Known Recall Investigations
  • Engine compartment fire investigation as of 20110126

In july 2010, the agency opened pe10-027 to investigate allegations of coil on plug (cop) ignition coil fires in my2002-2003 vw passat vehicles. The investigation was upgraded in january 2011 to include all my2001-2007 4-cylinder vw passat, gasoline, turbo-charged vehicles.Based on the analysis of vws response, and including odis consumer complaints, odi has since identified 135 unique engine fire reports attributable to the cop coils. After further review of the details as contained in each report, odi determined that 43 of the 135 fire reports were actual fire/flame incidents, 83 fire reports were thermal events (smoke, spark, heat or wire melt), and another 9 fire reports were undetermined in severity due to the lack of information. These cop coil fires were characterized as initiated from within the cop coil circuit located at the top of the engine block and below the plastic engine cover. The fires observed were contained in the engine compartment and did not reach into the passenger compartment in contrast to those caused by an overheated catalytic converter examined in odi?S investigation in 2007 and 2008.There were no reports of crashes or personal injury in this examination.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstancessee the closing report for additional details.

  • Fuel tank leak investigation as of 20080131

Volkswagen (vw) is recalling certain vw passat 4motion and audi a6 quattro and allroad quattro all-wheel drive passenger cars.Vw vehicles subject to recall were manufactured from november 22, 2000 through may 31, 2005 and audi vehicles subject to recall were manufactured from june 2, 2001 to june 1, 2005.The nhtsa recall number for the vw vehicles is 08v-156 (vw also is correcting defects related to heat shield and fuel line hazards for these vehicles and for 1999-2000 passats in this recall action.)the nhtsa recall number for the audi vehicles is 08v-157.Since 2006, odi has received 17 complaints of fuel leaking from the subject vehicles fuel tanks. The 400 complaints shown above may include duplicate reports to odi and the manufacturer. While the consequence (fuel leaks from the top of the tank) is similar for both the passat and audi subject vehicles, differences in design and construction require a different remedy for each vehicle. On the passats, the ventilation line could have been installed improperly with tension and with an incorrectly positioned cable tie.The tension could cause cracked or broken nipples on the fuel tank rollover valve. On the audi vehicles, a material change (effective june 2, 2001) with different aging characteristics used for the rollover valve and the use of an inflexible aluminum ventilation line could cause cracking of the nipple on the rollover valve.Vw is recalling all vehicles subject to these defects. It will inspect passats to ensure that the vent line is tension free and correct the installation if tension is found. If a crack or fuel leak is found, vw will replace the fuel tank.Audi will repair all subject vehicles by reinforcing the fuel tank rollover valve with an epoxy adhesive. This investigation is closed.

  • Passenger engine compartment fires investigation as of 20070928

The manufacturer notified nhtsa on 04-apr-08 that a safety recall action would be initiated to remedy the issue. In june 2008, the manufacturer issued a technical service bulletin (code 26e5/r5) regarding the specific procedures to be employed in this campaign.Vehicle owner notification letters were sent beginning approximately june 13, 2008.The campaign was assigned nhtsa no. 08v-156.This recall affects all my 1999-2005, 5th generation gasoline-powered passat sedans and station wagons.Approximately 412,000 vehicles are affected.Corrective action will consist of installing additional exhaust system heat shielding to mitigate the potential thermal effects of engine ignition problems.Based on this action, the subject ea has been closed.

2005 vw passat wagon, 4 motion, 128,000 miles, w/ intense odor of gas in the cabin of the car; after driving 15 miles to work, i developed a headache and illness symptoms which lasted for 2 -3 days. Car was towed to local vw dealer. I contacted vw of america, who agreed to diagnostics. Large fuel tank fracture confirmed. After many discussions with customer service at vw of america, they refused to cover repairs, though they did confirm that this failure was the same failure which had led to a previous recall campaign of the fuel tank/system, but since my car had already been repaired (2015) w/ a superseded part and it was past the 12 month warranty period, i did not qualify, nor would they offer goodwill service. They did acknowledge, however, that it was a serious safety issue and the car should not be driven. I verbalized in many conversations the safety concern this posed not only for myself and my family but for others who had the potential to face the same situation. I asked what process vw had for documenting and reporting these consumer safety concerns of such a serious nature and was told that it is reported internally but there was no one i could speak with to discuss further any aspect of the case, nor would vw report this to nhtsa, as it had been reported under the previous campaign. I feel very strongly that this repeated failure should be reported and therefore am documenting here. The car has now been towed to my home where it sits in my driveway d/t the fumes being at a toxic level when the car is in the closed garage. The cabin of the car also remains with a high level of gas fumes. I have asked for written documentation from vw of america related to my case, but as of yet have not been provided with such.

My 2005 passat has developed a fuel leak under the tank. My vehicle looks like new and only has 72000 miles on it. This leak/smell occurs after when the car is moving as well as when the car is sitting in the driveway. Seems very dangerous to me and i've read many complaints describing this exact scenario. Why is vw not forced to recall and inspect for this situation.

