. By the numbers of failures present, it's obvious that what ever design changes toyota did to say they fixed the issue and exclude some of the 2012's were insufficient. This recall/extended warranty should include all 2012 models. Toyota/dealers claim the pumps are part of emissions so they are not covered under the manufacturers warranties. Repair cost was quoted at $3800. Other filed complaints: nhtsa id number: 11075528 nhtsa id number: 11002406 nhtsa id number: 10994136

My 2012 toyota tundra is equipped with toyota's vehicle stability control (vsc). One of the features of the vsc is when the computer perceives a loss of traction, the computer (without the driver's consent) attempts to correct the loss of traction by braking and/or engaging one or both of the front tires. In november of 2016, the vsc on my tundra (with only 43k miles) began to fail and instead of becoming inoperable and doing nothing, the vsc attempts to engage the front tire(s) during routine turning movements. This causes a jerking sensation in the steering wheel and the vehicle pulls sharply to one-side. This could cause a loss of control. The vehicle has been to the dealer three times and i have spent nearly $2,800 trying to correct the problem. To date, toyota has been unable to correct the problem or disable the feature. It is my opinion the vsc system in the 2012 tundra is unsafe. This is not only based on the fact i am the owner of a defective tundra, prior to retiring in november 2015; i worked for the california highway patrol for more than 27 years as an officer and sergeant. I investigated numerous traffic collisions, worked in specialized investigation units and received advanced training in traffic accident reconstruction. I know firsthand that a sudden and unexpected pull on a steering wheel, such as i am experiencing in my tundra, could cause a driver to lose control. Therefore, it is my opinion based on the aforementioned that the vsc system on the 2012 toyota tundra is defective and potentially dangerous.

My 4x4 toyota tundra crewmax with the 5.7l engine was diagnosed with a cam tower leak with only 15,000 miles on it. Fortunately the vehicle was still under the factory power train warranty. Toyota made the repair and provided a rental car for me. I have heard this is a common problem with the 2012-2013 5.7l engine and i want this issue to be more public. I worry owners of this vehicle will be stuck with the $2,300-$3,000 bill to fix their own vehicle if their vehicle's power train warranty has expired. I also worry the engines could leak oil onto the exhaust manifold and catch fire.

On 4/5/16, i started my 2012 tundra to go to work. Engine light comes and stays on. Called local dealer and took the truck in. 5 hours of diagnostic testing reveals code P0418 (secondary air intake system) issue on my 2012 tundra. Cost of repairs, $2048.00. After some research into this code P0418, i find that it is a reoccurring problem for tundras, tacomas and sequoias dating back to 2000 - 2010. Repair costs of up to $4,000. Supposed to be resolved in 2011 + models. Not so. If this is not corrected, the truck could go into limp mode, restricting power and depending on where this occurs, could lead to a dangerous situation. No way preventative maintenance will help identify this issue. I called toyota customer service and they (toyota) were willing to pay for half of my repairs, which i appreciate. However, they knew this was a problem dating back to 2000, made attempt to correct and still an issue. Seems like this should be investigated further based on the fact that this continues to plague owners.

The passenger side airbag came on when my son and i went on a trip to our cabin. We stopped to get gas, my son got out of the truck and the light came on. I turned the ignition off got gas, and when i started the truck again the airbag light remained on. I again turned the truck off and started it again. My son got out and then got back into the truck. I took the concern to the dealer and they reset the airbag light. After the airbag turned off on us at almost the exact same place on our trips to the cabin 5 more times over a year with no fix to the problem i asked the dealer to come up with a plan to address the ongoing safety problem. My rep. At the dealership said the toyota corporate rep. Will stop in to the dealership in a month or so and they will call me to meet with him. After three months with no contact i called the dealership, when no one called me back i went to the dealership. My rep. Was out for the summer and another rep. Told me the toyota corporate rep quit and they don't know when they will have another rep assigned to them. I then called toyota complaint line worked with a rep. Who looked into the on going problem. After two weeks of trying to get a plan from her she told me that they were not responsible because the passenger was too heavy for the airbag and the airbag sensor. She said the federal government sets the standards and there is noting they can do to adjust them. I asked if she could send me the airbag sensor weight sinsitivity settings she did not respond to the request. I then asked her to put toyota's position in writing, and the rep. Told me that "your maintenance receipt is your communication". That is the only thing they will give me. I have a dangerous situation with this airbag, and toyota will not take responsibility for the defect. I need help before someone gets killed here.