I completely filled the fuel tank of my car in the morning on 4/22/2019. I then drove home and parked the car in my driveway (so it was stationary at this time). That afternoon i smelled a strong odor of gasoline and saw a puddle on the ground underneath the car by the driver's side rear wheel. I thought that maybe i overfilled the fuel tank so i waited to see if the issue would go away after i drove a bit. On 4/23/2019 i still smelled gasoline and saw a puddle under the car after parking. I determined the fuel was only leaking while the car was in motion and it became apparent there was a larger issue. On 4/24/2019 i took the car to a mechanic to diagnosis where the leak was coming from. The mechanic could smell gas and found fuel residue, but nothing fresh. It was recommended that i fill the fuel tank and return to see if a leak could be found. So on 4/26/2019 i completely filled the fuel tank and returned to the mechanic. And they found that fuel is leaking from the seam of the fuel tank.

I decided to change the oil myself in my car, since i wanted to save money and i knew what i was doing. Instead of draining the oil, i accidentally drained the transmission fluid. I didn't figure out that it was transmission fluid because it looked like oil! So, this is what happened after; i drove home (not knowing there was no tranny fluid in it) and i noticed that the car wanted to take off by itself. It kept doing tis two or three more times when it became stuck in 4th gear. I managed to safely get home, and figured out what happened. I am reporting this because this is a design flaw!!! The transmission fluid drain hole is where the engine oil drain hole should be! Luckily, after i put fresh tranny fluid in it, the car was fine. I wonder how many other people this happened to.

Car had intermittent starting issues for about 6 months. Engine cranks but does not turn over. Will eventually restart anywhere from 15min - 5 hrs later. Cannot get it fixed because can't recreate problem at mechanics. Car does not die when driving. There does seem to be fluctuations in speed while driving. And does seem to be worse in rainy weather. I was traveling on i-70 east 25 miles east of denver at mile marker 133, with three of my granddaughters in the car with me. I heard a noise and immediately started to pull to the right shoulder and brake when the car went out of control, spinning me out to the left across both traffic lanes, took me in a 360 degree circle and then into the ditch on the right side of the road. It was only an instant from first noise to being spun out of control - no warning. Because i was spun out to the left, i was not hit by the semi directly behind me. The right rear tire ran ahead of my car from the point where i first attempted to stop. There was an incident report: colorado state patrol #[xxx]. Officer on scene examined tire and said it was an "instantaneous separation" of tread from sidewall and possibly faulty tire manufacture. He also said we should have rolled but my car's low center of gravity saved us. We were unhurt but traumatized. The tire was purchased 1-30-14, 3-1/2 months prior to incident and was in like-new condition. Purchased from discount tires on lake mead in las vegas, manufactured by gt radial, giti tire (usa) ltd., 10404 sixth street, rancho cucamonga, ca 91730-5831, phone (909) 980-0968. Car had been completely gone over two days before when i departed on trip, tire pressure was checked the day before, and a visual check was done before i got on the road that day. There was no indication that the tire was damaged or underinflated in any way. I believe utterly that the tire was defective and am considering a lawsuit despite fact that we were uninjured. This was a terrifying event and one which could have taken the lives of my granddaughters through no fault of my own. This is happening more and more and mfgrs are using old "dry" rubber and/or ineffective adhesive. I trust you will pursue this very serious issue. I was driving across connecticut on friday june 27 2014 on i-84 (danbury to mass pike), traveling from philadelphia to boston. After passing through hartford the road expands from 2 -3 lanes to 8, i was in lane 4. The road was going to split going 84 east and 383 se. 84 was still 8 lanes when my car completely died - no gas was getting to the engine. I had semi tractor trailer very close behind me, the time was 5:30 - rush hour, everyone was speeding, and i was shut down in lane 4. At this point, thankfully and miraculously, the 2 highways split and it was all i could do but fall into the newly created breakdown lane; otherwise i don't see how i could have walked away from the road. There was no, none, no warning that the car was going to die, no lights, no shaking, no alarm. I called the state police to get me off the highway. As it was friday evening, aaa could only tow me to a pep boys and as it was 7 pm by this time, i had to spend the night in a residence 6 in manchester cn. Pep boys looked at the car the next day and determined that no fuel was getting to the engine; i would need a new fuel pump. Also, for no other reason that it was interesting, apparently a 2004 all-wheel drive pump had been put on my (new) 2005 front-wheel drive car. I am told this is not unusual. They eventually found a pump and installed it, i left for maine around 1 pm that day. I had my car in my local shop before leaving on this trip, as is always done, and was deemed safe to drive. I have since call vw and they say that they have no real explanation for the pump dying other than this happens. I appreciate that equipment needs to be replaced and car parts maintained. It is outrageous that not to have provision to give warning to your car about to go into complete failure is acceptable by anyone. How many people have to be put in danger before this changes? *tr

Our passat is the tdi (diesel) model. We purchased it used and at around 185,000-190,000 (low miles by diesel engine standards), the vehicle completely shut down while being driven. I lost power steering and brakes. Diagnostics revealed that the chain driven oil pump assembly had malfunctioned. The chain broke and got all up in the engine and oil was no longer being pumped into the engine so the engine was destroyed requiring a complete engine repair. About 16,000 miles later, i was driving and the same exact thing happened. Did some research and found out that this is a very common problem with this model vehicle. Volkswagen has issued an internal technical bulletin telling the service departments how to fix the problem. The fix is changing out the chain driven assembly with a gear driven one. They also never made another model with a chain driven assembly after that model year. So they basically admitted that this is a faulty system yet won't issue a recall. Changing out the assembly is $1500 for the part alone and if you're changing out that part, the chances are good it's because it failed and you now have a destroyed engine as well which is a several thousand dollar job even for a used engine. There is no way to tell when it's going to fail and it's not part of any maintenance schedule. Volkswagen has told me that it's not a common enough problem to issue a recall and yet it's a common enough problem to have to issue a technical bulletin about it. I find it abominable that they know this has and is happening with this vehicle and they are not letting people know about it. Even if they refuse to pay for it to be fixed, the public should be aware that they are driving a ticking time bomb. Someone could get killed if the engine shut down on them while traveling at high speeds on a highway. No power steering. No brakes. It's completely unethical. *tr

On 3/23/13, when turning left in traffic, the "sealed for life" 5-spd auto transmission made an incredibly hard shift, began slipping badly, and quickly lost 3 fwd speeds, "limping" in for service. Normally, a trans failure at 143k would not prompt an nhtsa complaint. It is not the car, but rather vwoa and its dealer network, that are the problem. My local dealer refused to check auto trans fluid level, and would only grudgingly do a fluid change if i wanted, for an extortionate $700, steadfastly maintaining that neither was necessary. Vwoa today 4/5/13, ironically, criticized me for not following the owner's manual recommendation of checking fluid every 40k miles. Local dealer wanted over $4400 + misc fees & tax to replace the trans. At the same time, they indicated my new tires with 500 miles on them were in a marginal tread wear condition. Ditto the recently renewed (at the same dealer!) rear brakes. Btw, the transmission manufacturer, zf, recommends communicating to customers the benefits of fluid changes at 50k mile intervals. Vw won't listen to either customer or trans mfr. Trans was rebuilt at qualified independent shop. There was also an earlier recall (thanks, nhtsa!) of ceramic glow plugs that would fall into cylinders and cause catastrophic damage. Fortunately, i had the repair done independently, as this condition was known for at least 2 yrs before vw's official response. Vw did compensate me for this, but i wonder how many $9k engines were destroyed while vw contemplated its collective navel. Btw, after the official vw fix (done at dealer), the car starts in winter like a 1980 rabbit diesel. I fitted a zerostart as corrective measure. Vw also refuses to discuss the balance shaft chain drive issue with me. A ticking time bomb at 143k. They know it. I know it. Nhtsa, please take vwoa to task! As for me, i'm now shopping competitors. *tr

Was driving home and the check engine light, stop driving light, low oil pressure light and a buzzer went off. Had the vehicle towed to a mechanic and have found that there is no oil pressure. The vehicle with this many miles should never have a problem with no oil pressure. The mechanic tells us that it might be "sludge" or the oil pump is shot. Either of which should never happen on any vehicle especially since it has only 89000 miles. This problem is typical with this motor and was recalled up to the model years 2004. The 1.8 l turbo motor is and always has been a terrible motor for this and just because they have not received a lot of complaints on this particular year does not mean that there is no problem. One only has to search on line to see that their is and has been an ongoing problem. Vw of america has acknowledged the recall and their culpability up to 2004, in an email to me, but because of our newer vin has denied coverage. *tr

My 2005 passat is leaking gas, location is close to the rear passenger side. I called local vw dealer (where i purchased car from ) along with vw 800 number- both told me there was no recall. I took the vehicle to my local repair place woodys in ankeny, iowa. The mechanic called me back to tell me that he did believe there was a recall 26e5-r5. I called back vw and he told me that indeed there was a prior recall however the mechanics fixed the car prior and would not fix it again. He told me that i need to have the car towed to the local vw mechanic, pay for the tow, pay for the diagnostic screening to determine if there is a true gas leak similar to the one that was recalled/fixed, then vw would possibly consider covering the charges. I'm left paying for 2 tows now (one to the place its at since they told me in the first place it wasn't covered) and then a tow to vw, plus the diagnostic appointment, and possibly the entire cost to fix it, if vw decides they don't want to cover the cost again. There was a recall, the recall obviously was supposed to be fixed and they did a poor job, my car is leaking fuel out of it (raw fuel) and smells horrible, and they want me to 'check' to see if there is an issue and possibly pay to fix it. This doesn't seem right. *tr