I took my wife and daughter on a couple of runs threw the mud in our 2012 toyota tundra crewmax 4x4 trd. The runs were no longer than 2-3 minutes of fun with zero problems. I did not have time to run our truck threw a car wash. I planned on getting it washed the next day after work. On my to work the following day our truck showed no signs of problems until i entered the freeway and continued to accelerate. At that point of time i could "feel" the transmission was not shifting correctly . I called avondale toyota immediately informing them there was something wrong with my transmission. They set an appointment up for friday the 7th of march. I informed toyota that i would prefer to drop the vehicle off when i finished work because i felt like driving it would only cause more issues if any. Today i received a phone call from avondale toyota informing the transmission "burned up" and is not under warranty even though our vehicle is under warranty. Their warranty rep based his opinion on pictures, still dirty from going threw mud, and concluded the transmission was "abused" and toyota is not responsible for "abuse." i immediately went to avondale toyota and spke with[xxx] and the mechanic who looked at the transmission. The mechanic informed me that all fluid levels were normal, temperature levels are normal and no transmission codes were tripped. Zero!!! A gear broke in the transmission and telling customers the transmission "burned" up is an easier way to inform customers. It is their assumption that i got stuck in mud and "attempted to rock the vehicle by moving the shifter back and forth from drive and reverse while i was on the accelerator." i informed the avondale that was not the case. I could of simply took our vehicle to the car wash, had it cleaned and contacted toyota and told them my transmission is acting up. Lying seems the way to go these days. Flex fuel models sold by gulf states toyota have an issue where the engine's computer thinks there is e85 fuel (or an alcohol concentration that is much higher than actual) in the system when there is normal 10% or less gasoline actually present. This can cause rough cold starts/idle, power loss, sudden rpm/power dropout, missing, and lessened fuel economy, etc. (different symptoms for different trucks). At this time there is no final fix and no available service bulletin. The only guidance at this time is to have your dealer see what alcohol concentration your truck is running and re-flash the computer if the readout is incorrect. I try reaching out to toyota and see if they could help me resolve the issue, but toyota don't care. See below email i sent to toyota on 12-13. I was assign "case manager" was no help at all. On 12/24/2012 around 04:00hrs i struck an adult moose in bear lake, canada with the front end of my wife's 2012 toyota tundra crewmax on the british columbia highway. The condition of the road was snow and ice but we had recently purchased aftermarket rims and tires on 12/18/2012 in california; 18in mb votex rims with bfg all terrain tires. The traction of these tires boosted my confidence in traveling at speeds of 30-40mph at night. We had traveled all the way from georgia without seeing any animals at night. The hid head lamps gave me a false sense of security navigating through the night in order to make the final leg to anchorage, ak for christmas day. To my surprise, a moose tiptoed from the woods on my right about 20 feet ahead of me as i intended to press on pass it. But all of a sudden it got spooked and darted into my path. I struck the animal broad side with the front end of the truck knocking it into the engine bay. Initially i thought the contact was not severe but inspection proved otherwise. The hood was crumpled up unto the windshield, and the radiator and motor was pushed so far back that it was no longer drivable. I believe my speed was around 30mph upon impact which surprised me that the animal was dead. The truck was towed to a local body shop for an insurance estimate as a total loss. I was concerned as to why the airbags did not deploy since the damages was so great. The tech explained that the sensors for the airbags are located behind the bumper of the truck where impact was minimal. Because the contact to the moose knocked him off his legs the large body fell into the engine compartment and could have been fatal had it a full rack of antlers. Thank god he did not! Though we have purchased a 2013 replacement of the same truck, the airbags not deploying is still a concern as a design flaw and need to be addressed. *tr

I purchased my flex fuel tundra 5.7 in november of 2011. I started to experience issues with cold starts in december of 2012. I had an extended crank time, and it would take multiple attempts to start the truck. I took it to the dealership for the first time in january of 2013. The dealership reset my computer. The issue seems to be resolved. The following winter, in december of 2013, i started to experience the same issue with cold starts. The dealer apparently reset my computer again. Just a month later, january 2014, the extended crank on cold starts began again. This time, they told me my alcohol density was reading 49%. They said it should be at 85%, however, i am not using straight ethanol gas, which i told them numerous times, so my reading should not be 85%. I was told the computer should reset to 0 when i fill up, but my truck is not. It's just building up, which results in an inaccurate alcohol density reading. The dealership told me that the only current solution is if my tank drops below 1/4 tank, i should only fill it half way, drive it gently, and then go back to fill it the rest of the way. After filling it, i was told to let it idle, and drive it gently when i pull out of the gas station. This is unacceptable. Following my last visit to the dealership, when i refilled my truck for the first time after the last reset, the 'miles to empty' was reading 425! My truck usually ranges between 300 and 320. The 426 miles to empty reading only happened once, but again, the inconsistency and inaccurate readings are nonsense, especially on a $35k+ vehicle. Since then, i have researched the issue, and i'm not the only tundra owner with this issue. Other flex fuel tundra owners are having the same issue. *tr

Driver's seat frame (base) began intermittently popping which progressed to a consistent popping felt every time the vehicle cornered at speed or weight shifted in the driver's seat. The problem was confirmed by dealership and an adjustment made to the seat rail alignment pin. For several months, the problem appeared to be fixed. However, the problem ultimately returned with a similar popping noise. I allowed it to progress until the dealership could reproduce the popping noise in the driver's seat frame (base). The problem was identified the second time as a cracked weld in the frame near the point where the seat back and base are connected. The dealership ordered and replaced the entire seat frame with a new one. The mileage at the time of repair was 23500 miles. I am documenting the issue because i have noticed several others complaining on truck forums of popping in the seat frame. Also, i noticed the recent toyota recall for a similar issue in other model cars. *js

Scared and very careful i drove it home, didn't do it anymore but i contacted my dealer's customers relations manager and he got tow it away from my home for its checkup. They said that they've hooked up a computer to it and the truck's computer did not register anything wrong or malfunction whatsoever. But it did happened.