When i'd press the brakes, the car would slow down but still be going. When i let off the brake pedal, it quickly shot back up to 50mph. I was lucky to be able to turn onto a side street maybe 1 minute later and avoided hitting anyone else. I am beyond surprised that i was able to avoid hitting anyone with the amount of traffic. 2.0l vw passat tdi had a rattling, vibrating chain noise from the oil pump balance shaft module in the oil pan. The oil pump chains/sprockets/tensioners were worn and caused noticeable vibration and rattling noise for thousands of miles; however, it was difficult to diagnose. We had the entire oil pump assembly replaced by a vw dealership at approximately 120,000 miles with oem gear driven pump which includes the balance shafts and oil pump. It was a $3700 repair to exchange the original oil pump with the gear driven pump. Not a cheap service. The sound before and after the module change was much improved because the gears are quieter. The replacement gear driven oil pump/balance shaft assembly uses a similar balance shaft but with a different oil pump and gear drive. The gear drive smoothes out stress on the oil pump hex shaft so runs much better. In summary, i am not happy with having to do such an expensive repair due to a poor design at the low mileage of 120,000 for a diesel that should last to at least 400,000 miles. This is a recurring expensive problem that should be reimbursed by vw. *tr

The tdi (diesel) engine in the '04 & '05 north american volkswagen passats was equipped with a chain driven oil pump/balance shaft module. The chain tensioner fails causing the chain to separate which stops the oil pump and destroys the engine. If a person is lucky, like i was, and hears the chain noise before it fails, the engine can be saved. The fix involves installing a new gear driven balance shaft module which contains a new oil pump. The repairs costs ~ $2,500 parts and labor. Volkswagen has ignored this fault in the us (and canada), denying the problem exists, even though hundreds of cases of failure have been documented. In fact, the new design modules are currently on back order at the vw parts factory. The oil pump chain drive problem is without a doubt a defect. The fact that vw re-engineered and replaced the original oil pump drive assembly is an admission that the design was defective. Reference vw's technical product information no. 2016429/2 dated 29-jan-2008. I see this as a huge safety concern. I can only imagine what would happen if one of these chains failed, on the highway during freeway rush hour traffic, causing the engine to destroy itself and spill oil and other fluids onto the road surface. In addition to losing power, the check engine light starting flashing and i needed to exit the roadway. I disposed of that vehicle and purchased a certified pre-owned 2005 vw passat 4 motion. I have now had to have one of the ignition coils replaced. Again i was driving along and the vehicle suddenly lost power and started running very rough. This time i was in an area with very little population and a severe snow storm without cell service. *tr

Volkswagen passat passenger vehicle model year 2004 and 2005 with 2.0l diesel tdi engine. Balance shaft and oil pump are driven with a chain mechanism which has a history of failure with less than 100,000 miles usage. This prompted a design change and a recall of affected vehicles in europe. No recall in north america. Recalled vehicles in other areas of the world were retrofit with a gear drive mechanism that is reliable. Failure occurs without warning and will result in immediate loss of oil pressure and rapid engine damage including possibly engine seizure. If this were to occur at highway speeds it would be a clear safety hazard. *tr

The car (vw passat tdi 2005) began accelerating on its own. The gas pedal would depress beneath my foot (without my pushing it) and the car would accelerate without stopping. When i hit the brake, sometimes it would jerk out of the "accelerating mode" (as if i had pushed the brake in cruise control), but then it would resume its acceleration within 30-60 seconds. Sometimes when i pressed the brake it would rev against the brake and i would have to shift it into neutral and then brake to get it to slow down and keep it from revving. This happened 3-4 times in the past 1-2 weeks. I made sure the cruise control was off during each of these episodes (since the car seemed like it was trying to go into cruise control when this problem occurred, but with no maximum speed set -- i.E., accelerating indefinitely). Some things that may or may not be related: the air conditioning was on full blast. Each time it happened, i had been on the freeway going above 60 mph for at least 5-10 miles. At the end of the last episode, the car was producing smoke from the front wheel wells (likely because of braking against the acceleration). The dealership is examining the car right now, so i can't report what repair was done yet. (right after the last incident i had the car towed to a local vw shop, but they couldn't figure out the problem, so i'm having the car brought to the dealership tomorrow - 6/28/2010). *tr

I own a 2005 volkswagen passat gls. The factory installed seat heater malfunctioned the other day producing smoke, burning my buttock (and finger when i reached down) and burning two pea sized holes on the driver's seat. The local vw dealer was aware of the issue. I also called the district vw office at 1-800-822-8987 and notified them of the problem. Apparently vw is covering the cost of repair on some but not all vws. I was told the 2005 passat is not covered under any kind of extended warranty. However, the district office is investigating the issue and promised to get back to me by day's end tomorrow. To me this is a safety issue. Other then minor burns to my buttocks and fingers, i was able to safely pull over and turn off the seat heater. The heat and smoke went right away. When i asked about the safety, the vw dealer's service department suggested i not use the heaters until they are repaired. I asked about disabling them via a fuse of something but they said unfortunate the fuse controlled other functions in the car. However, i believe this is a safety issue with the 2005 passat gls. I'm okay but others may not be so lucky. Also, i'm concerned how the vw dealer's service department suggested i just not use it again. What if someone else uses the car and i forget to tell them? Oil sludge, oil pump failure, engine failure, now my 2005 vw passat needs a new engine , this is a vw manufacturing defect in the 4 cylinder 1.8 turbo engine because the turbocharger gets to hot and cause the expensive synthetic oil breakdown and it sits in the bottom of the oil pan until it gets sucked up by the oil pump and this causes your engine to fail. *tr

I have a 2005 vw passat gls with approx 135,000 miles. I took it in to get "winterized", oil change and clear the engine light (whatever the misfire was for), and a factory recall on the engine coils. Got all that done (plus serpentine belt replaced) and was told that the engine light should be ok, if it comes back on...To let them know asap. A day and 1/2 later, the light came back on, and this time, there was barely any heat on in the car. Took it back...They stated that the coils needed to be replaced (again) and that there was an oil leak going into the coils & the fuel injectors, and that the heater core needed to be replaced. I had the coils and the 2 "faulty" injectors replaced. I got frustrated with this dealer and went to another vw deal, for their evaluation. They said that they didn't know how i could've been told that the heater core was bad, when there was so many other things wrong before they even got to the heater core!! And they gave me 3 options: either pay for each service separately, get a new/used engine or see what i can get for this car and trade it in (not happy @ all). I called vw of a to see if there were any recalls or complaints about the heater core, since it was causing more damage that originally thought, but they nicely "documented" it and sent me a loyalty voucher if i were to get another vw. I own a 2005 passat tdi gls. My car had developed a very serious noise caused by the oil pump chain unit that was originally on this vehicle. I did talk to vw and my dealer service department about the thrashing chain noise. I got polite denials and blank stares when i told them of this issue. Members of the www.Tdiclub.Com discovered a vw engineered fix for the vehicles involved. Members who have driven their cars beyond the 80k or so seem more likely to have the chain snap during operation which renders the car inoperative and dangerous during the breakage. The fix is not exactly an inexpensive repair as the parts alone are around $1500 and the installation requires extensive disassembly of the vehicle. There is a problem with the bhw engine in my 2005 passat tdi the balance shafts in this engine are driven by a chain off the motor, which also drives the oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. On various tdi forums, especially tdiclub.Com, there are a significant number of chain failures being reported. Of course, when the chain driving the oil pump fails, the engine is starved of essential lubrication. If the failure of the chain causes engine to stop running in the middle of traffic, merging onto a highway, or passing on the highway, this condition could easily cause danger to all citizens nearby, possibly leading to death. Recently, volkswagen in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair, which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump. This appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect. The repair is quite expensive. When the chain fails, the parts to repair cost approximately $1800 plus approximately another $1500 in labor bills to have the parts installed. If the engine is destroyed, it will cost the owner approximately $8000 to replace the engine. This is unacceptable. I believe it is now obvious that all the bhw engines will fail unless the gear driven oil pump modification is undertaken. It is unfair to expect owners of these vehicles to pay for the repairs. The problem originated with a flawed design. This is not a small problem, as this design flaw will lead to total engine failure. My vehicle is currently experiencing severe noise oscillations that is attributed to imminent failure of the aforementioned chain assembly. Thus, i must pay to repair this design flaw before it can cause an accident. So far, volkswagen of america has not provided adequate support for resolving this design problem. *tr

The failure is with (1) the balance shaft oil pump chain drive system on the vw passat 2.0 tdi diesel automobile. The failure has occurred numerous time to other vw owners and present an imminent threat to vehicle safety should such failure occur in heavy traffic. (2) ceramic glow plugs for the tdi diesel engine have a tendency to break off and cause catastrophic damage to a running engine. Both defects have been recognized by vwoa as evidenced by upgrades made to their european customers. However vwoa is totally ignoring the american customers and resulting in exorbitant repair prices. Vw continues to violate epa rule by not releasing ecu reflash data to non vw service facilities, here again capitalizing on a known design flaw. Let it be know that only the symptoms of these impending failures have occurred at this point in time. Judging from reports of others who have suffered already this vehicle is in immanent danger. *tr

Excessive noise from oil pump, chain unit, and chain (and possibly balance shaft) due to original equipment design. I believe a failure is imminent and within 100 miles. Failure of the balance shaft assembly and the engine oil pump system drive can lead to catastrophic engine failure with loss of oil pressure, broken oil pan, broken front engine seal flange, and damaged crankshaft. This can result in damage to the extent that the engine must be replaced. If this occurs while the vehicle is in traffic, it can lead to a collision with injuries or deaths. I am an owner of a 2005 passat tdi gls wagon with 58,000 miles on it. I am writing to seek help in getting volkswagen of america to recognize there is an inherent problem with the engine's balance shaft assembly. I am a tdiclub.Com forum member, which has participants that are career mechanics who work on tdis specifically. Through their experience they noted this problem will sooner or later affect the some 20,000 2004-2005 passat tdi's with the bhw engine code. The balance shafts in this engine are driven by a hex shaft off the chain driven oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. On various volkswagen (vw) forums, especially tdiclub.Com, there are a significant number of chain failures being reported. Of course, when the chain driving the oil pump fails, the engine is starved of essential lubrication. Recently, volkswagen in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump. This appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect. Here in the states, you can no longer order the original chain pieces as a replacement. The repair is quite expensive. Parts will cost in excess of $1,400 and labor will be in excess of $1,500. I believe it is now obvious that all the bhw engines will fail unless the gear driven oil pump/balance shaft modification is undertaken. Our own passat has been getting a bit louder this past year which is the first sign of this imminent failure. It is unfair to expect owners of these vehicles to pay for the repairs. The problem originated with a flawed design which will lead to total engine failure. This could lead to a serious accident if the failure happens while the car is on the road. The nhtsa cannot let this happen to american owners. Volkswagen of america has to recognize and inform the passat tdi owners of this problem, and help to rectify the situation to the satisfaction of their loyal owners. *tr

Loud noise in the lower half of engine prompted evaluation by mechanic. Problem was from failure of chain driven balance module. This failure was due to faulty design that vw has admitted to by virtue of no longer manufacturing this unit and replacing it with a totally re-engineered balance shaft module that is gear driven. Complete failure of this unit while operating the vehicle could result in a collision that potentially could be fatal. Vw refuses to be responsible and admit their error in design to the public, hoping to avoid a costly recall campaign. In the meantime vw owners are having to pay $2500 to $3000 for this repair. At the same time this is a recognized problem with the same engines in europe and vw has re-engineered the parts for north america for replacement. Vw needs to be held responsible for this design failure and the affected engines in north america need to be repaired at vw's expense before someone gets killed. *tr

The balance shafts in this engine are driven by a hex shaft off the chain driven oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. My own passat had the oil pump and balance shaft replaced 2/16/09 with less than 65,000 miles. Thankfully, a good mechanic detected the problem before i had a catastrophic engine failure. A $3,500 repair is never welcome, but it was better than replacing the engine like the vw dealer recommended. I did a lot of research on this problem and inquired at several vw dealerships and chose the most experienced man to do the job. Recently, volkswagen in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump. This appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect. The repair is quite expensive. Parts will cost in excess of $1,400 and labor will be in excess of $1,200 at most shops. My wife normally drives the car and she should not be put through this. If the failure of the chain causes engine to stop running in the middle of traffic, merging onto a highway, or passing on the highway, this condition could easily cause danger to all citizens nearby, possibly leading to death. I would like to know what steps volkswagen of america is taking to inform 2004 and 2005 passat tdi owners of this problem. Good corporate citizenship would recognize a problem of this severity and should be communicated to the owners as soon as possible. These engine failures could leave motorists stranded under dire circumstances and their safety is at risk. *tr

Vehicle affected is a 2004-2005 volkswagen passat tdi equipped with a 2.0l diesel engine. Codedbhw. The oil pump balance shaft module and chain are week in design and are failing without any warning to the driver. When this failure occur the engine is starved of oil and internal failure is imminent. Safety of operation becomes compromised at this point since an engine failure at highway speeds removes all power steering and braking features and the driver is along for the ride until getting the vehicle to a stop by use of e-brake or other speed reducing maneuvers and hopefully avoiding a collision. This failure is being reported at a broad range of mileage starting with 45,000 and up. Its main sign is a loud chain rattle or abnormal vibration while at idle. 2005 vw passat tdi had a loud noise coming from the engine like marbles in a blender. The car also shook violently. It got progressively worse over time until it was unbearable. The noise and vibrations were constant - whenever the car was running. I finally took the car into the shop and it turns out the timing chain that drives the oil pump and balance module was bad. The shop had to replace the entire oil pump and balance module due to a redesign from vw. The new design is now gear driven. The old parts are available at the shop that did the replacement. It looks like vw did upgrade the parts back in the early part of 2008 but they have not notified their customer base nor have they issued any recall. If the chain were to break there would be oil starvation to the engine because the chain drives the oil pump. This could lead to catastrophic damage and also life threatening injuries if this were to happen while the vehicle was in motion. I'm very lucky that i repaired my car when i did. Total cost for the repair was around $2400.00. *tr

I have not had failure yet, but there are several individuals who own the same exact car i own, a 2005 vw passat tdi. There is an ongoing concern at several news groups including www.Tdiclub.Com and other diesel enthusiast newsgroups about the oil pump chain unit that is in the vw bhw 2.0 turbodiesel engine. Many of these cars when they get out of warranty at 60k will start to have engine noise which is indicative of the oil pump chain unit chain weakening. This condition leads to complete failure without general warning. This is a disaster awaiting to happen. Vw in europe has developed a fix for this engine that involves installing a gear system instead of the chain and tensioner system for the engine balancing system. There are several episodes of people having the engines fail while on the road. I am concerned as an owner of this particular engine vw passat. There were about 12 thousand of these imported into the usa. I know of at least four individuals who have had this situation happen to them and their passat. I have recently come to the need of having to replace a critical part of the engine oil system in my 2005 passat tdi. For various reasons, not the least of which is an inferior design, the balance shaft assembly on this particular engine (2004-2005 model years) will cause oil flow to the engine to cease, disrupting safe travel of the car immediately, regardless of the speed of travel. This failure is exceptionally dangerous at highway speeds of 70+ mph. If this failure were to occur at highway speed, the driver would notice a sudden deceleration and a need to move to the shoulder abruptly. Not only would this endanger the driver and occupants of said vehicle, but other drivers on the roadway as well. Volkswagen has yet to issue a statement, recall or warning to owners of this particular vehicle, nor is it mentioned anywhere in the owner's manual as part of a vehicle maintenance program.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. The repairs are not cheap in the neighborhood of $3000 at a bare minimum with up to 9 thousand for a new motor, even despite owners using the proper specified motor oil. *tr

I went to start my 05 passat and got several error warnings: airbag fault, esp, check engine, absorber intermittent warnings. This occurred because the transmission control module (tcm) got wet from a (known by vw) water leak problem from the sunroof and hvac system. Vw has a recall to try and seal the leaks, but will not fix results of the leaks. I am lucky i wasn't going down the road when the tcm malfunctioned. I've researched, and this problem is a recurring one with not only passats, but also golf and jetta models from the late 90s to 2005. A malfunctioning tcm isn't the only electrical component that can be affected by the water leak. The engine control module and climate control module can also get wet and malfunction, causing serious safety issues if this occurs while moving. *tr

My 2005 passat tdi was leaking a huge amount of oil so i topped off the oil and took it to the mechanic. He showed me a huge gash in the oil pan, resulting in the leak. When we took the pan off the oil pump chain tensioner and chain came out in pieces. The tensioner broke and slammed the chain into the oil pan, making the gouge. We replaced the oil pan, chain, tensioner, and completed an early timing belt change including a water pump. This was around $2000 total. After some research i found out this is likely due to a problem with the balance shaft module / chain driven oil pump setup on these cars. I found out that even though i spent $2000 fixing this i may need to complete the same repairs again or replace the balance shaft module which would be several thousand dollars. I also discovered that vw has upgraded the design of the balance shaft/oil pump drive so obviously they know this is a problem. I've read that i was rather lucky, it is entirely possible that i could have suffered a catastrophic loss of oil pressure and had the engine seize up, which could be deadly. I'm basically just afraid to drive my car now. *tr

I currently lease a 2005 vw passat. Warranty offered: 5 yr/ 50,000 mile. Approx. Nov 7, 2008 vehicle dashboard began to register "stop oil press low". Immediately pulled into closest gas station and purchased a synthetic oil for vw thinking this would solve the problem. On nov 17, 2008 dashboard lit up again with same message and immediately brought vehicle into vista vw, pompano bch, florida. Was instructed that issue was possibly due to faulty oil pressure dip stick cylinder and need of oil change. (cylinder replaced and oil change completed) prior oil change was completed at vista vw pompano beach. Vw mechanic placed a clear oil change maint. Sticker with incorrect mileage due at next oil change. Oil change should have occurred at 38,000 miles vs. 45,000. Vista vw stated i would need to pay for a diagnostic test to be completed (approx $166.00) as well as an hourly charge for labor (approx. $110 p/hr) not including any and all repair to be paid for upon completion. This due to warranty expired. Brought vehicle in at 792 miles over 50,000. Due to the expense that i would have incurred it was not feasible for me to go ahead and perform this diagnostic test hence causing me to leave no further choice but to decline service. I attempted to trade my passat in early and release a new vehicle and was unsuccessful in doing so. Approximately 1 month later i was at gunther vw coconut creek and informed finance mgr that i now have an engine light on. I was told to try and drive the vehicle back home and see if the light goes out. That maybe it's a faulty sensor. Upon arrival at my residence the vehicle completely shut down and engine failed. The following day i had the vehicle towed to a mechanic. My mechanic stated that the approx. Cost for repair would be anywhere between $8,000 - $10,000. I immediately began research and found there is a lawsuit from the consumers of vw passats in regard to this exact same mechanical issue & vw will not comply with this issue. *tr

In 2007 i heard a noise from under my vehicle. It felt like something was loose and at times dragging the ground. I was advised by a co-worker that it was probably the under cover and to get it taken care of as soon as possible. On october 27th 2007 i took my car to darcars volkswagen. I was advised the undershield was damaged and i authorized the dealer to replace it. I contacted volkwagen of america by phone in november 2008 for reimbursement of repair costs for a defective underbody heat shields that i paid in october 2007 prior to the safety recall #26e5/r5 issued in june 2008. I was told the same day that my repairs were not related to the recall campaign. Recently, after i obtained lost receipts from volkswagen and examined them against all recalls--in hindsight something didn't seem right to me. I just couldn't fathom that the repair and the recall were not the same issue. I called volkswagen again about this recall and was told 1) there had been an extensive investigation on my initial claim 2) they had spoken with the mechanic that serviced my vehicle 3) that because i requested the heat shield to be replaced that i was responsible for the cost. I dispute that there was any investigation on my claim; that anyone spoke with the mechanic who serviced my vehicle; and most importantly that since i authorized replacement that i am liable for the associated cost of the damaged heat shield. It is my position that volkswagen is avoiding responsibility for reimbursement through deception and that they attempted to take advantage of my lack of knowledge of automotive specifics. I bid your intervention in this matter. *tr

The balance shafts in this engine (2005 vw b5 passat tdi) are driven by a chain off the motor which also drives the oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. Ours let go at speed with my family of five on board. Fortunately no one was injured at the sudden deceleration in traffic. A fix has been mandated in the ecu but not in the us. There is no current official "fix" from vw america. The expectation is the engine will self destruct and the customer will be required to purchase an entire $5000-8000 motor with a replacement gear assembly. I own a 2005 vw passat gls tdi sedan diesel and the oil pump balance shaft assembly including oil pump drive chain, tensioner, and sprocket are bad and making a horrendous noise. The vehicle has just over 60,000 miles but, is out of factory warranty. The vw dealer the vehicle was taken to has no idea of such a problem. My research has proven otherwise. It is said that if such a failure occurred at highway speeds, disaster could result. Apparently, there is a fix for this issue which entails the removal of the whole oil pump chain drive assembly and replacing it with a gear driven assembly. I feel this should be considered a factory defect and safety issue to where vw issues an immediate service bulletin followed by a mandatory recall campaign. *tr

This reference a very specific vehicle, i.E. Namely the 2005-2005 vw passat tdi (diesel) car, both sedan and station wagon version, with the vw bhw engine. What started out as an occasional need to replace the chain that drive the oil pump, became a certainty that the chain would break. If the chain breaks, you loose oil pressure immediate, and the engine is going to seize (not to mention the chain itself flopping around in the crank area which could lodge in the drive system and do the same). In any situation where you are accelerating, that is going to be catastrophic , and certainly any higher speed on a freeway/highway being the same) vw has recognized the issue and has now issued a tsb on the problem, but has not instituted a recall. The change is to remove the chain drive system and convert the engine to a gear driven oil pump. This is extremely expensive. What this does to the counter balancer shaft is unknown (i.E. What caused what to fail has not had any indication from vw). Ww should immediately be mandated to recall all these vehicles with the tdi bhw engine and or issue a recall notice that the vehicle should be brought in before the 100k timing belt change interval listed in the manual and have that tsb changed to a recall and safety repair. Any owner hearing the signatory noise of the failure developing should have that repaired immediately, but it should be replaced not latter than the 100k point. This is based on a survey of a few at 40 to 60k, most have it developing by 100k (if not failed or close to failure at that point. All other vw diesel engine use a gear driven oil pump system. *tr

August 2007 i got an oil change from the 10 minute oil change place in north arlington, nj. The first week of october my engine seized due to sludge. I always get my oil changed on a regular basis (3,000 miles) not the suggest 5,000 in my car manual. The 10 minute oil change place does not have a computer system to produce records and unfortunately i have only one receipt from the august 2007 oil change. I continued on to my residence where again the engine failed to stop running with the key off and out of the ignition. I brought the vehicle to my local dealer the next day which was a saturday. There the engine would again not stop running, and i showed the technician how i had chocked it previously. Following several hours of troubleshooting, the dealer traced the problem back to the sun visor. The vehicle was in for repairs at 42k miles, while under the warranty in 2004. There was an oil leak and the car was running rough. They stated they replaced a flange that was cracked, the oil pump/balance shaft sprocket, chain tensioner. When i got the car back it wasn't running right, very, very rough and loud (it's a diesel but used to be quiet). It turns out they did not balance the balance shaft with the engine, they ordered the part/tool to do this. Nearly 1k miles later, after they told me it was safe to drive, they called me to come in and have it balanced, which i did. At 65k miles, roughly 9-10 months after this initial repair, the chain snapped for the oil pump. The sprocket on the oil pump that they replaced along with the chain tensioner were destroyed. The sprocket had old and new wear, the chain tensioner ended up in pieces, and the chain should have been replaced the initial time but was not. The chain snapped. The original flange that was leaking was also leaking again. This catastrophe led to the crankshaft needing to be replaced as well as the turbo which was immediately starved for oil and burned up too. The engine was rebuilt (bottom end), turbo replaced, new crank, and currently it still cannot be driven due to electrical or mechanical problems associated with the repair and failure. Vw of america stated the parts they replaced did not fail, and if they did they only have a 12mo/12k mile warranty on them. The warranty for the car was up at 50k miles. On november 4,2005, around 7:30 pm while a i was driving my car from new jersey to new york city, a new jersey transit authority bus dangerously cut in front of my car. My wife was accompanying me. As i stopped to avoid the bus, the bus made a sudden and full stop about 15 feet in front of me. Instinctively, i put the car gear in neutral. All of the sudden my car engine started accelerating at a very high speed without touching any pedal. I pushed the brake pedal to see if the acceleration would stop. When i released the brake pedal , the car started running toward the stationary bus, despite the fact that the car gear was in the neutral position. As a result, my car moved forward and hit the back of the bus. The bus driver got out and asked if we were ok. She said she was fine and were no passengers in the bus. We were all right too. There were no policemen to make a report. The bus get a minimal damage. My car was mostly damage on the front side of the driver's side, but was drivable. About two weeks prior to the accident, i was driving the same car on the new jersey turnpike and experience the same sudden acceleration of the car engine. After a few seconds, the car continued running normally. In view of the serious events with this 2005 passat which has only around 10,000 miles, i conclude that this vehicle is prone to faulty performance and is dangerous and unpredictable on the road.
